Think this might have been a thread back in November but i'm sure it can be done now. Just wondering who's using what effects and whether anyone can recomend any winners or warn against buying dudds. I'm a bit of an effects virgin but i've got a boss overdrive/distortion OS2 and have an ibanez ts9 on the way. ($102, cant go wrong!). And... I've got some pretty dodgy multi effects on my behringer amp but thats it.

So... in the hope of giving this forum some life! let me know what your using.

Cheers, Nick.

Mostly just use a TS9 with a tst808 chip in it. sounds fucking awesome. so much better then the ts9.

aslo have a Boss TU-2. seriously cant go wrong here. best tuner ever. its on the floor so its easy access live and it has chromatic, normal guitar tuning, half step down and whole step down. then it has bass and bass half step and bass whole step. its the best..

also have a digi tech RPA300 that i never use unless im fucking around on the computer. its pretty verstatile if you like hard rock/metal.
hardly any clean sounds.
i'de stay away from it if you dont like heavier music.

also used to have a behringer delay pedal which wasnt that bad but it didnt have direct input or what ever its called so it changed the sound of the amp and made it sound more stale. so i wouldnt rate it unless you have a solid state amp.

ive got a behringer distortion pedal, ds100 i think, sounds pretty good to me, can sound terrible if the battery's low, but its currently on a well used (can't see indicator light unless theres a shadow on it) battery and still sounds alright

i use pretty basic stuff. boss tuners, boss chrorus/flangers (when i need em). Line 6 Delays, Rat distorsions and heaps of interesting overdrives... When I comes to overdrives, its a sound your probably gonna be using ALOT so buy fucking good ones. I use fulltone, aswell as a overdrive pedal designed by chris cheney, manufactured by this dude in sydney.

its called a 'scream machine'.

its pretty much a fulldrive 2 clone but WAY better.

chris has been using it for about 18 months now, he uses it about 80% of the time

WHITE FALCON
05-08-2007, 07:07 PM
thats awesome.

so a fulldrive 2 is just like a pedal right that has a couple of stages of overdrive?

i havnt really looked em up.

have you got any pics of it mick?

i was designed by chris cheney.

my effects story is a long and sad one... but it has a happy ending. to save you time i'll give you the short version. I bought a whole load of great effects- electroharmonix small clone (chorus) great pedal, made famous by kurt cobain, used in come as you are etx. Boss Compressor- as far as they go pretty standard but sounded good. A HBE power screamer overdrive- amaaaazing pedal, hand built in america somewhere, great range of sounds, a boost option, just awesome. All very well.... until everything guitar related I owned: recording stuff, guitars, pedals, amps was stolen. My new flat was robbed within about a week of moving in... I should add I wasnt insured at that point... yeah, I know, try not to cry.
aaaanyway, long and short I managed to wing a claim through my parents house insurance and got most of it back. Have rebuilt some of what I lost but I took some different choices along the way. At the moment I use the vox tonelab SE multi effects pedal- I usually hate multi effects units because they sound really compressed and generic and are only any good if you are into heavy heavy stuff. But this one is really great, allows you to change the effects as much or as little as you like, plenty of room for your own effects, so many options and the dummy valve amp circuit makes all the difference to give you a great tone. It's modeled on the most popular pedals around so it's got all the line6 delay, ibanez ts9 (which I hated in real life by the way), marshall amps, cabs, mesa etc... not identical obviously.. but nice to have if you don't have a nice amp. I also use a TC electronic dual distortion which has a fantastically crisp tone to it, great little pedal. Finally a Klon Centaur which I only just got my hands on, bloody expensive but worth every penny. Hand built by this dude somewhere in the US, circuits are kept a secret by him, great sound, use it so so much.... and thats where I am right now, more to be added within the coming months I hope...

I have a distortion pedal, a delay pedal and a multi-effects unit like the one at the top of the page, which is broken. I used to have a phaser as well, but it didn't work

I've kinda been testing out effects heaps within the last few months. Seriously.. please please please take my advice on this one.. buy aussie made gear!! M.I Audio (based in sydney) make a tubescreamer clone that absolutely shits all over my ts9. My mate has an original 60's tubescreamer (which is the holy grail rare as rare tubescreamer that ssooo many pedals are based off..they go for like $800 on ebay) and this M.I audio pedal kicks its arse. M.I have a clean solo boost called a Boost N Buff and I THINK the tubescreamer clone is a Blues Driver or something ? Its blue..

Chris cheney used an Ulbrick Megalodon Super Solo pedal (melb made) for all his solos on state of emergency and modern art cos it left his fulldrive 2 and tubescreamer for dead.(sorry bones!! lol). He used it live around the modern art tour. He dosnt use the Mega live anymore... Chris Cheney(and myself now hah) are now using a pedal that is a fulldrive 2 clone, completely custom made by a guy who used to live in perth but kinda went mental and left.... Last i heard was he moved to sydney. The pedal is stamped 'J.D Electronics'. This pedal has two switches.. one overdrive section and one solo boost section (just like a fulldrive 2) Ive searched for them on the net but simply cannot find them anywhere as I dont think many have been made and the builder has kinda disapeared. This pedal is such a massive ingredient into Chris' sound as chris' amps are set clean. Chris has his Fulldrive 2 in his rig purely as a backup pretty much. Except for the compressed sounding solo in Til The End (which funnily enough, Kevin told me)

So yeah dont simply go into boss , ibanez, fulltone territory. Spend the same cash and get something alot better. My pick is M.I Audio which are sold pretty much everywhere now.

so i bought a new pedal today... had my eye on it for a while.... not sure if I should have done as it was really steep. It's a Klon Centaur-a boutique drive pedal- look it up... i'm not that sure how it really fits in my set up... its amazing and everything... it adds a subtle je ne sais quoi to the sound... but I don't know if its worth the price I paid for it. I might take it back in favour of getting a pair of TV classics instead... Mick, what do you know about 'em?

that's the pedal Matt Bellamy has custom built into his Manson's and I reckon if you are going to have a pedal that can make sounds like that, then having it build into your guitar so you can use all those crazy sounds is the only way to do it. Wicked pedal though!

I've used a couple of sets of TV's (man I love my Classics!) but to be completely honest the Filtertrons were great. I don't think the average player REALLY needs to upgrade - although I did :D

Maybe I should have posted this in the Customising thread :p

There really isn't anything wrong with any piece of gear mentioned in this thread. In fact, most of the stuff mentioned as being "not as good..." have been used by some of the most famous guitarists on the most highly acclaimed albums in history. Can you guess what made those albums so famous?

Hmm so i've got a new pedal question. (thank fuck cos this thread is dying in the ass) its a pretty simple one, but im in need of some advice. I'm after a delay pedal and as much as id love a line 6 dl4 i'm somewhat cash strapped so it looks like i'm going to have to keep it pretty cheap. So far i've considered the boss delays: dd3 and 6. can anyone tell me how much of a difference there is between the two or suggest some other alternatives? cheers for the help, nick.

Fritz
06-26-2007, 09:47 PM
Line 6's are overrated.

Well at least in terms of reliability. Have a look at the harmony central reviews on the DL4. nothing short of horror....

Seems all the non orginals (like the first year of units made) break. As in... ALL.

Chris' one is a really old one so thats probably why it hasnt blown up.

For something simular have a look at the boss giga delay (i think thats what its called). it does what a DL4 does, dosnt break and is alot cheaper.

the DD6 has way more functions than a DD3, but they seem to be functions noone would ever use seriously. I prefer the DD3

Now lets all wait for Ingocnito to tell me how wrong I am about everything ha ha

wizard_23
06-26-2007, 09:50 PM
cheers mick, shall investigate giga delay. Let there be posts... and there was posts.
