3000 grand could probably buy one of each type of amp ever!
(Sorry, I'm sure a real muso will be along soon to interpret your post without being a smartarse.)

i think jason mentioned something about a kelly quad box ages ago, that might break your budget though :p

where abouts are you?
I probably wouldn't go near a current production anything (fender, marshall, etc included) with $3000 to spend. Lots of great amps made by hand by people who care... I guess it depends whether or not you are after an amp that provides an *image* as opposed to an amp that is built like a tank and sounds fricken unreal.

If possible, I reccomend trying an amp from Dave Ulbrick (Ulbrick sound). There is most likely at least one dealer in Brisbane. Even if you have to drive a while, its worth it. Though it might be a bit over budget ... But if your spending 3000+ whats a few extra bucks for an amp that will last a lifetime?

Ulbricks were closer to the $5000 mark last time I checked (maybe just under it). They sound good, but I don't know about $5000 good. Their price seems to exceed there reputation. There are quite a few handmade aussie amps out there that will build an amp that will last a lifetime, yet cost half the price... I dunno, give them a try if you can find one... It might just be your thing.
Have you been down to BJ amps and given some a go? You won't find any marshall, fender, peavey or mesa that sounds as good, or that is built as good as a BJ amp. They even make amps that are voiced along the lines of marshall's and fenders.
For a few hundred extra you could check out Reynolds Valveart, Pete is a flippin' legend. He isn't just a cool bloke but he's reputation sits at nothing short of "tone-guru". There is also Sherlock amps. The fathead if you want versatility. For straight out rock I'd take a look at Ledford amps.
For $3000-$3500 there are plenty of US made amps that could fit the bill too.

you can get the arena 50 212 combo for about 3900 but still, thats a fair bit of cash. :)

simple.... just go to a huge 2nd hand store and spend the day there. you'll work out yourself what you like. its the best way. get something old tho :D ... or an old reissue!

im playing at this local festival thing next month and i need a amp that can be loud enough for 4000+ people any amps anyone might know?
Sammas
09-16-2006, 05:42 PM
Surely for a 4000+ audience you will be mic'ing the amp?
_jimmy_
09-16-2006, 05:47 PM
ok, but if they dont mic it how many watts should i be looking for?

4000 people would be probably the size of the Hordern or Entertainment centre. You'd need probably 4 full stacks. And if so, no one will hear your drummer.

I dunno, a million or so? and one heavy handed drummer.
Is this festival indoors or outside?

you might want to see if the festival operators are hiring a big PA for the lot of it, that would make the most sense

Not a chance then. You are going to need one pretty sizey PA to be heard by everyone.

that Reynolds Valveart's amps sound pretty good. i think it might be the recordings but they sound fairly awesome. They sound beter with a bit of distortion.
found an amp you like yet "Double anni"?

maybe a marshall JCM900 or JCM2000 DSL/TSL head? Big valve sound, not that i know much to be honest.
'cept lately they've been getting some reasonably bad publicity

i was wondering what equipment people bring to gigs, like amps, amp heads and all that
Fritz
10-17-2006, 03:50 PM
what do i take to gigs??
depends on the gig...
usually a Vox AC30, Fender Bassman '59
Or balls to the wall rock... Marshall JMP or Marshall JTM into a 1960BX quad box.
Or... sometimes I take my maton 325 acoustic and a PA :P
_jimmy_
10-19-2006, 07:46 PM
like amps,do you just bring a amp head and one quad box or more?
