Does anyone know what kind of guitar Chris was using when he recorded Carry Me Home?

Hey Tim!

When he plays it live he uses a Duojet, but I heard that during recording he used a few Gibsons or something.. We need Fritz on the case!

I know this may seem strange... but i think chris looks really strange with anything around his neck that doesnt have gretsch written on the headstock. With the exception of an acoustic that is. oh and that funky looking black 12 string (from memory) that he plays on the fhoi dvd. I think i'd feel much the same about angus without sg or hendrix without backwards strung strat.

In the I fought the law vid he did with greenday he uses a gibson es355 i think? and that looks all wrong. same with the tune he did with Jet... 'that's alright momma', wasn't it? again.... Chris and Gretsch are like peas and carrots.

For the track where he used the Malcom Young Jet do you know what parts he played with it?

i strugle playing some solid bodys thes days, the bridge is so low and close the the body, you have to change your whole style...well i do anywho.
and....id ont know where i got the greenday referene....just what came to mind when i saw it, white shirt, black tie and typical "punk" guitar jsut looked like something from greenday to me.

i thought it was a silver falcon(the guitar is actually black) he played with green day. fuck i hate it when people make comparisons between gd and tle for some reason lol.

and i rekon chris looks pretty sweet with nic's guitar. nic's setup sounds fucking awesome, i rekon just as good as chris's sound but different bcoz of amps and effects and shit. Hiwatts sound fucking awesome from what i have seen but i'de love to play one. anyone know much about them?

also the sg chris plays in that video is a SG Classic which has P90's which is why it sounds so good. it'd sound different with a 490R gibson pickup.

Johnny_Wah
05-31-2007, 09:02 PM
Is the 490R like a PAF?

Anyway, in the video for That's All Right Mama with Chris, I think the ES-355 sounded really muddy. Maybe its just the way it was recorded, but it sounded off.

It might have been the black falcon.. not sure. I didn't like the way the Gibson sounded... it sounds right for Nic, but not for Chris... I guess you just come to expect THAT tone, ya know? that well rounded gretsch sluttyness.... I kinda got the impression that Chris Cester wasn't really reacting to what Chris was trying to get him to do in that vid.... sorta looked like that anyway.. somehow looked like he was holding back.

I refer to TLE and the green day all the time... I usually say something like "they're a musically talented green day, but a million times better" - it appeals to the simple minds of lesser individuals.

ok... how in god's name do you know all this? alright here's one for you: why is it that we're seeing a lot of custom gretsches at the moment- jack white being one example- and yet they are not listed on the website at all, why not?

Fritz
06-01-2007, 06:40 PM
you all seem to know how i know chris and how i know everything about his gear..

regarding international ppl...

because im lucky to be working in the industry and I happen to talk to alot of famous people every week regarding transfering gear across the world, custom orders, arranging deliveries and payments at certain times (regarding guitars n stuff!).

I have a pretty good personal relationship with Chris, the guys from greenday, foo fighters, white stripes, bryan adams (haha) and most international acts that have anything to do with getting anything done by aussie luthiers, hiring (and customising) gear for tours when coming to Australia.

For example when greenday were out here last i got a call from billie from greenday in regards to hiring a backup strat, from there he sent out his marshall a few days in advance for a revalve and change in the amps electronics so it would operate safely in Aust (as it was customised for USA specs) so he got me to do all that stuff

And the other answer... Non mass produced custom guitars are not on the gretsch website cos there is no point.. you cant buy them so its not worth 'advertising' them on the site.

There was much discussion about jack whites custom gretschs on the gretchpages forum and im pretty sure the conclusion was that he gets them ghost built; that is they're made by his luthier to his custom specs but to pretty much imitate a gretsch. The exception is his recently aquired white penguin which he bought for a shite load of $$$ as it was an original.

penguin: http://www.gruhn.com/features/penguin/EG2875.html

and mick your secret... wont even bother asking just yet. at least it really gets the muso's corner buzzing again. cant wait to find out.

Sorry I wont be all wanky about it... im feeling nice today!!

IF the 15 expensive falcons sell real well and fast, then we at fender are gonna push really really hard to not only get more made, BUT also get an electromatic version of it made (mass produced) for around the $1300 mark.

I've been keeping this a secret since about January.. lol

BUT... its a case , lets see what happens. The fender australia team are 100% commited to get this guitar out in the world and show the whole world who this 'chris cheney guy from australia' is!! And if that means making a whole lot of striped down cheaper versions of his custom falcon, then so be it!

Its all a head office decision though (fender USA).. we in Australia will be fully proposing it to them though!!

or they could mass produce essentially the same pickup, i think that's what fender do... (actually that's just a guess, i saw a Seymour Duncan invader that had "Duncan Designed" on it rather than the usual "Seymour Duncan", is that what it means?)

yeah pretty much, duncan design are a cheeper range of pickups made by semour duncan. There made by semour duncan but for cheeper guitars like squares and stuff. i got them in my samick.

can i ask what's so bad about electromatics that everybody rags on them? yes, i understand they're cheaper, but the main thing is that the pick ups are the same as higher priced gretsch. i tried one thinking that it was going to sound like shit, the neck was going to feel awkward, they were going to go out of tune in a minute, but i really liked it and took it home.

after changing the bigsby (which was the only thing i didn't like - and which is the same bigsby as more expensive models), i really dug it and i'm sticking with it. i just don't get why people rag on them so much. if you consider the price amongst other brands, it's really not a cheap squire guitar at all. aiono, i don't look at a price tag when picking up an instrument; i just play it and listen to it. go figure.

There not shit, it jsut in comparison to a profesinal gretsch that they dont play and sound as good. They do however have different pickups, the electromatics have MegaTron pickpus that look the same as the FliterTron's that are on alot of the gretsches, but they are a fair bit cheeper, and there for you can expect them to not to have "that great gretsch sound". The electromatics also have some pickps called "U.S. DeArmond® 2000 single-coil pickups" and some other chrome covered gretsch humbuckers...which sounds liek they have yet to name them. Anywho the point is, there nto the same as on the Profesinal colection gretsches. But as for being nice guitars....Shit yeah, any gretsch si still gonna be a nice guitar, i wanna get one of them re issue Corvette's. and...that was way to long for a reply...

Yeah, I have one and I like it. My (American-made) Fender Telecaster needed a friend, and I wanted to try out a Gretsch but didn't have a couple grand to lay out for one. So I like to think of it as a "My First Gretsch" kind of thing.
