With at least dead already and many missing, sounding pretty bad. Following the train crash, really isn't Australia's week..

This could get interesting: global warming or not?

Eep this isn't good. :(
I hope everyone is okay
well obviously some people already aren't okay, but I can't work out how to phrase that better so hopefully you all know what I mean.

That ship looks a lot scarier there than what they showed on the news. I hope it gets better asap. My thoughts go out to everyone in Sydney.

Sydney has always had a big storm every few years. This isn't anything new, but it is a good spectacle.

hmmm my dad was down in sydney during the first few days of that...he was due to fly back on friday night but his flight got delayed 5 or 6 hours or something, but yeah he was in the heart of the city and he said luckily it wasn't too bad there, just extremely windy and pissing down...he said the outskirts of Sydney copped it though, and newcastle was pretty bad...

Just personally, i don't really think it's global warming, just a natural occurence that happens due to where Sydney is positioned, and yeah like Aaron said they have a pretty big storm every few years, but in saying that, they do tend to be occuring more frequently...

I can hardy remember the last time we had a storm like this here, but it's a nice change from having dry dead grass, to having our street turned into a river :p the winds were so strong over the last few days too so now theres a tree in the middle of the road

Considering we're "girt" by sea i'd say we were in the middle of a flood :p

What really sucks about these storms is that even after all this damage, our dams were hardly filled up

Pictures I took on Saturday afternoon:

At a local (closed) shopping centre and its carpark (Wallsend Plaza):

Around my neighbourhood:

Note the waterline on the right hand side of the picture:

The slab of this relatively new shed was completely undermined by water:

There was water gushing through this garage, bent up the garage door:

We're in the Blue Mountains - barely made the news. Had power out for a day, trees down all over the place, our gates flew off. Work (Kmart) had leaks all over the place but that's just because it's Kmart.

I mentioned it in another thread but James is currently in Wyong, helping out with the flood relief up there. Spoke to him before, he said it's absolutely crazy how much water there is.

This could get interesting: global warming or not?

i don't know if it's all global warming, but it's definitely something to do with nature. in the past couple years, the number, and intensity, of natural disasters in the entire world has increased. Tsunamis, hurricanes, freak wind and ice storms....something is going on for sure.

Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, and to the best of my knowledge (and most other scientists), earthquakes aren't really affected by a bit of global warming, not yet at least.

The rest though, yeah, good point. Sure the odd storm goes off, but I'd love to see some statistics on the number of 'major storms' affecting areas over the past however long records have been kept.

Have you seen Al Gore's, An Inconvienient Truth?

It talks about how just a degree or two rise in the ocean temp, due to the icecaps melting, which is due to global warming (in turn due to our excessive dumping of co2's into the atmosphere) can change the weather patterns.

It's not an exciting film, but one that I think everyone should see. *nods*

We watched that documentary/movie in civics class - it was interesting. We had to do questions while watching it, but I was too busy paying attention to the movie rather then writing my answers down.

I've been meaning to watch it, but we discussed the major subjects in a meeting at school to discuss how we can help with environmental issues at school. So far we're halfway to getting recycling and turning off more lights overnight.

I watched it for a uni project + I was curious. Very cool. One of the more interesting documentaries - usually I fall asleep.
