does anyone know or have any recordings of any old e boogies?

The Dying Start

First started playing it in 2000 when they were touring Roll On around the world.
It was originally called Psycho Twist.
The first versions had a pizzicato bass solo rather than slap bass....although the notes are the same.
The original versions had no bottle slide solo...and obviously no Mystery Train intro (which is only a year or so old)
The original versions had a drum solo by Trav, and the track was without a drum solo after Andy joined until only recently.
There are some old recordings floating around...but not many. I'll try to track down some.

Just wondering, was there any particular reason why Andy didn't keep the solo in until recently?

Julian
09-16-2006, 11:23 PM
I don't think he was too keen on it at first.

Bec

Fair enough, is Andy's drum solo now the sameish as what Trav's was?
Sorry for all the questions, just curious.

He's always stated that he just wanted to play the drums, and not show off...that's what Chris and Scott are out the front for. But i'm glad someone has conned him into it. It probably also reflects how comfortable he is with his identitiy in the band now.

Julian

I'm interested too. I'd love to hear an old recording of it

Nothing like it. And I personally don't like Trav's much at all. Andy's fits the song perfectly. :)

Julian
09-16-2006, 11:31 PM
Haven't heard Travs but I totally agree with you on Andy's fitting the song well. When I first heard he was doing one I thought it fuck up the flow of the song but it makes it so much better.

Bec

Thankyou very much :) I haven't heard Trav's but I agree about Andy's fitting the song well.
I'd also love to hear a recording if anyone has one?

Edit: Ahh sorry Julian, your post hadn't come up when I posted. Freaky.

The Dying Start

They played Hold Up @ Livid '03, so that vid will be floating around somewhere

Erin

Habibster
09-17-2006, 05:17 PM
Yes i'm pretty sure there was one at Splendour '05...i think they played a bit on the 'SOE:How to make an album and influence people' DVD...I think that's what it was called

The Dying Start
09-17-2006, 06:12 PM
I should be getting some Splendour stuff soon...if Hold Up is part of it i'll rip he video.

That'd be cool as! Seeing as they dont play it often then i doubt many people would have it.

The Dying Start
09-17-2006, 11:31 PM
They seem to go through patches where they play it. Back when MA first came out they tended to alternate between EOTW & Hold Up...

I was wondering when they started playing it myself. I didn't realize they'd played it for so long.

They played hold up when I saw them in Toronto. Good stuff I say

Erin

Its already been talied, but do what i've been doing and nag the crap outa them on their myspace. i wanna know that they played hold up on the 20th and 21st.

haha I'm not gonna lie but it was pretty derned great. Speaking of them as a live band. One thing I really liked about the set was they played a pretty even mix of old and new stuff with the exception of really old stuff from the ep's and that

hillaas
09-18-2006, 12:36 PM
OK - i'm gonna go and comment heaps on their myspace to get hold up. That seems like a good idea!

Yeah - i like how they do that. I don't like it when bands play about a third of their new stuff and a third old - it has to be spread out i say.

graverobbin'bastard
09-18-2006, 12:46 PM
I like a nice even mix. I understand wanting to play the new stuff and I do want to hear it live but I don't only want to hear new stuff hah

hillaas
09-18-2006, 01:19 PM
But they do need a bit of the new stuff for the people that only know SOE. That like when i went to my forst Green Day gig at the start of last year. All i knew was the American Idiot album and the song Good Riddance. It was bad when they played songs that i didn't know cos i didn't know em but when they played ones i did - i was rockin out!

graverobbin'bastard
09-18-2006, 01:43 PM
yeah but they gotta play stuff for the long time fans aswell. Hence needing a nice mix. PLus wasn't it nice hearing stuff you didn't know? By the way american idiot is a great album!

hillaas
09-18-2006, 01:58 PM
Yeah. Well after that concert i went and got a lot of their old albums and then when they came 9 months later i knew every song and it was soooo good!

graverobbin'bastard
09-18-2006, 01:59 PM
also the old stuff is great. I loove the album warning the one before american idiot. Minority is soo good

i fave would have to be dookie or american idiot, dookie just has a simple kinda of feel to it, and american idiot just shows how much better greenday have gotten.

I'd say American Idiot is the most mature one yet. Not only they lyrics to the ssongs but also their image cleaned up and instead of being some rowdy punk kids, they started wearing ties and pants etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they wore pants before.

Also, their image is still 'punk'.

the way people dress is less important. I hate that some people feel once they hit a certain age tht they must dress differently. Bullshit! dress how you want do what you want like what you want that is it!

dooooooooooo ittttttt!

Haha, speaking of Green Day, gotta say, Nimrod is probably my favourite album by them. Got it around 1998, my first GD cd ever and I love it to bits. I used to be (and kind of still am...but not so much now) a really big GD fan. But I've got to 'fess up to something...I don't own all their albums. The ones with frowny faces are the ones I don't have...

I loved Warning. It's in rotation for my favorite Green Day album. Insomniac is out on top right now though. :D

I knew a lot of people didn't like Shenanigens but I'd never think anyone could hate Warning.

when they're in the studio recording demos? i think that was it, but just the thunder struck sounding bit, i got an early version of e-boogie where it goes straight into the main riff, but i dont know how to upload it!

Right Click, Save Target As:

The Living End - Psycho Twist (30th March 2001) (http://www.23rdprecinct.net/Hotlinks/The%20Living%20End%20-%2016%20-%20Psycho%20Twist.mp3) - 2.3MB
(This is the earliest recording I know of. As you can hear it's still very much in it's infancy. It may well have been the first ever performance, I don't know.)

The Living End - E Boogie (26th August 2001) (http://www.23rdprecinct.net/Hotlinks/The%20Living%20End%20-%2012%20-%20E%20Boogie.mp3) - 3.2MB
(Name change, and has progressed to the point where it's quite recognisable.)

Awsome.

As long as the bass drum is audible I should be able to learn one of em pretty accurate

The Dying Start
03-19-2007, 09:25 PM
They're typically Trav, so you could probably recreate them by just flailing madly for 20 seconds.

Grumma
03-19-2007, 09:27 PM
haha probably. Just make a wall of noise where no instrument can be easily distinguished; bound to fool any non-musician.

Nah even if I can't hear the bass drum I could probably guess where he put it in. Or I'll just make it up as I go (like I do with most things)

Grumma
03-19-2007, 09:39 PM
Eh well the first version doesn't have a drum solo, and the second one lasts about 12 seconds and is pretty much just a couple of snare rolls mixed up with a bit of bass drum but we'll see how we go

*edit* it's 8 seconds and the bass drum is on the quarter notes (wonders of being able to slow it down and amplify the bass ^_^)

They play a Mystery Train intro now? :O

They didn't do this when I saw them not too long ago.

I must hear this!

The Dying Start
03-21-2007, 12:34 PM
It depends how long ago "not too long ago" ws. They may well have moved on now. But they've been doing Mystery Train since 2004 in the US, pretty much.

tainted_love
03-21-2007, 05:03 PM
I've seen them twice in the last year, is this since they stopped playing it?

I love the song Mystery Train and I highly doubt they could play it without me realising it. Perhaps they've stopped doing it.

The Dying Start
03-22-2007, 12:05 PM
Chrs just plays it to start E-Boogie. Then they do the audience shout-back bit. And then The actual crux of the song starts. Chris has also done Mr Sandman at the very start...i think instead of Mystery Train.

mattheal
03-22-2007, 04:33 PM
chris did both when they played in canberra last year

Johnny_Wah
03-22-2007, 09:05 PM
Yeah, from the videos I've seen, if Chris does Mr Sandman he'll do the Mystery Train bit as well.
