I'd like to think i am good on guitar but i am one of the people who does the verse and the chorus and the like and then gets up to one of Chris's solos and i'm like fuck that that's too hard.....but probably Prisoner Of Society, which isn't hard, and i still havent managed the solo but yeah that'd be it.

i'm one of the people that learns the solo, then doesn't bother with the chorus or verse unless there's some tricky stuff involved
the most recent tle solo i learnt was from fly away, i also know (or have my variations of) second solution, hold up, e-boogie, prisoner of society but is very dodgy though.

Hmm well for mine it's 2 songs.
Monday - The full song of course, including solo.
It's either that or;
Carry Me Home - The full song again, including solo. That solo is like omg! took a bit to learn it but it was well worth it in the end.
I put my own twists on my solos I learn as well I like to make them different.

I'm pretty chuffed to be able to pull off what's on your radio quite convincingly. Roll on as well is another one that's pretty much perfect with a few little changes of my own. End of the world as well... though not quite there yet and pictures.
I find I learn them and then forget them if I don't play them often enough. my ultimate one would be closing in i guess just cos its got so many styles in it.
I figured out the other day that Chris had been playing 8 years longer than I have at the same age (21) so to be able to pull of even some of the solos is pretty good.
I don't know if any of you guys have found that your writing- especially of riffs and solos- has come on since listening to the living end? I first discovered them almost 3 years ago and only in the past 6 months or so has a listener been able to pick up a real living end influence in my writing.

Yeah but its one thing to learn someone else's solos. To write your own as good as Chris'... thats completely different

yeah, he's worlds apart from me in that aspect.
i'll sit down and have a jam on the guitar, go "that sounds great! ... Oh shit it's a living end song. DAMN YOU CHENEY!*"
*dramatisation, may not have happened

The hardest songs i can pull of are as follows:
1. Closing In (Which I played for my HSC Piece)
2. E-Boogie (" " " " " ")
3. Fly Away.
4. Carry Me Home
There all hard but yes i have been playing guitar for 5 years and TLE influnced 4 of them so i've been tryin tryin and finally can pull it off.

of course it is, and my solo's are fucking ace. Not as ace as Chris' of course, but I like to think that they are a million miles better than the solo just copying the melody of the song.

Lets hope your solos are better than your modesty :p
I can play West End Riot, Roll On and All Torn Down the whole way through. Haven't played WER for a while though. I got a 9 out of 10 for playing ATD for my music practical, not too bad seeing as it was my first big music assesment thing on guitar and i'm mainly self taught.

most of the stuff actually.

09-19-2006, 04:03 PM
i can play e boogie , carry me home and all those things but i cant do the fast for the solo of nowhere town.
Wow... I haven't learnt one TLE song yet. Ever.
Actually, when it came out on the radio I learnt the chords to Prisoner Of Society.
I can't read or learn solo's, especially in tab form. All those numbers annoy me. I just make up my own stuff haha.

Nothing wrong with a bit of randomness. Random is good.

i can play most tle songs except the solos... damn you cheney!! but the hardest one is probably dont shut the gate. but its wicked. The solo he plays live for Prisoner of Society, i can smetimes get and I like whos gonna save us because the solo is easy. haha

POS im not that good on a guitar though

10-21-2006, 06:33 PM
His most complicated song would have to be Closing In, Technicaly speaking that would be the hardest, i started learnig it, never finished :)
I can play E boogie fine
And All torn down, i can play many of his versions but it changes every time,
anyone Know John Petrucci from Dreamtheatre?
He has a song on His solo album called Glasgow Kiss, i can fit most of his solos from that song into all torn down.

I was just joshin' with ya... they are pretty good but it's Chris we're dealing with here- I don't even register on that scale.
I'll put my money where my mouth is if I have to. Listen to all the shyte out there today- all solos ever do is copy the melody or repeat a couple of notes with a bunch of delay added to it. That's not a solo; I figure if you can step outside those walls and come up with something interesing that fits in with the song you are already half way there.

I have been entirely se;f taught for like 3 years and I can play all of Roll On, WER, ATD, POS (apart from the really quick trill towards the end of the solo) WOYR and I learnt Hold Up (solo and all) last night so I'm feeling pretty chuffed with myself.

i cann play most TLE songs. being one of those people who is obsessed with cheney's solo's its not a matter of wanting to learn them, its more i have to otherwise the song isnt finished.
i can play(in no order from hardest to easiest):
wake up
WGSU
second solution(live versions change all the time)
i can give you what i havnt got
long live the weekend
WOYR(love that solo)
reborn
Prisoner (the last part from the solo is almost perfect i just miss some of the notes. still sounds good :D)
monday (love that solo aswell)
West End riot
save the day(easy solo =D)
end of the world! (i cant play that insane run down note for note, but i can play that scale fairly fast all the way down)
ATD(many live versions)
roll on(many live versions)
carry me home (bit rough on the intro because i never learnt it properly ever)
english army
bloody mary
black cat (pshh =D)
til the end
we want more(took me a bit to get that last run)
one step behind (i swear there is a mistake in the tab book!)
nowhere town (i love that last run!)
closing in (ahhh it was the best feeling playing along to the album)
lol thats probably most of them!
i want to record some soon!

10-22-2006, 04:23 AM
how long have you been playing?
State_Of_Emergency
10-22-2006, 10:08 AM
wow, that's awesome
(i really should start learning guitar... i know three notes so far, and some sorta chord)
great job though.. and how long did it take you to learn all that?? :D
WHITE FALCON

uhhh i have been playing for like 2 and a half years now. i started off playing like sum 41, green day and all that shit and then heard of this awesome band called THE LIVING END. so pretty much i bought all the albums and sat down and listened to them and i have pretty much never stoped. and then when i listened to them i would go, fuck i wish i could play that! so i'de whip out the guitar and start playing the chords and shit. then the solo came and i was like GOOGLE search. then i found jason's site and thats like my home!
but i dunno it doesnt take me that long to learn the songs because i practise and practise them until they are pretty much perfect otherwise im not happy lol.
i have an acoustic recording of my band playing WGSU(acoustic). i uploaded it a while ago. but im gonna record some harded songs now. are there any you wanna hear?
Sabbz
10-22-2006, 03:35 PM
are there any you wanna hear?
I would, that would be cool.
Umm im not the best on guitar but i guess the hardest i can pull off is West End Riot. Solo and all.
WHITE FALCON
10-22-2006, 03:59 PM
WER solo. there is 2 ways to play it. the way cheney plays it is different to the tab on jasons site
Sabbz
10-22-2006, 04:02 PM
yeah i fiddled around with it until i got it to sound like chris's. I made it sound like how he does it live.
WHITE FALCON
10-22-2006, 05:07 PM
lol thats not what i meant. i ment where he actually plays it on the guitar. i actually like the studio version the best.

Its important to remember that at least live, Chris plays with Short Delay most of the time, to get a bigger sound
WHITE FALCON
10-23-2006, 10:03 AM
i knew that:D on the other page there is a delay channel he has setup called slap which is like half a second delay :D

my friend has been playing guitar for 2 years and a bit now and ive seen him play, Carry Me Home, Til the End, Prisoner of Society, All Torn Down, West End Riot, Nowhere Town, Roll On, Monday, Bloody Mary, Second Solution, No Way Out, Whats on your radio?...but he cant really play Uncle Harry all that well, which I find very weird...
Evil Chris
11-29-2006, 10:48 PM
Yet he can play carry me home, odd o_O
Daniel
12-01-2006, 07:55 PM
yeah Uncle Harry was the 2nd TLE song i learnt (first was Wake up)
tainted_love
12-06-2006, 08:54 PM
I can play Second Solution and Prisoner of Society but my soloing is a bit dodgy. My band does a cover of Tainted Love which is based on the Living Ends version but it's got a different solo and no slow breakdown part in it.

They recorded a version of E-Boogie. It's on iTunes music store.

Wake up on drums
All torn Down on Bass

it does, the thing thats hard to get is that tone
any ideas?

The last idea in my head was to fill up my water bottle :p
tainted_love
12-07-2006, 10:27 PM
On guitar. I'm not too worried about getting the exact tone but I was using an overdrive pedal and my amp was set with mid and treble to 10 and bass turned off and using the bridge pickup, which sounded pretty close. Also, I'm pretty sure Chris used delay on the intro.
WHITE FALCON
12-08-2006, 10:23 PM

get a wizard. get a white falcon/annie/6120. get a matchless. get a tube screamer. get a Line 6 delay modular. get a 12axe. get a curtis. get a supersonic.
intro has delay yes.:D
low gain on clean channel. high volume.
high bass, fairly high mid, medium trebel.
Daniel
12-08-2006, 10:25 PM
how much delay?
WHITE FALCON
12-08-2006, 10:31 PM
umm like half a second
Daniel
12-08-2006, 10:38 PM
what do you think of multi effects pedals like the RP250?
WHITE FALCON
12-08-2006, 11:12 PM
i have RP300A. its gathering dust in the corner.
its good if you like metal/hardrock and lots of distortion stuff.
you cant really get a good overdriven sound.
my Korg multi effects does an allright job.
Daniel
12-09-2006, 01:59 PM
ok
whats better for cheneys sound
strat, les paul, flying v
WHITE FALCON
12-09-2006, 03:58 PM
none.
hollow body will get you alot closer to that sound.
but i'de say strat. less wood then the others.
hahah it would look stupid playing TLE on a flying V
Daniel
12-09-2006, 04:01 PM
just puting it out there lol
Daniel
12-09-2006, 04:02 PM
what about a maton jazz acoustic from the 50's
WHITE FALCON
12-09-2006, 04:04 PM
its a electric acoustic?
the pickups would sound completely different.
Kevin
12-09-2006, 04:32 PM
sell them all and buy a gretsch
Julian
12-09-2006, 06:47 PM
Why the hell would you wanna do that? They're three totally different guitars, why would you wanna sell them?
As WF said, the Strat will sound best for tle but it's not the end of the world if your guitar doesn't sound exactly like Chris'. Go for the one that sounds best to you.
Kevin
12-10-2006, 12:31 AM
maybe i should have added a " :p " on the end of that.
but yeah, you can belt out any tle tune on any guitar, equalisers are your friend, but raw rock'n'roll is fantastic
Daniel
12-10-2006, 10:14 AM
nah no pickups
its got f holes and everything
and the strings are like violin ones
it sounds wicked
i cant sell them there my dads
i like strat best anyway
Evil Chris
12-10-2006, 01:24 PM
I Was amazed when I could play Prisoner Of Society so easily. But it dont sound so good on acoustic.
tainted_love
12-10-2006, 09:17 PM
you cant really get a good overdriven sound.
I have a Danelectro Overdrive pedal that I bought new for $20 and it's probably the best overdrive pedal I've heard. (At least the best sounding one that I've played anyway) The only problem is that it isn't a proper bypass pedal so when it's turned off it fuzzes up my clean sound a bit.
WHITE FALCON
12-12-2006, 11:36 AM
Yes well that would be a problem. Get a decent one like a OD-1 or a tube screamer. they are fairly standard ones. unless you wanna pay like $600 and get a fulltone :p
WHITE FALCON
01-16-2007, 11:37 PM
