And nah don't get Edward The Great, get Best of the Beast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Best_of_the_Beast)

It's a bit sad that when I saw this thread I thought of that before an actual Iron Maiden song. Come to think of it I'm not even too sure what they sound like.

Eh, thought it was something like that.

You can pretty much blame Iron Maiden for the creation of power metal lol

You can pretty much blame them for anything you like - their crimes against music and taste are many and varied.
Grumma

They're obviously doing something right if they're selling out stadiums after 30 years
Moose
09-07-2007, 10:45 PM
They manage to be universally thought of as pretty cool.
I liked stuff liike Twilight Zone and Wrathchild, but all the galloping along to high pitched warbling is a bit...pantomime.
But hey what I'm interested in is what a metalhead like you is doing on a site like this?
Living End are most metal fans idea of a bit soft, or worse still dadrock, i.e that old gits like me like them!
Respect and doing a metal sign at ya
Grumma
09-07-2007, 10:48 PM
i know heaps of metalheads who listen to TLE.
mind you most are guitarists that only listen for Chris :p
and the gallops are the best part of Maiden
Grumma
09-08-2007, 01:00 PM
Speaking of Chris.
He obviously likes them because they used to cover Maiden songs in the early days of the band
Not sure they would've sounded any good but spose at least they tried!
AAhhhhhhhhaahaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

billygal
09-12-2007, 04:57 PM
which maiden songs did they cover??? Can remember stray cats. violent femmes, adam ant, kim wilde but not any maiden. Are we talking before they became famous or after?????
Grumma
09-12-2007, 06:10 PM
Before, and they covered Run To The Hills, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner and also Phantom Of The Opera.
Not sure they woulda done all of the last 2 considering one is 13 minutes and the other 7 or 8 :p
billygal
09-12-2007, 06:44 PM
hmmm cant say I ever saw them do them but then was in alcohol induced state hehehehe.
Must have been around the POS days as dont think would have gone down with the rockabilly/psychobilly crowd they used to play to.
But more power to Chris Iron Maiden hehehe visualising him with the long head banger hair
Grumma
09-12-2007, 06:46 PM
POS days?
I'd be looking even earlier than that
billygal
09-12-2007, 06:56 PM
As i say most of early days are blur but we used to go to just about all their gigs up until about 3mths before single hit big as was organising wedding. But then not much of a maiden fan and cant imagine it ws played the same way (would be more rockabillised). So how old are you Grumma? Maybe we have seen each other in passing or are you a baby and just did the festival gigs??
billygal
09-12-2007, 06:57 PM
was Trav there drummer then?? or was it still Joey cause hubby cant remember any maiden either and he likes em
Grumma
09-12-2007, 07:03 PM
Im 18 and im only going by what Chris said in an interview
Grumma
09-12-2007, 07:14 PM
Yeah, in Australian guitar... actually, I'll dig up the quote 'coz I can... kay, Chris said "we used to cover "Rime of the Ancient mariner", "Phantom of the opera" and "Run to the Hills" and stuff back in the early days...
Thar she blows!
billygal
09-12-2007, 07:24 PM
think he may be pulling your chain. As I said I used to go to all their gigs and not once have I ever heard them do anything like that the longest song they used to play was Uncle Willy. Would have to either have been before I first saw them back in 91 or when the started doing festivals like meredith or BDO.
Grumma
09-12-2007, 07:52 PM
Or maybe you just don't know TLE as well as you'd like to think?
billygal
09-12-2007, 08:15 PM
I think I do know them better than you think I would!!!!!! As the only people that used to go to their gigs when we first met was their school friends and parents I would say that as far as their early days go Im an expert!!!!
Im not trying to pick a fight with you but I was there in those early days and Im telling you they didnt play it!!!
Grumma
09-12-2007, 08:17 PM
And I'm telling you Chris was there and he said they did play them.
Also to further the argument - on the previous page of my quote there's a picture of him wearing a Maiden tee
billygal
09-12-2007, 08:41 PM
how stupid of me of course its true you read it in a magazine!!!!!!!!!!
Bloody hell I know chris was there what do you think I am some kind of idiot what I am trying to get through to your pathetic little mind is that he never played it in the time I saw the band play live. And as far as him wearing a Iron Maiden T shirt BIG DEAL he wears loads of bands shirts doesnt mean he covers them. If you go back and read what I read I am not disputing that at some point they played Maiden simply the time frame you think it is.
Grumma
09-12-2007, 08:42 PM
Yeah . . .
Pretty sure they did cover them at one stage
billygal
09-12-2007, 08:46 PM
again not disputing that cant you read!!!!! Just saying it had to be after POS days as they didnt do it before then
Grumma
09-12-2007, 08:47 PM
How do you know?
Spoken to Chris or Scott about it?
How do you know it wasn't before they ever had their own originals?
billygal
09-12-2007, 08:52 PM
look let me explain this to you veeeeery slowly. I used to see them when they were a stray cat cover band before they had written any material of their own. This is why I am disputing the time frame you think they did them in BECAUSE I WAS BLOODY THERE!!!!! Hmmmm have you spoken to Chris or Scotty about it???? No you prefer to get your facts from a magazine. I spose you still think Elvis is alive and working at 7-11
Grumma
09-12-2007, 09:01 PM

as i said: owned
Owned my arse.
Not that you were old enough to experiance it at the time, but it was possible to see 'them' - being Chris and Scott - back in '91.
A little band called the Runaway Boys.
You might've heard of them.
A few of us actually saw them.
And dont recall them playing any Maiden.
But like billygal said, nice to see you still giving us a second hand account of what happened, rather than drawing on your own recollections.
Grumma
09-15-2007, 11:06 AM
It says there they formed in 92 as the Runaway Boys, and Chris and Scott knew each other before then anyway so it's possible they jammed out to them

Bout as much as the speeding fine I'm gonna get from today!

yeah I was guessing at least $140. I might not even be able to get tix on the day they go on sale, cos I have a service to attend then straight after mums flying interstate. I have a feeling they may sell out fast. damn damn damn
Grumma
09-17-2007, 05:08 PM

Ticket Prices*
Gold - $150.00
Silver - $99.00
*Transaction fees apply.
... I was close! hmm not sure if I want gold or silver. obviously silver would be seating and gold would be the floor, and as much as I want to be right up front Im prolly gonna be there on my own, cos I dont think anyone I know would be willing to come, so being a 5'4" female sandwiched in a crowd of boofheads wouldn't be much of a smart idea :p

my tickets were purchased approximately 17 minutes past 9 am. dont know if I got the first or second show... dad bought em for my on his morning tea break :p I wasnt allowed to go on my own so my dads gonna see if my brother wants to go otherwise he'll be coming :p he says he doesn't like maiden, although I bet he's lying, he likes sabbath and priest so im sure he'll like maiden! obviously hes knows em, so im sure he used to listen to them a fair bit back in the day, but my brother is a metal head so he might be coming. haha that'll be weird but, I havent seen him in a few years

I went to the show in Melbourne last night. The only word to describe it was EPIC.
The story so far.......last night my friend said that he needed a replacement to go with him because his sister was sick so she couldn't go. My parents said no and because I'm a goodie goodie, I did my homework to 'prove' that I was 'worthy' lol. Next morning I woke up and asked my parents when they were all happy lala (lol) and then they said yes. School was so shit but hey, I just couldn't wait for my second favourite band (E-cookie if you know who my favourite band is lol). Got home, dressed up, got dropped off and went into the arena. Got my Somewhere In Time T-shirt, sat down (we were near the back but we had a dead-straight view of the stage at least) and watched Lauren Harris. She was like Hillary Duff mixed with metal and the guitarist seemed like a wannabe Zakk Wylde but still pulled a good show. 2nd band was Vanishing Point and they reminded me of Dream Theatre so much, but still pulled up a good show. After that, Maiden went on (well duh).
**SPOILER PART**
WE waited for about 30 mins and it just got so intense. one of the songs that they were playing in the background sounded like some epic-thing and everyone assumed that they were gonna go on but we were wrong lol. There was people who threw Beach Balloons into the crowd and security took it away so everyone started calling them wankers (Aussie slang for Gays fyi) and we got it back lol. The room went dark and a video of Bruce flying Ed Force One went on and showed the band getting off etc. then the start of the Aces High video went on. Aces High went off with a BANG and it was just crazy. After that 2 Minutes to midnight went on, EPIC!!! Third song was Revelations, excellent song but personally I wished they played Alexander The Great or something instead then THE TROOPER!! The background changed form time to time (I think there were 5 designs in total) and the second I saw the artwork, I just went "Yep, it's the Trooper", F**KING EPIC!!! lol after that Bruce started promising that they'd come back sooner (they better lol) and that they're going to Sydney tomorrow and of course the Melbourninas started booing and then with Brisbane we all booed even more lol. Somewhere later on (not sure) Bruce starts taking a piss outta Canberra because they had to go there during the Number Of The Beast tour and asks why we have it "It's just like Ottawa, it's pointless." They played other songs (I forget setlists so quickly) which included Rime Of The Ancient Mariner (BEAUTIFUL they filled the stage with smoke, it looked so cool. Before they played it Bruce started talking about albatrosses and Sailors, he's really knowledgeable), Wasted Years (OMG OMG OMG I went crazy tro that song haha), Number Of The Beast (screaming out 66 was awesome lol) and Run To The Hills (my favorite for the night). Last song was Iron Maiden (of course) and the Somewhere In Time-era Eddie came out. Of course there was gonna be an encore so they played Moonchild, The Clairvoyant (awesome) and Hallowed Be Thy Name (oh yeah baby lol). But then again screw the ranting, end of story lol.
p.s. It's probably the 2nd best show I've seen (Living End at The Palace was my fave lol)
p.p.s. I got there for FREE!!! That's what makes it even more epic
p.p.p.s. I'm gonna post pics, I'm just putting them up on Myspace first

In the second picture I'm about in the bottom left hand corner somewhere.
And last night shit all over anything The Living End are ever likely to produce as part of a live show

Yes I can see how a few mummies would improve TLE's shows.

i didn't say anything about mummies.
Iron Maiden's show was an extravaganza, and it made pretty much any other band I've ever seen look second rate as far as the lengths they went to in order to put on a ballbusting show

yer, Iron Maiden are good for that.
I second the fact that it was one of the best live shows I've ever been to. Muse and Bruce Springsteen are equally tied with Maiden for top place I think..

Yeh, but you can see them on the stage.
I'm poking moderate fun at your claim that they 'shit' all over anything TLE are ever likely to produce as part of a live show.
By that yardstick I reckon Shakira would 'shit' all over Maiden, if a spectacle is your major concern.
And she has nice hips and toons.
(Attaches bait, casts off and waits for the catch....)

No. It was a case of Grandpa's on stage and Grumma's in the audience.
It wasn't the fact that it was a major spectacle, it's that it was done so well. For example, for one song (I forget which), they brought the light frame closer down, and had the smoke machine and it created a really eerie atmosphere - even in an arena. Then they had pyrotechnics for number of the beast - and it was subtle enough to be effective, plus it was in time.
Shakira would be crap live, 'cause people only know that one song about her breasts being small and not mountains or whatever. ;)
And Grumma, tell him thanks!

The firework-things were in time in that song as well, after the Stonehenge-esque part :p

If anything that just proves how good Iron Maiden are
