so basically he used to have his pedals set up in his rack. He has a device called a GCX controller. Basically....... One lead from your amp goes in 1 side and one lead to guitar guitar goes out the other side! Which is complete true bypass (bypasses all the stuff im about to say) And in the middle you have 8 'loops'. Example, 1 small patch lead comes out of Loop 1 and into your Effect pedal and another patch lead from your effect pedal back into Loop 1 again (there is an input and output for each loop). So that way you get a direct pure signal until you engage a certain pedal(s). As opposed to having your pedals set up infront of you and therefore your signal 100% of the time is traveling through multiple pedals and circuit boards, heaps of patch leads etc. Which leads to losing alot of clarity in your sound, you get a muddier sound overall. Lotsa signal loss!

A voodoo lab foot controller then comes out of the GCX unit and enables which loop (or effect) to turn ON and OFF.

All the effect pedals are turned ON and chris would engage pedals his pedals by switching the certain 'loop' on with the foot controller.

Chris does not use the footswitch as 'patches' to turn multiple pedals on. If he wants 3 effects turned on he presses 3 individual buttons on the footswitch controller. He dosnt really have set sounds for certain songs when playing live. When it comes to which overdrive to use, he changes his mind each gig. Thats why he never sets up patches. He keeps it as simple and vesitile as possible.

Chris now uses a custom made foot controller instead of the voodoo lab controller. Mainly cos with his old one, he had it custom meshed and it was big and bulky and Chris wanted to be able to have easier access to his effect pedals, so if he felt like changing settings he didnt have to walk back to his rig, open the self and change settings. He wanted his pedals set up infront of him. No worries...

We made him a custom made pedal board with two levels. The meshed voodoo lab footswitch went away and we custom made the same kind of controller that would fit onto his board right next to his pedals, for a couple reasons 1. not as much space used up and 2. easier to transport

(I'll be updating this post with photos as I find/upload them).

In the past he used his pedals which were placed in his rig. Which were looked up to his loop controller. From there they became switchable with this :

In the photo below; in the middle in the rack; it contains his old rack mount tuner, effect pedals, wireless units and his loop controller.

That was when he was only using one delay pedal, an additional overdrive sound (other than his amps sound), a clean boost and a dirty boost, aswell as a tuner.

He now uses about 8 pedals aswell as channel switching on the wizard, and with the addition of him wanting his pedals set up infront of him rather than in his rack for easier access (ha sounds dirty), he had a two level pedal board built, and the voodoo lab meshed controller, due to its bulkiness was replaced with a custom made job which does the same thing but was able to be mounted on his pedal board.

Step 1. Purchase ACDC's 'Let There Be Rock'

chris', curious to know which one it is on his pedal board, if it is there.

It actually isnt accessable from the modded controller. In his all his pedals, down the bottom is a chunky White pedal (that is not hooked up to the controller) which is his line selector. The channel switch is hard wired into button #2. Button #3 is Amplifer 2 or 3 ON/OFF. Button #1 has been covered by a Coke bottle lid and taped over so the button cant accidentally be touched (wizard on/wizard off)

Some of the most ingenius ideas come from really simple things. Reminds me of that space thing where americans tried to make a pen that was funcitonable in zero gravity space where the Russians used a pencil

i'm guessing a 12au7 is a type of valve? but yeah, would someone care to repost that all pedals shot so i can see that line selector? and can Chris actually control the power (on/off) of the amps with that switch or is it just where his signal is going?

Fritz

just where his signal is going/coming from

Hey, slightly off topic here, sorry, but I thought id throw it in here anyway because I believe that Fritz would be able to give the best answer. Now, business, could you fill me/us in on a little info about the White Falcon Malcolm Young used in the very early 80’s, especially Back in Black. All I could find was: it was a 59, and it got effed when someone tried to fix it, so he shipped it (this isn’t relevant). It looked like a totally bitchin’ guitar though, it had 5ish toggle switches, and yeah, coolest looking white falcon I have seen. I would post a picture, but I don’t know how, sorry, but if someone tips me off I’ll post. Thanks

hahaha BASICALLY it has knobs and swtiches regarding Bass and Treble volume control. Just extra bullshit that wasnt needed hehe

Ha, I thought it did seem a little unnecessary, although it still looks awesome, a bit like them crazy Japanese guitar you can get from like the 60’s and 70’s. They have like...50 knobs/switches that look like they could do anything from grating your cheese to selecting the pickup, to turning your bedroom light on and off and MORE! Haha, cheers fritz

we did invent the electric guitar (Les Paul is from my home town), Rockabilly, Gretsch and various other things that without which the world would suck.

So don't hate on us too much.

but we can suck.
