View Full Version : Talkin to the guys...

May

So I was talking to Toni, and just wondering...

Whenever I get the chance to talk to the guys - after gigs, signings, album launch, whatever - I always have a million and one things I want to ask them, and without fail, my brain turns to mush and I go through the usual boring "you guys rock", "show was great", blah blah babble, and cant think of a single intelligent thing to say! :o

It's soooooooooooooooooooo annoying, cos there's sooo many many things I always think I'd like to say/ask/whatever. Gah!

Does anyone else experiance this?
Do you reckon they'd be put off by a list of questions? (cos at least then I could read off the list instead of just forgetting)
Or am I more of a lost cause than I suspected?
And does anyone have any tips for overcoming this???

I long for the day when I can sit one or more of them down in a pub, or cafe, and just talk. With out all the gig hype-ed-ness pulsing through my system...

*sigh*

haha - that happens with me - i haven't had much chance to talk to the boys specifically - but yeah - in general i do this often!

it's either that or i say stupid random things and babble...

i'ld just be honest 'as much as i would love to have a converstaion with you, for the life of me, i don't know what to talk about'

though i've never even seen them from a distance, let alone talk to them :D

I'm the same. I forget all sorts of stuff. I ten to just grin like a wanker and say something about the coming, or past festivities.

I tend to just babble at them, lol, and don't give them a chance to say a word. Or, on some occasions have a complte blank and can't say a damn thing!!

Dunno why, I can talk to other bands just fine, well most of them anyway haha. :p

peter coombe would be one of those artists that i would get babbly at i think

either that or i'd sing at him - haha i would never live that down if it happened so i wouldn't let you know about it!

When I first met them I was intoxicated. Scott couldnt work out who was more drunk, me or him.

But after all it was my 21st.

Last time I met them I didnt say much, cause I was tired, had been on my feet all day, and worked hard. Plus Chris was talking more than any of us.

and when the power went out, he tried telling me ghost stories. haha

First time I met them I was so annoyed, after years of following the band I had all of these questions in my head I wanted to ask and then in their room I just couldnt think. Im sitting next to Chris on an esky and all I could ask him about was the new album (was October last year)

When I met them a few weeks ago it was heaps better, because I had met them before I could talk to them no worries.

Can't speak for anyone else here, but they must surely think that of me by now... :o

9 years man. And the sad thing is it feels like it's getting harder to talk to them, not easier... :(

Once you settle in they're really easy to talk to....but the times I've met them have usually been quite brief...or there are a pack of screaming girls butting in, so you don't get much chance...

When Sarah and I saw them in the streets of Launnie, all we could manage to say was "hi!" and then we kept on walking! :p Mind you, it was also a struggle to keep ourselves from jumping on them at the same time!
I did however, yell out Good Luck to Andy and Scott when in Melbourne in may, but they seemed a bit confused as to who said it!
I had a few questions I wanted to ask them after the Hobart show last week but didn't get the chance. If I do get the chance one day, I just hope to god that Chris doesn't look at me with *the look* that he does sometimes. Oh man, I would melt right there and then if he did! :p

I've met them several times, the first being when i was just out of hospital and on new medication, and i can't think of that day without wanting to bash my head against the wall, i was quiet for the first half then mentioned i'd just been in hospital, and chris asked why, then i pretty much spilled out my whole life story. I know that they wouldn't remember it, but it still makes me cringe.
I've met them several times since, and it gets easier to talk to them each time, they are the nicest guys ever!
Sorry that this wasn't good advice..

I was relitevly (whatever) calm today.. hey guess what, me and a bunch of the tent-ers talked to them only a few hours ago! OH MAN! I'm kinda going crazy at the moment.. we just talked to them about our creations (including food and dolls and drawings and tents...) and yeah, shame they had to leave but yay, for the time we did spend talking to them they are so great and nice and... *rambles*

I must admit, months ago when everyone started talking about the tent, I thought it was a silly idea. (Sorry!) But tonight was actually loads of fun. It was set up on the foot path across the road from the Palace and we all stood around it chatting and what not, waiting for them to come out.

I'm alot like everyone else here, I turn into a mess whenever I talk to someone and completely forget whatever I have planned to say, instead just telling them how much I enjoyed the show, yada yada yada.

I know what you mean, Ally! A few years back, when I was still swimming competitively, I had a good long chat with Grant Hackett and at the start he asked me if I was ok, because I went pale and had trouble talking to him! I felt so sick and coudn't tell him what I really wanted to say, but all was good and I've had several good chats with him since. Somehow, I don't think I could be so calm with TLE! :p

I've meet the boys a couple of times now and I can still never think of anything interesting to say to them, it's usually something about how good the show was or some stupid comment about what they are wearing. Although when I met Andy at the Perth gig I managed to wish him a belated happy birthday and give him a present.

Sarah
09-21-2006, 02:26 AM
I've met them twice.

The first time I just talked at Chris...

I felt really bad afterwards, cos I didn't say anything nice at all - not even how much I liked the album or looking forward to Livid or anything. In fact I was pretty horrible to him. Didn't say much to Scott or Andy cos they came out later when all the masses were around.

On Saturday I was a bit calmer - probably cos I was dead tired, and frozen. I let them do the talking this time, but I still didn't say anything nice. I mean, I told them i was at both shows - but that doesn't mean i thought they played well, or I had a great time or anything. bah

There's lots of things I'd love to ask them, but if I just remember to say something nice just once than that would make me feel much better - them too I'm sure!!!

I met each of the guys and Rae, and I held long winded conversations with all of them, except for Andy, who always seemed to be in a bit of a hurry. It wasnt in a one-on-one situation (I was with a group of my friends staking out by the tour bus), and we seemed to feed off each other's comments. For example, Chris walked out of the bus with a cup of tea...and somehow my friend Kris talks about the invention and history of tea as a drink. I'd say to be spontaneous and just say whatever comes to mind...

It was so interesting to read about all yours experiences. Never meet TLE yet (we are from Ukraine) but we sure if it happenes - we will talk only about how long was our way for this moment happening. But we not sure that all english words will not wipe out from our brains that time :( Can you ever inmagine that when you will meet Chris or Scotty and must talk on different language! Aaa-hh! And your aussie pronunciation is way harder to understand than american. It's horribly if it's finally happens and we'll not understand what any word which guys can talk to us :(

We are also feeling same when talked and met some Ukrainian and Russian famous musicians. We are working with punk band nearly 6 years and during last 2-1,5 years we stopped to feel this stupor when you meet with musician and must talk something.

What about Living End we talk only with Rae by e-mail. She is super nice and it was pleasant. We think we are know well what we want to tell them - we'll not asked something, we'll just tell thanx for their work and tell how strong was their influence on ours rockabilly\punk movement in Ukraine. But we only thinking that we'll can controle a situation and our emotions :)

YES!! The two times i actually talked to them, mainly the one at edgefest where i talked to the guys for around 5 minutes, i was totally lost and just overawe'd. Asked every question that's been asked in the book except one, i needed to know which beer at least one of the guys preferred, VB or ??? can't remember was some other Aussie beer, but yeah they all said VB to my delight. Yeah next time, i'm gonna try and ask Chris what settings he's got going through his amps, FINGERS CROSSED. :D

the first time i meet them i hardly talked. Then when we were sitting outside scott and chris went out in there car and when they got back i asked chris if i could touch his guitair but ended up just getting a photo with the case(like the one in the picture thread. Then we asked him for food as we hadnt eaten anything all day and he came back and gave us lollies, which we didnt eat. Then when i meet them the next day after the show i asked Andy for his VB bottle which was still about half full so he skulled the rest and gave me the bottle which is then got signed. Then when they were leaving them i wished them a great tour and have great fun along the way

I met them yesterday after the show. I asked him how the Vans Warped tour was and our conversation started there. :)

I wasn't nervous or anything, it was cool. I love they way he was willing to talk, it wasn't like he had to meet up with fans and talk to em, he really wanted to start conversations and such. It was great.

I'll meet them again some other time. ;)

I avoid it... normally I know the questions I ask anyone, be it the lads or any other musicians I admire I have the privelage of meeting, are trivial and pointless and they've prolly been asked 1000 different ways before and they are sick of answering them. If I happen to be standing around someone who is talking to someone I'll normally just say g'day, shake hands, say "good show" and keep walking.

John Feldmann from Goldfinger, who I met in 2003 for the first time was an exception to the rule. I was reading one of his PETA flyers, the KFC Cruelty one, before a show and afterwards I went up to his signing table to say hi and he said he remembered seeing me at the show they'd done the year before and thanked me for coming to see them again. I talked a little bit with him about his campaiging for animal rights and I said that while I'm not vegan/vegetarian I thought it was good for him to have a forum ie being in a band gives him a way to voice his beliefs/campaigning in tandem with his music. But I told him I was off KFC chicken at best and he respected my views and signed off on a pamphlete for me and was more than happy to have a photo with me when I asked him. Last year when I saw them play he saw me in the front row and pointed at me as if to say "hey! i know you!". SO whenever I see goldfinger play now I'll always make the effort to go say hi to John.

Other people I want to meet I'd either be afraid to talk to or not no what to say. Mike Ness and Dave King are the 2 musos I most wanna chat with. I'd be too scared to talk to Ness but I'd just pay out dave for being a manchester united supporter :P

When I met TLE at the air port, I asked Chris if he was the drunk bunny at Green Day, then convo then leaded to them telling me how drunk they were and then Andy & Scott start teasting Chris and calling Him Ronald McDonald and asking for a Happy Meal.

I just stood there and had no idea what to say.

Then when Chris and I went through the security bit together, he was talking to me, as he was he was taking off his leather jacket and belt, I had no idea what he said to me during that minute, I was drooling.

Then 5 minutes later, a security guy asked Chris and I to move and pushed me aside, my foot got caught in Chris's scarf and I fell on him. That was embarassing and I was speechless.

Ive had a few awkward moments, ha ha!

Yeah i've had many awkward moments. I learnt my lesson to never talk to bands while on new medication! Though the one i cringe about most, is when i'm standing alone in a hotel lobby crying cause all my friends were drunk, and Chris had to walk past and recognise me. Not one of my best moments!

"Yeah my friends are staying here.... and waaah everyones drunk and bf passed out locked in bathroom and we nearly got kicked out and i didn't want to talk to you incase it was annoying and waaah"

I don't *really* count the signing as a meeting. Like we talked a bit, and they loved the fake backstage pass and all but it was way to rushed!

Well I'd be surprised if I saw Scott pushing a pram in my suburb! Or anywhere really. I wouldn't really know what to do, I'd want to talk to him but I wouldn't want to be annoying or anything. I'd probably just casually say hi or smile like some people do to randoms when walking anyway, and hope he decided to start up a conversation or something.
I've never met any of the guys anywhere which isn't TLE related.
Like most of the other people here, all the times I've met TLE I always forget anything intelligent I thought of to say before. At least I'm not alone :p
Although at the tent on wednesday it wasn't too bad, hopefully I'm getting better with talking to them.

Yeah i hate the idea of bugging them when their with family or just attempting to shop. With the first shopping centre incident, it was Andy headphone shopping in JB and it was a week after having gone backstage and i was wearing a TLE shirt. So i walk in there, walk past him staring into the bargain bin and then a split second later it clicked (i think it was the hair that did it) and i did the biggest of double takes! He noticed, grinned and pointed in recognition and i left it at that.
Then the week after that Chris was on the phone, with Emma, pushing a pram and as if i'd bug him in that situation!

I accidently spilt one of the guy's VB on my signing card. I felt like such a dork.

Well my TLE meeting story is well nothing really special.
I couldn't really talk to them coz Presidents of the USA were playing so it was kinda too loud to talk.
I asked if they'd sign my tshirt and signing card. I said that they were awesome. And I asked if I could have a hug. Now I have been trying not to ask musicians that (when I was younger I used to ask bands for a hug and friends mocked me) but I dunno I guess I was just having a fangirlish moment. I didn't scream or anything (in my defense of my band hugging I have never screamed/jumped around or gone I love you to anyone famous I have met)

Nothing wrong with asking for hugs. Better then just throwing yourself at them!

Yeah I wouldn't throw myself at them.
I do have an embarrassing hugs story. I went and saw this Christian band play in my town about 4 years ago and I got a hug from the guitarist (who is/was very cute) and I went to talk to the singer who was shaking hands with people.
So someone says something about handshakes and I started talking about how I liked hugs and yeah I'm rambling on about this stupid stuff and then the guy says "Yeah we have a no hugging policy".

I felt so embarrassed.

Jessii
09-23-2006, 10:48 PM
Aww, well i met Jesse from Brand New and he hugged everyone and went to hug me, and i used to have panic attacks when touched, so i backed away. He goes "You don't like hugs?" and my sis says "She hates being touched" and he smirked, cornered me, and picked me up and spun me in circles in the air. My sis took a photo, i have the most retarded look on my face.

I can't help but cringe at the thought of running up and hugging one of the boys, or anyone famous for that matter. Maybe it's just me, but I would hate to be hugged by someone you've only just met.

Jessii
09-23-2006, 11:26 PM
Yeah i used to really freak out when people would touch me. Had awkward moments posing for photos with tle, or when Chris has put his arm on my shoulder and i've cringed and jumped away.
I don't freak out as much now, and i trust the guys. I hugged Chris for the first time this last show, and when i showed my mum photos from the gig she was like "Awww you let them touch you!"
Chris put his arm around everyone but me when taking photos. Surpised me that he remembered.

mel_bound
09-23-2006, 11:35 PM
I don't like being touched either, but I dunno, when Andy put his arm around me for the photo I didn't really mind..? Maybe I was still in 'mosh' mode, because you really can't avoid being touched in the mosh. Yeah. Strange.

Gosh the closest thing to (lets say having the guts to say hi or wateva) was last monday i went to see where the palace was, and i was walking down the main and Dave Hughes walked past and i looked at him and he looked back. I just kept walking. and there have been times like down my main rd (Union Rd, Ascot vale, for those of you wondering) i have seen like neighbours ppl and stacks of footy players, but i just cant bring myself to bother them. If i met TLE, im sure id do the same bloody thing...Shame they didnt come out and greet us on Fri nite

NowhereTown

So i walk in there, walk past him staring into the bargain bin and then a split second later it clicked (i think it was the hair that did it) and i did the biggest of double takes

After a recent show on the way home we were behind a taxi and the headlights shined into the back window of the taxi and i saw hair like Andys. So we pulled up next to the taxi at some stop lights and everyone was looking to see if it was andy and one person waved. Then we took off and left the taxi behind. Then about 5 minutes later the taxi drove passed us and the person we though was Andy was actually some drunk dude.

Well!
Met up with the boys backstage after the gig last night, and amongst other things, mentioned this thread.
Chris was like "...people are *scared* to talk to us? Wow!"
Scott mentioned he'd been reading through it yesterday and thought it was amusing.
Andy ... didn't say much :p

It was awesome meeting them again - they remembered me from last time - "Soundcheck girl!" - I had a little friend with me, Joel the 8 year old (for those who remember) so we chatted and he told them about the speech he did on Chris.
Very awesome - great bunch of blokes :D More stories later - gotta go to work :(

Jessii

Glenn, about how you said you'd have trouble understand scott when he's had a few.

At 5am we were standing behind him at a bar, and he turned around and yelled jibberish in our faces, and we are like "Um..." *thumbs up* and he goes "oh shit i thought you were someone else"

We just back from Lviv (second major town after capital of Ukraine). There was open air gig of Goran Bregovic with his orchestra! We don't sure you all know who he is, but he is world famous man. It was our second time when we watched his performance!
So we went to soundcheck early in the day and wait for meet for his musicians. In the orchestra are 8 brass pieces, 3 female singers and one drummer/ second vocals and he is a second frontman of the band. His name Alan, he is 20, and he have a fantastic voice! So we wanted to meet him exactly!
So we went to the stage fourth time (we made it every hour) and watched Alan just arrived! He carry his big drum to the stage and nobody recognized him except us. First moment we was catched unawares because we and he went there in the same moment!
Anyway we come close to him and talk a little in english ( they talks on serbian). We asked for making a photo and he promised to came back after soundcheck. We feel no fear and nervousness at that moments! we didn't understand why!!! We made a photo and he said: "You wellcome!". It was a big luck because at the evening there was thousands of people, two vip zones and bunch of local politics and selebritys, so we feel ourselves as coolest!

Ha, Ha I always think back to my stupid moments and laugh!
Good times, Good times! The scarf I tripped over on the 19th of May 05, Chris is wearing in the shower for the first 20 seconds of the Festival Hall DVD. I just blushed and cracked up laughing.
Im never going to forget that and as long as Chris still wears that bloody scarf, I'm going to blush every time.
I hope next time I see em, that Chris isn't wearing that fucking black scarf!

This thread is such a laugh!

When I met Andy I was getting a photo with him and my mum was taking the photo, and we're standing there and she's like 'Okay... it didn't work that time... I'll take another one...' and did that a few times. It was embarrassing and I'm standing there laughing like a wang.
When I met Chris it was at Greenday last December, and I was there with 3 other friends and we were sitting around in the circle of love and my friend Marty says 'Hey, isn't that the guy from TLE?' and I look around and lo and behold the mighty Chenmeister is walking through the crowd so I grab a texta off Marty, run after him shouting 'CHRIS!' and grab him on the shoulder, he sorta turns around looking scared/shocked and I'm like 'HI!' in a really delerious tone, and he's like hi... and I asked him to sign my envelope... and he said 'sure' and i handed him the pen and envelope and he's like 'can you do me a favour?' and I'm like 'OF COURSE!' and hes like 'take the lid off for me?' and I'm thinking 'anything for you chris!' and he signed it for me and i was all WOW.

I sound like a wang... oh well... I was excited. It was fun.

Allanah's use of the word 'wang' is just ..daft? It makes no sense, in a stupid way.

Anyway, we got to talk to the guys after the Canberra show. It was a little awkward in moments, but the guys are too nice for that feeling to last. I was reluctant to get anything signed (so I didn't) because whenever they guys had a texta, they weren't making chatter, which I thought was sad. Scott's a funny guy :p. Andy almost seemed glad that he was getting a week off touring to do his tax, and Chris seemed pretty tired but related a story about a guy who only drank Strongbow. It was bloody cold, so we didn't stick around for long, though.

Allanah

I'm not daft I just use the word wang a lot. IS THAT SO WRONG? Where's the love and community spirit?

wizard_23
10-25-2006, 03:00 PM
Nothing with the use of wang. I use it daily. its a great one cos when said "wang" i reckon it means male reproductive tool. but when said "wangas" its perfect 4 boobs! so it has multiple meanings! and its jus a great multipurpose word. so anyone that knocks it is an out and out WANG!

At the most recent time i saw them, my little cousin asked me to get a poster signed from smash hits for her.
On the back was a Lee Harding poster.
We were all making fun of him, then Paul said "Well he likes you!" and told how Lee said in a interview that he wanted to write a song with Chris, and Chris said:
"Um... well i've met him, and i'm sure he's a nice guy and all.. i just don't have any time for him."

Hah.

They're the easiest bunch of guys to have a talk with. No attitude. Very welcoming and charming. :)

I do have a question: Since they're much bigger in Australia than they are in the US, is it harder to meet with them after a gig? Like, is there a huge crowd you have to make your way through?

The trick is to bug them on myspace for months, and have Rae go get them for you :p
Yeah, at the Palace gigs there was maybe 20 people around including a group of about 10 of us forum people. The first night we waited out the front with the tent, and we saw Rae come out the front of the venue then run back inside.. I was thinking.. nah.. but a few minutes later Rae and the guys came out and across the street to us. OH MY GOD THEY CAME TO US!?!!1/1/11 Yup. Oh man was that a good night *reminisces*

It doesn't matter how welcoming and charming people. I lack ALOT of self confidence and everyone here can rest assured a meet with the guys would be a successful one, if your name is not tina *shudders at crappy name*
Talking to people is hard for me 'cause im forever thinking of what they are thinking of me, i never want to make a bad impression so i keep quiet. Bad choice-shyness gets you nowhere. So as much as id love to meet TLE i'd be screwed...

You know, I used to be that way to when I was a teenager. I didn't break out of my shell until I was in college and I took Theatre Art/Drama classes. It *forces* you out of yourself, even if you're in character. :)

And I definitely think you have a chance at meeting TLE. I was a little nervous as well but you just stick your hand out there and introduce yourself.

I'm the same with not wanting to make a bad impression. Generally I'm not too bad but around people I highly respect I can't help but want to make the best impression I can. I can never think of anything worth saying though, so I usually stay quiet or just blurt out something stupid really quickly before I can stop myself.

I was always so paranoid of what people thought of me that i couldn't even go up to shop counters to pay for things cause i was so worried what the person behind the counter thought! Then as it turns out, the meds i was on for 6 yrs cause severe paranoia.

Yeah i got bullied tons in school and stuff so i've always been really self concious but the meds made it far worse. I still can't always go up to shop counters sometimes, but atleast i can walk through a shopping center and look up, instead of staring at my feet.

About tle.. the first time i met them i gave Chris a letter i wrote while in hospital and can't remember what i said. Everytime since then we have a chat and i give him a letter. I used to always worry that he hated me and i felt bad that i kinda turned him into my shrink, so worried that i couldn't listen to their music without wanting to bash my head on a wall. One day i ran into him at a hotel and i was already crying over something else, and i ended up blurting out "Listening to your music makes me want to bash my head against a wall now im so sorry about all the letters i don't mean to be annoying ect"
His reaction was "I like the letters.. stress less jess" then spent ages in the bar with me while i cried and spilled my heart out. The next day my friend said "Thanks for looking after Jess last night" and he said "I love Jess... i just wish she could comfortable around us."

So that kinda helped me stop thinking that he hates me.

I kept saying 'please' a lot and Chris kept telling me "you dont have to say please"

I saw them in November and I wanted to meet them sooo bad. We found their tour bus a few hours before the concert and I was so excited I thought I'd actually get to meet them. But, my dad was like, no we can't cos he doesn't wait around for that kind of stuff. It was a small gig though, only like 200 people. And I found out later that they showed up an hour after the concert to a crowd of about 10 people. Coulda hung around with them but NOOOO! But next time I'm gonna get a bunch of tickets for a bunch of shows and stand in the front row for each of them so I can meet them! I will meet them! Imma calm down a bit now. Seriously Chris did notice me, he played Uncle Harry cos I wouldn't shut up. Lol best night ever.

That's only natural Bec-Dawg! I've always been a pretty outgoing kid I think, and I do make a fool of myself often but I dunno, that's always gonna happen I s'pose.
First time I met them I was really tongue tied with Andy and Scotty and then I got up to Chris and relaxed straight away. Then the next two times all was rad. Particularly last time at the Palace. I met them first in 2005 - I organised with Rae to meet them at their soundcheck before their gig up here - it was O18's only and we barely see them at all so Rae helped out. I listened in on the soundcheck which was *awesome* and then chatted for a bit afterwards and got stuff signed etc.

Last year, they played here again, all ages but I organised to meet them again, this time with the son of someone from work - an 8 year old. We met them after and chatted for a bit and yeah!
