In the celebrity pics, Chris had this:

Chris Cheney from The Living End
Favourite Album: Stray Cats - Runaway Boys

Comments:
Yes its hard to pick one but Ive chosen 'Runaway Boys' by the Stray Cats.

Its not just my favorite album but one that has also greatly influenced me and my career. Prior to buying this album i was very interested in and listened to a lot of 50's rock n'roll. That was the first music i really fell in love with. I was obsessed with artists like Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, early Elvis and pretty much anyone who sounded like they meant it. I really dug the rawness of the performances and the rebellious nature of what they were doing. I think it may have been called the Devils Music.....COOL!!

In contrast to this, the other kind of music i liked was early 80's new wave probably because it was the music on the charts when i was a kid. I remember my older sister having records like '81 off the wall' and '1982 with a bullet' which were compilations of chart hits. kind of like todays So Fresh but better! I'm pretty sure this is where i first discovered the Stray Cats. Singles such as 'Rock This Town', 'Stray Cat Strut' and 'Runaway Boys' featured on these albums and i remember hearing them on the radio too. I think I first saw them on Saturday morning music shows where their Tattoos and peroxided quiff stood out from the rest of the bunch. As far as i was concerned a band not only had to sound great, they had to look the part as well.

Basically they had a sound that was rooted in 50's rock'n'roll with an Image that was a mixture of rockabilly, punk and new wave. I was hooked!! I was about 13 and just starting to buy my own records so i decided i would try and find one of their albums. I went to Brashes in Bourke street Melbourne and bought their debut album which was called Runaway Boys". This was before CD's when album covers really meant something so the first thing that knocked me out was the photo on the front. It was a simple photo of Three quiffed up punks armed only with a guitar, a snare drum and Double Bass standing in what looked like a back alley. They looked menacing and ready to rock. On the back was a collage of live photos, a tin of hair grease, a comb and a dirty ashtray along with some cool 50's type. And what the hell was with the song titles....'Fishnet stockings'??'Rumble in Brighton'?? 'Crawl up and die'?? "wild Saxaphone'?? I had a feeling it was going to be a fun listen if nothing else!

It also had the three singles that i'd heard on radio and TV etc. Its difficult to describe how i felt when i first played it but it changed my life, no doubt about it.. It had everything i loved about the fifties stuff but it sounded like it was being played by snotty punks who had way too much energy to burn . The Guitar sounded tough but twangy with the right amount of Sun records echo, the drums sounded live and exciting and the double bass sounded like a big wooden double bass. This sound is hard to achieve but the album was produced by Dave Edmunds who is a master at dialling in top vintage tones and updating them. From the first song until the last it doesnt let up and every song is a winner.

Its quite a diverse album and the high level of musicianship set them apart from all the other rockabilly bands then and now even. From the new wave descending bassline of "Runaway Boys", the Ska tinged "ubangi stomp", fast paced rockers like "double talkin' baby", political punk of "storm the embassy" to the cool jazz pop of "stray cat strut" this album has it all.

The band sound as though they have a point to prove and the musicianship is amazing...particularly the guitar playing. I read somewhere that 'Double Talkin' Baby' was recorded live in the studio, guitar solos and all and it captures perfectly a band that had the correct mix of energy and classy playing Brian Setzers playing in particular encompasses all of the great guitar styles whether it be fingerpicking, jazz lines, country bends and just straight up balls to the wall rock'n'roll.

I also think hes an underrated singer and on songs such as 'Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie' and 'Rumble In Brighton' he has a growl that would have given even the mighty Bon Scott a run for his money. I spent hours learning all the guitar licks and it became such an important album to Scott and I that when it came time to name our little suburban garage band , there really wasnt any decision to be made. From the end of high school until 1995 we were called The Runaway Boys. In hindsight not the most original name but you gotta start somewhere.

I think we always knew we would change it at some point but for the time being it was in homage to our heroes and considering we covered most of this album, it kinda worked. I was lucky enough to see them in 1990 at the Palace and i got the album signed by all three members and I count it as one of my most prized possessions.

That's not the point of it. The terms and conditions clearly state that that sort of behaviour will be weeded out, anyway. Don't be a jerk about it.

May
09-20-2006, 11:21 PM
That's a good idea Andre.

I too voted for S/T.

We've just gotta be careful that the judges dont deem it to be rigged, cos that would rule TLE out of the running... and we dont want that!

But given the amount of time S/T spent in the charts, and all the accolades it received, S/T seems like a good choice to vote TLE in with! :)

I wasn't planning to be a jerk about it. And i didn't actually realise that that was a rule.

Anyway - with my other email i voted for ST by TLE.

It'd be great to get The Living End up there, but only if it wins legitimately. Dunno where I got these old-fashioned values of fairness from, but if there's going to be a legitimate poll done it'll be by the ABC. Keep the vote spamming for everything else that's on commercial TV.

and although Andre's lame attempt at subliminal messages was NOT the reason...

i voted for The Living End, The Living End...

reason: this album changed my life and my listening habbits, it's taken me through so many momentus points in my life and the world would be a sadder place without it!

because it sounded wanky enough to get away with... and it's true!

Ha! Not touching that one!

And I agree with your other comment. In the past we have had polls and such that show quite a divide between those who prefer ST and those who prefer Roll On. Generally one group can't understand why the other feels that way, and they have a strong connection with their favourite. And i think most people presumed that those that heard ST first, loved it more than Roll On, and those who were introduced to the band via Roll On liked that better...but it proved to not always be the case, although I think for the mst part it probably was.

that is my assumption too - it often happens with other artist that i've liked, whatever i hear first i like best... same goes with cover versions of songs (generally) whatever you hear first you like most...

it kinda stems from where you're at when you first connect with the album/artist/song

i'm not feeling very articulate otherwise i'd write down more on the subject but yeah - it's a little off topic so i might stop now...

i'm going to make my parents vote for their favourite album - they'll probably want something John Denver or the Beatles... hehe!

interesting...

Tell her to vote for S/T. I'm makin my family listen to it non-stop from now so they vote for it. I just love it so much. So many great songs and unforgettables on it. And most of my fav TLE songs are on it, eg. Prisoner Of Society, Monday, Second Solution, West End Riot. Those would all be in my top 7/8 TLE songs and that is why i lurve the album so much. Ant is is so upbeat and rocky which hooks the listener from first hearing.

Evil Chris

Exactly. Modern ARTillery is Pretty Damn Good. It's even got my favourite TLE song (End Of The World). But they could have improved. With songs like Jimmy. I didnt really like that. And So What that song was also pretty ordinary. But compared to most Bands. The Living End Seem To release new albums very quickly. That might explain modern artillery.

I love So What.

I love MA. It was my favourite album for a long time.

I don't know. It's hard..

I like SOE, but it hasn't grabbed me like the previous albums. I'm not sure why. I love all of MA except the first 3 songs. I love all of RO except for 2 songs in the middle. I love all of ST.

So it may seem odd that I don't pick out ST as my favourite right up. But I don't because, although there are some songs I may not like as much on MA and RO, the songs that I do like are...

Stuff it.

I have no idea. I can't pick.

I absolutely love the second half of Roll On though. Dirty Man through to Astoria Paranoia. Man, that's beautiful music.

Yay, Radiohead were number 3, I voted for OK Computer. They had two other albums in there also. That was a good top 5.

EDIT: Oh, and Crowded House had two albums!

I was suprised American Idiot was only 72. I was expecting it to be much higher because of its popularity.

the album sux anyway. I guess the typical green day "fan" saw their older music and believed that was so much better.

I picked 4 of the top 10, didnt think Floyd would be at number 1 (but Im happy because I fkn LOVE that album) but definately top 10. Really really stoked to see TLE at 45 and You Am I at 50.

American Idiot is pure genius anyway.. I don't see how any one can find anything wrong with it unless they're trying to be a showoff "hardcore old school" fan.

Well done to TLE, and well done to Missy Higgins and the other great aussie artists that got a mention up the top!

no, I just think it sucks. A couple of songs were pretty good though.

Justify your reason for disliking it.

Personally I think it's crap that Wolfmother got in there 'cause imo one of the true tests of a good album is how it stands up over time. Look at Jet, if this poll was done two years ago, Get Born would have been in it. If this was to be done in two years time, I doubt Wolfmother would be in it.

Agreed

I'm glad to see Absolution and Songs For The Deaf in there, even if QOTSA only made it in at 97

I was glad to see The Whitlams come in at 27 with Eternal Nightcap, significantly higher than I expected, and R.E.M at 58, and the Oils 23, although I expected to see Diesel and Dust in there somewhere.

For the most part it's a pretty accurate poll. It's just 2 or 3 contemporary albums would dissappear in a few years time, but the bulk of it would stay the same. There are some absolute classics in there! And that's what makes TLE's position so good....That album is 8 years old...so it's not just in there because there are a bunch of groupies on board for today. Although that may have helped! ;o)
