"white noise" wasn't what i was expecting...but it doesn't really matter. it could be "lollipops in candyland" and i'd still love it, but i think by going with a more mysterious title, they're trying to reach a different base. which is always solid, i think they need to expand their fan base a little.

haha, I'm a little scared myself! I know i'll love it regardless, but to what degree...?
I still maintain that too much emphasis is put on recording/production of their albums. For me I can listen to Roll On and MA pretty much non-stop, but SOE is one of those albums that feels almost like a chore to listen to, rather then something i look forward to hearing again. Sure they may have put down SOE just how they wanted it, but I personally think the songs on Roll On and MA are superior - although in saying all that SOE isn't a bad album at all. But as long as they're happy with it that's all that matters :)

Can't help thinking after watching Silverchair's cover of I don't Wanna be the one at the Aria Hall of Fame - the introduction of Bono where he says 'Maintain your rage'. Maybe that would have been a better title for the new album, but then they know better than me.
I thought lyrically Modern Artillery was better than SOE, production better on SOE than MA, but you just wish Chris would write something along the lines of All Torn Down, Second Solution - something with a proper message or a prophecy of the times ahead.

You may all be missing a reference here - to Stiff Little Fingers 'White Noise'.
If you don't know SLF you'll find a lot of similarities between TLE and SLF's poppier sides. Save the Day and Who's Gonna Save Us are very SLF.
There aren't many vids of 'White Noise', but here's one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k18kHNUw0b8
It was very controversial for about five minutes in the late 70's when some newspapers tried to expose it as racist. It is of course anti-racist.
Dunno about it as a title - suggests we are going to get alot of feedback in the mix. It sounds a bit old hat too.
Why not just call it 'Raise the Alarm'?

since when, may I ask, have you ever - and I expect you to be honest here- walked into a music store and bought an album based purely on the album title? I have never ever done that.
The album title itself is not something that generates many if any sales. It's certainly something that an album is remembered for later on- whether for good or bad or merely for distinguishing it from other albums by the same artist.
It's the music that generates sales, whether through radio/TV play, advertising, touring, through the bands reputation, or through other promotion- the album title just doesn't come into consideration.

I was basing that on its success in the charts etc. not as a single opinion.

I've increasingly believed that the social commentary and politics in Chris Cheney's lyrics, and the sound of the TLE in rock mode is similar to that of the Manics Street Preachers, except Nicky Wire (Jones) references people like Jung, CAmus, Chomsky, and their album titles are often a statement of what they want the record to evoke as a message - Send Away the Tigers - great reference to something Tony Hancock would say when he was unhappy with his writers and delved deeper into his alcoholism.
All the song titles previously touted as being on the album could easily be an album title IMHO, but it's nice when an album title is catchy and has an interesting meaning e.g. Woodface

White Noise? It's not from a movie, it's an actual type of sound. Sciency and all that
yay wiki link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_noise)
White noise is a random signal (or process) with a flat power spectral density. In other words, the signal's power spectral density has equal power in any band, at any centre frequency, having a given bandwidth. White noise is considered analogous to white light which contains all frequencies
Plot to White noise (the movie 2005)
The title 'White Noise' refers to the phenomenon known as Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). People believe that you can hear voices of the dead in the white noise of a detuned radio and even see faces from the white noise on the television set... .
There are also cd's called white noise that are relaxation tapes and a band called white noise so while title is not what you would expect its certainly not uncommon. This could turn out to be a problem when people start looking for it

We like the "White noise" as title of TLE album. Why not? It's little bit misterious and we sure have meaning like it always be. We wait for new title and new ard design of new album booklet because TLE always was super in it! We believe that this time it also will be oh high level.
And also we agree with all who said that music is more important then title and all stuff, but like artists we think that image, style and messages in title and design of CD is very important and influential !

Someone's created and updated the wikipedia entry for White Noise, but it was a total shocker in the spelling and grammar department, so I fixed it up, and added a few of the songs from the Longnecks tour that the person left off. I wonder if TLE wrote any completely unheard songs (eg. not played on the Longnecks tour) that'll make the album?

Nice to hear from you Rae. Look forwarding to hearing some radio tracks!
All good news - only wish i could get to Sydney for the show.
Anyway, very much looking forward to new songs on the radio, July 19th and all the excitement that is a new TLE album :D
Rae, it only seems like yesterday you were on here telling us how good the SOE songs were :p
And MA...and RO... :p

I've just heard the first single. My first thought was that this is the closest to the live sound they've ever captured in the studio.
But you'll make up your own minds. No point me telling you I'm DAMN excited cause it sounds AMAZING. Brendan O'Brien is a God. John Agnello is a God.

From the sounds of it the new album will be very 'riffy'. I would quite like to see a few heavy-ish rock songs, as i'm not much of a fan of 'poppy' songs. Not sure if thats going to happen or not though. ;)

I'm kinda scared to be honest! all this talk about heavy riffs and shredding its making me nervous :p TLE don't seem the type of band for that but if they can do it and do it well, I'll be one little happy vegemite :D

Psh, that tracklisting doesn't mean anything, remember Wikipedia is edited by people like you and me, who only know what's been discussed on the forum, they might not even be called that anymore. And I do agree that there are better songs than How Do We Know. I WANT LOADED GUNNNNNNNNnnnnnn
Shadow
05-18-2008, 12:09 AM
How Do We Know? as first single? Ouch... I don't think it has the "energy" to be a single, let alone the first one. It's a good song, don't get me wrong - but if Raise The Alarm isn't the first single, I'll totally give you all my star wars guys. Except Boba.
I'd like to see Loaded Gun up for consideration as a single at some point.
Deadcat Kaye
05-18-2008, 12:31 AM
Lyrically...Raise The Alarm has the potential of being one damn good Single...but then again, so does How Do We Know...but then again, again, so does New Frontier and well...Most of the other songs heard on TLN tour...
Adele
05-18-2008, 12:46 AM
New Frontier or Faith would be my picks but are not necessarily be the best representation of the album as a whole... which is what they're probably trying to aim for.
I only suspect How Do We Know to be the first single because it was Chris' favorite during the TLN tour. Things change though so who knows.
strahanie
05-18-2008, 01:34 AM
I think New Frontier was the only song where i zoned out a bit, didnt grab me as a single. Raise the Alarm was very catchy, easy chorus bits to sing along with even if you dont know it. I loved Disbeliever, but don't know that lyrics are single material, could be alienating for some.
White noise I can live with, tho the Hobeken Happiness suggestion is sweet, dont know that it sounds very TLEish
To those grumbling "Hey hey disbeliever you're bleeding me dry, come on now listen to reason, and everthing will be fine" ;)
WhitefalconTLE44
05-18-2008, 01:39 AM
The only reason i don't want Raise the Alarm or How do we Know as the first single is because i want to hear another song in good quality really soon, and i already have those songs from when they were played back in december(?)

ok so scanning isn't going to work, so i'll type it for youse:
BEGINNING OF A NEW 'END: The Living End finds a new groove in Jersey.
Currently wrapping up a fast and furious four-week pre-production and recording stint in New Jersey, Melbourne's favorite sons, The Living End, are feeling the pressure.
"We've set ourselves a goal to get it done in less time than usual and we plan on sticking with it!" TLE's Chris Cheney told BLUNT just prior to the sessions kicking off. "We feel it's enough time for the type of record we want this to be. We've done a lot of work on these songs and they should be bloody great so we're just itching to get in there, press record and play then really fucking loud!"
Recording straight-to-tape at Water Music Studio's, Hoboken, New Jersey with producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady, Dinosaur Jr.), trio are determined to make their fifth full-lenght effort nothing short of an Oz rock classic.
"A lot of the songs have a depth and weight to them that people haven't necessarily heard from us before," claims Cheney ominously.
The new direction is indeed heavy, with an emphasis on killer grooves and some of the most raw, passionate vocals ever laid down by the band. Containing token Living End single fodder such as "White Noise", the rest of the album sees the band stepping out of their comfort zone, incorporating elements of soul, boogie, Oz rock and dub-reggae into their signature sound.
Among the stand-out working titles heard by BLUNT were the astonishing hard boogie stomp "how Do We Know"; the dark and funkified "Beware The Moon"; the laidback dub jam "Sum Of Us"; and the gnarly Oz rock bellringer "make The Call.
Cheney said: "The songs sound really huge. I wouldn't say heavy metal as such, although there are definately a bunch of metal licks and influences in there. There's more of a '70s hard rockelement but I think you really need to hear it to understand it properly."
The Living End are remaining tight-lipped as to the title of the new record - " It won't be called Number 5 Is Alive," quipped Cheney - which is scheduled for release as early as mid-July through the band's new label Dew Process/Universal.
Matt Reekie
I'll try scanning again soon.

This may be a stretch, but considering the cited former works of the producer they're using for this one (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) and those bands penchant for sonic exploration and feedback-laden "noise rock", maybe a title like White Noise means TLE got a bit fuzzy and experimental on this one? Noise rock or "shoegaze" is my favorite genre, if I had to pick one, but it never seemed like something TLE would gravitate towards...a bit of dabbling could suit them quite well, though, me thinks.

Chris has said in an interview (earlier this year) that shoegazing bands aren't his thing and that he wouldn't go and see one live.
So I doubt that he'd make a new album in that genre and call it their best so far!

When it comes on nova, jump on the website and it will tell you when they're gonna play it again.

Gah, haven't heard White Noise yet either.
Been listening to Triple J and they've had HDWK on a few times so far- great to hear the guys getting alot of air time.

Is there anywhere I can listen to the single here in England? Do the radio stations have online 'listen again' where I could skip to the right time to listen?
I want to hear this!
