View Full Version : Omfg, Where Is The Other Dollar!?
3 MEN GO INTO A MOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID THE ROOM IS $30, SO
EACH MAN PAID $10 AND WENT TO THE ROOM.
A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE ROOM WAS ONLY $25, SO
HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH $5.
ON THE WAY, THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT $5 EVENLY
BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A $1 AND KEPT THE OTHER $2 FOR
HIMSELF.
THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL OF
$27, ADD THE $2 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = $29.
WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

this is just no fun when you can't cheat yourself and look at the answer.

I figured it out.
Think about how you would solve the problem yourself to start with. Don't just follow along cos it looks like it makes sense.
im pretty sure my reasoning is correct. Perhaps I am just not explaining it right.

I know a few people who have figured it out, and one of them once told me, but then I forgot it a week or so later :p

yeah, thats right Kylie!
hooray! I might edit it so others can work it out for themselves
I don't get why the last sentance makes sense though! no wonder I failed maths haha
Im a maths retard and i think it has more to do with thinking and questioning stuff than maths.

OH WAIT!! I'm pretty sure I know the answer! :p
I am thinking of a similar riddle that dad had emailed me once. I had to ask him to make sure I was thinking of the right one though! :p

This is how a mathematical scam artist managed to commit a huge amount of fraud. He tricked people into this exact scenario to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars. The answer is that you simply cannot use different math equasion's for one problem. You must deal with each person seperately with seperate money otherwise the maths don't work.

Sigh. This riddle has been posted on the forum before. And even when the answer was explained, PEOPLE STILL INSISTED THAT IT DIDN'T WORK which resulted in me getting very annoyed and frustrated. So perhaps I shall stay clear of this.

haha, i seem to remember that. The answers were put up (a couple of times on every page) and people still said it was all wrong...forgot it was this question though!
i seem to remember being very frustrated with this whole forum for not actually reading any posts before posting, fun times :p
Woah, I don't remember it being posted here before. I'm in a riddling mood now though.

Still don't have a clue. :p
Start at the beginning and ignore what it says at the end. Its mostly there to throw you off.

is that similar to the one:
Charles and Margaret are found dead on the floor surrounded by water and broken glass, how did they die?

You got a 5 litre Jug and a 3 litre Jug...how do you fill the 5 litre just upto EXACTLY 4 litres using only the jugs to measure. Nothing more??? :)
Caity

Quite easily.
Colezy
07-06-2008, 11:00 PM
First up, you can't fill the 5 litre to 3 litre's, you need to empty it to 3 :p
You'd just tip some out of the 5 into the 3 until they're even : )

ok i figured it out
and i didnt look at anyone elses
fill up the 5 litre
pour the water into the 3 litre so u have 3 litres in the 3 litre and 2 in the 5 litre jugs
pour out the water from the 3 litre jug and then pour the 2 litres of water from the 5 litre jug into the 3 litre jug
you then fill up the 5 litre jug and pour water into the 3 litre jug untill its full
u will now have 4 litres in the 5 litre jug
wow complicated explanation
but i hope i got it right...
