I hired Garden State a few backs and wow, what a movie. You have to check it out. Zach Braff wrote and directed it. It's about Andrew Largeman who goes back to his hometown after his Mum died. He hasn't been there since he was a kid and I won't say much more, just go get your hands on it!
I've got it. Haven't watched it yet.

I liked all the parts of 'Garden State' where Natalie Portman wasn't in it or when she wasn't part of the conversation. her character was sooooo irritating.
did 'Little Miss Sunshine' come out in Australia? (think family, roadtrip, yellow VW van)
I saw it in the theater and it was amazing.
Julian

Aww, I liked her character. I usually hate her but I loved her in Garden State
I don't think it has came out in Aus yet Steph. Could be wrong though.

I liked Garden State. This may be because I'm in love with Zach Braff but I don't know haha. And yeah, Natalie Portman's character can be annoying but it's in a really likeable way I think.
And I think Little Miss Sunshine is coming out here really soon, Greg Kinnear was on Rove last night doing an interview and promoting it.
I watched Garden State once when it first came out but can hardly remember it except that there was lots of swearing in it, haha. I might rent it again and watch it.
One of my favourite movies which I havn't watched in a while is Donnie Darko. Anyone else like it?
mel_bound
10-04-2006, 06:43 PM
yeah Donny Darko is pretty awesome, I wanna see it again.
My fave movie is Tank Girl.. anyone else a fan?

garden state was great
braffs newie the last kiss is out soon should be awesome
little miss sunshine is out soon, very much looking forward to it
i haven't seen donny darko, but i know that in a top 10 countdown the ABC had last year, it was like, 7 or 8. tim minchin wrote a song outlining the plot. i haven't heard it since :(
'twas very funny :(
I thought Natalie Portman's character was quite good in 'Garden State', her instability and quirkiness contrasted to Braff's medication-controlled life. Yeah, I'm getting into the analysing skills :p
I recently saw 'The Notebook', with Gena Rowlands and James Garner. To date, the only movie to bring me to tears. I'm not usually a soppy romantic movie person, but this was just fantastic, and very very well told. Highly recommended.

Speaking of Aussie movies, can't wait for BoyTown, looks good. I liked Garden State, really enjoyed the soundtrack too, in an 'indie' way. Last good movie I saw was Thank You For Smoking, especially loved Aaron Eckhart and Rob Lowe in it. And Adam Brody playing a variation on the Seth Cohen character.

I'm a huge Bob Franklin fan, and i love Wayne Hope's work too...so it should be awesome!
At the moment my favourite is Dazed & Confused, great movie about high school in the 70s. My favourite movie always changes though.

I can't wait for Kenny. And for the Borat movie. Trashy Comedy, yum yum.
What do you guys think of 'Napoleon Dynamite' ?
After hearing some friends going on about it, I spotted it in my brother's extensive DVD collection and sat down with a pizza to watch it. A few funnies, an annoying lead actor and altogether a bit yawnsome... Why the cult following?
Neryssah
10-06-2006, 09:01 AM
I like it, it's just nowhere near as good as everyone makes it out to be.
Steph Format
10-06-2006, 11:52 AM
the fact that I heard practically the entire thing quoted by my high school really put a damper on Napoleon Dynamite. it IS something different, but ugh. Mormons are still not funny.
...there's a Borat movie? oh boy.

Yes there is. Those of you who remember how the Kazakhstanies got all shitty about Borat on Da Ali G show....well they're REALLY shitty now that there's gonna be 2 hours of him!

I don't know why this thread isn't used more.
I'm home sick with nothing to do, someone reccommend me some movies?
Black Snake Moan - Ignore the fact that Justin Timberlake is in it, Samuel L Jackson is amazing in it, as is Christina Ricci. Kinda dark, and an unconventional sotry, but done well.
Prozac Nation - Christina Ricci is simply amazing in this. Again, a bit dark, but still beautiful.
Pirates of the Caribbean - for obvious reasons
The Ex - Zach Braff, about to be a father, paranoid his girl is having an affair. I watched it just on the plane over, it's pretty good i think.

I've watched a lot of movies lately that I really enjoyed and a lot that I thought would be awsome but just didn't do it for me.
(keep in mind I generally watch mainstream crap :p )
The Good:
Shooter - well, cos there is shooting, and possibly because I have an obsession with Entourage and everything related. I quite like movies about Governments doing dodgy stuff.
Road Hogs - haha, another lame boy movie i know! it started off a bit slow, but thought it was really funny by the end. Extra nice suprise was Ray Liotta :) Guys having a mid-life crisis adventure isn't that original, but they were funny guys so it wasn't too bad!
Lost in translation. I loved it being based in Japan. I loved Scarlett Johansson and especially Bill Murray in this movie. I missed the first half an hour of it though, so that made it kind of tricky to watch to start with. Even still I thought it was great. The sort of movie that gets you thinking about you past and present relationships, well for me anyway.
Children of Men - LOVED this movie, great story and I love Julianne Moore. People had become infertile and nobody knew why. The world became pretty fucked up. Then one girl became pregnant and she was the only hope of survival...it was very cool.
The Bad:
Marie Antoinette - I loved a lot of things about this movie - soundtrack, Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, and the style of this movie - but overall I thought it lacked something. Without sounding too wanky, I didn't feel drawn into the story at all and I found the first half of the film very tedious...of course I was royally wasted when I watched it, so it may have had something to do with that :p

I finally saw Smokin' Aces last night, SO GOOD. Hot Fuzz too, but it wasn't as good as people made it out to be.
Has anyone seen Superbad?

Isnt that Wild Hogs?????
I wasn't impressed with Children of Men - it was too similar to Chronicles of Narnia, blatantly religious.
Smokin' Aces was amzing. The best entrance ever with the smoking lift!

Yes!! Those brothers creeped me out. I liked the one who talked though.
Has anyone seen Superbad?
Yeah. Its pretty fricken funny.
I saw the Bourne Ultimatum last night. Pretty good. I haven't seen the other movies in that series yet.
Die Hard 4.0 I've seen a couple of times now. That is quite good. You know if a movie is good if I've seen it more than once at the cinemas.
I've seen Transformers 5 times at the cinemas now I enjoyed it that much.

i've seen The Bourne Ultimatum at the cinemas twice now, 1st time me & my sister felt sick the whole way through due to the shaky camera work (was gonna blame it on dodgey pop corn!).
Best advice is to sit at the back of the cinema, it was an awesome movie when i got to actually enjoy it 2nd time around! :)

Saw that a couple of nights ago, it was very hard to watch...i was thinking i needed new glasses, my poor eyes couldn't keep up!
watching Say Anything at the moment. Easily my favourite movie, it's so sweet :)
I went DVD shopping nuts over the past few days. Got them all cheap as chips though which makes my bank account sort of like me.
I got:
Sin City
Pulp Fiction
Taxi Driver
Casino
Scarface
Carlito's Way
The Libertine
Imagine
The Untouchables
Has anybody seen The Worlds Fastest Indian? Probably one of my favourite feel good movies ever.

I don't know why but that just reminded me of this movie I'm looking for, it's a war movie, and there are all these American soldiers, and one of them pulls a grenade pin and sits on it and he's just yelling out "I BLEW MY FUCKING BUTT OFF!" and does anyone know what it is?
And I've been trying to think of what it is for ages and I can't.

So I saw Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels today. It's pretty friggin' cool. Made me want to go to London and get a dodgy accent and use bad rhyming slang and play lots of poker.
Also The Number 23, I really liked it, but apparently nobody else does :(
Sarah

Number 23...not from what i've seen at work, it's very popular!
I really should start watching more movies now thats my job an all :p
Neryssah
09-24-2007, 09:30 PM
That would be an awesome job. Just out of curiosity, do people who look stupid/annoying get out bad movies?
Sarah
09-24-2007, 09:49 PM
not necessarily.
you can tell the anime people a mile off, and of course the porn people are easy to spot as well.
whats really funny is my sister got me a crappy $2 dvd for xmas as a joke. In my first week I have had 3 seperate people hire out the same dvd, very funny :)
Neryssah
09-24-2007, 09:55 PM
Ohhh, funny porn dvd story. Well not really funny so much as gross, but anyway. A friend of mine used to work in a video store and someone brought back a porno and it had... "stuff" on it.
Then the same friend bought a mobile and it was broken so she sent it off to get fixed, and when it came back it was loaded with porn.
Poor girl was traumatised.
Sarah
09-24-2007, 10:02 PM
ewww! some people are just sickos! i don't think we should be allowed to rent it out, sometimes its just a bit icky...
Neryssah
09-24-2007, 10:04 PM
What's really dodgy is when in some video stores the adult section is right next to, say, the music section, so you're standing there having a look at the music dvds and all the people walking past are glaring at you and then you realise how suss it looks :p
Sarah
09-24-2007, 10:10 PM

I haven't seen Hairspray yet... I'm a bit reluctant.
I've got the original at home, but it's nothing to write home about. But the new movie is a musical, or so I've heard, which the original is not. So I'm semi-tempted to go see it, because I am a terrible, terrible person that just loves musicals. I'm not even kidding.

My mum is one of the stupid-dvd getting people. It's not necessarily because she is stupid, she doesn't know anything about movies. So she just kind of wanders around the video store looking for something that might sound like it interests her. Then she gets home and watches it and is dissapointed.
And I really liked hairspray, but yeah, im another horrible person who loves musicals and all things homosexual.

Canada isn't like, Saudi Arabia or something.
Speaking of Canada, I really have no idea how to identify a Canadian accent. I guess theres just so many American accents that I just can't tell a Canadian accent from an American one. I know there's the stereotypical "aboot" and "eh" but beyond that, I just cant tell!
I know im about 2 years too late, but my god brokeback mountain is a boring movie.

I saw 'I Am Legend' last night.
Quite enjoyed the movie. My date jumped a fair few times and some guy in the theatre popped a bag or something when it went really quiet at we were waiting for something to jump out.
Classic. His partner gave him a good smack over the head.

Yeah, Juno looks pretty cool. I think I love Michael Cera.
I met Michael Cera at the melbourne Superbad premiere, and the guy next me says to him "This chick is in love with you" (he plays George Michael in my favourite tv show ever of all time in the whole universe, Arrested Development). Suffice to say, it was really embarassing.
I watched Across The Universe and I love this movie! I think I am in love with the actor who plays Jude. The sequence and the use of I Want You (She's So Heavy) was really, really good. Wasn't expecting Bono or Salma Hayek to pop into the film either.
I saw a movie called The Jane Austen Book Club which I really liked. I actually kind of want to read her books now. I think I tried reading Sense and Sensibility once and I didn't like it. Also, Death Proof is pretty good as well. Kurt Russell is cool!

You have to read Pride and Prejudice and then watch the BBC version. Or do it the other way round if you wish.
I ran out of Jane Austen to read so i'm reading a choose your own adventure style book written by someone or other. There is so much fan-fiction style stuff that has actually been published. Its crazy.
I feel a bit weird about having a crush on Michael Cera because he's pretty young. I feel weird about liking anyone younger than my sister.

I hope to see it this weekend.
Lu went and saw it yesterday (I opted to see Atonement again), and she said it was really good. Little bit gory in places.
But the thing that she really liked was hearing Mr Depp sing. Having watched Cry Baby like a zillion times, she was used to James Invelts voice, so to hear Johnnys actually singing voice was 'cool'.
I saw it tonight and I reckon it was awesome. The only other showing of the story I've seen was a school play, so this beat it hands down. The singing, the costumes, and the story was adapted (and extended) fantastically. Really recommend it.

Here's some trivia. In Cry Baby, Johnny Depp does actually sing once in the film. It's when they're in the car singing along to the radio (before they reach Allison's car and start singing "Gee" by The Crows. :)
I just went and saw American Gangster. It's good, pretty intense though.

Gah, we were supposed to read that in year 12. I didn't read it though, but I wrote on it so I know how the story goes and stuff. Really not my type of thing, but most other people I know really liked it.
I recently bought Beyond The Sea on dvd. It's the story of Bobby Darin featuring Kevin Spacey as director, co-writer, co-producer and acting as Bobby Darin himself. It's kind of a non-traditional biopic. I enjoyed it.

The Kite Runner is about a well-off Afgan boy and his servant's son, who is of a different ethnic group (Hazara). I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't read it and want to, but he basically betrays him, and then later flees to America when the Taliban come into power.
Despite all the rage reviews about it, I don't think it's as amazing as people have said, but I did really enjoy reading it, it's quite well written and the story is beautiful. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet - it's not overly political, it's more personal.

Don't highlight or quote this if you don't want to know what happens:
At the end, there is a standoff between Smith and the Alpha male. Smith gives the antidote to the Alpha Male and they all disappear. Smith, the girl and her son go to Virginia to the refoooge camp. Also there is a love scene between Smith and the Girl somewhere in there too.

i have them but havent gotten round to watching them :p
I like french movies! I tend to watch them on tv if they're on. I haven't seen many but my favourite is 8 femmes (8 women). It's soooo bizarre. Watch it!
Seen Irréversible? It's a similar idea to Memento, but executed much more successfully. Plus a bit of Monia Bellucci naked doesn't go astray.

Never heard of the other ones, only watched it cos my mate brought it over and I was surprised that it ended up being pretty good.

I watched Hard Candy again today, it's nowhere near as disturbing the second time around haha.

I just bought the soundtrack to this just before.
Haven't seen the movie though.

I made friends with some french people a few nights ago, and I mentioned this movie to them last night and the guy reckons it's good but intense (ie 15 minute rape scene??). I'll give it a squizz. Would they have it at your average blockbuster/video store...?

Yep Yep. I've pre-ordered teh Blu-Ray version through ezydvd. The controversial ending should be good.
Don't highlight or quote this if you don't want to know what happens:
At the end, there is a standoff between Smith and the Alpha male. Smith gives the antidote to the Alpha Male and they all disappear. Smith, the girl and her son go to Virginia to the refoooge camp. Also there is a love scene between Smith and the Girl somewhere in there too.
hehehe I love a challenge. However this doesnt sound controversial it sounds a bit lame. I think I will stick with the ending I saw

Nothing that interesting out at the moment. I thought Run Fatboy Run was ok.

Yeah there's a pretty brutal rape scene. But if you can handle all the shock-violence in movies these days, then it's pretty standard along those lines. I haven't been to a blockbuster or anything for 10 years or something, so not a clue.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that for rent at either video ezy or video city..don't know about blockbuster cos i don't go there at all.
I only know that i've seen it at one of them cos my friend pointed it out one day and told me about it.
