Oh Lauren I love that guitar by the way!
I love the leopard print case. A bit pointless but oh so awesome!

Scotty quite possibly has one of them. I know he uses King Double Basses, but I'm not sure exactly what model, he can probably afford better than a slap king, though apparantly the slap kings are pretty good so he might not want to, I wouldn't have a clue.
I dunno I'm no expert with double basses, but I've heard good things about Slap Kings. All I know is his glow in the dark double bass is so damn sexy!

haha I saw a guitar that had glow in the dark machine heads today. Looked very tacky though. Scott's double bass is rad though. I remember at the first gig Bec I looked at you, pointed at scotty's bass and went "look!" haha

I can play a bit of double bass (while we're here) as i use the school ones to try. I've learned a few riffs adapted from the guitar. My friends also taught me how to hold it and play it. I tell you. It's really different to a violin (even if they look similar).

I've played violin for 8 years now, and when I started learning double bass, I freaked - it's crazy! It might have had something to do with the fact it was the wrong size bass (I should be using a half size, I was using a full size :p so I was swamped by it!) but the finger positionings are completely different - you don't use your second finger as much as you do with violin so that confused the hell outta me.

Anyway.

Yeah...what i noticed is that on violin, a semitone is usually the width of a finger but a semitone on the double bass is like 3 or 4 fingers.

Caity
09-28-2006, 09:37 PM
Another true point - you have to stretch forever just to get to the next note.
Easily explained - just the lengths of the strings etc.
But when you have little fingers like me, it makes it difficult!

hillaas

Wow you were playing a full size double bass Caity?
Those things are giant! I play a 3/4 size.
That's weird that for violins it's only a fingerwidth for a semitone. Well I guess it's not really that weird but it seems so cramped!

Ooh what are you dressing up as Ally? Or is it a surprise?

You can buy gloves like that at Dangerfield. I bought myself a pair of leopard print leggings to wear with them but they're too small and only come in one size, so I'm planning to make a trip to Dangerfield on Sunday to return them. Andre:
Yep, I played Molly on the Shore - got an A for the performance too, which I thought was awesome considering I'd had a fight with the violist and cellist five minutes before and was still in tears :p

Bec:
Yep, 4/4 was HUMOUNGUS :p I only play a 7/8 violin anyway - my arms/fingers are quite little so I don't even warrant a full size violin hahaha so the full size bass just swamped me - I could barely reach the top of the fingerboard!
And yeah - it's not cramped, it just makes it a *little* difficult when trying to place the notes at a fast speed - it's really easy to mistake the notes :p

I've never actually seen a full size double bass but from photos and stuff they look pretty big. I have tiny hands too, it's a bit annoying but I'm used to it.
Once when the double basses at my school were all taken for some orchestra performancey thingo I had to use a double bass that apparantly wasn't any particular size, but was smaller than a half size. It was really strange and really really light.
That was a pretty pointless story.
Do you still play double bass Caity?

Caity
09-28-2006, 10:09 PM
Nah - I gave up :p It confused me, switching between violin and double bass :p
You might have had a 1/8 size? Stringed instruments such as violins, basses etc go up in 1/8th sizes as well - hence mine is 7/8 etc. Perhaps ?

hillaas
09-28-2006, 10:12 PM
They have 1/16 size violins. They look like toys cos they are so small!

Caity - did you play Molly on the Shore?

Bec
09-28-2006, 10:13 PM
Aww that's a shame, double bass is awesome!
I think my teacher said it was between a 1/4 and 1/2 size, but it wasnt 1/3. It had a really long endpin so it ended up being normal height anyway, but the strings were all close together and it was strange
A 1/8 size bass would be pretty close to a cello wouldn't it?

hillaas
09-28-2006, 10:15 PM
Depends on the size of a cello. But an 1/8 size would be small. Your best bet is to go and ask the guys in teh show what size you are.

Sorry I ask a lot of questionsIt's fine. I remember a lot of arguing about this on the old forum. Some are better than others. I don't do them seriously, so for me doesn't take too long and is worth the effort (especially since I waste so much time online anyway). The best survey sites in my opinion are:
- Pureprofile
- YourVoice

and a couple of others that offer points/money now. Some just give you entries intoa draw for money. I won $200 in one once, but for the effort required, I'd stick with the ones mentioned above. I'll send you emails for all the ones I can refer people to.

My mum used to be registered to one of those things, emailcash I think it was. Whenever I went to do one on her account and I said I was under the age of 18, they would say something like "Thank you for your time", even though I only put in a few details about myself, not an actually survey.

I bought myself a red tshirt after trying on so many different ones, some gummi bears and a whopper and an ice tea for dinner.
We were walking through Knox when I spotted a sign on the window at Dusk, advertising for junior casuals over the Christmas period. I spoke to the girl and she was really nice, I'm taking my resume in there tomorrow morning. SCORE!

1x show ticket
1x metcard
1x potato cake
1x overpriced orange-flavoured carbonated beverage
1x Family Guy showbag
1x Happy Tree Friends Lumpy toy
1x Corn on the cob with butter
1x hot dog with cheese
1x ticket to KAMAZAKE! (best.show.ride.ever)

When the guy was buckling me into the ride, he says in his bri'ish accent
"So you like The Living End?"
Me. *nods*
him "Yeah they're mad, they're mad. Like me!"

I am eating rice with failed garlic sauce. Not bad.

I really don't take school seriously... :(

Good Luck!!!!

I managed to score this Monday and Friday off work! I haven't had a day off for months (since I started this job) and the last few weeks I've worked 6 day weeks, for at least 10 hours most weekdays. Man I'm going to enjoy sleeping in tomorrow. :D

Engineering. What was I bloody thinking?

I made that same mistake. But I learned that it's never too late to quit. So that's what I've done. I just wish I'd done it 7 years earlier.

Ah well. I like engineering.

skitbra

I used to like it, and I still find it interesting (well, a small facet of it anyway - Fe/C phase diagrams will always be cool, and solidification in general) but not interesting enough to want to have a career in the field. Starting a PhD was my biggest mistake though. That ruined it for me completely. If I'd just found a job after graduation who knows, I might be happily working for Comalco or something now.

Aaron
10-01-2006, 11:24 PM
Whoa, you don't do materials engineering, do you? That's sad to hear, though... but there's not much point pursuing something for the rest of your life that you're not keen on, I suppose. I'm only in 2nd year, but I've always liked the idea of doing a PhD... but it seems a bit loopy at my school. I'd have to go somewhere else. (As an aside, I did an industrial training placement with Alcoa - who used to be part of Comalco - last summer).

I hate that the guy on weekend Sunrise yesterday told me that daylight savings started last night, so I was lying in bed not knowing if it was 7:30 or 8:30.
I love a coffee in the morning.
I'm looking forward to going back to school.
I love that I'll be able to tell my mates about TLE which will help me relive old memories from last week.
I reckon these holidays have been the best ever!

I hate contradictions in medicine.
I'm on an antihistamine, Polaramine, for my chronic hayfever.
Just researched it and the side effects listed are:

• sleepiness
• thickening of mucus, tight chest, stuffy nose
• upset stomach and loss of appetite

Which is stupid considering it makes my hayfever worse with the second dot point - *bangs head on desk*
