Only problem I have with S+M is the lack of pre-Black songs in the setlist

Well, having listened to Death Magnetic - they're definitely back on form - and I liked St. Anger (so shoot me :p). Definitely more old-school style than St. Anger ever was.
S&M is a great live album, his clean vocals there are the best they ever were (and will be), but for grit and growl you need Live Shit: Binge & Purge - easily the era when Hetfield was in his prime (well, probably more like '89 - '92 / '93 was the prime).
I agree with the call about pre-Black songs on the S&M set, though I heard they tried doing Fade to Black when they were working with the orchestra but they just couldn't make it work. Sanitarium would've been sweet, too. But some straight up songs like Seek or Whiplash it just doesn't gel with the strings... though I would love to see them try Whiplash with a string section (bahaha).
Anyone else heard the DM leak yet? I need to talk with SOMEONE about it!
daveGOD grohl rocks
Correct. Dave Grohl > Metallica.
They were boring as batshit at the Big Day Out, but I had seen them in about 1995 at Melbourne Park (Rod Laver) and they were great.
St. Anger was crap. And their cover of 53rd & 3rd was fucking woeful. I wanted to stab my ears out with a blunt instrument.

double kick is the least of st anger's problems, compared to bands like trivium or avenged sevenfold, it's pretty acceptable.

Would've loved to have seen Ride The Lightning, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Leper Messiah, Disposable Heroes etc on it.
I'm sure Fade To Black would have worked if the orchestra didn't stray as far from the original like they did in songs like Master Of Puppets and One

St. Anger is probably one of my favourite metallica albums. I like the kinda 'industrial' sounding thing going on there. Although the trash can does get a little annoying after a while, and some of the songs drag out a few minutes longer than they should, i still don't mind most of the songs on there.
I'm so pumped for Death Magnetic though, i quite like with My Apocalypse and Cyanide. Love the 'Suicide/i've already died' part, and i also dig most of the riffs going on in there. I feel it kinda loses its way a bit for the middle third, it's kinda like Kirk has chucked in random solos to fulfil his ego, but it's awesome nonetheless. ;)
The Day That Never Comes is my favourite Metallica song since the black album.

i remember saying the exact same thing about fade to black after first hearing S&M. Far too many songs from load and reload which could have been spent on their pre black albums.

You might be able to convince me otherwise, but nearly every metalcore band has sounded like over-produced whiny nu-metal. But hey...
What's strange though, I fucken love metal influenced hardcore/crossover thrash (think early suicidal, cro-mags, etc.) but cannot stand hardcore influenced metal... aka... metalcore...

Its not that hard, Death Magnetic sounds very much like Metallica and is hard to be mistaken. And it only has has 10 tracks on the album, not that many.
Or maybe, you might be bragging that you got to listen to it before its release date? Thats not really something to brag about at all. I've heard tracks from 2 years ago that were possible for the album but never got past live performances, potential tracks for the album, and also B sides and demos of more than 15 songs that were in the mix for Death Magnetic.

You wouldn't happen to be talking about... Mission: Metallica (http://www.missionmetallica.com), would you? I don't think that counts as hearing "potential tracks for the album, and also B sides and demos of more than 15 songs that were in the mix for Death Magnetic" - not in full, anyway. Just snippets of unreleased riffs and songs - since they've got the album up for streaming at metallica.com and M:M.
And besides, The New Song and The Other New Song were released on LiveMetallica. I'm not calling you out, just saying. Unless, i'm wrong and you've stumbled upon some serious gold.

they've tried to fit too much into each song for my liking.
some people might enjoy waiting 2-3 minutes until a song actually finds its rhythm, but i just get bored.
the drums are too loud, there's only 2 or 3 points in the entire album where you can hear any bass at all.
lar's had gone from one extreme to the other with his snare since st anger, it comes across really heavy and solid.
and the unforgiven 3 was an obvious and weak attempt to link this to early-mid 90's metallica.
there's only so many times you can re-write the same song.
but having said that, the guitar work is awesome - the vocals and lyrics are fairly solid.
it's easily not their best work, but it still shits all over st anger.
Strider
09-17-2008, 04:24 PM
Fair to say St Anger was just plain shit...The riffs and powerchords are definitely a highlight of the album, the solo's aren't quite as good as they could have been. But that's just me being extremely nitpicky :p
