I'd heard that they wouldnt release a simpsons movie until the show had finished forever. I dont want it to end, I'll cry all the time. And the movie will be sucky. I just know it will be awful, and it will be a totally stupid way to end my most favourite show ever. Sad panda.

Instead of a whole new thread, I'll post this:

Matt Groening has confirmed that the movie will be released in July in all parts of the world. So we won't have to wait a bunch of months like the Tenacious D movie.

And it will contain every character that has appeared in the series.

That means Hank Scorpio is coming back :D

As awesome as the Simpsons is, the movie is about 10 years too late. I can't believe they're still flogging the horse. Hopefully the movie is a little more funny than the last few seasons.

I doubt I'll bother seeing it.

I'm so unbelievable sick of The Simpsons. All the new episodes are crap, so I hate watching them, and the old episodes have been played so many times that they make me want to scratch out my eyes.

Actually, I think most of the jokes on Family Guy are directed at adults (as apposed to kids). Which is probably why some people don't understand some of the implied humour! Simpsons on the other hand caters for just about all ages cos the jokes are right in your face and very blatant.

I dunno what shows you've been watching. The Simpsons has it's in your face jokes but there's so much more behind it. B-Sharps episode is the perfect example. Man I love that episode

I've been watching since I was what, 4? And it's only in recent years that I've picked up certain jokes or references, The Simpsons is witty as all heck!
The new episodes a couple of years ago were a bit crap I'll admit but in the last year most of 'em have definitely had me laughing so I dunno....

I pretty much only watch Family Guy for Stuey :D

I think thats a stupid thing to say. Simpsons is definitely aimed at a broader audience, but family guy is in no way more adult.
because the content on the simpsons is more advanced, covers a wider range of topics, more people like it. I loved the show when I was a kid, but I wouldn't have understood most of the pop culture references, I just liked the slapstick, the one liners and what-not.
Family Guy might pretend to be directed at adults, but the humour is just so fucking juvenile, and they know teenagers are their main audience. Its like how you see a bunch of fat loser kids sitting around, and one of them says "dickhead" out of nowhere and the other fat kids laugh.
Thats not to say I dont like family guy, but I do agree with Julian that it needs to be rude to be funny. I mean, its not even satirical. Its just people calling meg ugly, brian calling stewie gay, lois getting hurt, peter being a retard and chris talking about that stupid monkey (which is the worst thing in the entire show).

besides, pretty much every little thing on family guy was already on the simpsons ten years ago.
Family guy is funny, but its duh-duh funny. lowest-common denominator humour.
I know the simpsons has many a moment like that, but theres also the constant running commentary/satire of pop culture and current events.

maybe the reason that the simpsons was so much better ten years ago was because popular culture was so much better ten years ago. The simpsons is a mockery of society. If society gets lamer, stupider and more apathetic than ever, then so does the simpsons.

Ergo, for all of you who complain about the state of the simpsons today, you only have yourselves to blame.

Did anyone else notice the trailer says "The Simpsons movie in 2D".. but it looks like there's a bit of Futurama style computer animation in the crane.

And the first thing Homer crashes into looks like Scorpio!

The Simpsons movie will either extend the life of the Simpsons or kill it.. nothing much happened to The Jetsons after the Jetsons movie.

Well to me the Simpsons is very blatant humour. Actually, most mainstream American humour is. On the other hand if you look at British humour it's a lot more clever and carefully crafted. Take Monty Python for example. And British comedy series seems to have more character development as apposed to one liners (ie the Office). That's just my own observations.

My point was Family Guy is more so directed at Adults, Simpsons caters for all ages. The fact it's more rude would probably suggest the very point you're trying to disprove. Society has become more rude. When Simpsons first came out most of you probably wouldn't remember it caused a huge uproar for being too rude for kids. I remember parents complaining about banning it and so forth. The values of society have changed drastically since the late 80's. I guess the real irony of this is that it shows how stupid people are to continue watching a show which has been flogged to death for many moons. Which as you mention, you only have yourselves to blame. Good point I must say.

Well the fact you're a teenager and you hang around teenagers, I wouldn't expect u to know many adults who watch it. I haven't watched any new series of the Simpsons for the past 2/3 years, but I will see the movie for sure. The scene the trailer showed had me in stitches.

The Simpsons is a gazillion times better, smarter and funnier than Family Guy. Family Guy isn't funny at all, I think its horrendously shite. The episodes Ive seen where they refer to old movies (something the Simpsons mastered) are so blatantly obvious they just aren't funny. "Oh look, they have people around for dinner and the kids sing that Sound of Music song. Its funny because it was in Sound of Music." No, its not funny because you forgot to do anything with it. Just re-enacting the scene is NOT funny. The use of non-sequiters in the show also piss me off. OMG! LOL! SO RANDOM! More like, so boring. I don't want to watch a show full of stupid non sequiters that have noting to do with anything. It isn't the making the writers out to be geniuses, or "random" (I could go on another side rant as how it can't be random becuase they actually thought of it so it isnt random at all and kids should stop trying to be "oh so random" and stop using the word "random" like that, it really bugs me). The overuse of non sequiters actually try to cover up that there is no real good story behind the show. The Simpsons were great at the odd non sequiter. They knew that you can't rely on it to make the show funny. Family Guy relies on it and makes the show crap. I'm no prude, but I also hate it when a show attempts to get laughs from crude humour. Its a cheap laugh. Its boring and unintelligent. Cheap laughs suck.

Yeah, I know what your point was. MY point was that you're wrong.
Family Guy's demographic would probably be, say, 15-25 yr olds who talk about farting a lot.
The simpsons is probably aimed maybe 10-25, all of them, ever. I don't see how you can possibly say that Family Guy is better in any way.. the simpsons aims to please a wider age group with wider interests. The more I think about it, the more I want to go and take all my family guy dvds back to the store and exchange them for simpsons season's that I dont have yet.

As for this "most of you wouldnt remember" crap.. you would have been, what, 2 when the show first started?
You ought to know that theres always some retard who wants to complain about anything fun. You really should know that, because you're doing it right now.
Its not just the 80s, in fact, the simpsons probably gets more complaints today than it did when it began. I knew kids that werent allowed to watch it because their lame parents thought it was too grown up.
But I turned out better than all those kids, and its probably because of the Simpsons. They're just that great.
but anyway, the Simpsons wasnt really aimed at children when it first began. Sure, they KNEW kids would watch it, but if it was created for children only it would have been showed on a saturday morning.

I think this argument is stupid. You act like you're so damn smart, like you're soooo informed about everything, but i guess the real irony here is that Strider the Genius watches family guy...
It makes you look stupider than anything else you've said on here, ever.

Strider

Did I ever once state Family Guy was better? I love Simpsons, all the older episodes anyway. I just feel my humour has changed since I was 10 years old, it's called evolution. In fact I don't even watch TV much at all. The only time I watch Family Guy is on DVD at my mate houses. I'd rather spend time getting out of the house and getting something like exercise? You know, the thing most kids don't do these days.

Anyways, I will always like find Simpsons it's just most of the jokes have been done a billion times which is why shows like Family Guy are directed at people of THIS generation, people want something different. Just cos you're stuck in the 90's doesn't mean everyone else is.

I think you're getting me confused with yourself. I pretty much started watching the simpsons when it came out, you were probably still a fetus.

And that's a laugh, you turned out better than all those kids cos of the Simpsons? hahaha Very debatable. And I guess you're probably the only one who believes that. Good onya, that's the spirit =)

Holy shit, if what your saying is true and Family Guy is humour for this generation.... the future is fucked. At least the Simpsons had something to say in their shows (remember the Michael Jackson episode? It got banned in South Africa because in Lisa's room there was a poster saying "END APARTHEID NOW!"). Family Guy says nothing. Family Guy is a one joke pony, and its the same fucking joke every fucking episode. Just like Little Britian. God, I hate that show.

Strider

To be honest, I haven't watched that much of Family Guy (I actually have a life that doesn't only revolve around TV and the net). But what I HAVE seen was a lot more funnier than the new episodes of Simpsons. And that is my opinion and the whole point I was trying to make. Depite the fact Little Britain has a lot of toilet humour and gay jokes, it's still incredibly funny. I guess different things cater to different peoples taste! Just like Micallef, some people don't find him funny at all.

Julian, if u think Mirm has mad debating skills u should probably get out more often (or visit other boards rather than this one). Anyone who has to throw in personal insults generally is a poor debater. And I'm not saying I'm good at debating cos I do it myself. The thing that I hate Little Britain the most is that its the same episode over and over and over again. Its the same characters doing the same thing, just in different settings. You really can't keep doing the old lady urinating everywhere joke week in week out. Each episode needed to be different, but it was the same and thus became too predictable. "Oh... its the old lady that pisses everywhere. Yep, she did it again" or "Oh look, its the spewing person. Yep, they spewed"...

Strider
01-25-2007, 06:30 PM
Different settings, yet the punchline is always the same. That sort of humour works around the whole concept that each character has an ongoing joke. I reckon it's incredibly funny hahaha Because it becomes more of "when are they gonna do it" as apposed to "what are they gonna do". And when they do something different, it's even funnier. But the good thing about Little Britain is that they left it there after 3 series. They didn't drag it on and oooon for 20 billion seasons.

AlinaPOW
01-25-2007, 06:41 PM

Julian
01-25-2007, 11:58 PM
That makes absoloutley no sense. This isn't a Simpsons forum, there are people from teenagers to adults here and not everyone has said they are a fan of The Simpsons, particulary the new episodes. I don't get how you can say The Simpsons has blatant humour. Like the b-sharps episode, with the constant pop culture refrences to The Beatles. Family Guy could never do anything clever like that and if they did it would just be one stupid line added in that makes no sense to the plot whatsoever. You actually haven't backed up what you've said about WHY you think Family Guy is better except for 'the simpsons has blantant humour, family guy is made for adults'.

Julian
01-26-2007, 12:11 AM
Oh and if you revert back to this whole 'Oh this must be some type of hidden forum hierachy to work against me', then go fuck yourself. EVERY time people start putting their arguments across, ones with their opinions and you disagree, you think that the forum must hate you because they have a different opinion and have the ability to back it up. If you dislike this, why don't you just fuck off? I mean you always brag about the great life you have outside of the boards. Oh yeah, but you care so little about what other people think of you that you would rather stay here in a place where you can whinge about how everyone one is kissing someones ass and how you are so fucking superior cause you don't

Strider
01-26-2007, 12:14 AM
It makes complete sense. You're agreeing with someone about the Simpsons in a Simpson thread (not a family guy thread)......I don't know how that can get anymore simpler to comprehend.
I honestly don't care about Family Guy OR Simpsons hahaha That's the funny thing. I reckon Family Guy caters for more older people because everyone who's around my age all agree that The Simpsons has been done to death and Family guy is funnier now. I haven't even watched that many Family Guy episodes but the ones I have watched were funny, perhaps some people are right in saying Family Guy just regurgites jokes. I can't make a valid judgement on that because I haven't seen every episode. But if people around my age are saying it then there must be some truth in it. Taking into account all these people ALSO like the Simpsons. But the fact is people around my age were all brought up with Simpsons where as all the teens on this site have only been exposed to the magic of the Simpsons in the last few years (more than likely).

*waits for a response of, Oh but I've watched the Simpsons since I was 1*

Julian
01-26-2007, 12:21 AM
No I didn't watch The Simpsons when I was 1. And like you said, you have only seen a couple of Family Guy episodes so yes, of course you're right. You can't make a valid argument on how the Simpsons overuse jokes and Family Guy is so amazing. Again, you haven't adressed how you think the Simpsons use blatant humour.

Strider
01-26-2007, 12:26 AM
Cos it's just the same jokes over. How many times can u say Doh before it gets old? haha I just think Family Guy is different in a good way. But as I said, I love Simpsons. All the older episodes are absolute classics. Perfect scripting. I just think the jokes are very obvious and always has been in the simpsons. They're very dumbed down which again, can be extremely funny. But if it's overused then it gets old. Sure they have references to other things which appeals to older generations, but for the most part it's just 'in your face' humour.

Julian
01-26-2007, 12:29 AM
I bet you anything there's still references in there that you still don't get. Like that wonderbat episode. It's actually based on some american baseball movie which I can't remember the name off. Once I saw it I thought 'hey that's from The Simpsons'. I saw the episode again and it was even better. You'd never get something like that with Family Guy. But hey you're right, the Simpsons overuses jokes like 'doh'

Strider

Actually, Family Guy has heaps of references that would probably go over most peoples head. For example, a lot of internet jokes have been used in Family Guy (Like the fat dude who thought he was a jedi and some computer guy animated him with a light saber in his hand). I saw them animate that guy into Family Guy and couldn't stop laughing! I'm guessing only 1% of the audience probably understood that joke. Another example is when the Dad started playing Rock Lobster by the B52's on Guitar. Most younger people don't even know who the hell the B52's are!

Julian
01-26-2007, 12:38 AM
What made the fact that he was playing Rock Lobster funny though? OMG ITS SO RANDOM

Strider
01-26-2007, 12:48 AM
Spot on haha And the fact it's Rock Lobster! I love that song. See, that joke probably doesn't register with a lot of people cos they'd never heard the song before they saw that episode.

Julian
01-26-2007, 12:49 AM
The creators of Family Guy are geniuses!

Oh and i'll think it leave it here. I think you humiliated yourself enough by saying that not many people understood a joke with which there is nothing to get.

Strider
01-26-2007, 12:57 AM
It's a matter of connecting with your audience. If your a creator and your audience doesn't know your material, it aint as funny. Common sense.

The thing about The Simpsons is that, no matter how many times you watch it, there's usually something you haven't picked up on yet - especially for my age group. When I was younger I picked on the general in-yer-face humour of Homer strangling Bart, or Lisa pwning Bart..but now I understand a lot more of the jokes and references that are done subtley.

Humour like 'Friends' annoy me, particularly when people say it's the funniest show. Laugh when the audience laughs? Not tricky. Family Guy is a step up, without an audience, but the jokes are still quite in-yer-face, it's mindless and doesn't need such a wide range of experiences and knowledge of world affairs to understand.

Little Britain is, mostly, in an American style of humour I reckon. Compared to the wit of things like Monty Python and such, it's just low.

But if people around my age are saying it then there must be some truth in it.

People around me are telling me that Fergie is a good musical artists and her songs are awesome. Is there truth in that?

Family Guy does have pop culture references, agreed... but they don't execute it as well as The Simpsons. They don't DO anything with the reference. They just chuck it in and hope people will laugh because "omg that was so totally this movie omg how random". I just don't see the funny. I again use as my reference point the episode where they chucked references to the Sound of Music in it. They had the kids singing the good night song and then they went to bed. That is what happens EXACTLY in the musical. The show didn't bother to make a joke on it, they just do animated versions of movie scenes. That isn't funny. The simpsons are geniuses at being sutble. A great example of that is the references to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest in the episode where Homer gets committed. Family Guy just doesn't get that.

I agree that the past few seasons hasn't entertained me. I haven't bothered watching any new Simpsons episodes for a very long time. But to write off the show on the later seasons is giving it rough justice. The show will be remembered in 20 years time, Family Guy won't.

I agree with that. But it' also true with just about anything related to movies or TV. Take Grease, when I was a kid I watched that show and it was just a singalong. When u get older u look at it from a different perspective and start to pick up on all the sexual connotations and hidden jokes which kids have no understanding of.

I reckon Little Britain is a dumbed down version of Monty Python. Not as politically motivated, just more of the 'dressing up as women', and childish jokes. Still funny tho.

There may be truth in that, perhaps. Just cos you don't like her style of music doesn't take away from the fact she may be a good musician however.

And I agree that Simpsons will be remembered for a long long time. But you'll find most of the repeats on TV have been all the popular episodes, so it probably reflects the quality of the latest series...

oh btw, nice pic Mirm, did u have a haircut? I think red suits you.

Repeats-yes, there are many. Shockingly enough, I have yet to get sick of any...

Bec

I can't be bothered getting into a debate or anything about this but:

I like the simpsons but I've seen the old episodes so much now that they aren't really that funny anymore, and I don't find the new episodes too funny to begin with.

I like family guy but it would be a lot better if when they made random references to things, they actually did something funny with it rather than just re-enacting it, like a few people mentioned.

I also like Little Britain but the jokes get old quickly, and some of them I didn't even find funny the first time. I liked watching the 'very little britain' they used to show on abc after Dr Who, I think the 15 minuteish timeslot worked better for that show.

And since Jessii brought it up, I prefer South Park to all the shows I just mentioned.

I do that with Family Guy with Brian being the dimwitted father, that girl being the smartish independent girl, the boy being dumb as well and Meg being fairly similar to Marge. Except there's a talking dog and Stewie. But yeah, LETS NOT GET INTO THIS AGAIN.

I don't think meg or chris are comparable to bart and lisa, really.

I'd compare brian to lisa, I think. The voice of reason, the person who realises more that everyone else in the family is completely stupid. I dunno.. I've just never seen that many similarities between the griffin family and the simpson clan.
