I love the colour! I initially wanted a Tenneesee Rose cos of the colour, but due to me being left-handed it's too friggen hard getting the more rare guitars lol. But luckily I managed to get a left-handed Anny which was actually built to Chris's specs. The guy I bought it off was a huge Living End fan.
Nice guitar Fritz.

Just that Gretsch or Gretsch guitars in general?? Cos I think most of them look bad from that angle. But when the F holes are in shadow they look awesome. It's how they look from the audience which really matters in my opinion ;)

Neo
09-23-2008, 08:46 PM
that one, and also the malcom young next to it and several others. some of them are nice though.

Fritz

honestly the malcolm and the power tenny are fantastic examples of gretsch guitars that look bad in photos but stunning in real life

how much did you pay for it?

WHITE FALCON
09-24-2008, 03:04 PM
beautiful guitar mate!
and amp!
is it an old 800 or a new one?

Mitch-PTV
09-24-2008, 03:08 PM
mine cost me $2999, i got it new just over a year ago.
so yea it cost me a bit, but considering its RRP is $3999 i didnt get too bad of a deal (compared to mick it seems like i got screwed over tho)

still, for what its got, its a damn good price.

Mitch-PTV
09-24-2008, 03:11 PM
and the amp is an '84 JCM 800 2203 model.
i went into the local for a pack of strings... walked out with that (well a piece of paper saying that i have 6 months to pay for that)

gota love buying on an impulse.
explaining to mum why i payed $1900 for an amp thats almost twice my age was half the battle.
parents never seem to understand these things.

Hey Mitch, I'm glad to join the power tenny club.

Theres only 100 of us , its very exclusive :D

Dont let any of my prices put you down, im endorsed by gretsch and also know many close contacts in the 2nd hand gear department :) I'm a lucky one..

Fritz
09-24-2008, 05:10 PM
I skip customs and tax. Yes more contacts :p

Shipping was $100au.

The whole process of the power tenny was about $1800

Ben reed
09-24-2008, 05:13 PM
far out thats good!
im scared of customs and tax coz dad bought this piece of furniture when he was in bali and they kept slapping on more and more charges and the thing ended up being twice what they said it would be..

Fritz
09-24-2008, 05:16 PM
tax and customs fees on your average guitar is about $350 - $500 depending on how much the guitar is worth.

Welcome to the club mate, we got jackets... well we should have, id buy one.
needless to say, your going to love your new toy,

out of curiosity, are you going to change out the bridge pickup for a classic plus? or are you keeping the power'trons in it?
some don't like the tone of them, but with the right settings, they are perfect for rock in my opinion... but still, i wouldnt mind having a second gretsch to chuck classics in.

and how long was the wait on the wizard head? i looked into them before but apparently theres a pretty long waiting list for them? did you find it second hand as well or did you wait in line?

also, how does someone like yourself get endorsed by Gretsch? impressive.

Fritz
09-24-2008, 07:36 PM
Hey mate.

Right away I put classics in it. I'm not sure how the powertrons would go live for me. I'm using it at a gig tonight for the first time so i'll see how I go... If I need abit more oomph then I'll put the powertrons back in.

Keep in mind this guitar, with classics sound way more rock than any of my other hollow gretsch's with classics.

I got my wiz straight away from a second hand dealer in the USA. It was and still is in mint condition. It lives in a roadcase that I purchased for it too.

And the gretsch thing, I was approaced by the (now former) CEO of Gretsch USA when he was out here years ago when meeting up with Chris cheney in regards to designing a certain signature guitar :p He heard good things about the band I was in at the time and apparently some people requested for me to be more associated with Gretsch. Who knows.... But thats how that happened.

way more rock you say?
i cant say ive ever played a gretsch with classic plus pickups before (ive played a setzer with classics), and even tho i loved the sound of it, i would of liked it if the pickups were a bit more ballsy, but still had that sound thats unique to gretsch, thats why im loving the powertrons (however, if the classic plus is an improvement... ill have to check it out).

ah, in a perfect world dealers would let you try the pickups in your guitar before you buy them

how much did that wizard set you back?

Fritz
09-25-2008, 12:50 PM
did a gig last night with the tenny. sounded unreal. was way more 'ballsy' than my other hollows and it only had classics! i think if i put the powertrons in it it would be too much for me.

and the 2nd hand wiz with shipping was about 5500

Ben reed
09-25-2008, 01:13 PM
why does the power tenny sound more ballsy?
trestle bracing maybe?

Mitch-PTV
09-25-2008, 04:34 PM
my guess would be the trestle bracing combined with the 16" x 2.75" body.
the setzers have bracing but a thinner body

Mitch-PTV
09-28-2008, 02:00 AM
so i just got back from the enmore show. they played a realy good show, excelent night. '
i was suprised to see that chris used his power tenny for majority of the night. it was good to see it get some use, it sounded amazing.

but about 70% of the night was on the power tenny, with 27% on the signature falcon, and the other 3% on POW and his setzer... i only recall him playing one song on the setzer tho... i duno, but yeah, i was watching him spill beer all over it during E Boogie, thinking "wow... im never gunna do that to my guitar" cool, yet kinda painful to watch.

but yeah, he seemed to favor the power tenny for tonights show. i was expecting maybe 2 or 3 songs with it, but most of the show was played with it

Fritz
09-28-2008, 02:51 AM
yeah at campbelltown he used the power tenny for 5 or 6 songs straight. 6120 for the 2 encore songs and yeah back and forth betwenn the falcons. Maybe my advice to chris to play it more came true..!

b_urself
09-28-2008, 09:41 AM
hey im gunna be a heaps big dusche here but i think the ptv looks a bit plain. its just .... red, sure the shade of red is magnificient but its just red and for me a big part of gretsch guitars is their unique finishes.. tiger maple, 2 tone green, setzer hotrods, white falcons. sorry guys but thats my opinion. they are still far and above any other brand of guitars lol

all night it was the power tenny, and he swaped it for his sig falcon after about 4 or 5 songs, but within another 2 songs, the power tenny was back again.
off memory he played the setzer model once... if that. he used POW for 2 songs, then it was back to the power tenny, untill it was covered in beer and his sig falcon ended the night.

i can understand where your comming from with that, judging off pictures, but the finish is the most unique part of the guitar.
i agree in the pictures it looks really plain, but its not untill you see it in person, that you truely apreciate how beautiful the guitar is, expecialy when seen under a few shades of light...

but hey, its all personal preferance. some people will love it, some will hate it, in the end, its a bloody good guitar.

b_urself
09-28-2008, 11:51 AM

unbound neck, headstock and f-holes

wats the difference between the ptv and the gretsch im getting "120th anni" besides the finish of course

Mitch-PTV
09-28-2008, 12:16 PM
im not sure, but off the top of my head i would say body dimensions (the power tenny would have a deeper body), pickups, possibly trestle bracing, im not too sure

Fritz
09-28-2008, 01:58 PM
i can understand people saying that too. But honestly.......................................... .................................................. ............................so?

Its a great guitar, mitch, myself and chris cheney all agree. Its a very unique guitar as its so great for rock and turning it up loud. It handles it so damn well for a hollow guitar.

Keep in mind its designed to look like a 50's tennessean...

It is plain in appearance compared to falcons and 6120's? yes maybe. But when i used it at 2 gigs this week the 400 people at each gig were all looking at me and they dont usually when im playing the duo jet! Got many compliments on it.

Is it plain compared to annies, strats ? no way!

The beautiful finish struggles to come up in photos. Here are some better photos.

exactly, the guitar is ment to be a 50's tennessean rose thats been hot rodded. if it had all the bindings and inlays its closer to a 6120 than a tennessean.

the red neck contrasts really well with the black ebony board, and in all honesty, i think a bound neck would kill it a bit. in saying that, the off white binding suits the colour much better than plain white would.
before i bought the guitar, i thought that the off white would kill it, but the creamy/yellowy colour really works with the red.
the pictures never do it justice.

Fritz
09-28-2008, 03:42 PM
absolutely. especially what you said about the bindings etc would turn it into a 6120. Thats the whole point of this guitar... Its a limited edition (only 100 ever ever ever made) because nothing exactly like it has been done before. It looks like a tennessean but with the scale and features and of a top of the line 6120.

Mitch-PTV
09-28-2008, 05:17 PM
the power tennys beauty comes through its simplicity.
its simple, not plain.

i love how when gretsch release a limited model, they take the basis of what they want, such as a 50's tenny, then add in top of the line specs, make a truely unique guitar, and then list it for the same price as the entry level model.
the power tenny costs the same as an ordinary tennesse rose...
they are either making huge amounts of profit off the production models, or making next to nothing on the limited models. either way, its good to see a flat price.

i got mine at south coast music in nowra.
its an hours drive away, but dad works up there, and he knew i was looking at a gretsch and he said that they had a few nice ones up there. i played each one, and the tenny was the one for me.

aparently hes getting in a cheney model and a stray cats tribute model aswell.

ahhh gretschpages is GAY these days. Years ago it was great but now its just a bunch of old fuckers arguing 'nah my gretsch is better cos it has 17 bolts!, nah mine is better cos it has 18 bolts!, nah your all fucked mine has 19 bolts which is how many the ones in the 50's had therefore mine is better!'

yea im Mit(cheney) on there. im not on there much anymore tho... i make the occasional post tho.
your not wrong about the vintage area tho. if im there, its only in the modern guitars section. people there dont really worship the 50's, however they think that all of lifes problems can be solved by putting a bar bridge on your guitar.

and for the record, i didnt think of the name mit(cheney), im not that self obsessed... my friend just calls me that becasue i have a gretsch

So... It looks like I may be one of the lucky people to join the Power Tenny club!

So to all those TLE forumers who already have one, what is it like? How are the Powertrons in comparison to TV Classics? What's feedback like live? And most importantly... how awesome does it look???

cheers,

Dave

Dare I say it, but I think my Power Tenny is the best guitar I own. Definatly the best giggable hollow I own, it hardly feeds back and it handles volume so damn well. Dare I say it's sslliigghhttllyy better than the Cheney sig model ? It's hard to pick them apart from a playability and live reliability point of view.

You probably wont find a better hollow Gretsch guitar for rockin' out some hard tones on stage.

The differences aint massive between classics and powertrons. Noticable difference but not oudda control different. No matter what pickups you have in a Power Tenny, they seem to have this natural compression thing happening which no other Gretsch hollow seems to capture quite as well.

So I've just bought a Power Tenny from the US!!! Got it for US$1350 plus s/h.

Looks like it's in awesome nick. Can't wait for it to arrive!!!!!!

Here's some pics of it taken by the seller... Will post some of my own when it arrives. Such a shame the colour doesn't show up real well on pics.

so much buying and selling going on there.

TheColonel

Yeah, it's not too bad over there. Some good bargains to be had.

I was real lucky to pick it up. The reason the owner was selling it was purely financial... Poor bugger.

I would hate to have to sell a guitar like that just coz I needed money... It would break my heart!

Ben reed
04-07-2009, 10:44 PM

Ben reed

well there's another power tenny on the gretsch pages for 1350 us, a 2008 model.
not sure if its been sold yet though
other wise ill be looking at anni's on ebay, probably at from rocky at streets sounds.
but to be honest i'm up for anything in my price range that was produced after fender took over

TheColonel
04-07-2009, 11:44 PM
That power tenny looks great! I'd just wanna see some recent pics to make sure it's in the same condition as what he's shown on ebay...

The Anniversary with TV Jones pickups looks awesome:

http://gretschguitars.com/gear/index.php?product=G6118T-LTV&cat1=&cat2=&q=&st=1

It a bit expensive though... A$6000+ with the recent price rise.

What's your price range, Benno?

Ben reed
04-08-2009, 12:10 AM
there's no way that i'd afford one from australia.
i'd have to buy from the US and get it shipped in.
so depending on how much i end up saving, it's about 1800.
maybe more if i have to.
At the moment i have about 1750 but i want to save more than what i'm willing to spend so i'm not left with no money.
It would help if the AUS dollar was still as good as it was last year!

I hope so! :-)

only 12 days now... arrgh, this is killing me!!!

ben,

i reckon you should check this site out. their new stuff looks a lot cheaper than any of the other american sites - might be worth seeing if they've got any 2nd hand stuff...

otherwise, ebay and gretschpages.com seem to be the goto places.

Yeah, that's what I struggled with when I was looking at the Power Tenny.

there was a few things that I did to cover my ass through the whole process... PayPal helps a lot, insures you for some aspects. I also got a guarantee from the seller that what he photographed was the real thing. And if it comes down to the fact that it doesn't suit me, they have an awesome resale value in oz because they are a limited edition and just so awesome.

I wouldn't do it with anything that is a standard run. i would def go through a dealer or try it out first.

Mitch-PTV
04-09-2009, 08:18 AM
buying guitars online is pretty risky, but if your buying a quality guitar, from a dealer or a trusted seller (like someone from the gretsch pages) you SHOULD be in safe hands.

Congrats on the Power tenny :) your gunna love it. there isnt to much that i can say that hasnt been said already, the guitar looks and sounds amazing.

Fritz

Just a tone switch. He's had it wired for neautral position and taken the switch out. They often get in the way when strumming. Nice decal sticker also. And by decal sticker I mean cutout piece of paper stuck on with clear sticky tape

Mitch-PTV

i was waiting for the day that he'd take out the mud switch. i dont know a player that acutally uses them.

on a side note, i was trying out small, portible (4 watt) valve amps, and i was playing through the white falcon that they had at the shop. it sounded great through it, so i got my dad to drive down and bring my Power tenny to the store so i can try that through it.

i was amazed how much better the power tenny sounded compared to the falcon. they were pretty similar in that they both had trestle bracing and filtertron style pickups, and the power tenny blew it away.
i know that the tenny has better pickups, but the difference was more than just the sound comming from the pickups.
i always saw the falcons as this ultimate guitar, but i already own a guitar that sounds and feels so much better - for half the price.

Mitch-PTV
04-29-2009, 07:00 PM

that 2nd photo is pretty unreal hey. looks awesome!

SOrry im just being a nazi, but it aint a mud switch!! It's a tone switch. A much switch was a 2nd option tone switch which was alot more drastic sounding than the standard tone switch. Only some old gretsch's from the 50's and 60's came with them. My '61 tennessean has one and yep its totally useless haha

Mitch-PTV
04-30-2009, 05:06 PM
haha sorry about that,
either way, its a switch thats virtually useless. the guitar sounds best in the middle position, which takes it out of the circuit.

Hey fellas,

My Tenny arrived yesterday... As everyone has said, it is an awesome machine!

I have left the PowerTrons in there for the moment. MIGHT change them out for some classics soon, but funds are lacking because of this beautiful guitar.

I would like some suggestions as to how to make it sound a bit better though. I've changed the strings to some 11-48 Ernie Balls (Power Slinky), and have tried fiddling with the pickup height and polepieces. But still sounds... i dunno??? maybe tinny is the best word for it? a bit of a lack of bass response, and that is compared to my electro with classics.

so any suggestions?

TheColonel
09-19-2010, 11:34 PM
Ai'ite, time to pull this one out of the vault....

Dare I say it - after owning the Cheney, Firebird and Tenny for 14 months now, I think the tenny is my favourite guitar. None of the others sound as smooth unplugged.... nor plugged in. Rhythm tones sound fat and rounded, lead tones sing with a natural compression I've never heard in another guitar.

I think the main reason I love this guitar is because it takes me out of my comfort zone. Whenever I'm noodling away, ideas seem to flow nicely. I experiment with different keys, tunings, voicings, and other ideas. It's almost an inspirational guitar. I think the first album might be written entirely on this guitar...

Just wanted to get that out there. :)

i'm average height too... that's why i avoid mirrors when playing the falcon :D anyway, i'm really happy with the falcon, couldn't believe the difference between it and the 6120! still, love 'em both the same & it did confirm that gretsches are the guitars for me :)

Hmm.. Very cool, I imagine they're a very rockin' axe. Any love for the zero fret?? I don't think I can remember playing a Gretsch with a zero fret. I think the only guitar I've ever played with one was the heavy old Italian acoustic (no idea what brand) that my high school had.

It doesn't really bother me.... I don't notice it any more. It does give the guitar a very nice action, beautiful and low. Bending is slightly different to normal guitars, but you get used to it.

hmm, i wonder if they'll do that? The tenny is seriously one of the best gretsches they've ever released. Why don't they make it permanent?

Joab
09-20-2010, 07:52 PM
i ask the same question, and why the hell is the cheney not in production!!

or if not, at least a WHITE FLACON with TRESTLE BRACING and TV'S?!?!?! that's the LEAST they could do surely??

the cheney is pretty much a hypothetical 'Power Falcon' with a smaller body and different bridge pu'p. surely there would be a market for that??

tomazb
09-20-2010, 08:07 PM
sure, but some don't like signature guitars. i totally agre with you all - they really should make it a permanent item.

i can understand why people ddont like signature guitars, im the same to an extent, but when the specs are just that good, you cant say no just because of a name on the headstock.

i cant see why Gretsch doesnt have a PTV series with the tenny and the Falcon.
theres the Setzer 6120s and LTV anni, which kinda covers that territory, but yea, they are really isolating a huge section of the market.

He signed it on the boot of my car in the carpark.

It was funny cos when I asked him if he could sign it, he said "I'll sign anything you want but Im leaving in 5 minutes"

I raced home at literally 100 miles an hour grabbed the guitar threw it on the back seat, (didn't have time for the case) flew back down went inside and kinda waved my texta at Chris. He goes "where is it?" "on the backseat of my car" so he lead me out and signed my guitar.

Then it occured to me that if I ever wanted to know anything about any TLE song on guitar, this was my one and only opportunity to do it. So I took full advantage of that.

I learnt so much about technique and stuff in like 2 minutes that I had with Chris than I have in the last 5 years:woot:

I just hope I didn't put too many dings on it when I threw it in the car. It was a pretty crazy 5 mins.

How did I see him? I just walk up to him like any normal bloke. He was more than happy. As we walked down the street to the carpark, we were just talking like old mates. His roadie was there too. they joked they were "gonna jump me" when i pulled the tenny out of the car. that was gold.

He signed just above the bigsby. Just like the Rev did on his Annie. I mentioned it to him. He said those guys were "loose". The Rev is gonna be in Aus in December for the Meredith music festival. Sold out though :(

funds for me :( and yesh the musos meet WILL happen at some point. i am determined.

and YESSSSSSS DEFINATELY take the pickguard and a sharpie!!! his signature is so freaking cool, its like an artwork!!

and PA system-wise, were going to spend between 2,000-2,500 on it between us. Were going to get decent speakers and a mediocre mixer, as we can upgrade the mixer later and if we wanted it a good one then our budget would be gone from the get go!

just a vocal PA at this stage too, it'll do the job fiiine.

On a lame sidenote.. I've got a song called "Mediocre Meltdown" and everytime I see that word now I kinda giggle as though I somehow have a part ownership of it.:wacko:

i'm having tenny cravings :(

Mitch-PTV
11-07-2010, 11:26 AM
so do i :) mm tenny.

... shut up and grab your cheney and Pheonix.

Joab
11-07-2010, 02:11 PM
haha k :)

i was talking to soph about my tenny cravings and i said that i might even put a feeler thread out to see if anyone was keen to swap my phoenix for a tenny. and she said that i shouldnt do the whole trade one for another, that if i want another guitar to just get one. she encouraged me to 'build up a collection".

ahhh

Mitch-PTV
11-07-2010, 02:30 PM
hahaha shes a keeper ;)

... in saying that, a girl will defend anything if it has glitter on it.

the Tenny is essentially the same as the Cheney, id just keep the Pheonix. HOWEVER, a tenny, with the Powertrons would be a great compliment.

thats why i want a setzer 6120. put the classic plus in the bridge of that, and get a set of powertrons back in the tenny, have all bases covered.
As much as I love the Classic Plus, the Powertron just had the ballsiest sound for riffs. It just sounded too dark for rhythms, and didn’t have that bark to it that the classic plus has. Still a great pickup tho.

Joab
11-07-2010, 02:39 PM
hahaha yeah she's tops :)

your right though, i totally don't need it another one... yet :ninja:

soooo many higher priorities!! el cap, jcm etc :)
