oooh - i remember HSC time... ick!

good luck everyone... not just with exams though, but with the parties that follow them exams AND with everything that goes on in the future after that...

for those planning to go the uni option - my suggestion - if you don't get the marks you're looking/hoping for - just get in the uni system, it's easier to change over once you're in there than it is to get into the courses right at the start...

i can't believe it starts tomorrow

be brave, good luck!

I have not studied at all...
What school are you at Luke? I am at Erina.

A song about the HSC

At first I was afraid, I was petrified!
Kept thinking I could never pass without revision guides,
But then I spent so many nights, getting all the questions wrong,
And I grew strong,
And I learned how to scrape along,

I won't look back, to any place,
When I can swallow 15 shots and get completely off my face,
I would have spent all day at work, I would have had no spare time free,
If I'd thought for just one second my exams would bother me,
So all my notes, are on the floor,
Don't even matter... that there's no Comedy night anymore...
Weren't you the one who tried to get me to revise?

You think I'd crumble?
You think I'd work towards the skies?

Oh no, not I!
I won't revise!
Unless I die from alcohol, I know I'll stay alive,
Though my money's at an end,
I've my overdraft to spend,
I won't revise,
I won't revise!!

It took all the strength I had, not to act the part,
But in the end my real revision didn't even start.
I used to sit at home at night, feeling guilty to myself,
I used to try,
But now hold my head up high,
And you see me! Somebody new!
I'm not that mixed up weird person who wants a good 99.2
So if you feel like dropping in, chances are that I'll be free,
Coz I've done fuck all revision, and I'll fail my HSC,

Oh no, not I!
I won't revise,
I think that I may scrape a third, but I could be telling lies!
Let the teachers all scorn,
My bed's far too nice and warm,
I won't revise,
I won't revise, yeah yeah!

I start my exams on the 13th of Nov. I started studying the other day cause I realised that ITS MY LAST YEAR AT SCHOOL!!!! hehe.
I mean, I knew it was my last year, but I was thinking about it the other night and realised that I knew I'd be pissed off at myself if I didn't give it my all for these exams. There's no coming back next year. (:D!!!)

hmm, 6 years after my VCE and I still have no idea what I want to do. My exams for Uni start in November. I think I'll finish later this year than any other (my final year) because of a crappy presentation for final year project.

With getting into courses you want, I know many people who haven't got what they wanted originally but transferred later or went from TAFE to Uni, etc. So whatever happens, just don't give up. It's never the end of the world.

The year 12s at my school had their last proper day of school today, they start their VCE in about 2 or 3 weeks I think. I am currently doing one VCE subject, so my exam for that is on the 14th... smack bang in the middle of all my year 11 exams, which start on the 8th and finish on the 17th. ARGH!

Indeed... Probably the best year in my life at this point in time. Its a shame you don't realise until years after its past.

Don't get to stressed kiddies... The emphasis placed on the HSC by teachers and parents far outweigh its benefits. Unless perhaps if you want a career in medicine or something. Some many people change degree's or leave and choose a trade within the first few months its crazy... I guess a lot realise that what they want to do isn't really what they thought they wanted to do.

If there is something you really want to do, all you need is persistence... Most universities in NSW will accept mature aged students (21 and older) if they show enthusiasm for the area of study, regardless of whether they absolutely flunked their HSC. I know four people that didn't get into the course they wanted at university so they went to tafe and did the first year. After completing the first year at tafe they walked straight into the second year of the course they wanted to do at Uni... too easy... its all persistence...

Seriously though, ignore whoever tells you that "you can socialise once your exams are done". In a few years time you will be more pissed off about missing out on chances to socialise with your friends at the end of year 12 than any negative effects it might possibly have on your results.

disclaimer: Sammas will be in no way responsible for any unexpected outcomes that may unfold from such advice. He will however, happily buy you a beer upon completion of your exams

I'm so glad this doesn't apply to me now! After 1st Semester Uni killed me I'm now taking a break from the whole school thing until next year.

I did my VCE last year. I killed myself. I started hardcore studying 6 weeks before the exams, when we got holidays for studying I started studying at 9am and continued until I couldn't stay awake anymore, which usually fell around 1-2am. I was a wreck. Let me tell you, it's not worth it.

And I don't know about you guys, but I went through High School with everyone telling me Year 12 is the hard yards, that once you get to Uni it's a breeze... they lied!

Not in Australia :P

I was reading about the difference between Australian and US universities at some point. It was pretty interesting.

They say that in the US, undergraduate education is all about learning and all that stuff. Postgrad is the time when you think about your career and future.

In Australia, they try and get to you to think about your career from about year 10! There's heaps of pressure to do a university degree which will get you a job in the end, which is why people tend to make fun of students doing arts degrees.

At a guess, i'd say that in the US unless you get a scholarship, you're paying big bucks for your own education. In Australia the government is paying for most of it and the part you have to pay, most people pay back later. So I guess its more like "WE PAY FOR YOU! SO YOU DO COURSE THAT GET JOB! OK! EMBIGGEN OUR ECONOMY! MAKE UNEMPLOYMENT 0.00001% OK! "

Oh yes! University give me fantastic analytical skills! Give me job!

ah right on Kylie, wasn't sure how graduate school would work there.

yeah, US universities tend to dismiss humanities and fine arts too.
at my school, the art building for core curriculum (first year) studios is red tagged, while the business college has a Starbucks inside it and the engineering college now possesses five or so Segways. seriously - engineering students can check them out and ride them around. your tax dollars at work!

but they ARE paying me to attend through scholarships, so I guess I can't bitch and moan too much.

I'm jealous because the typical timeframe for an undergrad degree in Australia is THREE years and not four.

Kylie eats dugong for tea
10-19-2006, 03:43 PM
Yeah, if its a four year degree then its usually an honours degree with the last year the honours year. If you have a three year degree then mostly you can choose to do an honours year afterwards if you want.

From what I can gather, you need honours or masters to do a doctorate

I think you can do masters without honours though, so you can do your masters from a 3 year degree if you like but i think it takes less time if you have an honours degree.

I'm probably not doing any of them though. Who wants to be a doctor of social science? Not me!

Oh, you can also do graduate certificate and graduate diplomas. Huzzah! If I did any postgrad then i'd do one those. No way am I doing a gigantic thesis as long as i live.

The honours thesis is 15-18 000 words as is the masters by coursework thesis. But the masters by research thesis is 35-50 thousand words! Gross!
(this is just for my course dealy anyways)

Aaron
10-19-2006, 03:53 PM
My scholarship is paid for by the companies I do work experience with. So in a roundabout way, I get paid for working with big companies before I graduate. Yay employability!

The HSC is so overhyped. You need it to get a UAI, to get into uni. That's all. The knowledge itself comes second, as the gaping holes in the syllabuses show.

The entrance score for my degree is ridiculously low, considering how technical it is, so I was never worried about not reaching it. What I *did* have as incentive was getting a higher score to meet the cutoff for the scholarship.

In the end, decide what you want to do, and what you need to get there. But regardless, you can only be shooting yourself in the foot by bludging.

Steph: it depends on the degree. Typical engineering degrees are 4, and medicine/law are usually only offered as postgraduate degrees, making the entire thing ~7 years. Mine is 5, because of the extra work experience time. [EDIT: Plus what Kylie said.]

Kylie eats dugong for tea

we have an honors college here, where you have to earn a set amount of honors credit every year (extra papers or projects or whatever) and then cap it off with a senior thesis. gross.

I was in it freshman year, but then I was like... wait... an honors designation won't add a whole lot to a BFA degree.

here's the primary requirement for acceptance to Arizona State: a pulse.
but, I have to apply for the "professional" program in drawing next semester, submitting a portfolio and artist statement and junk. being an art student makes my brain hurt sometimes.

maybe I should just resurrect the 'university' thread.

Aaron
10-19-2006, 05:07 PM
My understanding is that it means first year student. Some of my friends who live at a residential college on campus refer to 'freshers' as being the newbies. Mostly an American term, I think.

Colezy
10-19-2006, 05:08 PM

Steph Format

1st year - freshman
2nd - sophomore (my current year in college)
3rd - junior
4th - senior

this applies to both college and high school. we're definitely more likely to say "sophomore" than "10th grader"

y si Kylie, me gustan los estudios de universidad tambien.

Yes Glenn. But we get no any knowledge when we end our studying. We have high grade dyploma but we are dumbheads! All that you need when you young and studying in univercity be able to do a one or two things, perhaps , then find a place where you can do those things and get a money for that works. But of course we have hard exams and people who studying well, but it's only in capital because here are much work. For example - our elder cousin graduated physics after 5 years studying in univercity, now he sells car paints on car spare parts market. Our cousin - sister also graduated physics and now she working in placement service and get second hihg graduation in that area of study. Our best friend Ludka have graduated organic chemistry and now shi sells an aeroplane ticket in Chernictsy airplane company. Ludka's husband who ended post-graduate course now working in furniture office, he gathering cupboards.

It went ok, some of the questions were worded a bit funnily, but you always get that with exams, I guess. There was one question that was worth 13 points and I'll be lucky to get 2 points from it! :p Oh well. The rest wasn't too bad and my internal marks are pretty good, so I'm happy! :)

We got to keep the question booklet and when I looked at it on the bus on the way home, I remembered some of the stuff that I couldn't at the time of actually doing it. Meh.

I have my first exam tomorrow. POLITICS. And it's my year 12 subject so I'd say it's fair important. Which explains why I'm sitting on the forum and myspace on my study day.

But seriously, if I hear anything else about like...Australian Foreign Policy, I am going to hit someone. In one of my SACs I wrote "China" instead of my name. And I once wrote "end of the world" (TLE!) instead of "end of the war".

And then after tomorrow, I have 3 exams in two days. But they're year 11 so they don't mean much.

Methods (which I'm not even going to study for. I hate maths, I'm gonna fail, and I'm not even doing methods next year)
Biology (worst decision I ever made school-wise)
English (I always do well in it, and I only have to memorise a couple of Macbeth quotes)

Then the week after I have Legal and HHD. Those shouldn't be too bad.

.........holiday :) please? PLEASE???!!

When I did VCE we had to put down our names and our student numbers. If an examiner knew someone taking a VCE exam they had to say who the were and what class/school they were in so then they wouldn't get that persons exam.

On a major sidenote, today was my last ever day of school! YAY for me! But a bit sad aswell for obvious reasons, especially when you've been associated with the school and teachers and friends and all that jazz for the past 7 years of your life. Albeit not as sad as i thought it would be, although a couple of the guys broke down, which i found very weird. Did the whole write your last words on your school shirt thing aswell, my shirt is pretty much a piece of black vivid. I feel so relieved and free at the moment. I'm quite excited about what the future holds, but yeah....Exams for the next 2 weeks and then yeah i'm fully done with it, so i won't get too ahead of myself just yet. BUT FUCK YEAH! CAN'T HELP BUT FEEL THAT LIFE TRUELY STARTS NOW.

I have two days to go - tomorrow we've got a big thing with the Fire Brigade - road safety and stuff, and then Friday is it ... *sigh* It's going to be sad!!

We had our Speech Night last night - it was so sad at the end. The Year 12's all process out (up the stairs and stuff) and the minute we got out the doors it was just this mass of screaming and crying. I hugged so many teachers and people haha!!

Marv From NZ
11-15-2006, 10:35 AM
I hugged my teachers aswell, and they wrote on my shirt aswell. At Prizegiving last night, my best friend who is headboy of the school gave a pretty emotional speech. Alot of I love you's and thank you's to alot of people and all that shit, i thought he'd break down for a second. LOL mass screaming and crying! None of that shit at my school, but then again it is an all boys school and we do hold shit in to try and look tough, so i'm pretty sure if the chance ever came to breakdown, some of the boys would've. I got History, Geography and English exams which spread out until the 24th of this month and then December the 6th, the yeargroup has Leavers dinner at Eden Park, so December the 6th is realistically the last ever time i'll see my teachers, class mates and stuff.

Is that the same or seperate from the TER?

TER=Tertiary Entrance Rank, and it's the score you get out of 100 (although 99.7 or something is the highest you can get), and all the super nerds get 99's.

I was allowed to have barley sugars but they had to be unwraped already, i think. Or you could have a small tub of jelly-like lollies or something..maybe that was only at out internal mid year exams though.
Our rules for drink bottles were no wrapping only. Didn't matter about the lid.

We're allowed to bring in a drink bottle, except it has to be clear and have a clear liquid inside e.g. vodka

Why didn't I think of that?

my first exam's on the 2nd... woooo can't wait for 4 essays in 3 hours.
*BARF*
Everyone seems to go loopy around exams time... parents, friends.... not the teachers, no... they seem to get increasingly more relaxed... THE END IS NIGH!

Heh James is doing the HSC now. I laugh at him. He's halfway.

I reckon what I did in year 12 (QLD in general I guess) was harder. We had the QCS plus, at my school anyway, we had major exams at the end of every semester of both year 11 and 12 plus minor exams at the end of terms 1 and 3 of year 11 and 12. So 8 lots of exams plus the QCS.

I'm not sure about harder but I think maybe its a less effective way to test people, mostly because the scores are averaged out across all that time and people can really improve by the end, but it doesn't count as much as it could in other states.

The whole QCS thing can be really unfair as well. I don't think the QCS works that well as a scaling thing - if a school does tonnes of QCS practices then it can really skew the result.

We had loads of practice. We had a practice test every term from Term 4 of Year 11 through til the real exam. Plus we had 1 hour a week of learning the strategies etc.

Gah, two weeks before exams (Yr 11) and I have to prove I can pass methods and chem which I've been winging all year...but seriously, like I had a choice- I need about an extra 10 hours a day to get all the work done alone...let alone revision.

Anyway, main aim is a 40+ on Further Maths, pretty standard I guess but I'd better be sure I know everything.
Apart from that, I just found out that I've got 3 exams on one day- two are language. Latin I should revise for, French (why I did it this year I still don't know) I'm giving up anyway so w/e, and Art-Painting, which I scored 96% on the mid-year. So no probs there.

Gah, these coming weeks are gonna frustrate the crap outta me. :(

I'm doing Look Both Ways and The Kite Runner. I'm extremely unprepared, yet not all that worried for some strange reason. I haven't read Kite Runner! I think it'll go ok though. English is kinda good to bullshit with.

2 more weeks and I'm finished completely! My last is on the 14th.

I will tell you now Riss, at least memorise 2 or 3 direct quotes and what happens fairly thoroughly otherwise you're rooted because if you waffle on about the book in general you fail horribly (well not fail, but you won't get a good mark)

Umb... it mite be, your call though obviously. A friend of mine is doing the issue of whether graffiti is art or vandalism... I'm studying two different controversial religious artworks. Our class also looked at a piece that was shown in a sydney public gallery that depicted oral sex. hmm actually not very exiting, more grose than anything i found.

in victoria, study scores for each subject is out of 50. generally to get an enter of above 90 (which means you'd be in the top 10% of the state give or take) you need about an average of 39, mind you this was last year and it changes every year.
