Use this thread to talk about tertiary education of various kinds, obviously.

very nice.
so yeah, my second year of college is well underway. it's a lot better now that I'm taking more intensive studios.
I might not be doing something "useful" (science/engineering), something that shows high mental capacity (most humanities), something selfless (social work), or something that will get me six figures out of the gate so I can afford be a giant tool all through undergrad (business).
but dammit if I can't school them all at painting.

I guess you can argue that social workers do selfless work sometimes but they are definitely not selfless people.
I'm about to wrap up something similar to social work and here's an example
Last semester we had a class that had tutes that were available on thursdays and fridays. Most people picked one of the thursday tutes for whatever reason but we got into the lecture and there was one person who was too late and had to do a friday tute, but she needed to change to a thursday tute because that was the only day she could get childcare.
So the lecturer asked if there was anyone who would like to change. Nobody would. They sat there for about half an hour and still nobody wanted to change (the people in the friday tute went outside for a break...i was in the friday one)
Eventually she gave up and still nobody changed so I dont know what happened after that!
So in conclusion: social workers and people in that general profession are just as selfish as everyone else!

ooh, ouch. that's good to know, I guess?
there's a surprising amount of over-25 people in my painting studio, and one of them brought his little boy to class today. the kid was set up with paints and everything, and the prof even walked by to hold his board up and say "THIS IS WHAT ART LOOKS LIKE". it was cute.
with art everyone kinda assumes that you're self absorbed to begin with, and I can't say that I fight this assumption in any way.

Well - regarding uni - everyone's uni applications are in now (due September 29th) so now we sit back and wait and do exams ....

Last year of school this year for me :) Exams start on the 13th Nov and then it's THE END!! :D hehe
I'm having a year off next year to save up and then moving away for Uni at the start of 2008 to do Human Movement. Still need to apply for the scholarships though.
I'm beginning to look at the application process and all the stuff I've got to sort out for my uni/tafe place. Photography or visual arts is looking the likely subject choice, and Melbourne is the place I'm looking at.
I don't study for anything! wahey!
it was definitely obvious when I got my HSC results back. See you later, uni.
Im in tafe now and im doing at cert 2 in visual arts, possibly the laziest and easiest class I've ever done. no theory, no grading, the whole thing is pass or fail. I'm heaps into it, but I've been thrown in the deep end a little because the cert 2 class began in semester 2, meaning we missed a lot of basic drawing stuff that was taught at the beginning of the year. I've never painted with oils before so its nice to try that out, too. But I don't think I'll ever do it outside of tafe, it just takes sooo much time. I can't bear the thought of spending a whole day getting my paint ready, mixing my colours, breathing in turps fumes the entire time and painting some shit that takes weeks to dry.
My drawing has come along a lot, especially with portraits, but i clash with the teacher so that sucks. and printmaking is okay but its just so much like high school, the teacher was a high school teacher for a while there and shes just...i dunno.

I'm almost done with first year of my bachelor of Communication Design, which is just fancy talk for Graphic Design. We have four classes each semester, which only adds up to about a 16 hour contact week including lectures. Not bad.
An annoying thing though with some of our subjects is that they're mixed with other sorts of design students, such as Interior or Multimedia design students, so not all classes focus specifically on Communication design. Next year however, all design students will only be doing subjects specific to their unit of study.
My favourite sort of project is creating 2D sorta junk, like postcards or posters, which is done in a number of our classes.
We also learn about web design, typography, working with 2D, and a bit of model making, which I loathe. That particular class is a joke and I can't wait to be done with it. All Comunication design students hate that class.
Here's some junk I've done so far this year if anyone cares.
Set of four related postcards including a word and image. It had to all be done by hand, no computer, which meant we got to fingerpaint and draw stuff with our eyes closed and stuff, as you do in university: (I put them against a black backdrop when I uploaded them onto the internet cos they're white. I know it looks cheap)
Click (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/brookadeedoo/finalpostcards.png)
Poster promoting an event that had to do with a given decade (I got 1920-1930). I chose Jazz. We were not to include imagery, the type had to in effect BE the imagery:
Click (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/brookadeedoo/jazzamatazz7.png)
Poster promoting a made-up event that involves an Australian designer of our choice:
Click (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/brookadeedoo/looking.png)
I have tonnes of other stuff but those are a few of the most recent.
Anyway there's Communication Design for you.
i wen tot uni and studied Fine Arts (majoring in photomedia) at COFA (part of UNSW)
the assessments were annoying but uni in general was the best time of my life (thus far)
my personal favourite bit was the "teaching you to think differently" part of my time there.
i also found out a lot about myself during that time - i know, that's kinda cliche but 17 - 21 are quite formative years in one's life and having to do a lot more for myself (i was away from home when i was at uni) well... it kinda makes you realise what can be achieved...
i'm all for uni, and for TAFE - i would like to do another course of some description in the near future 'cause i quite like learning...
and now that i've prattled on on a vaguely relavent tangent for X number of characters i shall finish...
*M!

I'm studying economics, with a probable major in accounting and economic policy (first year) at the enormous, gigantic, Burnie campus of the University of Tasmania. I actually had a lecture this semester where I was the only student. No joke.

I actually had a lecture this semester where I was the only student. No joke. One networking subject I did at Uni, we ended up with only about 8 of us turning up every week. People were scared of the lecturer because he'd always ask the students questions and get them to come up the front and write stuff on the board.

Whoa, I wouldn't go either. :|
I miss teeny class sizes, though. My High School Physics class has 9 people in it, it was awesome. Then Bio at Uni had 1200 students in it. So daunting for someone as socially retarded as I am.
I definitely DONT miss teeny classsss sizes.
the smallest class I had was y modfern history class, with only 5 of us in it. 2 girls who the teacher abused constsantly and me and then teo boys.
teacher didnt pick on my cause heknew i wouldnt take his crap. hes a fucking asshole and has been in loads of trouble before, and will certainly be in trouble again. i hate that guy so hard. he failed me constantly all through year 11 and 12, yet in my hsc i gave the same answers and got about 95% or something. fucking cunt. drag my UAI down, will ya?
i mean, sure, im pretty drunk now, but that doesnt mean i wont hate this guy as much tomorrow mornign as i do right now. i hate that guy.

1200 is an INSANE amount of people.
smaller classes = worst thing ever for art history. the smaller the class, the more likely it is to be a crappy intensive paper writing class :(
yeah, it is true that in a larger class size you dont seem to do as much actual work as you do in a smaller one

Good point.

my boyfriends drama class had about 6 in it, I think. it made it almost impossible for them to get their group project done because two of the girls never showed up (and were made to repeat the year anyway), and another guy left the class and another girl started missing classes really really frequently toward the end of the term. They ended up completely re-writing their group performance on the day it was due to be examined, and just improvised the whole thing. I dunno how they scored with it, but props to them for managing to do it.

We've been through 3 drama teachers - one got fired, one left after his improper relations with a student and now we've got a current one who studied at NIDA with Mel Gibson. She's had her work cut out but she's brilliant.
hehe, i think one of my mates teacher's at his tafe course used to do NIDA with mel gibson too. that guy must be a slut or something. or maybe its just what people from NIDA say to sound more impressive when they start a teaching job?

i never did drama in high school but the teacher there got fired cause he was turing up to his classes stoned, and one other teacher that was there got in the shit for staring at girls boobs and clevages....God knows wats going on there now. i finished in 2004. Now im at the last part of my tafe course, Im doing the Diploma of chns services. IMMM sooooooooo over it. and im on my final placement where i have to take over the babies room for 2weeks and plan for it. ITs so fucking hard. It goes for 5weeks, ive just finished two. I dont know how im gonna cope in the next 3 weeks. but i guess in my last week i get melb cup day and oaks day off. so it shortens the week a bit. I havent applied for anything for next year cause i dont hav a clue of what i want to do. i thought of doing some music things but they all seem to require folios and crap, which i hav none of and no experience
i'm not doing my VCE's yet, but the VCE drama class this year has about 15-20 students in it
i'm doing VCE drama next year in year 10, what do you have to do in it?

Our school was probably too small to have a drama class, so all our drama was done after school, giving up your own time and all that jazz, all year levels were allowed to participate. My year level would have been able to get a drama class going, we had heaps in it, but others years only had a few interested, some had none. I liked it that way, though, because otherwise it was hard to interact with other year levels. It was great when you were just starting school, too, because you got to know others really quickly and felt secure in being able to make friends with the veterans of the school.
Our director's only claim to fame was working as an extra in Neighbours a few times and working with Rove. Ooh, and he shared the same name as a famous person; Paul Hogan.
I miss drama more than anything else in High School.

One left for me! :)
Does your uni let you guys have like a week or so break between the end of classes and when the exam period starts?
Because some uni's (ie. Monash) don't and the exams start a few days after classes end, which is kinda shitful actually.

Yeah we had about a week off before start of exam period. But it's just dragging on. I think our semester started a week later too.

I'd be really interested in studying that, one of my boyfriend's friends is at uni studying it, and he says its really good.
But maybe I can just arrange for my high school teacher to teach it to you, because he's pretty much the best man ever. And when he's sick, Mr Ward fills in for him, and he is a total babe.

so im going to have to wait next week to finish uni for this course because the exam on wendesday got pushed back which is kinda cool because it gives me to thursday to finish off this stupid essay I gotta do before I worry about any exam.
My course is just pass/fail, it rulz omg.
I have to hand in 3 completed paintings, one decent print, and a series of at least 3 drawings. Boogers!

Well I'm just about finished my course. Studying tourism, computing and business administration.
Started it the last week of the first term 2004 and should of had it all completed much sooner than this but eh it's free to do plus I like being a student.
Am working on some units for employment skills at the moment and doing this thing on fractions, decimals and percentages. Some of the fraction stuff is doing my head in - I hate maths.
Got an appointment tomorrow to talk about finding a job so won't be a student for much longer unfortunately. But I suppose I have to start work soon.

i overloaded this session and im paying the price, completed 1/5 classes, ill do an film essay tomorrow and another film essay on friday and will have completed and most likely passed 3/5 classes.
the other two are psych and im pretty sure ill fail at lease one of them. through the combination of having a 5 night a week job, moving out and going through a breakup of a 2 year relationship, if i do mangae to pass them all, i will do something damn special to celebrate :D

Lame. I have to do two essays that will end up around 5000-6000 words each. I typed them in about 2 days each. I had one assignment exceed 80 pages once, and my full year group project's final report exceeded 200 pages or something.

at unsw every course besides one is theory.
film theory is great to experience films you might not have ever seen, but you dont learn much if you want to go into film making.

I've finally made my decision and i'm going to take a 12 month break next year and get back to my Bachelor of Communication studies degree in Feb 2008(I rejected my conditional acceptance into the course today! YIKES!!!! But they said there will keep my details handy and such, so that when i inform them next year, i'll be guaranteed of my spot.) all refreshed and wanting to study again, which doesn't mean i'll be a bum, i'm going to be working basically all of next year so i can save up for my studies, that way i won't have to get such a big fat student loan out. I hate debt with a passion you see. Also if i have enough money saved, i'll be treating myself to a holiday or a new car, so realistically all's not bad in my camp.

All the best with that Marv. I feel like taking a year off now but probably shouldn't because it may affect my chances at getting a job. I wish I started travelling overseas during my Uni breaks earlier :(
i didn't even think of travelling when i was at uni - i wanted to get it all over and done with!
i'm stupid i think 'cause now that i'm not at uni i realised how much i loved it!
i'd like to go back there now - and then go over seas to do part of my degree 'cause everyone i was really good friends with at college was from OS!

I think after college, I'm going to apply for some sort of fancy work visa (or just get paid under the table ;)) and work/travel overseas for a few months or so. even if it's just at a Starbucks, it's all good.

I find that slightly insulting as red wine is truly the nectar of the gods. You just gotta know what bottles to buy and have a mature enough pallete to handle it. Most people who dont like wine haven't developed their pallete for it. And we certainly don't guzzle the wine for the alcohol.
Having said that, non alcoholic wine is bullshit, so dont be twee and say "if you dont care about alcohol drink the non alcoholic version".

Sucker... we get our own individual little glasses for ours.

The problem with goon is that it comes out of a bladder and a cardboard box. The wine is sometimes ok depending on what you get. However, drinking a wine out of a bottle allows you to have this snobbery attached to your drinking. I like this said snobbery and looking down at people drinking from their pathetic little bags.
goon from a cup means you think you're classy
i personally liked this TV show's take on the goon bag
what you do is:
open the back of a poor defensless teddy bear
remove the stuffing
cut a hole between it's legs for the goon bag pourer bit to go though
put in a zip so that you can do the teddy up again
chuck in a chilled goon bag
throw in some of those styrene ball thingers like in bean bags
zip up teddy
drink
it kinda looks like you're giving an inanimate object head but *shrugs* a good goon carrier is worth it's weight in... toenail clippings!

to avoid the harsh lines of cardboard see my previous post...

Sorry, this reminds me of Wayne's World. I can't help myself.
Cassandra: I don't believe I've ever had French champagne before...
Benjamin: Oh, actually all champagne is French, it's named after the region. Otherwise it's sparkling white wine. Americans of course don't recognize the convention, so it becomes that thing of calling all of their sparkling white "champagne", even though by definition they're not.
Wayne: Ah yes, it's a lot like "Star Trek: The Next Generation". In many ways it's superior but will never be as recognized as the original.

I'd say something about this topic veering off track (because it never EVER happens on the boards) but, nothing goes hand in hand quite like college and alcohol.
this weekend some of us had a small 'Symposium', where we talked about literature and philosophy (we all took the same course covering the classics) and got trashed from red wine.
good times all around.
ah red wine and philosophy come hand in hand. I drank beer and didn't study philosophy :)

usually I prefer liquor, it tends to be the more cost-effective option.
most of my classmates in the school of art seem to prefer bong rips, though.
hooray stereotypes coming to life!
I cant stand being stoned. I got stoned accidentally a while back from eating cookie-mix that was a LOT stronger than I'd thought. I only had a finger-szed taste of the mixture, and I pretty much greened out.
I stick to drinking, but i think what I really should be doing is getting myself a valium prescription. that would be so good.

especially when they are acid virgins! its the best ever cause they just talk and talk.. my boyfriend had a party where there was some acid going around and it was, i dont know, bad or something, so everyone there went kind of crazy. I even got a little second-hand dose by accident and I started to go a little crazy! it was one mental, mental party. fifteen acres of bush filled with maybe a hundred people tripping off their dial. ew.
And, on topic oh em gee, i handed in all my tafe shit today. Tertiary education aimed more at trade-type jobs. And costs similar to public high schools.
similar to high school my ass.
my art course at TAFE cost more than my entire school fees for year twelve.
And yeah, marv, TAFE is kind of the losers version of uni. the courses offered are often more practical, or like cam said, trade and industry based. Like the main difference between studying art at uni and studying art at tafe is that at tafe, I dont do any theory. (and the teachers arent wankers)

And these two were the hardest mother fuckers to carve. Earlier in the semester we started an Artist's book, and mine involved a lot of turps release from drawings I'd done. Then the teacher asked us to do some Lino prints using images from our artists book. So I had to carve one out in positive and one out in negative, and it took forever and gave me awful callouses. But at least they were better than the stuff that the cranky old menopausal woman does.

Those are all really bad, out of focus photographs, but the digital camera has been misbehaving.

aw, pretty! I really like the colors in the oil painting. the prints turned out nicely too, very clean. sucks you had to carve two lino blocks of basically the same image.
I swear, every class has a token old person (over 40). they're often giant kiss-asses and god damn if they don't produce some crappy artwork.
I was the youngest, then there were about 3 other guys who were in their twenties, and everyone else in the class was over 35. There was even some old chief who was about 65.
But yeah, this one woman, she just looked down on me for no reason other than my age, and everything she did was about muslim women and the only colour she ever wore was that stupid menopause mauve.
She didnt shave her armpits or her legs, and she was a rather hairy woman, and she just.. ugh, she pissed me off so hard.
She would use up the expensive $5-a-sheet paper like it was nothing, hog the press, hog the prep tables, and then whenever I'd use the fucking presses she'd feel like she had to monitor whatever I was doing.. I wanted to sabotage her crap so bad.

So guys, what's cracking in your university life?
Today i had orientation and it was solid'ly fun, although it did get weird in some parts. It was nice to be in a new enviroment for once, meet new faces, get with the same faces, if you know what i mean. But yeah, through our BCS briefing, i could already tell that there were some real "cowboys" in my class, it kinda reminded me too much of high school listening to some of the stupid questions lol. But apart from that, it was very fun and enticing, there were so many HOT GIRLS it wasn't funny, it was awesome, and in my class there's only like 40 of us guys to about 90 good looking girls. FUN. During the afternoon break entertainment thinggy, there was this Zulu Africian dance off comp, it was real funny, and then later they had this brazilian dance comp and the chicks all had fat arses and wore highlighter coloured g-strings, was kinda cool, and then there was this clown guy who asked me these stupid questions..."How do you comuunicate in communication studies?" *me and my chick friends, being real puzzled* *sarcastically* "Paper?" ..."GOOD ANSWER!" *hands us these little stickers for kids.". OK...

I have an Academic Preparation thing this Saturday. No idea what that means but I have to go haha!
Orientation week starts on the 21st and then most classes start on the 26th.
I registered for my tutorials today. I think I did it right. Here's hoping! Does it sound right if I have one lecture and one tutorial per subject/unit thing?

Haha I actually think this is the first time I've dare venture into this thread
Probably put off by all you people wanting to go to Uni and the like :p
I'm doing a cert IV in costume design now.
The tafe is out of town and costs me like nearly $25 a week in bus fare for just three days of tafe.

Yeah sounds right Caity. I got sorta the same deal basically. My days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I'm at uni for only two lectures a day, which are each 2 hours long, plus i'll have tutorials and stuff, which is stock really. Only gutting thing is that my Mondays and Tuesdays begin with lectures at 8 in the bloody morning! Means i'll have to get up around 6'o clock in the am, and catch the real early bus or train into town. O well, at least i'm not a bum or still in high school!
8am-7pm Tuesday! YIKES! That's real intense, but my programme leader said it happens to some people, the whole 5 hour break thing in between lectures. It sounds real stupid but at AUT (My uni), they have all these mean rumpus rooms set-up for students who have to wait for lectures. It's not bad at all. And then there's the bars and stuff in the student plaza.

I'll say it again, I wish there was a such thing as an on-campus bar. wouldn't I like to catch a drink before a studio.

Maybe.. but driving without power steering isn't hard. I learnt to drive with unpowered steering and unpowered disc brakes.

Man that was noisy.
It also had a rediculously heavy clutch and a gear stick that kept jamming when you went from second to third
