Those smelly guitar players have their own thread, so damn it all, We'll have ours! I was going to make a poll on who plays Bass Guitar, who plays Double Bass and who plays both. But this new forum seems far too complicated. Instead we can just post what we play. Personally, I play both BG and DB.

I love DB, but unfortunately my screwy wrists make it impossible for me to play DB for more than a few seconds. It makes me sad, so I play guitar as it doesn't put as much strain on my arm...
*goes to the guitar thread* :P

I also play both bass guitar and double bass, bass guitar for about a year and double bass for a couple of months. :)

I'd love to learn the double bass but i reckon it would be too hard for me as it is fretless and i wouldnt be able to slap it fast enough

Bec

It's not that hard, just takes practice.
Not that I can really do it very well at all, but I'm getting there.
If you'd love to learn it then learn it! If you're unsure, maybe hire a double bass first rather than buying.

Double bass'd be codsarn awesome! Anyone feel like lending me a couple of thousand dollars though? I play a vintage 60's no brand base named Reggie :)
Me and friends were talking to Captain Reckless from Zombie Ghost Train about his double bass and he was telling us that he actually found a double bass in America for $1000 so he booked a return flight over there and came back with the bass. Bet he flew back in the bass case, he's that small :D

I just play the normal 4 string bass. I'd like to play a 5 string, just need the money to buy one.

I'm trying to organise through my school to play the DB, hopefully the school can come through on something. It's an instrument I really want to learn how to play.

*bump*

I play bass. I'd absolutely love to get myself a double bass but funds are a MAJOR issue.

I just decided I wanted one a few years ago and put together what little money I had with some birthday money and bought myself a second hand epiphone explorer, 4 string, and an old amp and taught myself. Still rocking out on the same gear today, but the age is CERTAINLY showing.

My high school had a double bass when I was there... I guess it still is.
I used to play the violin and the bass lived in one of the violin practice rooms. I was always so, so tempted to play it, that on the last music lesson of grade 8, my friend played the paino really loudly as I gave the bass a try! It was a big no-no to play it, but I couldnt help myself! :p It didn't go to well though cause I was too short! lol

Wow, that bass looks awesome! Great job designing it.
I'm jealous.

And you don't need tank hands to play bass properly, but it'd probably help. I have really small hands and I'm alright.

Listen to some Red Hot Chili Peppers - Flea is one of the more well-known electric slap players.

I too play bass, because that is what awesome people like me do. :p Except, I'm not awesome enough to play upright. I borrowed one once, but I didn't know where to start and I didn't want to just jump straight in with the wrong technique and screw up my hands and get into bad habits. So long story short I'm an electric player! :)

This is my bass:

haha that's exactly what I did when I went out and bought my bass. For the first year or so, I played almost entirely picking with my thumb. It went ok, but I'm mostly fingers now.

Being second hand and having seen a lot of use mine isn't quite so nice as that anymore, but not tooooo far off it...

I started playing BG 2 years ago. I bought a second hand 4 string Ibanez SR800. It plays very nice and sound pretty good. I want to play DB but I'm spending all my money on a BG I'm building my self. Check it out at http://carl.amplivibe.com

Bass isn't my main instrument but I like to think I'm pretty compitent on both kinds. My brother plays double bass though, I think he's been playing for about 3 years? He's fucking amazing. I'd even go as far as to say, when he cuts sick he's one of the best I've ever seen. And his Bass is black and shiny :)

WHITE FALCON

i just learnt to slapy the bass the other day. i can do those "dooka-a-dee-dook" slaps pretty much everytime.

Bec
02-06-2007, 05:24 PM
Fun, isn't it? :D

Now learn hellbound! It's great! Not that I can play it up to speed yet but it's getting there..

Anybody got some recommendation of some good bass solos or bass lines that aren't too repetitive (double or guitar)? I'm gonna need to play a heap of solo stuff for music this year so I should probably get started now.

hahaha your kidding right. can you do those gallop slaps? but yeh my bass player can play it on normal bass guitar :)

i love slapping that mother fucker! its fun as but my finger gets sore after a while!

Bec
02-06-2007, 06:11 PM
Nope, I'm not kidding and yeah, I can, but I'm definately no expert. My biggest problem is probably not always hitting hard enough to get a really good click sound.
My best advice is just to start slowly, preferably with a metranome to make sure you stay in time, and gradually build up to a higher speed. And if you're trying to learn a song just go over short sections at a time until you get them right.

I actually find gallop slaps easier than just the double ones or whatever the proper term for it is... not sure why but I just can't get the hang of them.

Your fingers will eventually callus. I haven't had a blister in quite a while now :D
