View Full Version : Music Genres
We were having a discussion about favorite music genres tonight on my radio show, mainly because I was talking about the Snoop Dogg / Ice Cube tour that was coming up in Oct/Nov.
One girl rang up and said I had sold out, cashing in on the whole Snoop's allowed back in the country, so I gotta go check the show out just incase he gets banned again bandwagon.
Mind you, I've been quite partial to the Snoop-a-loop ever since I heard his (Who Am I) What's My Name track back in the day and not to mention I own (not downloaded) 5 of his albums, and 2 of his greatest hits. and having seen him live twice now.
On the other hand, some guy rang and applauded my efforts into checking out different music genres other than the ones I usually play on my show. (little did he know I;m also the presenter of a 90min dance music program. I just don't use my voice. Microsoft Sam does the speaking for me!)
So that raised the question:
Do you listen to anything out of your favorite music genre? (eg. If your favorite genre was Alternative, would you listen to something from say Hilltop Hoods or Daft Punk?)

haha, I started looking at my cds and writing a reply, but half way through realised I didn't have a typical genre I listen to. The day before yesterday I was listening to Metallica, MGF and TLE, yesterday I was listening to The Streets and GNR, today I'm listening to Gwen Stefani and I'm eyeing off Transvision Vamp as the next one to stick in.
Oh wait, I've got it - Country! I'm partial to a bit of Dan Brodie and Garth Brooks, but can't stand any other country (...what's Cash go under?)

i listen to Kanye... i really like him, it's better than listenin to someone bang on about bitchez and hoez and cappin cops or whatever. Mind you i often pump out Dre and Snoop's 'Still Dre' which is an awesome song (for those who don't know it, it's played on Training Day when Jake meets Alonso at the start and they're driving... wicked beat) as well as Cypress Hill - Rock Superstar (also from Training Day when Hoyt and Alonso go to Chino)
Some RnB is ok... but i really only have about 5 songs. Real big fan of house/electro, Ministry, One Love kinda start... Deadmau5 is one of my favourite new artists, also Justice and a bit of MSTRKRFT

I don't own anything out of my favoured music style, although i listen to whatever is playing if i don't have a choice.

people who only or mostly listen to one style of music are boring, obsessive and annoying.

Balkan gypsy folk and electronic tango for the win.
that question seems a bit silly to me. I mean why limit myself to just one style of music. thats boring and I love music too much to do that. Metal - Swing - Reggae - Rock n Roll - Punk - heaps more. I love experiencing different stuff (that i like lol). I do not like trance and house and shit like that. I will admit to liking the occasional hip hop song, and rarely a rap song but there are still some. Oh I forgot to add, I do not like pop like none of the neighbours people, no spice girls, no boybands (except I new kids on the block lol they were too cool) and like all these teen idol like jonas brothers and miley cyrus and kelly clarkson shit and stuff like that like the majority of stuff on commercial radio like nova and today fm and also alot of 'indie' stuff is ultra boring, like indie can mean alot of things but like for example i mean stuff like all the bands that have supported TLE recently heh. and I do like country :p

I forgot to add. I dont like some 'world' music. lulz

People don't understand it, but I really happen to dig most things. Except maybe some reggae, some country & western, and some metal.
Besides the usual rock/alternative stuff (ie metal, indie, rockabilly et al), I love pop (including top 40 radio stuff), some electro/house tunes, blues, big band and swing type stuff. Some classical.
My niche is probably oldies though. And I don't just mean that trendy, socially acceptable stuff like The Beatles and The Doors (and people like Buddy Holly among you TLE folk). I love doowop, motown, 60s girl groups, the crooners, daggy grandma pop.
My folks love it because we can actually enjoy the same music in the car :p

My childhood music knowledge was brought up on Gold 104.3, lol :D
Long car trips to Melbourne and back introduced me to songs like Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street (loved since I was about 7, heh) and generally the hits of 60-90's that you usually hear on Gold.
I'd say my preferred genre would be based on rock though, but yeh I branch out a decent bit, nothing really set (Daft Punk surprised me when I first heard 'Around the World' and got into their stuff, for example)
Still I'd admit to having a relatively restricted sense for music, which I've been trying to improve upon over the last while...giving Nick Cave a better run; also into Hendrix at the moment...and right now I'm listening to The Loved Ones so eh. My 'genre' could thus be classified as...whatever I like to listen to, heh.

I listen to stuff from all spectrums...it drives alot of my friends mad actually. But yeah, certain rap and stuff is a bit shit, as is most dance stuff unless it's a cover of an old pop song.
I had a "gangsta rap" phase during early highschool so i too like alot of Snoop's old stuff, a bit of Dre, Eazy E, Ice Cube.
Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince / Will Smith are my favorite RnB artists of all time.
Soo many good songs.
And not to mention I can sing the entire Fresh Prince theme (not the edited version).

Reggae -
Do you like reggaeton? I love reggaeton so much right now. Everyone should listen to reggaeton and shake booties.

I like it a little bit. It's fun to dance to and I don't usually turn it off if I hear it on the community radio station that plays all that sort off stuff around here heh  I wouldn't listen to it all the time though.

I'd probably go crazy if I had to listen to it all the time too but its the best music for dancing around the house when nobody is around.

Let's face it, who can't?
I've got Code Red and the Greatest Hits somewhere around here...
Over the last 6 months or so I've started to expand my musical pallette significantly. I used to live in tunnel vision of Psychobilly and Rockabilly +TLE style (undefinable...) stuff being the only shit I'd listen to.
But now I've started to get into 1970s/80s punk and hardcore (think; bad brains, reagan youth, gorilla biscuits <I fucken love youth crew hardcore!>, suicidal tendencies <only the early stuff>, etc.) as well as some newer australian hardcore (50 Lions, Jonny United, etc.)
On top of that I've even gotten into some electronic stuff - mainly hard trance/hardstyle/darkcore.
Expand your mind, squares.
...
also, I've always liked oldies such as pink floyd, dire straits, the doors, etc.

My favourite Genre is Metal. So obviously I do listen to stuff outside of Metal because TLE are not metal.
I got so many favourite Metal bands.

TLE are SO metal.
They're just more like tin foil than cast iron.
