Hey guys. We have a friend from Aussie at our job place. He works in Moscow office of our company, but will visit our ukrainian office soon. We talk alittle bit and impressed him buy our knowledge about aussie life. Of course we know alot from this board and TLE DVD's. Now he try to make a hard question to us. So help us.

First : what are 4 and 20 pies, big M, and beetroot hamburgers?

second : he's from Sydney. Tell us something special about Sydney sitizens whish hard to get to know if you don't live there.

Anyway we really interesting in Australia, so it will be nice to know something more!

4 and 20 is a brand name. They make meat pies. Big M is a brand name. They make chocolate milk. Beetroot hamburgers are just hamburgers, with beetroot on them. But not a shitty hambuger from a fast food joint. A real hamburger made at a BBQ. The beetroot completes the burger.

I have nothing nice to say about Sydney citizens. Hope i helped.

haha, the only thing that sticks in my mind from both times I've been to Sydney is all the homeless people sleeping on the streets and in the parks and everywhere....I'm sure someone has a better story!! :p

funfact: you know how in sydney (king street?0) there are a whole lot of people with signs begging? Well, the reason for that is that nsw doesn't have begging laws, whereas qld and vic do. (dont know about other states) People have actually been prosecuted in qld for it, too.

back to the topic: sydney has a harbour bridge and an opera house which are regarded as the main landmarks. It has a big harbour. It also has a gay pride
parade called the mardi gras and so I suppose it has lots of gay people, f'realz!

It was 'discovered' (sighted by white people) in 1770 by captain cook and in 1788 captain arthur phillip started bringing over criminals from england. A little while after that free settlers were allowed to get in on the action and its taken off from there.

Sydney is in the state of new south wales. Recently they've had a bit of trouble and so have a new premier and government, pretty much.

madtwins: do you guys speak russian as well as ukrainian? Which one is your first language? I was thinking about learning russian next year, even though it might be pretty difficult.

Four N Twenty pies are delicious.

I learned a lot by reading this (http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=billbrysonsunburnedcounlh0.jpg) book. This author turns his travels into books, and he's really good at it too. Also includes history, etc.

To Boom King: of course our first language is ukrainian, but because we born in USSR times we know russian very well. It still alot of it in media and TV. We also heared from differend foreign people that russain is difficult for them. But we think it's hard only in pronounsation not in words.

There is quite a rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney people are under a strange delusion that their city is better then Melbourne which obviously it is not :p

"Melbourne. Slightly less weird than Sydney."

Nah, really Melb's all good.
Can't remember much of Syd tbh...went up there a couple times when I was younger and then visited the airport in '06 (flight from Rome to Melb via HK and then Syd)...hey there's something. Sydney's airport is probably the 2nd worst (ie- most unorganised) I've been through (Heathrow still takes the cake imo)

Thats only because Sydney's airport actually has people in it. Unlike that country town of Melbourne. :p

I've lived in all of them. London is better!

psht. you all don't know what you are talking about :p sydney is great! we might have more weirdo's than melb, but your weirdo's are a lot more weird than ours so it makes up for the difference :p I found melbourne rather unusual... you guys have farms equal to where my house is from the city here! what the hell!!

anyway, sydney has the largest population of all the cities in australia (its like 4 and a quarter million people or somewhere near that), and is the most expensive to live too. it was the place where captain cook first landed on australian ground in 1770 at a place called kurnell in botany bay (he was probably drawn in by that weird smell there :p)

hmm... what else. we have a giant coat hanger in the middle of the harbour and an ugly swan that some danish guy decided to build where people can sing and stuff... the sydney swans live here too. they are cool

as for pies. mrs macs all the way :D

O rly? Well then mister in that case, I want to see your credentials!
'sides Melbourne has a- wait...I'm from Geelong...someone remind me why I'm defending Melb? In fact, Geelong WAS going to be Melbourne in the first place! Scamming everyone during the gold rush days, tsk tsk all you Melbournians!

Thats only because Sydney's airport actually has people in it. Unlike that country town of Melbourne. :p

I've lived in all of them. London is better!

If you're looking for a really good music scene, especially rockabilly and psychobilly then Melbourne IS the place.
We got the biggest Music scene in Australia.
Plus Melbourne is so much easier to get around.

Though I have hear people whinge that Melbourne has a bad lack of colour *shrugs*

Sydney is hard to get around.
At night time there are sooo many drunk people on the street.
Music scene ain't as good as Melbs.

melbourne's the easiest to navigate around... just a grid. simple. as opposed to sydney that's just one big heap of mess/rubbish.

Sammas II
09-30-2008, 09:20 PM
Idiots. Melburnians argue that Melbourne is easier to get around? Thats like a fish saying its easier to swim then fly.

private_eye
09-30-2008, 09:52 PM
Well, when you've got a straight city, eg. Melbourne or New York, as opposed to a big slab of concrete goin all over the shop, eg. Sydney or Brisbane... it's not hard to work out which would be easier to navigate.

I dunno bout street names in other places, but ours are in sync! well, some...

Neo
09-30-2008, 10:31 PM
I find Sydney easier to navigate, because the streets don't all look the same and run exactly parallel to each other. Or maybe Syd folk have better navigational skills :p

Sarah
09-30-2008, 10:43 PM
Well I'm pretty shit at navigating. Been to Melbourne I think 3 times. Got lost once. Been to Sydney 2 times. Got lost once. Been to Brisbane once. Got lost 0 times.

Both Melbourne and Sydney aren't that exciting if you ask me.

Pleace tell us how much is rent of 1 room apartment in Sydney and Melb?

It very much depends on which suburb said apartment is. Apartment on the beach on in the city are quite expensive.

Yeah, rental prices vary a lot depending on the areas of the city.

you might want to play around with http://www.realestate.com.auif you really want to find out more about prices.

here are some maps so you have a list of some suburbs.

(having these two maps is a bit deceptive as the melbourne one probably only has half the suburbs.)

http://www.arta.com.au/nswmaps/MAPS/sydney.gif

http://www.macfixit.com.au/images/map.gif

man, im a nerd. I have an overwhelming desire to search through realestate.com.au and find the average rental prices for each suburb and town in australia but I wont because that would take far too long.

I am guessing each place would have a more distinct culture than now, tasmania particularly because its an island. Queensland would be presently doing pretty well as its own country as we hog a fair bit of the minerals that are stolen from our queensland earth and we'd probably export them to the rest of these hypothetical countries. However, we'd probably get greedy and make it hella polluted and then we'd run out of stuff to export to the other australian countries, leaving us screwed.
