are the best thing that ever happened to me.....

So I FINALLY got around to ordering a set (along with a wiring harness) back in August. After shipping delays, getting fucked over by UPS and customs for outrageous taxation... I finally had to opportunity to install those mothers in my 5120... It took a lot of scraping, filing, soldering and yelling, but they're in, along with a new signpost pickguard, to give it the whole 6120 look.

The sounds are incredible.....

I'll try and post some pics and maybe even some sounds....

im very confused about these classics. expecialy since i heard chris's tenny with classic plus/classic pickups.... gah its a tough call.
i love the powertrons, but there are times where i wish they were a bit clearer and less mid-rangey.

Both are great pickups, I just found the Classics to be a bit more versatile when I compared two different guitars, one with Classics, one with PowerTrons.

It was pretty rough...

Fritz

how much did you get axed in customs ?

patty_ww
09-29-2008, 03:00 PM
$109CAD for Customs Fees, Brokerage Fees, UPS having to do "paper work" etc.

Mitch-PTV

you know your getting screwed over when you get hit with "paper work" fees.

how much did it cost you before they were sitting in your guitar?

patty_ww
09-29-2008, 03:29 PM
$420 for the pups, harness, and shipping. $109 in import fees. $30 for a new soldering iron, solder, and a file for the pickup cavities and switch/knob holes. and the pickguard was about $70 after shipping. So around $630..... But the guitar is a completely new beast now, new look, better sound, still cheaper than a 6120.

thats just rediculous..

UPS are shit a lot of the time, I hear. I haven't had to deal with them before though...yet.

Fed Ex, ftw.

OK, so i figured I go one step further and post a video rather than sound clips... I still have to edit it, but hopefully it'll be up within the next 24 hours....

Done.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrvxyW_O-v8

The video still doesn't do the guitar justice. The audio was great up until Adobe Audition decided it wanted to compress the crap out of the audio even before I converted it to mp3. Anyhou, you get the idea....

I'm willing to do more videos if anyone wants... Although I am strapped for time...

Hey Patty.. Just wondering if your holes lined up? I'm going to have to get some work done because they don't quite line up.. I would do it myself but don't trust my woodwork skills.

It's killing me at the moment.. The pickups are sitting there ready to go, but alas fuck all money in my account to pay a tech to do the job.. grr! payday hurry up!!!

just had first band prac with my newly installed TV Classics.. a whole new world really.. My guitar cuts through the band mix so well now.. and when i drop it onto the bridge pickup only and hit the boost on the fulltone.. Words cannot describe! haha

patty_ww

Yeah, I had to do some filing on the pickup cavity... And the holes for the pots with the new wiring harness. What did you end up doing?

wizard_23
02-03-2009, 08:23 AM
Didn't have to do any filing. And I left the stock harness in.. So just snipped the leads long, taped them to the body, took it to a techy and he soldered them together. Had to drill new holes as well, but it's all on secure now and sounds su-poib! They even handled a bit of Corona spillage on the weekend. :p

i watched that vid and :woot: !!!

i cant believe thats the same guitar as mine, sounds amazing!! that is the exact tone in my head pretty much, im not too keen on hacking into the wood on my guitar, so what do we suggest i do RE getting some effing TV Jones's?!!??!!

wizard_23
07-22-2009, 08:24 PM
I'd just recommend spending the cash and getting a set with the em2. It only cost me $150 to get a full set up, pickup installation, fret polish, fretboard buffery thingyma-jiggy and re-string for mine.. But if you've got the confidence i'm sure you could do a quick drill and solder yourself.

Joab
07-22-2009, 08:45 PM
haha confidence?? if i had any form of hands-on skills i wouldnt be in year 12 doing effing extention 2 english and hating life now would i? ;)

yeah i dunno, ive got a long time to decide, i dont even almost have the cash right now but yeah, ill take that on board.

hmm I'm considering a G5120, but what does it sound like with the stock stuff? obviously from that vid the TV classics make it sound eargasmic but I was wondering what one sounded like just straight from the store...

cheers!

the guitar is awesome for rock mate. you wont get the clarity that the TVs provide, but still a veerryy nice guitar :)

Very Gibson sounding straight out of the shop. Almost Les Paulish...

;)

hmm I've already got a gibson flying V, meaning a g5120 would be redundant right?

Not necessarily... It's got a lot of Gibson influence, as the pickups are very similar, but it still has the look of a Gretsch, and the hollowbody feel and resonance.

FlyingV

cheers for helping, hopefully I can play one soon.

it definately wont make a gretsch redundant. not by any means. it'll have a different feel and more "full" tone to it than your V. i dont know if that makes any sense or im just babbling...

and it'll be a little harder to play, but i like that in a sick kinda way :)

Ben reed
08-09-2009, 05:52 PM
my gretsch is easier to play than any gibson!

Mitch-PTV
08-09-2009, 06:10 PM
i actually find the body really comfortable on a Gretsch. i always thought that the large bodies would take some getting used to, but i picked it up and it felt right straight away.

Joab
08-10-2009, 07:58 PM
i should have specified, I havent played many gibbos, but the ones that i have played were really easy to BEND. the bending on my gretsch, note it is an electromatic, is pretty difficult.

Mitch-PTV
08-10-2009, 08:06 PM
id say that'd be because your string gauge. im assuming the gretsch still has 11's and the gibson has 10's. but yea, that would contribute to being harder to bend

Ben reed
08-10-2009, 08:09 PM
it may have been that there were light strings on the gibsons in the shop because they tend to have light strings most of the time...

Joab
08-10-2009, 08:49 PM
yeah must be the strings, good thinkin :)

UbangiStomper
08-18-2009, 03:21 AM
Maybe bigger frets on gibbos? Makes a difference ;)

Joab
08-18-2009, 11:23 AM
yeah that too, its even more noticable when your playing "up the dusty end"

FlyingV
10-03-2009, 10:59 PM
I HAVE to get some of those in my guitar asap!
Is it possible to get somebody to install them? because I have zero skill/knowledge when it comes to these sort of things...

any music shop will more than likely have a tech guy who will do it for you at a charge
