View Full Version : Marshal Amps.
Ok guys, a bit of an embarrassing question here.
Marshall Amps?
I know very little about them.
JCM/DSL/TSLetc. - whats the go/what's the differences?
Also, whats musician's corner's thoughts on a jcm800 and an eminar quad for $1200?
Cheers.

DSL's and TSL's are similar. They have the same clean channel and overdrive channel. The TSL has an additional lead channel with over-the-top gain. They are both very usable amps... the combo's, particularly the smaller watts ones in the range are prone to overheating and heat related problems (shortened tube life, developing cold solder joints, etc).
Sounds like a good deal on the JCM800, but it depends what model it is. Some use diode clipping, despite being all valve.

I told you I didn't know much about them. ;)

thats a great deal there!
as far as I am concerned, anything after the 800 should never be turned on.
so true. modern marshall licks my bum crack.
but i need not worry cos my amp shits all over these marshalls any day of the week :D

i agree to a certain extent. i have heard a few good 900's tho. still, no much in the marshall line can beat an 800. the old superleads are nice, but the lack of master volume makes life difficult without a hotplate.
the JCM 2000's are alright amps... nothing too special tho.
like i said earlier, the 800's are great amps, amongst the best in the marshall line.
what year and model are you looking at?
also, these amps are pretty damn loud. its probaly a good idea to invest in a THD hotplate. they use the blue 16 ohm models.

I can't tell you. It's the secret to my awesome sound ;)
but I've heard my amp up against 2 marshalls side by side, both cranked and mine cuts through like butter :D sooo good. it cost almost 5K with the cab too :p it must be good! hahaha

She paid 5k for it and isn't willing to say what it is?
I have a feeling its a mesa. hehe.
I haven't been able to contact the guy about it more yet, so I don't have any more details. Expect some soon though.
Can anyone tell me about eminar quads? I can't find much on the interwebs

is neo her name?
I don't think I'll get it now. The guy doesn't really know much about its history.
- He bought it from a pawn shop
- Had problems with fuses blowing
- Got a complete rebuild from a techy who installed an effects loop and two extra pre amp valves (i'm assuming for more gain??)
- Doesn't know what speakers the cab is loaded with.
I've asked for pics - will post up here when I get them...
It's a pitty, such a good price...

ahhh ok. Hmm even if you needed to spend 300 to get it serviced, for 1500 you'd be walking away with a decent deal.
These days a JCM800 alone for 1500 is still good. Throw in a free quad box and thats even better! - The average price 800's are going for these days are around the 1800 mark.
If the amp if capable of still sounding original (as long as the mods havent 100% coloured the sound of the amp) then it still aint a bad deal...
Not amazing but not bad though
She paid 5k for it and isn't willing to say what it is?
I have a feeling its a mesa. hehe.
and ewwwwwww mesa. a lot of people give me shit about thinking i am some n00b with the shittest amp, then they actually see and hear what it's got inside and their jaws drop. one guy actually got on the floor and bowed down to me, which was pretty funny. :D
anyway it was hand built by an aussie so no generic mass produced bullshit. I'm guessing it was based on old marshall plexi's though but this thing is on steroids and it has several 12AX7's in it, as well as a couple of EL34's , and I dont wanna say what it is because it has the most awesome sound and I dont want anyone else to have that sound :p a bit of a silly reason but I have waited forever to have. meh
It's not a reynolds is it..?
nope. even if it was i wouldn't say. :p now lets get back to the real point of the topic hehe

thats weird that you dont want anyone to be able to have your tone...
plus most of us dont have 5k to spend on an amp and we wouldnt exact your tone anyway, with different setting and different guitars
this seems odd to me
I know, i said it was a silly reason but i am selfish :p obviously
