Man Richard Christy is friggin insane!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little bit about the man:
Apart from having played in 2 of the most widely recognised bands in heavy metal (Death and Iced Earth) and being recognised as one of the best drummers in the field of double bass drumming he's also a stand up comedian!

His practice routine -
I built up my foot stamina and speed by using a timer and a metronome combined with 20 pound ankle weights (10 pounds apiece). I would set the timer for 20 minutes and I would set the metronome at the highest comfortable speed that I could play consistent double bass at, usually around 200 beats per minute. I would then play double bass for a minute straight at that speed and every minute after that I would increase the metronome speed by 5 beats per minute until I couldn't play anymore, usually 10 to 15 minutes straight. Then I would take the ankle weights off and practice to Morbid Angel, Death, Malevolent Creation and other super fast bands that would help build up my foot speed by practicing to them.

Click Here to see him go toe-to-toe with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQNw4nbG69s)

It was pretty cool, you probably wouldn't have noticed but they played heaps of old Metal songs like King Diamond's "welcome home"

Enter Sandman (Metallica)
Attila (Iced Earth)
Nightcrawler (Judas Priest)
For Whom The Bell Tolls (Metallica)
A Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation (Trivium)

Once I had drums. well I still have them. but everytime you play them for more then 5 hours they roll away:D
It's really ghetto. and funny. and the cymbals bent! ohh what a great deal I got.

hello peeps. I just got an el-cheapo electric drum kit. no more neighbours complaining at 2 am :D

https://www.billyhydemusic.com.au/photos/4/medium-5053.jpg

I had a good ol' jam on it while the guy was helping out someone else and it sounds pretty good. got nothing on the $12,000 Roland I first went to have a look at :p though it is well designed. it makes diff sounds on the different parts of the cymbals and snare you can do rim shots, and also you can mute the cymbals! it took me a while to realise haha. my mum was talking to me as i hit the crash and i went to mute it just out of habbit but it didn't and so I was like dammit, but then i did it once again accidentally though and it stopped ringing and i was like WOW! how cool.

it didnt fit in my car though so I'll have to get a truck and pick it up tomorrow.

Grumma
05-09-2008, 08:26 PM
pull it apart to get it in your car?

I was considering getting an e-kit but to get as many pieces as I wanted would be too expensive

Neo
05-09-2008, 08:34 PM
nah it was all in a box and the back part of the frame apparently doesn't come apart :p it boggles the mind to think of a drum kit in a box.

the only thing i dont like is that they dont make cowbells for it! I'm trying to hunt down extra tom pads for this brand but I doubt they exist

Grumma
05-09-2008, 08:37 PM
wont need that specific brand - just need ones that work with the software lol.
just hack the mainframe!

Neo
05-09-2008, 08:48 PM
I don't think I know how to! :p meh its just to jam on while keeping everyone else happy so I don't really need a whole bunch of shit on it

plus I have a new student I will be starting to teach drums next week so I can use this kit on my computer to drum out the music and it'll write it itself and I can print it :) pretty cool

deano1337
05-10-2008, 01:48 PM
shit yeah that looks mad.. no point gettin the hell expenso ones.. just waste of money. and the good thing about electro ones you got like differnt themes or wat ever so youve actully got like 10 drumkits in one

Neo
05-11-2008, 04:19 PM
I found where the cowbell tone is :D haha theres some pretty weird sounds on there they even have one that goes *boing* haha

I've had a couple drum lessons here and there, nothing too complex. The other day while hanging out in the music room, the teacher just kinda put me on the spot and told me to do a certain beat, and I kept speeding up/down or stopping in the middle. I haven't played with other students before, so it was a freakin' out a little. :p He told me I was doing alright though, so yay!

Deadcat Kaye
05-11-2008, 04:36 PM
I've never had drum lessons...and I can only keep 1 REALLY basic beat just coz i've listened to the drums in lots of songs

Neo
05-11-2008, 07:47 PM
I've never had lessons either. drumming comes naturally to me. I felt like playing one day so I got a kit and just started playing. I learn by listening to music and I just know how to play it all of a sudden :p once I stopped playing for 2 years because I started playing guitar and then when I picked up again I was so much better because I had changed the styles of music I listened to in that time. I think its cool that way cos if I know the song really well I automatically know the drums too :D

he doesnt the do snare rolls properly before the solo!

and his kit is electric except the cymbals (actually i think they're electric too)

as long as you dont have a terrible terrible terrible kit, you can put your weight on a kick drum with no problems...

Bend the bass drum ??? LLLOOOOLLL

It will either break or not break. 75% of bass drums I think would not break

so...
what types of drumsticks do guys here use?
i currently use vic firth American hickorys 7a's, a natural tip, ther $25 a pair from billy hyde music.
but im contemplating getting 5a's, 7a's are just a bit thin at times.

Neo
09-21-2008, 10:59 PM
I use 5B's. no specific brand. I prefer nylon tips, but on my electric kit I use wood tips.

oh and for your interest, the number is how long the stick is. the letter is how thick it is ;)

mel_bound
09-21-2008, 11:16 PM
I like 5a wood tips, again no specific brand, nylons piss me off for some reason. I think because once I was playing once and a nylon tip just snapped off while I was playing something (not particularly hard or anything either!). I also like their sound on cymbals better.

Shadow
09-22-2008, 03:15 AM
5A's and B's are the bomb, except I seem to have come into posession of some jazz sticks (the number and letter has faded off) and since i'm all out of my normal sticks i'm stuck using these light, thin drumsticks. :p

I still have all my broken sticks in a box... might take a photo sometime.

interesting
i didn't actually know that, but then there a bit inconsistent (that iv'e found)
i mean i have different lngth 7a's
oh jazz sticks are wicked, that generally what the 7a's are and the nylon tip falling off is why i don't use them much.

nylons tend produce a crisp clearer sound, but then i don't think they work as well for using the crash.
but maybe im just wildly over thinking it all.

Shadow
09-23-2008, 02:06 PM
Yeah, they were / are 7A's, with nylon tips. They don't have much life left in them though, I've been playing through White Noise (the album) almost daily with them. :p

konkelo
05-14-2009, 07:43 AM
Another drummer signs in! I've played drums for 7 years now and also taken drum lessons for 7 years too. I play drums in two bands at the moment. I have Tama Swingstar 80's kit and I've had it since I started playing. Got to take a fresh picture of it later because I've changed my cymbal setup a bit since my last pic of them. I currently use Paiste, Zildjian and Meinl cymb

so...
what types of drumsticks do guys here use?

I recently bought Balbex G5A sticks and I really like them. You people should check out that brand if it's available there where you live. Very good prize and very good sticks. It's relavitely new brand and I guess not very much known. I also use (like I guess most of the drummers around the world) Vic Firth sticks (5A or 5B) too.

deano1337
05-28-2009, 11:57 PM
no question, vic firth, 5A, and either hickory or maple.. both awesome. and wood tip.
does anyone know how to re-enforce a kick drum so people can jump of them.. ive heard sooo many people say dont do it because it will bend the shells and the hoops, but is thier anyway of reenforcing it yourself?

I think it's all up to the brand in the end of how long or thick they make them, but all the sizes are in relation to the other ones of the same type i guess. of course the cheap ones are gonna be all retarded

I now realise why they gave me a whole bunch of cheap free ones with my electric kit >.< my vic firth 5B's broke the darn thing. but then all the cheap ones kept snapping. I just can't win!

in other news. I think I am in love with these shells:
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8978/76877597.jpg

that would be awesome with 2 or maybe even 3 rack toms

dunno which cymbals I'd get for it yet.

I finally got my self a drum kit after playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band drums for so long.

It seems its true, it gives you a real kick start in learning the drums. I'm alot better at drums than I am guitar.

I need to get my pedal stuck to the ground, the bloody thing keeps moving. But the kit is awesome.

Has anyone here played a Gretsch drum kit? What are they like?
I was talking to my friend and he said that he heard they weren't very good. I'm not a drummer, I'm just curious.

Never tried one but I've heared that they're pretty good.

Recorded a drum cover of Second Solution today! Check it out. It has some little mistakes here and there, but don't let them bother you. It's recorded with only two microphones. I had to upload it to Myspace because YouTube started whining about copyrights and it didn't allow me to have the original audio track in it. But anyway, check it out!

Thanks man! I used AKG C1000 condenser mic as overhead and AKG D112 for bass drum. I was about to use something for the snare too, but surprise surprise I forgot to take the cable for it :D The smaller crash (which is on the right side when looked the set in the front) is 16" Paiste Sound Formula crash, the one in the left (from the front of the set) is 18" Paiste Alpha crash. I also use the ride quite much for crash, and that is Meinl's Byzance ride.

I've been thinking of doing some more TLE tracks on drums. Maybe Pictures in the Mirror or something from White Noise :)
