View Full Version : J Award
Heard on Jay and the Doctor this morning that next weekend the winner of the J Award will be announced. There's gonna be a special on or something. I'll try and find more info.
fingers crossed for TLE hey? :D
Yep. And if not TLE, then I'm going for Sarah Blasko, The Grates and Hilltop Hoods.

Yeah, go me!
I'm not sure who I'd put my money on to win though. I'm not sure how predictable this award is gonna be.
Sarah

I'd quite like to see Macromantics come second to TLE - but J listeners are a bunch of hippies :P
At least Wolfmother aren't nominated. That gives TLE a bit of a chance.

Wolfmother released their album last calendar year, which is what the J Award is based on (unlike the ARIAs). Incidentally, they won that year.
Since the award is like comparing apples to oranges in the sense that everything is in one category, it's hard to tell what the criteria are. Plus this is only the second year, so it's hard to generalise.
My tip for a winner would be The Grates.
hehe that's cause you're in love with Patience though Aaron :p
they'd be in my top 3 to cheer for though i suppose!
*M!
Liz's Top 3
1. The Living End
2. Sarah Blasko
3. The Grates
I felt the need to tell everyone who I wanted to win. :p
why not?? :D
...not sure of my 3, its anyone's game really

hehe that's cause you're in love with Patience though Aaron :p
Haha, I didn't say that's who I *wanted* to win, that was just my 'tip' (you know, like in footy tipping or whatever).
Wolfmother seemed to win last year based on the success that their debut album brought them - they weren't the most original, but they evidently did what they did well. The Grates have certainly increased their following with their debut album as well, so that would be the reason they'd win, if they do.
The Living End, on the other hand, have produced an album that isn't so much a breakthrough as it is matured. They're finding a sound of their own to be comfortable with, but that means less to people aren't fans. That said, this album has increased the fanbase significantly, probably the most since their debut album (if the figures from a poll on the old board about when you became a fan are anything to go by).
I thought Triple J were starting the J Award so they could be typically indie and give it to someone who makes beautiful but unappreciated music. Not so. So I'm not sure how much of a chance the less mainstream artists have.
i was right though wasn't I :p
hehe
it's ok - she's hot!
i agree with you though...
TLE = matured
Grates = increase in popularity
i would also like the Hoodies to get a look in - 'cause they're fun!
pity Butterfingers wasn't nominated - that album is killer!
*M!
I've been told I dance like Patience. :o
hahaha!! i WANT to dance like Patience :D
Haha. I got told by a complete stranger at the TLE concert in Port Linclon that I danced like her. They also asked me who The Living End were.
J AWARD AFTER PARTY
On Friday Dec 1 at Sydney's Gaelic Club, triple j announces the winner of the J Award.
Then at 8pm the Gaelic Club throws its doors open to everyone to help us celebrate. We've got Kid Kenobi, DJ Debris from Hilltop Hoods, Maya Jupiter, Robbie Buck and Rosie Beaton all doing DJ sets.

I want tle or Bob Evans to win it but I have no idea who will. There's no one stand out this year.
Gotye is a good outside chance I reckon but it'll most likely be out of The Sleepy Jackson, Augie March and the Hilltop Hoods

If I can get the recording thinger on our computer to work before Fri, I should be able to do it, provided that my hair doesn't take too long to get done. :) But don't count on me doing it incase I can't get it to work. I'll let you all know if I can though :)
Sarah
11-29-2006, 10:05 AM
oh yeah i don't work Fridays - awsome!
haha, i'll probably record it for myself, so I can be a back up recorder for you guys :)

Hahaha "Back up recorder", sounds like you're the shit musician in the primary school orchestra.
Sarah
11-30-2006, 01:45 AM

Hilltop Hoods are the winners.
Was just announced by Myf and Caroline Tran.
I thought that was probably going to be the case, as they were previously announced to be performing at the award party. Subtle.
and the winner is...
The Hiltop Hoods
*fuck i'm slow
** Yeah, i agree Aaron
Oops, I forgot that was on this afternoon. I only just got back from tennis.
Did anyone record it?
There were more worthy winners listed than them.
Bob Evans, Drones, TLE. sheeesh.
Sarah
12-01-2006, 07:40 PM
Yeah, that was pretty lame.
I recorded it, but only heard the announcement part (as I was too busy watching Dirty Dancing for the billionth time)...
I'll have to quickly listen to it and see if they had TLE interviewed
Sarah
12-01-2006, 07:47 PM
...okay, so looks like no TLE action
Julian
12-01-2006, 09:41 PM
Why didn't the Hilltop Hoods deserve it? They've been working hard for a long time and are still on an independant label which they support heaps. TLE have been there and done that, SOE is a good album but it's not their best. I like Bob Evans, tle and Augie March more but good on the Hilltop Hoods.

Hilltop hoods weren't as deserving as aot of other nominees (maybe onesided to TLE but that's life)
cammo
12-02-2006, 10:27 AM
I think the Hoods last album was better than this one, but stoked to see them getting the accolades they are now for their past and present work. Good choice.

Your all far too moderate, reasonable, sensible and nice. They beat TLE! You should be out burning cars and stealing gnomes and stuff in revenge.
Not everybody is going to love the boys as much as we do, I've learnt that from past experiences. Sure, I'm dissapointed they didn't win but at least they didn't lose to some crappy band. The Hilltop Hoods are a really good band who deserve that win.
The Dying Start
12-02-2006, 11:19 PM
I would have loved to see TLE win, but fucken hell. The 'Hoods are great, they deserve it. They've struggled for so long to get where they are, and now they're in such a position they're helping other artists out. It's the kinda selfless stuff that is virtually non existent in the music industry, because it's so cut-throat. They gave like $3000 to an upcoming artist and stuff and i think they do that every year.

TLE didnt deserve it. SOE isnt their best work and there were better albums released this year than it.

Haha just because TLE released it that doesnt mean I need to soil my pants over it. I just dont think it deserved that award.

Haha, oh man. I'm pretty sure that Lowee was being sarcastic guys! :p
Anyway, I'm glad that the Hoods won it. They deserve it, and like Glenn said, they've worked so fucking hard to get where they are now (not that the other nominees haven't). They're tops a band, good on 'em. :)
