View Full Version : The Living End - Obscure Reference Thread
The Dying Start

This is entirely different to the "I heard TLE on TV" threads. I don't wanna hear about how you heard Roll On playing on the tennis coverage. This is for really obscure and unexpected TLE references.
For example. In the short running, but very funny American sitcom "Off Centre" (Created by one of the makers of American Pie), there is a Roll On block mount poster hanging by the door of the flat that features in the show.
Sarah has just mention in Headlines how a Groove Terminator film clip features a magazine with TLE on the cover.
And an Episode of Charmed featured a TLE poster.
And a Sarah McLeod film clip had Tour posters on the wall in one of the scenes.
Please, discuss and add any more!!
Screen Caps or photos would be awesome. (I'll try to cap Off Centre tonight!)

i'm pretty sure i saw a roll on poster in an episode of secret life of us once, it was in the fu-bar i think. i always found it pretty cool
i'm surprised secret life was able to get away with calling one of the places on it Fu-bar...
*shrugs*
i shall do some train spotting but alas - there is very little available for me here to look at for obscurities
cool thread Glenn!

that's really nice info!
:)
We also know one thing but we sure it's not rare because we saw it here in ukraine. It was aussie movie, we don't remember a title - about school boys-cheaters, and how they try to cheat on exams. It was an Prisoner of society song in soundtrack.... h-m-m, not sure maybe it was a Second solution? It's a 6 PM o'clock now, and we are totally tired.
And coming back from an ad break at the arias they played Til The End.
I picked it and started giggling.
Everyone looked at me.

So, Erin and Liz, let's try to keep the thread uncluttered, yeah?
I can't think of any.
...whoops!!
its gone now...sorry 'bout that
Home And Away's old drop in centre had a RO poster at one stage.

Once on the aussie sketch comedy 'big bite' there was a sketch done on a tle fan in a large festival situation, bdo or homebake probably.. can't remember.
Interviewer; Were here with the living ends biggest fan!!1!!111.. So are you excited to see your favorite band??!?!1?
TLE Fan; Oh, uh yeah.. *raises beer*
Basically the interviewer was just really enthused and the tle fan wouldn't have a bar of it and was how you would generalize the average tle fan to be... early 20's, male, sunnies, beer in hand and couldn't give a f**k.
edit Wow that's a lot of deleted posts.

i think it was Tapdogs...you know that movie. I only saw it coz it was on TV when i was on here...anyways All Torn Down plays for a minute or so in a scene. I found that amazing...
i was looking through a music magazine yesterday with all these Christmas Specials (as you do)
the ad for Gretch's had something to the effect of "this sound is the living end"
it's a bit tangential but i thought somewhat appropriate...
i'll get a scan and whack it in here when i get the chance to use the computer at home that has the scanner

thats obscure????
It is pretty damn obscure, yes.
Alot more obscure than "They played TLE to the add" or "TLE was in this movie soundtrack!" which i specifically told people not to post.
Yesterday we had our Middle School Assembly and our principal said a speech about this year and the things that have happened etc. and she talked about the Triple J One Night Stand. She then said "Long live The Living End." I know it's not much. But I thought I'd post it anyway.
i was watching 'the real seachange' and a guy was stocking blunt magazines with the living end on the front cover

OK. I searched the whole forum and this seems like the best thread to post this.
I got "PEPSI ROCK" for my birthday a few months ago and played it today and realised that i hadn't posted about this album here.
"One Said To The Other" is one of the Fearured tracks on the album.
Not sure if this is old news or not but there you go!
Anyway, here (http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/6980847/a/Pepsi+Rock.htm) is a track list of the CD.
Wake Up's on the Barbie Summer Hits album.

Hate to break it to you, but a band being featured on a compilation CD is hardly an obscure occurence.
Colezy
12-16-2006, 11:08 PM
This probably doesn't count, but I'm going to say it anyway :p
I am just about to pay for some TLE stuff on ebay and the seller is in Germany. The TLE reference comes in here. You know how on the FHOI dvd, the guys are in Germany and they're looking out the car(?) window and saying out loud the names of the shops in the street (World of Sex, etc.).
Anyway, there is a place called Hamburger Sparkasse and there is a nice close up shot of the building. WELL! The name of the bank of the ebay seller is called "Sparkasse Lüdenscheid".
Yeah. Not quite what this thread is about, but its close and I am EXTREMELY bored right now. Plus, its probably a tad more relevant than some of the other posts made in this thread(?).

There's this band, I'm not sure who they are but they seem okay. Anyway, I saw one of their video clips and I'm 70% certain the song's called I Can't Give You What I Haven't Got. That or Don't Go Getting Yourself In A Knot. Point being, in the clip, there were SO many TLE references... it was RIDICULOUS
I'm tired from an 18th last night, it's not my fault. We moshed to West End Riot and Carry Me Home and many others 'till the wee hours of the night. Fell asleep at 4. Woke up at 8:30 and all refused to go back to sleep.

I don't know if a quote from my mum counts as an obscure reference, but it's kind of relevant.
I was getting ready for work one day, and I work in a bakery and the uniform is a red shirt with checkered black and white shorts (attractive, I know) and my mum says, "Black and red always looks so smart! All you need now is a stripey tshirt and you'd be a Living End doll!"

I dont know if this has been mentioned before or if its appropriate but a while ago The Living End were the subject of a question on Temptation (well kinda) - I'm paraphrasing alot but it was something along the lines of "the lead singer/guitarist from band The Living End, Chris, shares his surname with which former U.S secretary of defence...".
So it's only half a Living End question but I found it surprising and obscure. If someone remembers the actual question that would be good, 'cos I'm sure I've got it wrong.

I KNOW! I'll just get my mum to put it on my TLE DVD that shes making for me via the VHS/DVD recorder.. and then get it onto my computer somehow... :)
I will gladly instruct you on how to do that last step, when you reach that stage.
You will of course require a DVD drive in your Computer.

Big Bite? That's out on DVD now, I think. Released early November last year?

Rock Around The Clock is on Ovation a few times in the next week. It ends with the words 'The Living End', and thats where TLE got their name from.. but i'm sure we all knew that ;) It's worth watching just for the scenes with Bill Haley and The Comets.

TLE are mentioned in about 5 questions in 'Buzz the music quiz' (ha, outa about 1000 questions)
i remember a few of 'em
1. who is this band (playing second solution)
2.what is this song (same song)
3. the lead singer of this band played in which supergroup (same song)
cant remember the other two

I haven't either. They do have a guitarist who can hold a tune though.
I dunno if this is really obscure or anything but on Triple J this morning Jay and the Doctor and Myf were talking about how the BDO commitee is going to plant trees or something and they suggested naming the trees after muscians and said the 'Chris Cheney tree'. They also said that they need someone going around telling off the bands for doing un-environmental things and said something about someone going up to Chris and telling him he's using too much hairspray.

In the Guitarist Australia magazine with Andrew Stockdale on the cover (September '06 I think?), The Living End is mentioned 3 times. (It's my friend's magazine)
1. The guitarist from Regurgitator says that he'll never be like Chris Cheney, or something along the lines of that.
2. It is mentioned in the Wolfmother article that Andrew Stockdale borrowed an amp off Chris.
3. An interview with The Butterfly Effect says something about TLE touring with AC/DC - "The Living End got to tour with AC/DC, the bastards."
They're probably wrong so if ya wanna correct them - go ahead.

I don't think a soundtrack would feature a song if it wasn't in the movie..would it?? That's silly if it does! :p
I can guarantee that it happens frequently

Sometimes the soundtrack features songs that are in the end credits, not the actual movie.. but Roll on is IN the movie, I promise.

Well the movie "Rock Star" has songs that were written specifically for the movie that are on the soundtrack but not the movie. And also visa versa
