Any past stories, tips, places to go, things to see and people to do would all be great!

Thanks in advance,

I didn't know both of you were going. I can only comment on Rome. Too many dodgy beggars. Avoid wearing backpacks there if you can. If somebody seems like they are trying to give you directions, they probably want money or are trying to distract you so you can get mugged.

Buy your own water from supermarkets. They'll rip you off everywhere. Most places have no air conditioning. You may have to pay to use the toilets in some places.

In Rome this year we went to the Colossuem (only walked around it, would probably be nice to go inside), the Roman forum (I liked this, but it was very hot on the day - but I guess you're going in Winter), the Trevi Fountain (very nice, crowded but quick to see), the Spanish Steps (also very nice and close to Trevi), St Peter's and Sistene Chapel (arrive very early for this. We did St Peter's first, then lined up a bit for Sistene Chapel. For Sistene Chapel either line up very early or mid afternoon).

The Metro is excellent and cheap to travel around on. But be careful for dodgy people. Especially old grandmas with fake babies. If you want more info, let me know.

If you travel all the way to Italy and don't take the time to visit the Amalfi Coast you are ccccaaaaarraazzzzzy! Its possibly one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I wish I could say it was my photo, but I borrowed it from the internet. My amateur photography doesn't come near doing the place justice. :o

No, no, no. We leave 2 days AFTER Christmas and stay for 24 days.

We are going to see "We will rock you (http://www.queenonline.com/wewillrockyou/)" at the theatre in London (good thing i didn't end up seeing it in Australia) already so that should be good.

Thanks for the places for clothing girls! Much appreciated!

I highly recommend the 'Rough Guide to..' tour books, they give honest information about restaurants, hotels, sights etc. You should be able to buy them for most of the cities you're visiting.

London..I can give you endless information!! I'll write something out and I just added you to MSN, so I can send it to you on there. The main sights, Camden, shows to see (if you're interested in seeing more that is), must-see areas..

I should also be able to come up with a fair amount on Paris. The main thing coming to my head is the Cimitere du Pere-Lachaise - famous for Jim Morrisons grave, but is also an amazing place to walk around.

Oh, and I better see you when you're in London mmkay?

hillaas
11-29-2006, 05:21 PM
OK, sounds good!

I'll be on MSN some time later this week cos of exams so i'll talk to you then Jake.
But thanks for the tips and for giving me a heads up on the "Rough Guide to" books.

Cheers!

Anywhere in Camden will have punk stuff, at varying prices (and quality..), but that'd be your best bet for punk stuff in London really.

You're lucky.
I've only been to the UK and Germany and I was about 8.
I don't actually remember much. Except for my scary German relatives.

Jake
12-11-2006, 03:25 AM
When I was 7/8, my parents took my brother out of school for a term and we backpacked around Europe for 6 weeks (using night trains mainly), and then a hire car around England and Scotland - seeing mainly family in the latter. It was a never-forget experience and I'm so grateful for it. I'm also glad that we were made to keep journals every single day, re-reading that just brings so many memories flooding back. It's made me want to travel a lot more now though!

Daniel
12-11-2006, 10:05 AM
woah that sounds amazing/awsum!!!

i want to do something like that for a 1yr or something

Jake
12-12-2006, 02:48 AM
Ok, so I made a typo, it was actually 6 weeks around Europe, and then the rest of 3 months in England and Scotland! But I would have loved to stay longer and see more of southern and eastern Europe - and revisit most of the places I went to!

Daniel
12-12-2006, 09:00 AM
cool have you sent the "places to stay"?

camel99@gmail.com?

Jake
12-13-2006, 02:05 AM
I was going to compile a list of that? I just sent the places of interest and sights. To be quite honest, the places I've stayed in, you'd want to stay clear of, and I don't know places to stay in London. I'd recommend the 'Rough Guide To..' again though, they give you honest info and a range from budget to top-prices.

Daniel

I swear I've already said all of this. I'm not meeting up with you if you're this slow. London is too fast and you'll die or something.

Camden has lots of shops and market stalls selling punk stuff, and will be your best bet for punk stuff. Carnaby Street has all the brands, which might include 'punk' themed stuff, at XextremeXpricesX (ie. you won't be eating if you shop there..). Oxford Street is the same, but more affordable.

Jake, after readingg you little story about you backpacking adventure, it reminded me of my backpacking around Thailand holiday. It was heaps of fun! I think thta backpacking is the best way to see a country.
Anyway, you said that you kept a journal-typre thing. I think i'm going to do that in Europe. I was pondering whether to do it or not but if it brings back all the memories i think i will.
