that's right, I can't remember where it left off, so I'll start I've noticed a huge difference in the drumming from modern artillery to state of emergency. I reckon he's found his place in the band yeah?

hehe don't worry about it. I have some 5as, from when I wanted to try drumming.. I still wanna get lessons. I should do that sometime :p as far as drumming goes I find it's easier for me to hit the drums hard with a lighter stick then drum fast with a heavier one

I also enjoy flood the sky. I remember seeing a bit of it on the how to make an album thing and wanting to find that song. I was fuckin' happy when I did!
I do really like Trav's drumming aswell especially that he changed shit around alot and had alot of personality on stage. Mind you I'm only going from videos cause I never got to see them while Trav was in the band. I dig Andy's drum style in general alot it's really come through on state of emergency I reckon
The Dying Start

Trav was awesome live...god he hit those skins hard...and....i dunno...it really was weird watching him. He was everywhere, and managed to make it sound good.

I think i only saw one or two shows with Trav. It's disappointing but realistically they're playing some of their best shows now, and that's great!
graverobbin'bastard
09-12-2006, 02:18 PM
yeah I also do really like Andy as a drummer alot as well. He seems to fit in with the band really nicely. All I know is when i saw them it was the best gig I ever saw
The Dying Start
09-12-2006, 02:21 PM
Good...they're legitimately one of the best live bands in the world, but for some reason it's really hard to convince some people of that fact.
But then they're probably all tasteless wankers anyway.

they are really different but at the same time they both work well with the band.
well lets face it - Chris and Scotty wouldn't let any old Joe Schmoe into the band to drum - they'd have to work well witht he band... wouldn't they?

The first thing they did with Andy was "go down' the local" haha. And the rest is, as they say, history!! :p
man - i could have pretended to be able to play the drums so that i could've gone to the pub with them!
dammit!
talk about a wasted opportunity... :p
na - i wouldn't've wanted to waste their time as much as i'd like to hang out with the at the pub one day!

it's true he would have to work well with the band. I'd like to meet the band someday aswell but not bloody likely haha.
the meeting part isn't as difficult as i first thought...
when i met them they were such lovely blokes - i didn't get to hang around with any of them for substantial ammounts of time but even so... it was cool to say hi and introduce myself... they even introduced themselves to me which i was way pleased with (even though i was standing there thinking - as if you need to introduce yourselves you're totally my idols)
i do quite like listening to Andy drum though...
but it's been so long since i've heard trav in anything other than CD form...
if only i could travel back in time and listen to all the gigs i've been to again to compare them side by side...

Yeah they don't come to canada too often though heh, I alas have never seen trav drum with them only on live footage. I only recently saw them live for the first time.
you should have gone up and said hi after/before the gig when you saw them - i did that at one show - it was fun Chris remembered who i was from our last meeting and i got a hug from andy - yay!

Aren't they going back to the US/Canada later this year? If so you should hang around the venue on the day, you might get to see them while they're unloading gear or something.
...yeah Im quite a fan of Andy's drumming :D

there's this Aussie band called the Lucksmiths (they're pretty indie pop but write some cool lyrics - not everyone's cup of tea however) and their lead singer plays stand up kit!
it'd be really tiring i'd reckon - although i'm not as fond of the sound 'cause there's less things for you to hit...

I don't htink it'd be tiring just boring to play I like having more freedom to do more stuff with my kit. Stand up drums tend to sound more minimal I think Joey did use his bas drum whlie standing though it sounds like it anywyas.

Andy's solo is way better than the one Trav had in it when they first started playing E Boogie. Trav's really didn't fit that well.
And Joe played a Stand Up Kit the whole time, yes.
And whilst the standup kits are often very minimal, you can get alot of the same sounds...and fullness of a sit down kit. And people like Jim from Stray Cats make the drums sound huge....and during live shows can often get a hi hat or another piece of the kit brought it.

So I'm thinking about drumming in general and what I like to hear drumming wise when listening to music and all that. I think one thing I quite like about andy's drumming is (I may have said this before hopefully not but if so oops) The beat is generally simple but the flare comes in through the little fills and rolls and accents and all that. Nothing crazy. I mean in general I feel in music you shouldn't play complicated stuff just cause you can. You gotta do what works for the song. I reckon the best musicians are the ones that know when they should play something simple and when to fancy it up. It's all about the song, I think alot of musicians forget that and just want to impress everyone. sorry for the long ass post

It's probably a bit gimmicky if you decided to do it now, but back then it was how things were done. And in the case of Stray Cats and Runaway Boys/TLE it was a case of doing things the way your heroes did things. Likewise it could be argued that the double bass is gimmicky.

I love Andy's drumming, it's pretty much the same style as mine. He definitely changed the band's sound though, although it's now apparent that they wanted to go more pop and straightforward with MA. It's a strange one, visually he's the one for the band, while they miss Trav's outbursts of craziness.

No one on absolutepunk seem to be thinking the way we are.But then they all seem to be arguing about it being viral marketing. They mentioned Aaron Rubin but then someone shot it down and they ignored that clue. But it seems to be Ilan and the clue on BN points to 'prophets,in my opinion,so are they just looking at the clues the wrong way?

I think the main reason alot of people are opposed to Andy is because of the style of music the band was playing when Trav was in the band compared to what the band has released since his departure.
I really dont think Andy is the person to blame for that. The band was obviously going in the direction that has led them to where they are now even when Trav was in the band, look at Roll On . . or even a song like 'Fond Farewell' from the 'One Said'
The old psychobilly songs like 'Witch Doctor' and 'There Is No Radio' were awesome but I do think if the band wanted to they could easily write a song equally as rockin with Andy behind the kid.

I think Andy grew into the band. You can hear it over the course of their discography. He started out playing some tight, but basic drums, and over time he was contributing more and more interesting parts. I'd rate his skills as equivalent with Trav, if not a little more consistent. They're totally different players and styles though, so its quite ridiculous to directly compare them. I appreciate the contribution that they both made to the band, i feel they've both shaped the band over the course of their stints.
