View Full Version : Where does everyone live?

I know you can look up member's profiles and find out and I know you can look on that map thing but I wanted to see how many people lived where etc.
I apologise for the lack of details - only having 'overseas' for example, but the poll only lets me have 10...
So yeah .... if you post in here, tell us what city, what it's like and ... yeah :)
EDIT: I'm not going to vote just yet, given that I move in 25 days, but currently I'm in Cairns (far northern Queensland) and I'll be moving to Katoomba, which is in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

Also, I'll actually write about it later. I'm way too tired to think now.

[edit] Town history
Churchill began as a service centre for the Hazelwood Power Station and future replacement for Yallourn and Morwell townships. Construction on Churchill began in 1965. The town was planned with a well defined commercial centre, expansive parklands, a mix of government and privately owned quarter-acre (1,000 mē) town blocks and light industrial estates spaced from residential areas by a belt of parkland. The transport system was to be a network of restricted-access highways and a ring road fully encircling the town. Population was planned to reach 6,000 by 1971, and eventually 40,000 by 2000. However slow development of services and a slowdown of the state of Victoria's power station construction program meant that Churchill was to never realise its potential, and population reached a modest level of 5500 by the 1991, before stabilising at around 5,000. Signs of renewed growth are appearing, with a new housing estate development opening in 2005, the first for some years.
[edit] Names
Churchill was originally to be named Hazelwood, but was renamed after Sir Winston Churchill's death. The change of name has not been without it's critics, and residents who pushed hard to restore the Hazelwood name were finally heard in 1989, when the town was asked to vote on whether the town would be renamed to Hazelwood or stay as Churchill. The name Churchill won by narrow vote.
Some of the names in Churchill have a distinctly local flavour. Estates in the town were named after various early settlers. These include Silcock, Medew, McMillan, Glendonald, and Northways. Roads have also been named after people (such as McDonald, Canterbury, Philip, and Manning), flora (Acacia, Hawthorn, Blackwood and Birch), and Aboriginal names (Amaroo, Gundaroo).
[edit] Landmarks
Churchill has one defining and quite unique landmark, that being a huge replica of Winston Churchill's cigar (known locally as "the big cigar"). Originally it was anticipated that five of these would be built around points of the town centre's edge, but only one was actually ever built. The Binishell is also a prominent feature visible from much of the eastern side of town.
[edit] Monash University Gippsland Campus
Monash University's third largest campus is located in the town. The Gippsland Campus has about 7,000 students, most studying by off campus learning, although the campus intends to have more on-campus students then off-campus within a few years time. The campus was opened in 1972, as the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (GIAE), which was formerly known as Yallourn Technical School, (and later, College), and was based in Yallourn township. A merger with Monash University took place in 1990. The campus was known as Monash University College for a few years, before becoming a full part of the university in the mid-1990s. The campus has grown exponentially in size over the years, with some of the major building additions being Science and Engineering (1986), Information Technology (1994), a two level library (1997), Gippsland Education Precinct (2006), and a new auditorium is about to be built to replace the Binishell (1980).
[edit] The end of the town pub
As of August 2006 there is no traditional pub located in the town. The traditional pub was set to be developed into a Safeway store, a vote was sent to council. Safeway was knocked back by council vote. An appeal to VCAT from Safeways owners is likely.
The public bar of the Churchill hotel called last drinks at 10.23pm on the 3rd September 2006. The Bottleshop will close its roller doors on the 9th September 2006. Safeway has appealed the councils decision and taken them to VCAT, the decision should be known sometime in December.
We also had the choice between an outdoor Olympic swimming pool or a statue of a cigar to honor Sir Winston Churchill. They chose the stupid cigar. Though it was featured in several travel programs, and in some gameshow like the mole or something similar.
We also have a myspace that a uni student created. its pretty crap. www.myspace.com/the3842crew

Ok, so expanding on this...
Here are some photos that I have stolen from a real estate website. Small, I know, but its the best I can do until day light tomorrow!
http://203.17.253.5/objects/props/1496/2261496ms1150725600.jpg http://casualimage.domain.com.au/img/0/4615025_1_TE.JPG
Our local beach: http://www.stayz.com.au/property/image/01/37/02/img_13702_767777782821_max272x204.jpg
I am here: http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/images/wireframe_maps_normal/wf_9002127.gif Hobart is just to the right of the dot, at the bottom of that longer/thicker black line pointing north.
If you're visiting the area and have the youngin's with you, maybe going to the beach is a good idea. There are plenty of birds and lots of sand to keep the kids entertained.
If you're in the area for a romantic weekend away with your loved one, maybe one of the two local pubs is a more appropriate option. Pub number one, and closest to Hobart, is more for the laid back, I'm-too-old-to-party-just-want-to-get-to-know-the-locals sort of couple. Pub number two, usually accomodated by the (mostly underage) local bogans, is more for the motor bike-lovin'-lets-get-drunk-and-smoke-dope kind of couple.
We cater for all of your shopping needs also. We have a fine butcher, a delightful bakery, a video store, a mini supermarket, hardware store/take away store and a post office.
So that's it folks, my short but sweet intoduction to life in the Lewisham/Dodges Ferry area.
Enjoy your day!

Very cool, I spent several years in Glenbrook when I was growing up.
Anyway right now I'm out at a tiny little blip on the Australian map, a mining town called Tieri. The town's population is at around 2000 I think and not much goes on this time of year because everyone pisses off to go back to the real world for a while. First person to find Tieri on a map wins the title of "Greatest map person thing". But I've only lived here for 22 months or so, due to my dad getting a job at the mines out here. But before that I lived at Bribie Island on the Sunshine Coast, I lived there for 9 almost ten years and I move back there by the middle of this year. Wonderful to know I'm sure.

I'm still too lazy to actually think.
So this is Poowoomba, according to Wiki.
Toowoomba (also known as the 'The Garden City') is a city in South East Queensland, Australia. It is located 132 km west of Queensland's capital city, Brisbane, and two hours drive from the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast beaches. With a population of 113,687 (2003 ABS estimate), Toowoomba is Australia's second largest inland city after Canberra, the nation's capital.
Notable current and former residents of Toowoomba! According to Wiki of course.

I live 5 minutes from Nicoles house funnily enough, in a place called Carlton, in Tasmania...but hopefully not for very much longer!
It's nice here, great beach, and um...well, that's about it. 2 minutes down the road is Dodges Ferry, and that has a pub and a shop and a servo and a bakery and a butchers and a chemist and a burnt out surf shop and stuff - its a big beach town, haha.
Its about half an hour from town/Hobart, which wouldn't be bad except all the Carlton locals drive like lunatics - i nearly had a big 4WD drive over the top of me on my way home tonight!
I hope sometime soon our house sells and we can rent in the city somewhere small and cheap.

Okay, I live in New Jersey, USA... and I have to say that we're not all a bunch of jerks who live amidst mental mafia members and smelly garbage heaps. Parts of NJ are actually really nice.
Here's a pic I took while out on Greenwood Lake, which is about 40 minutes from where I live.

40 minutes in another direction is New York City, which is also a lot of fun.
About an hour south is the famous Asbury Park, NJ, a city of ruin that I adore! Maybe one day I will post some pics from my trip there a couple months ago... but for now, still try to think of NJ as pretty. :p

most people have heard of it, but hardly anyone comes here.

it's not as pretty as all the pictures make it seem. its really polluted, and we get hardly any pure sunlight during the winter months (it's always cloudy), so unless you come during the summer, the weather will actually make you feel depressed.

my school. we have something like 3,000 students, and we also have one of the highest rates of school violence (fights/shootings/gang fightz, werd.) in new yorks state, including nyc. pretty neat eh?
buttttt, i love it here and wouldn't want to be anywhere else. there are tons of good things here, i just find the not-so-good things more interesting. :p

well it's super close to Canada so there's a plus right there :p
my family actually went to Niagara Falls when I was like, six. it was definitely cloudy and gray, but pretty. I remember the tourist boat rides that go through the falls.
and apparently people go over the falls in barrels sometimes.

yes, i'd much rather live in canada. toronto is my city of choice.
and yeah, people go over the falls in barrels, boats, inflatable rafts etc. they're rather stupid. best story: one guy walked to the edge of the falls to commit suicide, & in the river with the strongest current, got 2 inches from the edge and changed his mind. then he had to wait 4 hours to be saved. what a nutjob!

I live in NSW about ten minutes out of Byron Bay. I do really like Byron, but I don't think I'd like to raise a family there. It's a little too busy for me. I think we're going to end up in Lennox Head, because it's not too big, and it's near the ocean, and it has a nice park for Indie to play in.
There's no way I could live in the city.
Yep, I'm a square.

It's not so bad once you forget about the rest of the world.

Everyone here is such a bogan. There's nothing to do and only one internet cafe in the telephone book. And it smells in here.

it was in Ballina. and it was LAME, apparently. Anything that has pete murray as a headliner would be pretty boring, i reckon.

Yeah, I didnt see the lineup. But I saw that it was in Ballina, and I was all "Why would anyone hold a music festival in Ballina?"
Cos you know, it's basically the same as holding a music festival in Lismore.

But with like 6 times the amount of old people who enjoy complaining about fun.

Lots of people went, because it is, in fact, near many, many things.

I don't like Ballina. Not at all.
It's kind of compulsory Shannon-family holiday territory.
And the only thing there is beach and sunburn. Both of which I hate.
