I was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on this. Do you prefer to see TLE in a pub, big show or at a festival?

One of my favourite TLE gigs ever was when I was front row centre at BDO in 2003(?). I nearly died a few times but it was worth it.
However, nowadays I'm more of a pub fan. From intimate tiny gigs like The Longnecks at Karova Lounge in Ballarat, to bigger ones at The Corner Hotel.
Actually, I saw Gyroscope at the Ferntree Gully Hotel a few months ago and I thought that was a really good venue. It was easy to see the band from different parts of the room and there was a really long bar down one side of the room as well as one at the back, so you didn't have to wait long to get a drink :) Despite the bogan factor of the FGT, I'd like to see TLE play there.

LOL, yep the bogan factor there is massive, adds to the entertainment

Not sure about a pub, but a smaller venue would be nice :)
But the most important thing though is where the boys want to play because they'll give their best performance in a venue that they want to be at.
Congrats on ya first thread Beth!
Anyhoo, best way to see TLE is with a time machine taking you back to the Gypsy Bar 1997 and watching them belt it out, with maybe 50 of the local riff raff looking on, then pissing off when the main act (Jar) come on. lol
Small gigs get my vote all the way. But it's not how they appeal to the masses.

Definitely smaller club like shows.

The best way to see them, in your own back yard. Boy, that would be a dream.
But realistically, it would definitely be at a pub gig. Because I'd like to sit down sometimes rather than breaking my arm in a mosh pit, like what happened to a mate of mine.

You want to watch living end sitting down!!?!?!

Some times i like to take a break. Its not easy moshing all night.

just because you stand it doesnt mean you have to mosh

This is a hard question.
Personally I like to see them at the smallest gigs possible, cos I'm a selfish person who wants them all to myself!
But I think it really depends on what the crowd is like. Festivals always go off for the boys, and it fun jumping and singing with thousands of other fans who only really came just to see TLE. Tassie shows are always heaps of fun, because they're so rare and everyone is so pumped - even if the sound in those venues are crap. Even watching them suppport one of Australias biggest band from way up the back with the bogans was completely different, but equally as fun experience. The smaller shows I've been to have reasons for being small...and in those instances they have affected the way the crowd acts - they haven't been terrible (all shows I've been to have been awesome), but probably not as much fun as some of the festival or Tassie shows.

Normally i like smaller gigs, but my fav was Sidetrack'd festival in 2007, because it was the the horse races, everyone was in fancy dress, so no one was moshing or anything. First time i got to stand in the front center for a festival and not have people crushing me or rubbing up to close haha!

Favourite shows were the two gigs at The Gov in 2003...smaller venue the better in my opinion.
And to those who question sitting down...I'd like to sit down occasionally..when you've got a bad back that aches an hour in, you don't really want it ruining your favourite act.
I loved the gig at HQ the other month though, tiered floors meant you could stand at the back of the mosh and still see, and the stair rails were a good prop for the bad back bunch!

Yeah the first time i saw them at their own show in Perth was 2004, and the place only held 300 people. Now they always play at The Metro which is huge, but i really doubt they'd ever play at Amps again.

Haha, I know what you mean!
I love living here. I get them all to myself for a whole tour, lolz.

I love them at any venue. As long as I am near the front I don't care how many 100's (or 1000's) of people are behind me. I'd loved to see them somewhere "different" though. I reckon boarding an aircraft carrier with a ticket in my hand for a TLE concert would just about fit the bill.

Saw them at the House of Blues in Hollywood during their State of Emergency tour. Best show of my life, inspired me musically and left me wanting them to come back! :woot:

Yeah, seeing them play at that arena in Melbourne last year (?) was definitley fun, but also the most plain living end show i've been too.

It just seemed too... safe?
It was a huge venue with lot's of whitenoise bandwagon kids (no disrespect, just saying) and the set list really didn't have any surprises.
contrast to seeing Grinspoon a couple of times this year in Traralgon and the corner where the venues were small, full of die hard fans and we got all sorts of old school treats (Dead Cat, Better off Dead, American party bomb, Pedestrian, Don't change, damn straight)

^^ they closed with it last time i saw them :D
as for TLE, im not sure which is the better way. i mean, ive seen some really small shows, as well as some really big ones and they can pull off both venues.
i liked how the smaller gigs were much more personal, but when they played ANZ stadium at olympic park last year, songs with a good singalong just went off. yep. my 2c.

Yeah, i suppose thousands of people singing along is a pretty spiritual experience, but i'd still go the club gig!

You should have gone! They closed with it at our gig too!
That was probably one of the best Grinspoon gigs I've been too. Except for maybe the first time I saw them in 2002?....2003?...2004? I don't remember when it was or what album, but it was at City Hall and it was a pretty awesome gig!

Yeah I think it's definitely a case of personal preference, but either way it won't effect the boys' performance too much. Yeah I was at the Olympic park gig in NSW and it was great, and the Hisense gig in Melbourne the boys were on fire! They were in top form, probably more so than some of the smaller venue gigs I've seen, I wouldn't really call the Hisense gig plain. But as an audience member I definitely felt a bit removed in larger venues like Hisense and ANZ stadium which was really annoying. Smaller venues are definitely the best place as an audience member.
In terms of the setlist I think it's harder to throw suprises in, as their back catalogue continues to grow, but I thought 'End of the World' was a bit of a suprise for the Hisense gig. Also the flinstones theme jam thingy was quick thinking when Andy broke his high hat, it was also a pleasant suprise.

I agree. 500 (or even less) is the perfect size of audience

I personally like them in a club gig, like HQ in Adelaide. Seems to be a good venue for those kinds of bands.
Haven't had a chance to see them at the thebby, but i imagine that would be pretty amazing.

Thebby's definately a good fit for them, though i immensely enjoyed them at HQ. I know they played there when it was Heaven back in 2001, but didn't see that show myself. Good venue. The steps and handrails were good for the old fogies like me to lean on an enjoy a bevvy while watching some TLE magic.

Good vibe, i wonder what it's like for the artists. It's sure as hell better than the shed TLE played in in 2006. Whoah.
