I dunno bout you guys, but in the your guitars thread, I like seeing peoples guitars. Not random talk about what they should/are getting next.
Thought it'd be good to get some advice on stuff too.
I really need a new amp. The old Yamaha 10 watter is reliable but well, it's ordanairy. I need something alot better now that I have a decent guitar. My price range is probably around $500 and i've mainly been looking at Vox's. Any advice would be appreciated
Can't help you with the amp situation, but I'm also requesting some advice.
I'm thinking of getting a keyboard (musical not the nerdy computer type) soonish. Just for shits and giggles really. I only want to be able to learn some chords and such on it, and by no means take it as serious as guitar. With this in mind, are there any good cheapish models around? Whats the price range for these?

probably some new friends.
I hear you can order ones in from Uganda pretty cheap, Mick.

for some reason i really only look at higher end amps that i hope to get some day...
i currently have a workhorse bass amp (i think its actually a keyboard amp) its a Laney CK160 (think thats the model, 160 watts) that i got second hand out of the trading post for 350 bucks, it kinda smells like its burning sometimes, but it still goes...
so advicewise, try the trading post

Some of the Marshall Valvestate models are nice for that sort of money. you should look at some of those- they have them at the rehearsal studios we go to and they do the job well enough.

I wouldn't get anything less than this. It looks really great, so it must be really great. I also includes a little man inside it to make you play better. note: Man does not include batteries. Its the bach signature model. This will make you famous.
http://www.bohemiapiano.cz/grandpianos/grandpiano.jpg
Seriously though. It depends what you want to do. If you actually want to develop some piano skills it is probably best to get a keyboard with hammer action keys. Its like the equivilant of starting on a steel string acoustic as opposed to a classical guitar. If you get something with synth-action or semi-weighted keys you will struggle to play a real piano because of the differences in key pressure. If you just want to screw around anything goes. Grab a cheap yamaha or roland or something off ebay. I'd be choosing one with full sized keys though, not compact (smaller than my fingers) keys.
Yeah the weighted keys are a good idea, but in general, they are pretty expensive. I've got a proper player piano at home already, its just extremely loud and I can't really bash it at night when everyone is asleep. I basically want a cheap little keyboard that has a volume control so the entire house doesn't have to deal with me playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star poorly :p

if it's interesting boost pedals you are after you can do better than a tubescreamer- I know they are the standard and everything and chris has them but you can do better..... depending on money of course. 3 pedals I would recommend: first the TC electronic pedals- any of them in that range they are all good, I have the dual distortion which is not at all crunchy but a really incredible crisp drive. I love it. OR the HBE powerscreamer, wicked little pedal which unfortunately got stolen from me... wish I could tell you more about it... all I know is I loved it. OR if you are feeling really minted and can find a way to justify it to yourself look for a Klon Centaur- really simple pedal... but the holy grail of boost pedals. The guy who makes them keeps the circuitry a secret so no one can copy his sound. It's a simple but very very very good sounding pedal.

Yeah, a couple of months ago while I was in townsville, they had a few different Gretsch's there, the cheapest was the anniversary model, I think it was that..

Next guitar will be a White Falcon. I HAVE played one, go to VENUE MUSIC, Sydney, and they have a whole tonne of Gretsches theyre willing to let you try. Sounds unreal through a Fender Tweed with a bit of Reverb and Fuzz.
And the White Falcon is on the top of my guitar wanted list. To me, one of the best things money can buy (OK, now I'm getting a little carried away) ;)

I don't want to put people off buying that $4000 or whatever Gretsch but unless you already have a good amp, there are better ways you can spend the money.
jessebelle
01-23-2007, 07:31 PM
It's people's own choice what they spend their money on, my whole family thinks I'm crazy but I really don't care what people say.
$4000?!
Well, that's put me off enough Julian.

Actually I think the white falcon is minimum $4500, I think thats what Mick told me... I can't remember..
Julian
01-23-2007, 07:38 PM
I actually don't know how much a white falcon in and yes, it is your own money. Spend it how you like. But ask any guitar experts and they'll tell you a good amp is more important than a good guitar. But of course some beginners get it in there head that they want a white falcon purely because it's what their idol plays. Again, i'm not saying you are one of these people.
You'll pretty much be able to get any guitar for the price of the White Falcon. So yeah, don't make up your mind straight away. Personally, i'd rather put TV Jones pickups in my Artcore(Same type as in higher end Gretschs). It won't sound the same or as good as a Gretsch but it'll be a few grand cheaper
jessebelle
01-23-2007, 07:42 PM
That's why I decided to play one first before definately made my mind up.
I agree with you about the amp thing, the amp I have is fairly good, and I'm happy with it.
Julian
01-23-2007, 07:44 PM
Fair enough. All I was saying is that you can get ANYTHING for that price so don't just try the white falcon. Heck, you could get a Gibson Les Paul and a higher end strat for the price of the White Falcon
Fritz
01-23-2007, 08:16 PM
ahhh all this white falcon bashing is killing me hehe
I've played teles, strats, firebirds, sg's and all sorta of gretsch's live.
Hell...... I've played a '57 Les paul and a '56 strat live before. The falcon sound is a sound I will never get bored of. Its so crisp. A gibson les paul or SG is fantastic for me when I play in a hard rock band for obvious reasons. If im doing a blues trio or simular i'll play a fender through maybe a little deluxe reverb. I go through stages of liking a Gibson for a week or a Fender for a week but i've never ever got bored of playing one of my falcons or any gretschs.
Live.. if its not hard hard loud jnn jnn rock or cleaned up twang the falcon is always my number 1 option. Yes it looks like a pimp mobile but out of all the guitars Ive played the falcon feels the nicest to play, i feel the most creative when i play it (eg. when i play an SG all my mind tells me to play is licks off the let there be rock album). I really really really really honestly believe if you falcon haters played a gig with one you'd change your mind at least just a little. After playing guitars that live that are worth anywhere from $30.000 to $100.000 and still deciding the falcon is generally the better guitar, a price tag of $6999 for a falcon really dosnt seem too bad. I've played those guitars from the 50's, played the highest end custom shop gibons and fenders.
Hell...... If any of you falcons haters are playing a sydney gig soon let me know and i'll let you borrow one of mine. Then make your decision. I actually am pretty confident to say I bet most of the posters on this forum never really have spent 'a great deal of time' playing all different types of fenders, gibsons, gretsch's, rickies ect. They all are really fantastic guitars in their own right. I'm just lucky that i have a the chance to play all of these guitars regularly. I've never actually met more than maybe hmmmm a dozen guys who have aswell. Thats why im pretty positive most of you guys havent either. Except sammas of course lol
Remember I always used to abuse strats??? well i dont anymore. Why? Cos i actually got one, played it for hours and hours and gigged with it. I love strats. But I also love many other types. Gretsch's are at the top of my list though.
I just dont really see the point in slamming guitars that are obviously great guitars, just cos you think they are ugly and cos you havent played one for more than 30 mins.
......................... but thats just me.
:) carry on
Julian
01-23-2007, 08:26 PM
I wasn't slamming you or anyone that bought White Falcons Mick. I was just saying to not get a White Falcon because one of your idol plays one without checking out what's on offer to spend a hell of alot of money on.

you can add me to your list of 12.
Jess, what amp do you have? you need something pretty decent to do a white falcon justice. There's no point in playing it through a tiny 10 amp peavy or like a shitty roland cube or anything- you'll end up being so disappointed. I know it sounds like people are being kill joys and can't stop you from getting what you want, but if you want to do an incredible guitar some justice then you need to have a nice amp first.

words defending the White Falcon
Very wise post Mick, I agree with you entirely. For the record, my WF bashing post in that other thread was based on pure cosmetics. I didn't get into the sound, how it plays or anything like that. I just wanted to make the point that not all people think the White Falcon looks hot. :)
I haven't played a White Falcon. Ever. I'm sure that if I ever have a go at one I wil be very impressed, I'm not going to deny that for a second. Its just that currently in my life I haven't really looked at guitars in the 5 grand cost bracket. When I grow a pair and decide to spend that much on a guitar, I will definately look at the Gretsch models (I probably won't play the White Falcon, but I'd definately have a go at the Black Falcon. I'm assuming they are essentially the same just a different colour?) as well as the LP, SG, Fender, Rickenbacker, etc. But until my $400 strat rip-off Ibanez breaks, I'm in no hurry. I love that Ibanez's neck too much to get rid of it.
My next guitar purchase would probably be a set of pickups for my Ibanez actually. Any reccomendations for a humbucker and two single coils (humbucker at the bridge) that will give me a screaming sound when playing licks, a warm sound when playing rythym, and won't make me sounding like a synthesiser?

i have a set of seymour duncan humbuckers on my godin- really really nice pickups. You should take a look at their range. that or look at some DE-9000 Black Doves or something. I played the strat-o-sonic with them on and I have to say as strats go it was the best sound i have ever heard out of one.

it could well have been a sub-company. canadaians have this tax law that gives a company certain gratuities and exemptions in its first year or so of business. So godin keeps creating sub companies (like seagul and art and lutherie) to build guitars and still take advantage of the tax cuts. It might be one of their alternate companies. I'm not canadian by the way; I just have a lot of pointless guitar knowledge.

To be technically correct, fender are using roland midi pickups in these new guitars. Roland invented the technology. You don't need to buy a guitar that has it anyway, you can buy the pickup and rack interface and add it to any electric guitar.
thelivingvines
01-23-2007, 10:07 PM
yeah, c'est vrai mon ami. The synth access comes from the midi output on the godins. And I believe they worked with Roland on its conception and intend for you to use their equipment.
If you do it your way, don't you end up with a massive and hideous looking box attatched to the body of your guitar?

as opposed to drilling holes in your guitar? You can get both intrusive and non-intrusive kits though, so if you don't want a black box hanging off your guitar you can install it.
Godin didn't work with roland at all, they just borrowed the concept.

Because its a roland patented concept. Godin uses RMC to make the pickups.

Thought I'd introduced myself and ask a few questions, I'm Matt, 22 from Melbourne. Was a member of the old board and just re-joined. Now I've been reading that everyone (well alot) of you players like vintage fender amps etc..
I've been looking into upgrading my amp and the only thing that's appealed to me has been the supersonic from what I've played so far which isn't alot. Does anyone know where a good second hand store is in victoria? International Ebay comes up with a bit of potential but is it too much of a pain in the arse to import and buy a step down/electrical plug converter?
P.S Happy Australia Day.. Good save the queen, coz nothing's gunna save the English cricketers.

went to try a hotplate today, was really impressed with it, so I got it. Really looking forward to putting it to some solid recording work as well. Also tried out the supersonic; was actually really disappointing like Mick said. I think I am going to stick with my deluxe- really no need for anything else. It's the perfect sound for me.

quick question- when i hook the hotplate up to the amp, can I put my effects board in that set up somewhere? i mean rather than between the guitars and the amp, between the head and the combo instead? that possible? if so, before or after the hotplate?

whats a hotplate? is it the board thing that holds your effects like in a stack?
im looking to buy some pedals in the near future problem is money, mum reduced allowance from $50 a week to $30, bummer.

A hotplate is a little box that goes in between the cab and head to make the amp quieter, without losing it's natural distortion. They're about $600 I think.

under the bit that you put your foot on, there might be a thing which you should undo a little bit and position the pedal so that when you tighten the thing you just loosended it will clamp onto the drum. if its not that (because i dont know if thats the bit you have the problem with) then just tighten everything and it might help

I bought a Squier Bullet Strat today. $200 and one pickup. My most sound investment I've made lately. Although I love my 335, I don't want to break it in an overenthusiastic live performance or something. This strat is so cheap I can afford to buy one for every day of the week or something. Sounds good too. I'm thinking about stripping the paint and painting it a cooler colour. It's a dark blue colour atm.

Well this thread is close enough to not start another "what should I buy" thread
My dad mentions something the other day like "Well do you want a bass or a hollowbody for your birthday". It came up in conversation at dindin out with my GF's fam at a restaraunt. I said hollowbody and have been thinking about one since
I just got my 1st guit last birthday(May). I've said that it's not the guitar, it's the player and made a fishing reference(some of you may remember. I've improved quite a bit and have been able to play a bit more difficult things(still suck though) but I'd like to get a hollowbody. Sorry... electric hollowbody(like Chris' WF) yah... Anyways... I think Gibson may be too expensive and Fender, eh... Yahmaha... yah... Maybe used but I was wondering if anyone know's of a nice sounding E-H. I'ma hack, but something that sounds nice and isn't too horribly expensive... like under 250perhaps(after seeing most, yah right)(I think there was one at SamAsh that was just over 250... I THINK!
Yamaha's AES1500(B) looked nice(too much $). I like the Archtop look. Ibanez was cheaper(few hundred) A few Gibson's looked cool, but I think they may be a bit too much $ for me :(
Ayways... discuss, lol. On Fri, dad has something to do out that way, so we may stop by and I'll play a few :D
Save up and buy B.B Kings signature Lucille. Thats about 5 grand Australian though, hahah.
I hear Ibanez artcore do ok.
Julian
03-05-2007, 03:54 PM
B.B Kings Lucille is a semi hollow though, I think. You can only get a true hollowbody sound from a hollowbody
There really isn't alot in terms of cheaper hollowbodies. Epiphone have their Casinos at around $1300, Fender have nothing, Yamaha have some semi hollows and some older hollows that I don't think are made anymore. Best bet is an Ibanez Artcore. There's alot in the series from around 600-1500AUD. I have an AF86 and no complaints here. Once you get more money to spend up the track you can put some filtron style pickups(TV Jones etc found in higher end Gretschs) and you will get a similar Gretsch sound for a hell of a lot cheaper. If that's what you want, that is. Not sure if you want one cause Chris has one, or if you're heavily into Jazz and stuff.

I played Jazz in high school, alto sax, but on my guit I play mostly rock. Hoobastank, Metallica, TLE... some classic rock. I play as much as I can, between school and playing BattleField2, lol. I just love the look of H-Bs
I was looking at the Ibanez's and the AF's looked cool. All the H-Bs are ArtCore anyways
I'll play it before I buy it and less than 466 list price and MusicFriend says 349... sounds good, though I may wait for a sale or something. Just still a tad too much for me
Anyone know of any problems. On the AFS74 someone wrote they had trouble with the tuning always getting out of whack and pickups and scrapeguard always loosening up
Julian
03-06-2007, 06:47 PM
Hmm I ended taking up the pickguard on mine for cosmetic reasons. I have heard about those problems but i'm fairly sure it just needs tightening which anyone can do. Mine isn't great with tuning, it comes out when I do lots of bends. But with new tuners and a good setup, you shouldn't have a problem.
Oh and hollowbodies don't handle distortion well at all. You will have trouble playing Metallica and anything with high levels of distortion. Go down to your music store, plug it into a decent sized amp and play with the most distortion you'll ever play with at home or on stage. Humbuckers suit classic rock and metal but not on a hollowbody. Not saying it can't be done though
Armistice
03-07-2007, 05:57 AM
At home, when messing around, I'll have the gain all the way up... but I usually just play without hooking it up because my electric is plenty loud by itself, which I like.
I'll never play on stage. Also, if I DO get a distortion pedal, it'd be something like a Rock Distortion or Classic Rock or w/e sounds good... nothing crazy. I'd try it out first though. Sam Ash has a big board with pedals on it you can try. I'll get a pedal after I get the hollowbody, though I'll see how it sounds on both the HB and my electric.
Metallica doesn't sound like it uses a lot of distortion
Yah, bending and using the whammy. My whammy can make it go a halfstep to wholestep flat, depending on how hard I use it
People say tuners... do they mean the tuning PEGS?
I went to a pawn shop today and saw a Michael Key, anyone know of them?
Also, if it doesn't have a tremolo or whammy,(w/e it's called) can you put one on? I'd rather get one with it so that it's there when I do need it... I rarely use mine
And I assume that a Humbucker are the places where the sound is picked up, the rectangular things? I don't know much of the lingo for guitars, lol :D
And I assume that a Humbucker are the places where the sound is picked up, the rectangular things? I don't know much of the lingo for guitars, lol :D
Correct. They are the pickups which pickup the vibration from the strings. There are two types of pickups, Single Coils and Humbuckers. Humbuckers are generally the fatter ones that look like two single coils joined together. They both sound differently. A lot of people like humbuckers for a classic rock type sound

Have you looked at any samicks, they make some resonably cheep holow bodys, my first "real" guitar i purchased was a samick greg benit royal, it was prety cheep in comparison to the other holowbodys on the market at the time but the good thing about it is....its kind fo a fake holow body......what i mean is its got the fholes going into cavitys but the majority of the guitar si actualy solid so it will handel a fair bit of drive. Myne also looks quite nice and im still relativly happy with it even after jumping up to a gretsch.

Yes, you can put something like a bigsby on. But it won't be cheap. First you'll be paying for the parts and then unless you have alot of luthier knowledge, you'll be paying for someone to install it. I don't think something like that is easy so it'll cost alot.
Some Artcores do come with tremelos. I haven't seen one in Adelaide but in America, there's a good chance you'll find one. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-Artcore-AFS75T-Electric-Guitar?sku=519452
There's one there that was actually recommended to me but unfortulantley I couldn't find one. Sexier than most Gretschs imo
Oh, and there is no such thing as a 'fake hollowbody'. If it isn't fully hollow it is a semi hollowbody and it's a fairly different sound. It's not just the same as a hollowbody but can handle distortion. Not to say they're no good, might even be the better option for you.
thelivingvines
03-08-2007, 06:25 PM
if anyone is looking for an amazing hollowbody, but can't cut the price of a gretsch then may i recommend to sir this little number
http://godinguitars.com/godinmontrealp.htm
be not alarmed. I have a Godin, not this exact model but one with the piezzo and humbuckers, and it's a simply outstanding guitar. At times I would even say I prefer it to my Gretsches. The neck is just unbelievable and the wood is nothing but the best and amazing to look at. It's something a little bit different and something a little bit special. There are so so so many sounds you can get out of godin's like this, its friggin ridiculous. The action is so smooth, feels like you are playing on silk. These are amazingly crafted guitars. When I bought mine- at a time when i knew very little about guitars- the dude in the shop said (after I had paid the cash) " I have worked with Godin's all my life, they are amazing guitars. If you look after that thing, you have a guitar for life." Alright, 3 years isn't life, but it's done nothing but impress me so far.

I saw some Humbuckers that had 2 rows of dots and there were 2 of them. Is there a bottom, mid, and top? Like on electric guitars, or even though it looks like theres 2 on 1, it actually just one. Wait, even though there's 2 of them, do you still get mid, or are you stuck with top or bottom?
Julian: Yah, that AFS75T is nice. I was going to try for the AFS75D... it's a bright light blue... but I'm wondering if I want the light blue colour or the darker blue of the 75T
The price is ok for those... 300ish. I may see if I can find one a bit cheaper or a sale. I'm quite pinched for money so that's the reason.
Julian: Yah, I though it would be quite a bit for the tremolo. Now is THAT style called a tremolo and on an electric it's a whammy? Or are they interchangable?

if anyone is looking for an amazing hollowbody, but can't cut the price of a gretsch then may i recommend to sir this little number
http://godinguitars.com/godinmontrealp.htm
be not alarmed.
Godin's are beautiful guitars (and Godin is a Canadian Company). I have played the Montreal model and loved the action on it but it was designed as a jazz guitar and I wouldn't recommend it for this situation. The price is a little hefty, but seriously they are quite nice. If they come out with a model that a more classic look i might purchase one later in my life.

you hardly see them outside of canada. Such a shame as they are amazing guitars. I bought mine while I was over there and I love it so so much. They are so well made and just feel incredible. I never played the montreal, it's the only hollowbody they do though really. I have the LGX SA, it's dribble worthy.

I have played the LGX SA and would have bought it if i had the money, it's definitely a top grade guitar. I ended buying a Gretsch G5120 because it was cheaper and looked cooler.

i think vibrato is the correct name and they are sometimes called whammy/tremolo bars (something like that anyway

Played some sort or hollowbody at Alto Loma Music yesterday and sounded good. I can't remember the brand... started with a "D" I think. Action was nice and neck thickness was good too. THough... it didn't have a tremolo bar
I did play it with a distortion pedal, one that plays light and massive dist., and it still sounded good. Guy quoted 350. I still need to check Sam Ash

It was probably a DeArmond guitar of some sort.
http://www.dearmondguitars.com/x155.html
DeArmond was originally a pickup manufacturer. It was purchased by Guild guitars, than Guild was purchased by Fender and raped and pillaged in the name of business, Just like the fate of so many other great guitar brands... Epiphone for example.

I looked on MusicFriend and I believe that it was a Dean. The knobs look the same and I remember a short name with a D... and what I thought was a cresant were actually the wings

I'm buying a new amp, I haven't settled on one yet, but at the moment this one is looking pretty good.
http://www.voxamps.co.uk/valvetronix/ad15-30-50-100vt.asp#s3
In the 50 watt.
Fender makes a similar amp with 2 12" speakers for similar money but I don't really like the sound of Fenders, the ones I've played have all been kinda bassy.

i have the effects pedal with the same valve reactor circuit that all those amps have- the tonelab se- its a great foot pedal, compared with others like it out there the distortions are such a cut above everything else out there. You can still tell its not a proper valve amp, but the tones are great for the money you pay. hope that helps!

I'm not phased whether the amp is valve or not. I just want it to sound the way I like it. And from the Vox I played the other day, that's pretty much exactly the sound I'm going for.

Man, I wanted to get out to Guitar Centre over the weekend! They were having this Green Tag sale. 30-60% off!!!
I think I may go for the Ibanez AFS75T... and get it red... like the one Dean(I think) I played at Alto Loma
Still need to hit up Sam Ash
My buddy got an Epiphone acoustic... I think (By looking on their site right now) an EL-00. Sounds well and action is... well it's an acoustic
O! O! O! This beauty!

Played 2 Ibanez on Fri. On was an AG I think, the other was the silver AFS75D/T (don't know) Liked it, played well
I just have a question about the whammy. It hangs over the scratch plate but won't go any higher to go over the strings. The whammy I have on mine now can go back and forthPAST the strings. I ust find it easier to use if it's over the strings. One song it helps on is Mötley Crüe's Kickstart My Heart where the 1st 3 notes are prebent whammy notes(simulate a car driving and switching gears) It's easy to do with mine, but with the whammy locked so low, I relaly couldn't bent AND pick at the same time. Is it more for strum a chord and then bent it
Is it typical for the whammy to be like that, just curious. I have one more guit to try before making my decition(the one above[can't find it though])
