If the Hawks forward line fires, the Cats are screwed. And given Buddy had a quiet game last week I think he'll probably bag 7-8.

The GF is pretty close... midway through the 3rd and the scores are level.

Was out at Transport last night and saw Adam Cooney with a couple of the Doggies boys. Went up and said congratulations! :)

Great game of footy today! Despite some of the shocking umpiring in the first half!My prediction came true, the Hawks did indeed win it! :D I won a bit of money as well, so that's always a nice bonus haha

Hodge played friggen mint. I said at 3qrt time he'd get the medal cos he was keeping their backline afloat, spewing I didn't put some money on him before the game! Congrats on the $75.

It was a great game, I was kinda hoping the Hawks would win so glad that they did.

I got my nails done yesterday & while I was there, there was a lady who was getting married today & her three bridesmaids. The bride had moved up from Melbourne 4 years ago and the bridesmaids had come up specifically for the wedding.
They had the final playing on their mobiles, they were so pissed off at her for the date clash! All three were Cats fans.

He's done it all year, great move to get him out of the middle... they've got such a strong centre line with Mitchell and Bateman and then throw into the mix likes of Lewis, Osborne, Young, Birchall who can all play in there.

Strider
09-29-2008, 12:22 PM
Their midfield is definitely one of their best assets, but I think it's their forward line which is easily the most devestating part of the team. Hodge single handedly kept them in the game with his great leadership down back. Despite being under an injury cloud, he managed to get his team over the line. To me that's what you call a true captain.

private_eye
09-29-2008, 12:35 PM
true their froward line is awesome but i reckon their backline is the most devastating. When they have Lewis, Hodge and Guerra down there, there's 3 of the best kicks in the game. Each can easily kick 50 off a step and it's off the halfback line that they set up all their attack, rather than through the midfield like a lot of clubs.

Definitely they've got the most well-rounded team... Geelong have the best midfield but as we saw on Saturday there forward line can often go missing, and they've got no real 'big names' down there. One of the stats i saw was that only 2 geelong players kicked over 5 goals in a game this year, i think it was Mooney and possibly Stokes...

I like Hodge as a captain, he seems to be more influential than Mitchell although maybe we just see him directing traffic more... Mitchell seems like the biggest arrogant fuck goin around

Strider
09-29-2008, 12:38 PM
Mitchell is a bit of a hack, but I think because he gets tagged so heavily each week his influence is usually quite minimal which gives other guys the chance to run around in his place. I actually don't rate the Hawks backline as highly as Geelongs, it's just their pressure on Geelong was phenominal. And they kept it up for the whole game (despite half their team falling to injuries!) Hawks just fired all their engines, that was the difference between them and the kitties.

Strider
09-29-2008, 05:18 PM
Nah, Ablett would have only won the medal if the cats won. But unfortunately he couldn't take his side over the line, Hodge did, therefore he well and truly deserved the medal.

Wow Geelong played really bad... Hawthorn played pretty good, but they were pretty nervous looking for most of the first half too... Geelong kicked themselves out of it in the second (and third for that matter). Hawthorn did a fairly decent job of finishing them off in the last quarter though... My two cents, a little bit annoyed but what can you do?

Ben reed
09-29-2008, 07:08 PM
his dad won the medal when his team didnt win...
and its not a matter of geelong playing bad because
1. we got the most clearances
2. we got the most inside 50s
but we just didnt kick straight
plus harry taylor dropped the ball like a dickhead...

private_eye
09-29-2008, 08:10 PM
it doesn't matter how many inside 50's you get if you don't convert them to goals. and that's exactly what happened. ablett was very very good but hodge was more effective. did you notice how many handballs ablett had in the first half? i mean not there's anything wrong with that, but he is much more effective when he's kicking.

and blaming it on taylor is ridiculous cos he played awesome. for him and scarlet to keep roughead and franklin to 4 goals between them is an excellent effort.

Julian
09-29-2008, 08:14 PM
Selwood was much better than Ablett imo.

Ben reed
09-29-2008, 08:46 PM
yeah i know our kicking and ineffectiveness was our downfall
but the thing about taylor was sociological
it kinda indicated that we gave up but not really, but in a way...
i dunno
but yeah they did a good job to keep them to 4 goals

Strider
09-29-2008, 10:43 PM
I personally thought the umpiring in the first half was extremely biased towards Geelong. They were getting free kicks left right and centre, and most of them resulted in goals. Geelong pulled a few bullshit goals out of their arses, its' just they missed a few crucial goals in the second half when they needed them. Wasn't there day, I think they were a little intimidated by the amount of pressure Hawks were putting on them. Hawks deserved it, Hodge deserved the medal :)

2009 Fixture is out.

You have a glimpse of it here: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=511808
or alternatively suss out your own team's fixture here http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,24545148-19742,00.html.

ALSO, Telstra Dome will be called Etihad Stadium as of next season. Who else reckons that's a really, really, shit name? Even shortening it is shit.
"Where's that game being played?"
"Etihad"

No more "Dome or G?". I'm probably still going to refer to it as "the dome" for convenience reasons.

Just heard about the Etihad deal... why are all our arenas suddenly being handed over to foreign companies? Or should I say being bought? Etihad is an airline company that started in Abu Dhabi, and Hisense (formerly Vodafone Arena) is a Chinese company that sell home products and electronics. It's madness. I think that Etihad replacing Telstra is a poor move, it'll never have the same ring to it - but it'll probably end up being called the Eti or something. And why is it no longer a "dome"?

D'you reckon bands could acquire the naming rights to a stadium or arena?

worry_rock
10-24-2008, 07:37 PM
I understand WHY they're doing it (we get a fuckload of money out of the deal). The deal coincides with the airline doing flights to/from(?) Melbourne. It just sounds shit. I reckon Etihad Arena would sound better than Etihad Stadium.

And before it was Telstra Dome, it was Colonial Stadium. My understanding is that it became "Dome" to avoid confusion with the already existing Telstra Stadium.

I reckon it should remain the "(Company's name) Dome", so we can still call it The Dome for continuity and convenience.

And in answer to your question, I doubt many bands would be able to afford naming rights. Let alone want to... they have more exciting and dubious things to squander their money on :p If they had the money though, I think there'd be no qualms with naming a stadium after a band.

It's madness. I think that Etihad replacing Telstra is a poor move, it'll never have the same ring to it - but it'll probably end up being called the Eti or something

I've already heard many nicknames for it. Like "The Sandpit" (referring to the arabs, as well as the Dome's questionable grounds), but the most popular I've heard is "Jihad Stadium" haha.

I'm glad us West Aussie didn't sell out, we had the option of renaming Subi Oval but we coined against it. I guess Vic teams are in a different situation tho, they need the $$$.

Game tonight was pretty good! I think we kinda got screwed over with that fact the Irish got a point they shouldn't have, and a few decisions resulted in goals (ie, whistle getting blown and all the aussies stopping, then the irish ran into an open goal. What the?)

I reckon Eagles got the cream of the crop in terms of drafts this year!! Couldn't be happier with our selections. Good to see a huge portion of the top 10 were West Aussies. Just goes to show how much talent we have over this side ;)
