haha my dad used to play for the dolphins in our local league... they still hold the record for most premierships in a row: 4
but yeah i got born into a geelong supporting family and i don't think thats ever going to change

Eagles. 2006 PREMIERS!!!
you mean 2006 losers.... Im sorry. i really hate WCE. i was at the Adelaide vs WCE Prelim match last year, and Adelaide led the whole wat until 10 minutes til final siren. Straight after Biglands went down we got smashed in ruck.... Awww WEC...

Well if we BEAT Adelaide in Adelaide twice last year, then surely we are worthy of 2006 premiers. You're just a sour grape I'm sorry to say. I actually don't mind Adelaide, I would have rather have played them off in the GF as apposed to destroying their chances in both prelim's in the last 2 years. But that's the way the cookie crumbles :)

Its only because at the end of the year, all our best players were injured. Including the Adel vs WCE. And as soon as our Ruckman went down, we got destroyed. We had no one in ruck, so you just got goals.

I hate Collingwood, don't like the Bulldogs. I have a long standing deep seated dislike/distrust of Port Adelaide that goes waaay back to the days when I used to watch them in the SANFL. My and my friend were North Adelaide supporters.

Excuses excuses. We had about 6 key players out of the 2005 Grand Final (and in games leading up to that, including the Adelaide vs Eagles at Subiaco) but we still were able to win. Good teams should have the depth to cover injuries. And considering Adelaide probably has the best side in the league for depth in their squad, I think that is a poor excuse. I think the real reason we came back and won is because sides get puffed out by the 3rd/4th quarter and then we just run over them. Look what we did to Geelong last year.
Julian

You can't do much when your main ruckman goes down near the end of the game when your back up is a 30+ year old veteran
Strider
01-23-2007, 02:24 PM
Actually, I disagree with that. I've seen sides lose ruckmans in a game and then use small forwards in ruck just as a ploy. And it's worked. At the end of the day (injuries aside) it's the best team on the day.

lol just kidding.
I'd like to think of myself as a calm, reasonable Hawthorn supporter and that I am in no way rabid. Except for when it comes to Essendon. Fuck, I hate those guys. I actually lived by the motto last season that "it didn't matter where Hawthorn came, as long as it was above Essendon." my second goal was "all things are good as long as Essendon finish at the bottom." That didn't quite work out, but it still felt good that Essendon are a steaming pile of shit and are a useless side. That makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
Oh, I also hate any interstate side. Fucking foreigners. But I hate them less than I hate Essendon.

As a true AFL supporter you're supposed to go for one team, and hate all the other teams equally. But for some reason we all tend to have specific teams we hate more than others. And for me that is Sydney!!!

Why do you think the likes of Brad Ottens are nearly impossible to match up on?
He's not? How many 200cm+ forwards kick more than 50 goals a season. A good vertical jump and speed easily make up for 2 or 3 centimetres.
Just for your information Fevola is 191 cm and he averaged 2.8 more goals per game than Ottens last season.
Most centre half forwards these days play running roles and move up the field more anyway.
Grumma
03-06-2007, 10:05 PM
a) Brad Ottens played predominantly in the ruck b) in 2001 he kicked 50+ c) name one defender, that with the 3 cm would get above the 200cm mark d) Ottens, when he does play forward, doesn't play centre half forward and e) imagine how many goals Fevola would've kicked if he was up around the 6'5" mark
Julian
03-06-2007, 10:09 PM
That makes no sense Grumma. You think height has no impact on anything else on your game. Using that theory, if a midfielder was 200cm then he would be better than everyone else.
Wow, he kicked more than 50 goals in a year once. Name some other players over 200cm that have done so
c) name one defender, that with the 3 cm would get above the 200cm mark
I'm confused at what you're asking here?
Grumma
03-06-2007, 10:13 PM
You said that vertical leap takes away 2 or 3 cm in height difference. well if Ottens is over 200cm what defender, even with the extra 2 or 3 cm is gonna be as tall as him.
And as far as height impact thingo; just look at Richo, he's 6'6" and a couple of years ago wouldve been the fittest forward in the comp. Even Jonathon Brown who's 6'5" and 105kg runs a 14 something in the beep test.
And Im pretty sure Paul Salmon did it a few times, and if you take into consideration the proportion of the game resting ruckman spend in the forward line you'd probs find their goals/time in forward line ratio would be similar to that of a full time key forward
Julian
03-06-2007, 10:19 PM
Leo Barry is 184 cm and he could play on Ottens, no trouble. The ratio reasoning is crap. If a 200cm player was a real chance of kicking more than 50+ a season, they would be a permanent forward. In todays game agility and speed are much more important than height.
And that whole what defender even with 3 cm is gonna be as tall as Ottens argument just proves my point. There's not many. Yet Ottens still doesn't dominate.
Grumma
03-06-2007, 10:22 PM
That's cos he doesn't play solely as a forward; you put him at full forward in a team that doesnt play a crap "lets slow down the play" game style like Sydney and he would either kill the crap through teams or they'd have to double and triplet team him.
Go to a local footy match and I garauntee that the big fat gorilla that sits at full forward doing nothing will kick the most goals of anyone in the game if left one on one
Julian
03-06-2007, 10:27 PM
But Ottens doesn't dominate when he is down there. I don't care what works in crap quality local leagues. It may be difficult for you to play against someone tall, maybe because you aren't that great but AFL is a different ball game. I'm not sure if a player over 200cm has ever won the coleman medal. Do you think there is a reason for this? Maybe because shorter players can still be as strong as a 200cm player yet have greater, speed agility and co ordination.

Peter Bell is small as well.
Lets face it, each team requires people of all different heights and sizes. Shorter players are better for midfield & in the forward line, taller players are better in defense.
Ideally the spine of the team should be reasonably tall (Full Forward, CHF, Ruck, CHB, Full Back). Wingers can be medium to tall, flankers are good medium towards talll. Pocket players are usually better short to compliment the full forward or full back. Although it's advisable to have more medium height players in back pocket, whom also have speed and athleticism. There's a very fine line between too tall and too short.

That's because there's never been a 200cm+ permanent full forward before.

He's either joking, or simply stupid. Fervola is easily the best full forward in the league. If he played for a team with an awesome midfield he'd kick double the amount of goals he kicks for Carlton.
I don't really agree with the height thing, if he was heaps more taller he'd be slower. A lot of full backs these days are very agile and strong, which is why I believe the traditional full forward has been taken out of the game. That along with the fact most teams flood.
Burner

i'd say J Brown is the best full forward in the league...only reason he was beaten in the goal tally was because of injuries.

Sure, you gotta be a bit fit to be able to be a musician (concerts will be grinding on the body, and many muso's train before a long tour.), but definately not as fit as say an elite sportsman. Both people are role models, but in completly different ways. Kids who look up to sportsmen should be able to look up to elite, fit, athletic, straight (as in taking no drugs, not getting blotto) people. Not only that, partying and binge drinking and taking drugs constantly will never help your performance on the field ever, and can only hinder it. Being in a band is different because we aren't looking up to our musician heroes because they are fit, elite athletes. We look up to them for the prowress on their instrument, or their song writing abilities.
Furthermore, the more debaucherous bands out there aren't generally aimed at kids as young as those who would admire sports stars. Bands like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zepellin, AC/DC, etc, etc, all known for their drunken, debaucherous ways, aren't for a more older and mature audience, who already know (and maybe experimented) with drugs and clearly know their rights from wrongs. Sports stars attract a younger fanbase. When I was really little, I wanted to be Jason Dunstall, not Keith Richards. Now, I'd rather be doing what Keith Richards is doing instead of playing footy.

Footy is a team sport, and is made up by a lot of staff etc And one rotten apple can spoil it for everyone. Plus lets not forget rock n roll bands are almost 'expected' to act that way. So it doesn't surprise people. You're right tho, bands appeal to an older audience. Especially seeing as most bands can only be see if you are over 18. Sport starts are looked up to by a lot of kids, all ages really.

I love Jawn's post.
I also love Jawn's butt. Every night.
Don't be so rough next time though. If you've had a stressfull day, can we talk about it first to calm you down? I still can't sit down without pain.
