And dont be rude...

Just wondering if anyone out there has any experiance with handheld GPSr and if so, what their recommendations are.

We've been using an older model eTrex, which is ok, but wondering what other models might be better (without paying the earth!)

Anyways, thanks for any tips! :)

My mate's mobile phone has a GPS on it. It acceptable in its accuaracy to get where you need to go. I'm gonna get a Navman for when i drive home this weekend, not necessarily the brand, but something like it. Maybe a TOMTOM which are decent enough and not as expensive. I think you can pick up a decent one for not much more than $300 these days.

Are they handheld tho?

I've looked at a few Garmin models, but wanted some feedback from those who might use them outside the showroom :p

I guess there is no rule about them not being hand held. I'm sure they have a battery pack and they aren't much bigger than a digital camera but I'd say they are prolly better suited to being used for commuting.

I don't have much experiance with the proper hiking ones and such though, but from what i do know they are around the same price but a different operating format altogether. I can't ever imagine one being useful to me unless i wanted to hike the length of the Great Dividing Range.

For those that are happy with the path well travelled, the hand held ones would be little to no use, but Im hoping to find some out of the way places, and so it's becoming necessary :p

Ah yes well now i realise you going to need a proper one for a camping trip or some such. I know that Magellan are excellent. you can sort of check them out here. (http://www.myshopping.com.au/PT--245_GPS_Systems_Handheld_Magellan__fs_2770_2794_e_ _)

Some systems from Garmin can be viewed here. (http://www.thegpsstore.com/Handheld-GPS-C2.aspx)

I think if you go to http://www.thegpsstore.com then you can view different products.

I don't know about reviews of different models comparisms and the like at least there is something to start from.
