ok so i figured we should have a thread dedicated to acoustics.
i dont have one currently but i was thinking that i might get one of these with the money that kevin owes me :D
http://www.fender.com.au/acoustics/acousticelectric/images/telecoustic.jpg
anyone have any opinions on the telecoustics? or have any other acoustic guitar discussion to make?

Erm....dude I wouldn't really call that an acoustic guitar. Sure it has similarities and would sound somewhat like an acoustic, but classing one of those under the same "Acoustic" banner as a Martin or Gibson, is to me is a bit rich haha. Not having a go, just reckon the whole concept is a bit wacky.
Get a real acoustic, you'll never look back. Recording king are great for the money, Martin construction on a Behringer budget :P
Love teles, would never touch a telecoustic ;)

lol that thing looks sooo bad :p
get a cole clark fl3 ;)
they're good.
seriously just spend the money and get like a decent maton (not a 225 or a 325) and you'll be super happy. gibsons are amazing, i hate martins, taylors are awesome ummm a takamine santa fe are awesome!

Dude! Hate Martins? Big call man....have you played some good ones? Their entry level stuff is pretty shite for sure but once you get into the real deal stuff....some of the nicest acoustics I've played I reckon.
We sold a golden era D18 bout a month ago. Freakin amzing guitar. Whole thing felt alive.
Each to their own though I guess :P Maton's probably not a bad bet if you plan to pug in a lot....Probably not my fav acoustically though :S

I dunnno man i just dont like the sound of them very much, and yes the entry level ones are horrible. my mate just bought a fuckin nice one and its nice i will admit. its got the KOA wood i think its a M something i dunno but it has the dual pickup system with the mic in the body. its very nice but not my thing.
my cole fl 3 is beautiful. sounds awesome plugged in and amazing acousticly. the recordings i did with it are amazing.
but even the eric clapton martin i didnt like and the john mayer one wasnt even that much better. i dunnno. the johhny cash one was cool but =]
(my mate works in a botique guitar shop :))

my dad bought a nice Maton a few years back, an ECW80C model. its a great guitar, but its a bit too bright sounding.
i do have to say, i havnt played a bad cole clark yet. the FL1's are probally amoungst the best acoustics in that price range... look prety ugly tho.
one of my mates has a FL2 12 string model. that thing is niiice.

Australian companies make some beautiful acoustics so I'd try to stick with something aussie. Also like Arin, Taylors are also really nice!

i agree with both of these. but australian companies (ie cole clark and maton) constantly push the 'aussie is better' thing when in reality for a good maton/cc you have to play thousands when you can score a beautiful taylor or martin for under 2 grand.

I picked up a coleclark FL2 the other month to see what the fuss was about and I dunno, the sound was good but I didn't get a good feel with it on the fretboard. It felt really gritty for some reason? The direct Maton competitor (I think a 325.. correct me if I'm wrong) sounded better (but apparently it takes a couple of months or so for the cole clark sound to get richer) and the fretboard was really smooth.
Are you guys getting the same feel with the cole clarks or was it that particular model?

i felt the coles necks were too fat and felt kinda wierd compared to any other guitar but when i picked up the FL3 i was like holly fuck this thing is completelty different and about 300 times better then the FL2 or 1!

what sort of tone are you after? I've always had a real soft spot for cedar tops, I love the full bodied tone you get out of 'em. Some woods sound so treble dominated and I don't like that kind of brightness in an acoustic at all.
Right. Looking at getting a dreadnought for around $800. One with a preamp preferred. Suggestions?

Instead of making a new thread, I'll ask here
I'm trying to restring an old acoustic. Was my dad's from when he was young... so it's a guitar from '74. It doesn't use the pin design, it wraps back on itself. Anyways, I was hoping someone could help say how to string it. I broke the high E already, lol. Is the tuning EXACTLY the same as electric, or is it a whole octive lower. I had the high E on the acoustic sounding the same as the low E on my electric, but then when I tried to tune it up to the high E on the electric, it snapped on me. So I guess it's tuned a whole octive lower?
Thanks
EDIT: n/m. Apparently he knows how to string it and just asked if I wanted to do it, lol. Oh well, haha

yeah I was looking at them, and i know they are awesome and good quality and there is a good dealer of them not too far from where i live, so i'll definitely check them out.
I was thinking the FL1 with the cutaway and preamp, $1,499.00 so only a little over budget :p

Wow... Not to knock your local guitar dealer.. but i got my FL2 with a Cole Clark case from the Acoustic Centre in South Melbourne for $1500 cash.. So i would recommend shopping about.. The thing to be weary about with acoustics (IMO) is that two guitars of the same specs, brand and model can feel completely different..
Maybe others don't agree.. but I played upwards of 20 different acoustics in my price range and then chose my favorite of the three cole clark FL2's i tried on the day I made my purchase. They can be completely different beasts!

Maybe try the entry level Maton? Maton's are awesome, my personal favourite, but each guitar is different. I reckon it's worth spending a few months trying heaps of them out until you find the right one for you. Like when Harry Potter is wandhunting...

dont worry dave, i wont laugh at you for comparing my guitar hunt to harry potter much :p
And Nick, thats the price listed on the website, so i really doubt that it would actually be that much in store. and yeah i know what you mean that no two acoustics are alike. so if i find one that i really like i'll just get it i think.

just jumping back aways here, but the reason you got the FL2 for cheaper than the price I listed is the RRP of the FL2 is less than the RRP of the FL1AC ;)

Oh sorry.. I actually mean FL2AC... I mean FL2 with cutaway and pickup (well 2 pickups in essence).. So i assume that's a FL2AC? Forgot that the names were different of course!
But yeah at the time I was really happy with the price and I've since emailed the Acoustic Centre about a lap steel and they've come back to me with a good price..

Yeah I was really happy with it… They only show RRP on most items on their website, but the few times I’ve dealt with them I’ve just sent off an email letting them know what i'm looking for and asking for best price and they’ve been really helpful and no fuss about getting back to me with a good deal. And when i went in to buy they just let me play away and try out the different models and knew their stuff about the guitars.
It’s a breath of fresh air to have people in guitar sales who don’t bullshit.. Was in Allans last year when I was looking for an amp and was talking to one of the guys there about a HRD and I just wanted to know his best price really.. I think they had it tagged at $1500 and I thought that was a bit steep.. I was polite and all and when I said “well what price can you do it for” he asked me about 20 smart ass questions instead of trying to come up with anything. “oh so you’re looking to buy today?” – “well how much have you seen them elsewhere for?” – “do you have the money or are you just asking?”… Told him not to worry about it and he got all sooky.. Picked one up at Manny’s the next week for $1200.. Argh!! Billy Hyde’s used to be good but they seem to be going the same way now as well..
That’s my whinge for the day.. But I have more. Can we start a thread to bitch and moan about tools in music stores?? Haha jokes..
mattheal
07-31-2009, 10:28 AM
yeah the shop that i always get stuff from are awesome with giving discounts.
ie my HRD marked at $1300, got it for $100
OCD marked a $400 got it for $300
Pro Jet Marked at $899 got it for $699
when i was thinking about getting a supersonic, they were going to give me nearly $1000 off
they are the nicest guys in there as well :)
and the place that has cole clarks arent bad either, but i havent bought much from there because they dont have any of the big brands apart from Cole Clark, the other place pretty much has them all covered.

I'm verrrrry tempted to take the plunge and fork out for one of them Maton EBG808. Has anyone here got to play one before? Also having a look at Cole Clark's take on it, the Cole Clark Angel. i love the maton EB's, they sound really punchy and are really comfortable to play.
and matt, depending on your price range, look into the matons,
i find the entry level CC's sound better (to my ears), but once you start getting into the higer figures, matons really take the cake. my opinion ofcouse.

Not meaning to take away from matt's fire here..... but i've just found out that I have lessons teaching 12 guitar and 4 violin students at a school starting up this coming week, and I need a new acoustic guitar with which to teach them. ;)
So i've been doing my research.... there's a few options which I have. I'd really like a full size acoustic, but unfortunately I'm kinda small. So that really leaves the cole clark FL's out of the question.... Same with the CW80 and 325 Matons...
So I've kinda settled on one of the 808 sized matons. I'd really prefer one without a cutaway, otherwise they look a little too much like an electric. Ultimately I'd really like a Tommy Emmanuel Sig which looks like this http://www.maton.com.au/images/stories/acoustics/EBG808TE_large.jpg, but they're about $2300 at the cheapest possible price....
I could get just the standard EBG808 or EBG808L... But even those are quite expensive, upwards of $2000. Or I could go for a Maton Messiah, which I've found second hand here in Perth. They're the top of the range Maton, which retails at over $4k brand new, I'd be looking at about $2k.
What do you guys reckon? For playability, i'd probably go for an 808 sized body, but the messiah looks pretty good for that price....

cole clark An3ac or whatever they are called?
Mitch-PTV
02-13-2010, 07:24 PM
ok davey,
i was at haworth today, and my dads looking for a new maton.
so i tried out the messiah, the EBG808(c), a few custom shop ones, and a couple others.
and i have to say, apart from the sands of time custom shop, the 808 was my guitar of choice.
followed closely by the messiah (as you can see, i have expensive taste)
the 808 was really comfortable to play, and very punchy. the chords had really good articulation to each note, while still sounding together and full. for single note stuff, this guitar was the best one i played.
the messiah was really nice aswell. it was the rosewood model (as opposed to the rock maple one) and it sounded really warm and full. it had all the cosmetics, and a tone to match.
chords were full, still had great definition, but not as punchy as the 808.
if your playing in a band, or with other guitarists, and want to cut through, the 808 is the way to go, but if your doing the campfire sing along and need a full, great sounding acoustic, then the messiah really stands out.
both great guitars, you cant really go wrong with this decision.
my 2c.
TheColonel
02-13-2010, 07:50 PM
well I'm really looking for something that performs outstandingly plugged in (ala open mic nights), but still sounds good acoustically, although that is not as crucial as part A.
Hmm.... I may drop in on monday and have a chat to the guys at the shop, and see if I can get a custom-shop maton made.... well, I'll see how expensive it is first!
Mitch-PTV
02-13-2010, 07:53 PM
the base price for a custom shop maton electric is 4-5k. thats built to what you want, but then all the extra tidbits you have to pay for (like the pearl zipper up the neck, love those things)
not sure acoustic.
and also, the Maton AP5 pickup beautiful. i love it plugged in. the APMic is the same as the AP5, but it has a microphone built in, and you can blend the AP5 and the microphone. having a mix, just mic, or just AP5.

ah i see, similar to the cole clarks, that blending.
5k? hmmm.... may have to forget that.
So I'm looking at around $2300 if I go for the TE sig 808 http://www.haworthguitars.com.au/control/product/~category_id=TommyEmmanuel/~product_id=maton-EBG808TE, $1400 for the EBG808L http://www.haworthguitars.com.au/control/product/~product_id=maton-EBG808L and $2400 for the artist model http://www.haworthguitars.com.au/control/product/~product_id=maton-EBG808Artist

It will basically look like this:
http://www.maton.com.au/images/stories/acoustics/EBG808Artist_large.jpg
but with a few custom options. I removed the keyhole style headstock, replaced the snowflake inlays with pearl dots, honey stained the top, ebony binding, all gold hardware, and got my initials engraved on the 12th fret.

Oh you MUST play a gibson jumbo dude. Don't expect it to be anything like another acoustic you've played though. They have this barkyness about them.. Don't know how to describe. They're HUGE sounding though and project so well. Usually sound really nice and bright too.

Yeah that's the main reason I'm okay with selling mine, it just doesn't get played.
That, and that I should never have played a Maton Messiah. Well actually, I should never have played the Maton Messiah I played at Billy Hydes in Sydney. I've got a feeling I'd picked one up before and thought it was good but not great. But anyhow, the one I played in Sydney just kicked the arse off any acoustic I've ever played. Made my mate's Martin John Mayer seem like an Ashton. :p
It's no criticism of my Cole Clark, still a great guit... Just this particular Messiah.... ooh..

Which Cole Clark do you have?
When I bought mine I tried out quite a few but this one FL1 had a much richer tone than any of the others, including the FL2s and 3s, and the low end Matons. It was amazing - thought they had labeled it wrong for a minute. I didn't dare try the Messiah though :)

thats the thing with nice acoustics, They ALL sound different. I spent maybe 3 hours trying different Cole Clark FL-1's and 2's before I chose mine.

I've got a FL2AC (It's for sale actually!)
I agree with you both 100%. I think I tried about 15 different Cole Clarks while I was looking for mine. Ended up with 3 different one's at the Acoustic Centre in South Melbourne that I was trying. All of them were FL2AC's, but they all sounded noticably different. None were bad, but one was "better" to my ears, so I bought that one.
"I want that one"
So true, got to be picky with acoustics!
I rekon if I were to get another acoustic guitar i would grab a cheap-o 12 string for funsies and I reeeallyyy want a resonator. Not sure why, but they always just sound so freaking coooool! :)

Yeah they are cool. They can be proper fuckin' heavy too!
I just love that real 'metalic' tone the have to them. YUMMO!

Yeah that's what I did too and ended up with a beautiful bunya and blackwood FL1. I must play it more though... has been getting the silent treatment since I got my Gretsch....

anyone tried out gretsch acoustics??
this isnt happening now or soon but im pretty keen on them if i got one itd have to be electric so im thinkin http://www.gretschguitars.com/products/index.php?partno=2714022522 this looks pretty cool
and if i scrapped the electric thing
http://www.gretschguitars.com/products/index.php?partno=2714034521
not happening soon! just for fantasy dont rape me about my amp!
I've never tried one... but I just think acoustics are meant to be acoustics. As in, if you bought one of them it would solely be for looks as opposed to sound.
That said... they do look damned cool. The falcon ones are baawwllliinn! And jack white seems to make them sound pretty good ;)

GOD DAMMIT I POSTED THE WRONG LINK!

there! ;)
Yeah sure it looks sweet. But you could get a WHOLE lot more acoustic guitar for a WHOLE lot less money right here in Aus. If you got that, it would SOLELY be for looks.... YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT MARK!
plus, there are a SQUILLION other things you need before something like that. Like a zillion pedals, amps, electric guitbox's... ;)

Indeed. It's a shame it looks so shitty in the pics (well compared to the vid anyhow.)
Sounds nice too.
mmmmmm yes very cool looking, and sounds OK. BUT I think it would be a bit vein getting something like that. SO much more acoustic bang for your buck out there I would argue, especially aussie made stuff...
But yep, damned cool acoustic guitars.

Huh?? Aussie made better than that for under $500??? WHERE!?
Anyhow, haven't got too much time to bang on about it now.
BUT... Played an Epiphone Jumbo today and was blown away by it. It was fantastic for the coin (guy said he could do it around $450.). Also played an 8k RRP Gibson jumbo.. Very nice, but it would want to be for that coin. Smoother sounding than the Epi, but I think I liked the extra brightness of the epi. The neck was awesome. Very tempting.
Well ZZsounds seems to always have the best price going around in the US... so add a bit more getting one from somewhere else. Then add shipping and what not.
I rekon 800 would be the cheapest you would get it for by the time you got it over here? And that's when maton's start. And they're pretty darned nice guitbox's.
But yeah, extremely cool guitar none the less!

Mmm dinner was good.. Anyhow, I'm back.
Yeah I reckon I could get one for under $700.. And just quietly.. I don't rate the cheapest Maton stuff. :innocent:
I LOVE their stuff, but don't get into their 225 series at all.. I reckon Cole Clark smashes them in that market. Personal opinion though of course, some others may love them.
Anyhow.. So yeah went into Gallins Guitars in Chapel St, Prahran today and played some guits. Was really testing the patience of the missus (to her credit she was great about it though), but managed to strum unplugged an Epi Wilshire, a few Gibby LP's and some Jumbos.
The Epiphone Jumbo was so impressive. When the first chord rang out I was smitten. I played it, then two Gibson jumbos, then went back to the Epi. I was expecting it to feel cheap when I went back to it, but it really didn't. Honestly so blown away by the quality.. Perhaps I just fluked a good one or something? Grover tuners too.. Stayed in tune with some wanker stuff up the neck too.
It has put me off that Gretsch for one reason in particular actually, the Gretsch isn't a full hollow. The sound of a full hollow Jumbo.. Oh my gawd. That said, not completely ruling out the Vintage or the Gretsch Jumbos... Just excited that I've at least found one thing in my budget (hopefully by Xmas?) for a Jumbo that will keep me happy.

I should have said cole-clarke and maton  But yeah that's what I'm getting at. I would say that you would get a whole lot more acoustic guitar for a whole lot more $$$ with a cole clarke. But might be worth the gamble on that gretsch! Sure looks the part ;)
Epi sounds killer dude!
