saw something about these in another thread and thought i may as well start one about them...
my friend has a pretty good one, i think its mostly a boost pedal but it can colour the sound as well (you can bypass this though) its a snarling dog and has modes for like blues, i think rockabilly etc. theres about 8 of them, its a nice pedal

(if theres already a similar thread feel free to lock this one, i won't be offended!)

anything can be a boost pedal, a compressor, a distortion, a tone pedal.
Simply, its about breaking you through the band so your solos can be heard, and hopefuly with a nice tone,

A distortion pedal or similar can be set up as aboost, with the distortion set to 10 - 30% and volume on full, and it should have some sort of Eq, keey it Trebly if you want to break through.

A compressor can be set to do the same with a medium level of compression and 100% on the level.

The way i set up is a use a foot switch to switch between Clean and Rythm and then I have a Pro Co, Rat2 Dist. pedal, which i use to boost the Rythm on Solos set up as a above.

but yes you could fork out extra money for a solo pedal

What he said. EQ pedals can also be used as boosts with the right settings:cool:

if its a distortion or overdrive boost you are after; you can get stomp boxes specifially designed for that purpose- they have the standard on/off switch as well as a boost function for your solos of whatever you want them for. I have 2 which I am really pleased with- the HBE powerscreamer and the TC electronic Vintage Dual Distortion.
