Maaaan. Got a tears in my eyes after seeing that. Didn't think I would, seeing as I'm sitting in bedroom watching it rather than actually at it.

Kinda surprised myself :p

Would love to see Chris do more of that stuff...just not with TLE - more of a side project type thing (but without TLE having to take a break for him to do so :p)

You're worse than me!

I dunno what night that was but there are a couple of errors in it that he didn't make in Adelaide. Hopefully the last show gets taped as some people are picking, because they seem to be getting better every performance...as you'd expect.

RE: Possible live CD

I interview Phil Bathols today, Director of Spiritworks, for a uni assignment of mine.

Amongst other things we were talking about, I asked about the live CD/DVD rumour - figured I'd go straight to the horse's mouth!

He said that it won't be a DVD, they're just working out what they were able to record with the equipment & what's usable, but there's also a lot of legal issues to work around as well, so assuming that all is fine, we'll have a CD ASAP :)

Might post the article when it's done, he said some really interesting stuff. Loverly guy!

Hope you like it :)

There are some things you grow up knowing not to do. You wouldn’t try to create a masterpiece and sell it to Picasso’s greatest admirers. You wouldn’t try to play a game of cricket in front of Don Bradman’s biggest fans. So what possessed four Australian musicians to believe they could perform a Beatles album in its entirety in front of thousands of Beatles’ diehard fans, and come out the other side?

Several years ago, whilst coordinating a similar event at the Sydney Opera House, two well-known producers had an idea. What if four regular Australian musicians took on the infamous, beloved White Album and made it their own? Would they be revered and admired, or would Beatles fans across the country be horrified at the thought of strangers playing some of their favourite songs?

The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes. Coinciding with the 40th birthday of the album, five shows were announced; one each in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Within days, all were sold out and extra dates were added to the tour to cope with the popularity of the concert.

“We knew when we got the amazing lineup that we had a problem on our hands. We anticipated big numbers but it was still a surprise,” said Phil Bathols, Director of Spiritworks, the production company for the White Album concert.

“Tim (Woods) and I have a couple of motivations for shows like this. We like to be excited about what it is we are trying to create and we need to feel that it is commercially viable. Both boxes were ticked with the White Album concert.” Bathols said.

Australia’s own Fab Four are well-known, successful musicians in their own right, with several ARIA awards and over 20 albums between them. Musical Director Stuart D’Arietta handpicked the artists, having worked with and known them for many years.

Chris Cheney is the frontman of The Living End, a punk rock band who have been filling the airwaves with their unique sound since the early 1990’s. Chris is no stranger to supergroups, having performed in a tribute to Stevie Wright among other recent involvements.

Josh Pyke, a successful solo artist, is considered the newbie of the group, releasing his first album in 2007. Since then, he has shot to fame with several notable tracks including Lighthouse and Make You Happy.

Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson has been off the radar recently, buried in the studio with his band working hard to produce their latest album, Six to Midnight. Rearing his head long enough to perform the White Album concerts, Jamieson also performed with Cheney in the Wright’s supergroup.

Tim Rogers is the eccentric and eclectic frontman of You Am I, a largely indie band rising to fame in the early 1990’s and enjoying that fame ever since. Rogers is renowned for his entertaining live performances and comedic behaviour.

“They’re all great mates and great musicians,” Bathols said of the group, putting into words a fact immediately obvious to audience members, with the onstage camaraderie and antics as entertaining as the performances themselves.

The White Album is one that Beatle’s fans are particularly proud of. Phil McKenzie has been a diehard fan of The Beatles since the age of 5, and considers the White Album to be his favourite by far.

“The music is so diverse, with so many brave ideas.” McKenzie says. “It was new and exciting and it caught the world’s imagination, they were prepared to push their own boundaries and remarkably it worked.”

Both Bathols and McKenzie unanimously agree that the performances were done brilliantly, bringing justice to the White Album and the Beatles themself.

“Certainly, the resulting show worked ideally,” McKenzie says. “They each brought an element of themselves to the songs they performed yet they managed to not stray from the original.”

“I hadn’t expected to be blown away by what Chris Cheney brought to each of his songs,” McKenzie continues. “His performances of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Helter Skelter were the highlights for me, his playing was nothing short of sensational.”

“We were thrilled with the way they performed,” Bathols says. “They did a brilliant job, they definitely exceeded expectations. They were enjoying themselves and it showed.”

Though Bathols was born the year after the White Album was released, he understands the significance the album held for Tim Woods, his partner in crime.

“Tim was a very young man when it came out, it holds strong memories of that era in his life,” Bathols says. “It’s been great for him, he’s been able to relive his youth and have some fun, earning money at the same time.”

Bathols admits finding artists brave enough to take on another artist’s masterpiece can be a challenge but hopes that the White Album concerts might be enough to change this perception for both artists and managers.

“They think it’s a big daggy, but what we demonstrated this time is that it doesn’t need to be daggy – it can be really cool,” Bathols says. “All of the artists benefited enormously, they were exposed to a whole new audience they wouldn’t normally see.”

Staying true to the album, the concerts performed the tracks as they appear on the album with the exception of Revolution 9.

The 17-piece backing band, featuring strings, horns, drummers and guitars introduced the show with Can You Take Me Back, and complemented each artist beautifully, as they each performed several songs individually as well as Revolution and Ob La Di, Ob La Da together as a group.

To be continued ...

Caity

Following on ...

Recorded in 1968 following a trip by the Beatles to India, the White Album emerged as a critical and commercial success.

To date, it has sold more than 19 million copies worldwide, and is listed as the 10th highest selling record of all time, number 10 on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and one of TIME Magazine’s “All Time 100 Albums”.

The influence the Beatles had on rock music and popular culture was immense. The commercial success they enjoyed started an immediate wave of changes.

“Once they were exposed to the wider world, their popularity increased dramatically,” McKenzie says. “Their look suited a wide audience of teenagers looking for their own generations’ singing ‘stars’, the music was great and fabulous to dance to.”

“The due reverence came later though,” McKenzie continues. “Their ability to explore new ways of writing music was unique. Any musician can tell of another musicians influence on their own music, yet The Beatles created without a template.”

Various artists in the decades since the Beatles arrived on the music scene have listed the Fab Four as heavy influences.

Chris Cheney says that he “always loved the sound of The Beatles when they let loose and sounded tough, and to me The White Album has a perfect balance of rock’n’roll abandonment with the incredible songwriting skills they’re so revered for.”

The influence stretches further than music careers, however. “It’s hard to imagine growing up without The Beatles. From the nursery rhyme Yellow Submarine to the songbooks we got in primary school with Help From My Friends, they have been omnipresent in my life. They have provided a soundtrack to so many moments, I mean, my wife walked down the aisle to I Will, for Christ’s sake.” Phil Jamieson says.

Taking on the White Album was no easy feat for the artists themselves. In the concert’s program, Cheney is honest about how they felt prior to performing the album.

“It’s so beautiful and it’s too clever,” Cheney says. “This is the biggest of them all and we know many of the people who come to this concert will have imbibed the whole album – word for word, note for note – so it’s been our goal to really get behind the sentiment of the music while putting our own stamp on it.”

The concerts may be over and the instruments all packed away but there is no doubt that the experience will live on in the minds of all who performed, assisted and saw the concerts.

“It was a great project, I loved working on it and I miss it now but I have a feeling we’ll do it again in some way, shape or form,” Bathols says.

For Beatles fans around the world, we can only hope.

That's what Chris was getting at when Yana asked him about it, I think. The recordings are in "the vault" and from how it sounded, they wont see the light of day.

Such a fantastic night - I was lucky enough to be in the front row.

Nearly got kicked out for filming the best part of the whole night - while my guitar gently weeps. that solo was incredible.

I would buy the DVD just for that song

So, still no news since that facebook post in December about a possible DVD release? Kind of disappointing to have it teased and still no news, although the fact that they bothered to say anything means they're at least still thinking about it or trying to make it happen.

Yes! This definitely has to be released as a DVD! Was an amazing concert!
And I'm sure they'd have no worries selling plenty of copies.
My Dad keeps telling me he's so suprised it hasn't been released as a DVD,
and I totally agree! Let's get this partition going! I remember they wouldn't let
people video record on their cameras or take pics, and I got told off during the gig,
so I would love to have a DVD to re-live it!

On a side note, I miss seeing Chris throw up his guitar and catch it at the end of the show like in this video. Maybe it's cos he dropped the falcon that time, but still it's pretty exciting to watch, and the last few times he hasn't done it. Feel free to start again Chris ;)

Email conversation as follows:

Hi Phil,

I'm not sure if you remember me, I interviewed you for a university assignment a few years back around the time of the White Album tour. I also recently added you on LinkedIn!

I am a member of The Living End's forum (Chris Cheney is the lead singer) and the subject came up recently about whether or not we would ever see a CD or DVD released of the White Album tours. Someone found a link to a YouTube clip which was in Japanese for some reason, but looked like a promo of a CD/DVD so we were interested!

I wonder if you have any idea if this will ever happen? If not, can you point me in the right direction of who to ask?

I hope all is well with you otherwise & look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards
Caitlin
Hi Caitlin,

At this stage we have no plans to release a DVD/CD in the near future.

All the best,

Phil

Hi Phil,

Thank you for getting back to me so promptly, I appreciate it!

I know that a couple of the forum members were wanting to put together some sort of petition for it - is there somewhere they could send it?
Thanks
Caitlin

Sure, send it to me.

Cheers,

Phil
So!

If someone wants to organise a petition, whenever it's ready let me know and I will pass it on to Phil :)

Good work Caity :)

Might be an idea to get people from other forums/band fan pages to sign it,like You Am I fans, etc. Maybe with a link showing the decent quality video posted a few pages back. Surely there are beatles fans that would sign it, also.

Caity

I know you can set up online petitions, so we could share it on Facebook as well - with the whole 6 degrees of separation thing, it'd end up on those forums anyway haha!
