When I saw the thread with this title in the gigs section I thought it would be this topic.. and I thought this would be a good topic. So I made it!
Of course I'm referring to the first gig you ever played.. How was it? Where was it? Who was it with? What did you play? Did you suck? Etc etc..
:)

haha nah. it surprisingly went really well. I was real scared cos I had to play the guitar solo at the start. I thought I would stuff it all up but somehow I got through it quite well

LOL, first gig, a complete embarassment. Was for a friends 16th. I did it in year10 and we lost our lead singer like a day before the gig. So as the 3 remaining members, we relearnt some old covers in ONE day. The gig was a shame except for a sweet cover of "walkie talkie man", and apart from that was pretty terrible. From the lead singer singing off sheets of lyrics, to us guitarists playing solos in the wrong keys, it went down well, I'll tell you that much :P

I was 15 (now almost 22)- Battle of the bands, we won- oh yeah! I was the bassmonkey back in those days and shit scared of doing anything other than play.. still have it on video to this day. Crowd loved our cover of britney- hit me baby one more time. Was special.
as a guitarist/vocalist however I have excelled even further.
Right now, having a bit of a drummer issue and trying to find a new one... gig's a little scarce at the moment.

colac battle of the bands last year, i played bass and did not move the whole time and copped it for that the whole night, didnt get a place but it was a bit of a sham anyway
presentation night in yr 8, there must have been around 500 people from the school and local council and community and I was nervous as hell. I'd only just gotten my first electric guitar like the week before and learnt the song that they play in the new version of the movie Freaky Friday and I was playing lead guitar but I had two other rhythm guitarists behind me and I absolutely nailed the solo! I had never been able to play it all the way through but I somehow managed on that night... yay

My first gig was when i was 12 or 13 in 2001, in front of my year 8 class, of which there were about 30 people watching/listening. It was just a little acoustic set, with me on guitar/backing vocals and the lead singer busting out the notes to some Pennywise, Blink 182, Good Charlotte and Offspring numbers. (we couldn't get the whole band to play due to everyone being in different classes during the period, so me and the singer rehearsed for a few days and wen't hardout. and yeah we were pretty serious about the whole getting a band together thing back then, was my first band aswell.) The gig itself wen't well, a couple of stuff ups but nothing major, ALOT OF NERVES, but yeah we got an applause and i think it was more to do with the fact that we were "balls'y" enough to perform infront of an audience, but yeah it was fun, very fun. A definite buzz. The buzz you get from playing gigs and infront of crowds is something special, and that was the first time i experienced it. Of course from that day on, i wen't on to play guitar in numerous other bands, i did numerous School Talent Quests every year after 2001 infront of about 1000 people. We won a couple, so it wasn't bad at all.

Lol first gig was a talent quest at a youth camp covering Jets are you gonna be my girl.... First real gig in my current group was July 06 at our Church Centers Function hall where some other bands were putting on a Band thing called Murmurs of heavan, supposed to anual, We covered Some antiskeptic and some Relient K, and some Paul Coleman, we sucked... We had to get our friend who was a singer to sing, because our real singer was in Canarvon

My first gig with my old band, The Sinful Mongeese, was in a front bar for some talent quest. It was the worst expirience of my life, squeling feedback, out of tune guitars, forgotten lyrics... horrible... But with my new band, The Hoodoo Voodoo Dolls, we played out first show at an Unlicensed venue in Adelaide called The Underground and it went rad! It was some of the most fun I've had playing on stage :D

Hrmm, first time I played in front of an audience was when I was in grade 3 in 1998, I had to play silent night in our Christmas play thing. The first gig I played with a band was a few years ago at a football club, just doing a stack of 60's and 70's covers, and some country rock stuff.

I actually have absolutely no idea when the first time I ever performed for an audience was. I've been doing it all my life.
BUT I do remember the first performance my current band did. It was at the end of year school presentation, I was at the end of year 11. It was in the great hall of Newcastle Uni. We played Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd as the official party was leaving. It was awesome because we hung around backstage doing nothing in particular for most of the night. Good times. :D ....the performance was also fun. :p

i remember my first gig, it was last year at braybrooks big day out, not THE big day out but a community thing, we did i think it was a 45 minute set, i stuffed up on the roll on solo, it was pretty funny. we ended with second solution and at the end where TLE do the long outro we did the same and during the drum rolls jason the drummer of the band had the stick fly up and hit him in the face!
im still in the band today, and we're writing our own songs.

hahah first gig we played as a band was awesome.
we played Prisoner of Society, WGSU, Second Solution, All torn down, wake up and ended with carry me home. it was sooo much fun. for some reason we werent scared at all just really pumped up and ready to go. it was for a battle of the bands/gig at school that we put on and we fuckin won it as well haha
i think there was about 800 people there. our singer even got the double bass out and played double bass and sung. only in easy songs like WGSU and wake up but :)
only fuck up was when he stood on the bass he kicked the mic away from my amp which was miced up so i had to run over to the amp and then crank it which was in the middle of a solo :P

I cant remember my very first gig, but the first gig with my current band was for the Tour Down-under street party. We were playing on a stage representing my high school, and if i remember correctly we hand only found our bass player about four days before the gig and had to train her up and teach her all our original songs.
The gig went pretty well apart from having to use some crappy supplied guitar amps (mine was a broken marshal that wouldn't go to the clean channel so i had to play everything with distortion) and we got a pretty good audience reaction. We also played the next day for the start of the race, but everyone left as soon as the bikes left so we ended up playing a set to about 3 people.

My first one was last year at the school's fundraising talent quest called 'Grammar Idol' (I go to a grammar school). My band had been rehearsing for that whole term and it was such a big build up to the day, all our friends were so excited for us.
It went really well and we won!!!
Here's the link to it, I played the lead guitar (I'm on the right with the white strat covered in stickers)

Does school band count? That's the first time I played an instrument infront of an audience. :p I played the trombone and I forgot half of what I was supposed to play, so I faked it most of the time. Ooo.

School band has to count Chelsea! Otherwise I've been gigless for most of my life!
I guess my first gig was playing recorder in this little church band we had going on. It was really funny because my friend and I played the melody on our recorders. Why on earth would you need to do that when it's already being sung?! I think they just gave us parts for the sake of it!

oh if school band does count then mine was playing when the saints or some other song i cant remember, i was one of 2 sax players. we had like a 3 second solo.
someday itll be a rock band and a guitar instead of a saxaphone :p
My first was in my classical guitar quartet to about 1200 people when i was 13. Fully hektic.

peoples who's balls have dropped would be pushing to hit those notes and it would be evident by their singing. he doesnt even really have to try and its still squeeky clean.

Unless he has a naturally high range or is a lot better than what you're giving him credit for and knows how to use head voice etc.

About the Nic Cester debate, I'm no singer or anything, but a lot of my friends are and they're always going on about falsetto (high vocal range). So if you work at it, most guys can probably reach the top ranges of their voices i.e. Nic Cester even if you're a fully grown male :D . Hehe!
oh if school band does count then mine was playing when the saints or some other song i cant remember, i was one of 2 sax players. we had like a 3 second solo.

I play the saxophone too and sometimes I wish I was playing more guitar than saxophone...but still, it is a pretty awesome instrument I reckon!
Grumma
01-19-2008, 01:37 PM
everyone a) has falsetto and b) has the ability to reach your highest notes in falsetto
whether you can do it consistantly is the problem most people have.
regardless of that, Nic Cester has the vocal range of a lawnmower

01-19-2008, 05:25 PM
maybe you completely missing my point?
i didnt say anything about nic cesters's singing, i said that that kids balls havnt dropped yet. nor did i say anything about falsetto.
just that the kids balls havnt dropped so his voice is unaturally high (if an adult was to sing in the same key as him). if an adult was to sing in the same key as the kid they would have to push a hell of a lot more then the kid and it would be evident in their singing aka the kid has no grunt in his voice and an adult would sound more like nic cester. thats all im saying.
i dont even know who's agreeing with me and who isnt lol

Pfft, who cares, you're talking about kids balls dropping after all lol

I've played the sax for 6 years and I'm using it as my instrument for solo performance at school this year. I'm really scared about performing in front of a moderator and my teacher. I don't know which one is more scary lol! You should definately take it up again one day when you can :)

It was in Elementary school 4th grade I played the violin and I had to preform "Mary had a lil lamb" in front of like 200 parent and student so when I got up to play it, the teacher played piano with me so I got half way through the song and I messed up and said "SHIT" really loud and started all over haha.
fun fun!
but in band wise um at some rockabilly bar it was fun me and my friend played Blink 182 covers with another band! then when I was done some guy came up to me asking me for my number and if I wanted a drink then he realize after 20 mins I was underage and he freaked out and slowly moving backwards haha!
good first gig!

Sounds fine but everyone else in the band thinks it's horrible.
