Gawd dam this is a hard one.

I voted for Reborn. I remember hearing it at the Longnecks gig at the NSC and loved it immediately. It just beat out Trapped and 21st Century a close third.

SOMETHING IS SEEETHINNNGGGGGGG

Revolution, hands down. Except for that ridiculous cover version from the Dirty Man single. That one even makes "Putting You Down" look like more than a turd.

I voted for Trapped though Putting you Down was very close. They both are best for me among these.

21st century, after a very long decision

Yeh I went for 21st...just something fresh. I love trapped but it just doesn't quite do it for me. Very tough decision.

this was really hard. nearly all of these songs has been 'the' song at some stage :P but I picked 21st century cos it has a meaning that hits home more recently (which would be fairly obvious haha)

close second would be putting you down. the first two tied in at 3rd. and reborn last

21st because the solo is short but oh so sweet! :innocent:

Something I always think about when Trapped comes on is how random Trav's little opening drum riff thing is....it relies heavily on the double-kick-pedal setup, but it's never used anywhere else in the song, and as far as I can tell, it's the only time a double-kick-drum was used in the band's entire career!! All for a 4 second intro. Random.

And maybe putting you down would sound better in a live setting, where it wasn't so hyper-polished, but...I dunno. I just don't buy that Carlos Santana-type shit coming out of Chris' guitar (the EXCEPTION being the middle section of The Room, before they go into the WE...WILL..NEVA LEAVEEE)

The Dying Start

Depends what you mean by "the only time a double kick was used in the bands entire career". Recording career, maybe. But for a big chunk of their touring career between 2000 and 2001 Trav's touring kit was a big bastard with double kick drums.

Revolution Regained definitely, Trapped's second though but the other songs I'm not sure about. RR's probably the most ballsy one out of them I reckon

Yeah, but I thought the joke at the time was that it sat there and looked awesome but never got played? I mean, it's pretty hard to miss a double kick drum sound, kinda overwhelms whatever else is goin on. i could be wrong, though. I was still a wee lad of 14...

Oh, he utilised it! I still remember LeMans 2001. It was just another tool to spur Trav's impovisation!

REBORN after only a slight hesitation by way of Trapped...
i love the sing-along-ability of the song, find myself playing it all the time these days

also, 21st Century is actually one of my more disliked tracks
the lyrics and the music really don't do anything for me
i find theres a cheese factor there that just doesn't match it with the brilliance of the rest of the tracks on WN, or the rest of the boys' work

While I must admit that some of 21st cent.'s lyrics are a little cringe-worthy ("below the belt, hide the facts") I like the pop-culture-icon collage style of alot of the lines, and "running out of options, preparing to fail" is possibly the most honest description i've heard of what pretty much EVERYBODY is doing in these shite economic times.

And anyway, personally I think even the cheesiest lines in it still beat out "if you get close to the fire you're gonna get burned again" :p Although, I guess that's good advice if yo momma never taught cha not to put ya hand on the stove.

Also, does anyone think 21st century sounds a bit like Muse?? Especially the verses, with those sort of pulsing, futuristic/synthy kind of effects.

And andy's two-second-extra-chunky-chocolate-chip drum "solo" towards the end of Reborn is CRUNK

haha its metaphor, man!
and the emotion with which its sung...is clearly epic ;)

lines like 'global warming, just ain't cool...too much chlorine in the gene pool' keep 21st from being another of their great social commentaries...they're just not that brilliant
on the Muse count, i would agree...

and i am going to go play Reborn again right now after you summarised that drum bit so perfectly...hehe

Reborn by far. Trapped is fairly good. But Reborn wins easily. Ever since the first time i ever heard it on Triple J, i've been hooked.

For me, after hearing the latest album, i know this might sound a bit silly, but yeah, in my head reborn is a tiny link between the 'State of Emergency" and 'White Noise' albums. I know they had the time off, and Chris writes stuff a bit differently now, but the straight up slap double bass, and the sexy guitar riff after the chorus', reminds me of the White Noise album for some reason. And the distortion pedal used during the pre-chorus just makes it sound like something new, in a new direction for The Living End

I was just thinking how "Trapped" is the only TECHNICAL single out of the bunch (even though it's USA-only, and Reborn appeared as a 'b-side' on WOYR?)and obviously singles often tend to be the winners.

What is the most common track space (as in what #) used for TLE singles?? Anybody know??

The Dying Start
07-05-2009, 01:30 PM
Not a hard one to find out, but the effort required is beyond me! It's easily within the first half of the album. Maybe even 1 or 2!

The Dying Start
07-05-2009, 01:39 PM
Okay i worked it out!

TLE: 1| |3|4| | |7|8|9| | | | | |

RO: 1|2| | |5| |7| | | | | | | |

MA: |2|3| | |6| | | | | | | | |

FH: 1| | | | | | | | | | | | | |

SE: |2| |4|5|6|7|| | | | | | |

WN: |2|3|4| | | | | | |

So the winner is Track 2 with a total of 4 singles in that spot.

Tracks 1; 3; 4 & 7 have had a total of 3 singles each released from that spot.

Tracks 5 & 6 have had two a piece.

Tracks 8 and 9 have had one each.

Woo!! Thanks Glenn. Definitely wouldn't have gotten off my arse to do all that. I did have a hunch that it was gonna be 2 (or 1), although the fact that OSTTO and Tabloid Magazine switched track positions on the US version of the MA album (I have both the Aussie and US versions) always confused me with that.

And as for the overwhelming number of singles off S/T, it has often been said that the album was almost more of a "collection of singles" than a proper record, as often the singles were released first (and in the case of POS/SS, albeit different versions, almost a full year in advance!!)

Also:

Carry Me Home, What Would You Do, End Of The World, 'Til The End and How Do We Know? were radio singles.

Dunno if that counts considering they didnt have a video for them. Trapped didn't but that was released as a physical single. I Can't Give You What I Haven't Got had a video but that wasn't released as a physical single, same with Raise The Alarm, but that was a digital single with Faith as a Bside.

*head explodes*.....i should stop thinking too hard.

To me, anyway, I only count as true singles the songs that have had some sort of physical release, and also, generally speaking, are tracks culled from an actual ALBUM.

What Would You Do? would be counted, because One Said/WWYD was/is considered by the band to be a "double a-side" with additional b-sides (ala Prisoner of Society/Second Solution). But, to make things even more confusing, I don't think you could include that in my "what track space is most popular for TLE singles" query, because the version that was an a-side on the single (and went to radio) isn't the same one that eventually made it to Modern Artillery...tricky, eh??

Thusly, I wouldn't include any of the other "radio singles", and even though it had a video, ICGYWIHG was merely a promo for a greatest hits rather than a physical single of any sort with its own b-side(s) etc, so I wouldn't count it either. It gets too confusing if you include radio singles...I mean, just to use an example, "From Here On In" was a radio-single and got the band its first surge of popularity, but....no video, no physical single, etc., and if you count that track as a single that would make Stay Away From Me, Problem, etc. it's b-sides....and that just ain't right!!!

Singles don't HAVE to be culled from albums though; its not so common these days, but there was a time when popular singles were often tracks released exclusively as singles and/or with their own unique b-sides, unique individual records that usually got put out in between a band's full-length record releases. Just to use a random example, some of The Clash's greatest (and most popular) songs are non-album singles: Complete Control, White Man In Hammersmith Palais, et cetera. Kinda wish bands still did that.

*phew* Does that make sense?? Anybody follow me??

paulvroc
07-08-2009, 04:29 PM
kinda irrelevant, but triple m seems to be doing the boys well of late, giving past songs a gig in regular airplay.
heard the single version of One Said yesterday night, and All Torn Down today
both in the car, as i never listen to radio...

Reborn has been a pretty underground favourite, wasn't it originially a B-side? because (correct me if i'm wrong) it was on the Whats on your radio single... and have the guys ever played it live?

I don't think it was actaully a B side, like it was on the single but was always intended for the album. Sometimes they just put an album track on the first single for a teaser. tis a good song though.

1. Reborn - Strong song from start to finish; love the way it winds down around 2:20 and then builds back up for the end.
2. Trapped - Another great sounding and fun song, with a good up-beat tempo at the songs height. Tough second choice to Reborn.
3. Revolution Regained - Good song, though short with little else to offer.
4. 21st Century - Reminded me of Billy Joel first time I heard it; decent song, and I like what went into the lyrics but it hasn't really made a great impact on me.
5. Putting You Down - Don't mind it at all but doesn't match up to the other songs here.
