does anyone know if there's any videos of The Living End playing acoustic songs live. I've seen some pictures of acoustic sets, but i never found a video.
The Dying Start
08-02-2007, 06:56 PM
Neither have i. Even audio-wise, we only have bits here and there no full sets.
Anyone know where Scotty and Chris got their ink done?
I seem to remember reading about Scotts f-holes years ago, but dont ever recall hearing where Chris got his falcon or felix.
And do we know what other ink (if any) they have?
I thought they both got theirs done on the most recent warped tour at the same time as Andy?
Kacky
08-07-2007, 11:34 AM
They got their tattoos on the 2006 Warped Tour. There's a travelling tattoo artist that goes on it, I'm pretty sure.
Cool. Couldn't remember.
Still, anyone know about felix?

I was wondering, does anybody have any idea if Rising Sun will become a live setlist regular?
Sarah

no idea.
It's still current and popular (did i mention good??) so i guess it will be around for a while. It might be the new Tainted Love!

It can be the new Tainted Love as long as Tainted Love is still played regularly! For my sake may I add.

I wouldn't mind it becoming a regular. It's still getting tonnes of airplay.

Moose
08-20-2007, 01:28 AM
TLE are essentially a bunch of affable Aussies who play great music. Anarchy is a homicidally angry song - they are nowhere near intense enough for it. And what would they mean by advocating 'Anarchy in the UK'? Why not in Aus?
You've only got to watch the West End Riot video to see how out of place it would be. It would be a bit tourist..
What do you want next - Keane do 'Beds are Burning'? Busted doing 'Know your Product'?

yep. If its not in the Alternative/Blues/Rockabilly/Indie/experimental/ genre, then I don't know it.
And especially if its from the SonyBMG label. They don't send me music to play, so I don't support them.

Most of what I have is on 23rd Precinct. At least I'm pretty sure it is (haven't had a really good look there - sorry Glenbo).
Anything that's not, I'd only have on tape, and no way of getting on the computer.
Anyhoo, why pick on me?
Glenn and Sarah have more shit than I do by way of recorded media...
Fritz
08-23-2007, 03:12 PM
Yeah there are heaps more old demos around.
There were two sessions in '91 I think... Both were pretty much the same songs but the later were much better sounding, better played.
I think there was another session AFTERwards (im sure it wasnt before) that had alot of covers by The Sharp, Rolling Stones, Creedance, Stray Cats aswell as alot of originals. Even So lonely was in there I think
Yeah I know ive definately got 3 entirely different sets of demos all up. (about 30 different tunes all up not including the doubled up tunes). Just cant remember the years... i'll have to dig them up. they are in my room somewhere
I've also got 3 different gigs recorded to tape straight off the mixing desk, playing in pubs to about a dozen people. Very very very very early 90's. Under 'the runaway boys' obviously, and seperately ive got a live fireballs concert that starts off with about 3 tunes by the support band.... Yes TLE

i re-discovered the old crack-a-jack site a week or so ago...here (http://www.crack-a-jack.com/)
they did Scotty's checkered bass and heaps of other cool stuff. I got 2 Yeah Yeah (http://www.crack-a-jack.com/yeahyeah/main.html) vinyls from there many moons ago, very cool!

101, but the last 3 songs are on the one tracks because CDs don't like going past 99!

This is mainly directed to anyone who used to frequent the old TLE chatroom.

Short Notice was played at one of the Longnecks gigs - or maybe it was the Dandy Nongs one - but cant think if So What has :)

09-10-2007, 05:38 PM
Yeh...when i first heard it i thought they would definitely play it as it is short, hard and powerful.
I would also love to hear Nothing Lasts Forever live. I found one or 2 on the net but not real good quality.
So What I imagine would be hard live...maybe if they did an acoustic set here and there they would.

WhitefalconTLE44

It does? How did you get it to work? I tried it in about 5 different players, and nothing. :(
WhitefalconTLE44
09-12-2007, 09:15 AM
My cambridge DVD player plays it fine. But the one old Sony DVD player we have doesn't, so i guess it depends on what company.
Weston
09-12-2007, 10:23 AM
Alternatively, you could try using a program to rip it to your computer - if you've got a Mac, the obvious solution is Handbrake, but for Windows you'll probably have to try finding the elusive DVD Decrypter, then renaming the huge file it spits out from .vob to .avi. (That should be enough to sidestep the DVD Regions; I have several American DVDs on my computer now)
smokey242
09-12-2007, 12:43 PM
If you got a cheap dvd player, nearly everything works coz the parts to make them regional are expensive making the players themselves expensive. If it has Divx written on it, it will play almost everthing. Mine won't play American dvds but plays pretty much every other region as well as AVIs etc.
I am actually trying to get a copy of the From Here On In dvd so i can put it onto my ipod. But my computer is Japanese so i need a Japan region dvd and they aren't that easy to come by!
Kacky
09-12-2007, 01:39 PM
I haven't tried different region DVDs in my DVD player yet, I don't think. So I wouldn't know what's happening with it. If you have the money to fork out for a regionless player, then that's the way to go.
I use the program VLC player (which is free) on my computer and it lets me watch most regions of dvds without a problem. It also plays most types of media files and takes great screencaps so it's pretty handy, don't think you can rip dvds with it though, just watch. There are a few dvd ripping programs which you can either trial for free or buy pretty cheaply.
And there's always the region switching thing if you don't want to download a program. You can swap regions a certain number of times so you could always swap your computer to a region your normal dvd player doesn't let you watch.
Dwntwn lights
09-12-2007, 05:33 PM
I actually have the VLC player on my laptop but I rarely use it so I didn't think it would work with any regional DVDs.
Thanks for all your help. :)
The Dying Start
09-13-2007, 02:36 PM
AnyDVD is a program that removes regioning and all those ads and warnings from dvd's on the fly, so playing them on your computer will work fine, and if you were to create a totally legal "backup copy", it would also be without ads or region!
Ooh, does the trial version have enough to do it properly or should I buy it if I ever need somthing like that?
Sarah

was it when they were between labels? actually they're still on the same one in Australia anyway aren't they? I tried, not bad considering i don't know what you're talking about... is it a tv show or movie or something?

You are one astute motherfucker!! I thought I had studied Roll On inside and out, but I never noticed this at all. Little things like this are part of why it's easily my favorite Living End record. There is in fact a few piano chords/noodling, also an acoustic guitar and some mellow horns at the "don't wanna listen to the voices..." break in Killing The Right...tons of intricate layering, all for about 3 seconds...these are the "difficult middle eights" Chris was always talking about that he felt weighed the album down. Fucking brilliant if you ask me. Although, as seen on From Here On In, the song, among many other songs on the album, was originally much longer (you can see them ripping on an extended jam of the intro riff in one of the brief Roll On studio clips...I wish there was more media from this era).

But when you compare the quality of the music on SOE, the quality of the music found on the self titled, Roll on an even Hellbound, I think that they are going in the wrong direction, hate to say it but I might be starting to lose faith, not really, I blame Chris’ crash. Songs like bloody Mary were fantastic, Wake up is rubbish, Black Cat is repetitive and boring, and so on, Long Live the Weekend is great though. Anyway, just checking if anyone thinks like me

I agree that SOE sounds different from previous ones. I actually wouldn't mind the next record to have stuff that sounds like the Hellbound/IFYOG and self-titled eras. That would be awesome.
WhitefalconTLE44
09-27-2007, 01:27 PM
I think that they changed styles a little, only in being that they are not pure punkabilly anymore, so its understandable if you only like rockabilly/punkabilly, that you would not like their newer stuff. I personally think SOE is their best album by far. I love all their albums, but i think SOE is amazing.
I'm not really a huge fan of State Of Emergency. I like Reborn and What's On Your Radio but I think the rest of the songs are a bit ordinary.
It's good that they're taking the music in the direction they want to go rather than just keeping the same stuff though, I just wish I'd found out about them earlier so I could have heard more of their older songs live.
Sarah

I think every Album is good and different on there on way. That's why I like TLE because its different and not the same "crap" like other bands!
Yeah, I like that too. (although in the cases of bands like Frenzal Rhomb i love all their same old crap they keep bringing out, and I always wish Eskimo Joe had brought out one oldschool styled LP before changing direction... )
They are 4 very different albums, and whilst I love them all I think that SOE is probably me least loved. Heaps of awsome songs on there (Til the End, Into the Red, etc), just nothing that means a lot to me perhaps. But I think that has more to do with me at the time the record came out, rather than its quality. The first 3 albums I had time to listen to them on repeat for weeks at a time, but I rarely get to listen to a whole album at a time these days. But yeah, if I was stuck on an island for a month with only 3 cds, SOE definately wouldn't be one I'm afraid!
damo0945
09-27-2007, 05:09 PM
to my ears, SOE is much the same musically, but recorded with a cleaner guitar sound so it doesn't have quite the same edge, i think a song like Reborn would have sounded awesome with a Roll On era sound, I do like SOE when i actually listen to it though
Aaron
09-27-2007, 06:25 PM
Hellbound is still my favourite release, but there are elements I quite like right up to State Of Emergency too. I'm more comfortable with the band moving in new directions through maturity than if they were still writing rebellious punky stuff well into their adulthood. I mean, that'd be like the Offspring, ew. :p
(Provided there isn't another Modern Artillery... that album has some ripper songs on it, but it makes me cringe more than any other.)
It's funny - not everyone agrees on the 'best songs' from each album. Is that good or bad?

What Glenn said. ;)
I have to stick up for SOE because the songwriting is so mature, and not in a bad way. On SOE, you can really see how the band has grown musically, and I think it still has that edge that first attracted a lot of us to TLE in the first place. It's good that they're not making another Hellbound every year. I'm glad they're growing and doing different things.
Speaking of which, can't wait for the next one...!!

Question: Why is it that during the recording of Mordern ARTillery, Chris and whoever was interviewed around that time said that they were happy with everything on the album in interviews, and then once the album was released it was all "oh this is a shit album blah blah blah"
Think there was a certain level of optimism going into the studio with MA.
New drummer, much hyped producer etc.
So I guess there was a good feeling about it during the process, but my impression is that once it was produced, it didn't turn out quite as they'd hoped and worked toward...
atomgal
10-04-2007, 01:24 AM
Yeah, and of course, hindsight is 20/20. Also, if you made a new album and were trying to get people into your band (or just let people know you hadn't broken up after not releasing anything for a few years), you wouldn't want to say, "We're good and all, but this album didn't really turn out the way we hoped it would."
I read an interview with a guitarist once who said that he hated everything he recorded six months after it was done. I think the "coulda-woulda-shoulda" syndrome sets in about then for a lot of artists.

Good points! I remember them talking up the production values of State of Emergency, too, which are admittedly tremendous, but as a few of us have heard with the right headphones or speakers, there's a fair bit of background noise working its way into several tracks, which seems to be a first for them.
Now, question time! In the chorus of Short Notice, which of the vocals is Andy? I'm ninety-nine percent positive it's the lower one, but after much soul-searching I decided to ask, just to be sure.
And similarly, does anyone else have a hard time identifying Andy in the iTunes Originals commentary tracks? I could swear he sounds exactly the same as Chris, albeit a bit lower, and only realised it was Andy speaking once when he added "As Chris said earlier..." (in 'I Love Playing Live!') Is he talking in any of the other tracks?

Cynical Answer:
Because they spent a lot of money making the album and they wanted to sell cds.

They're usually good about hanging out outside the bus after shows, in my experience. Sometimes you have to wait for them to get cleaned up and come out of the bus, but if there's enough of a crowd, they will come out and say hi eventually.

Speak for yourself. In regards to TLE I suppose a handshake after politely introducing yourself would be acceptable?
Another question: Whos yells out "Ape Face" in the beginning of the song? I'm guessing its Andy?

They're very approachable. I'm usually shy at first time meetings, so it took me a while to start talking. My mom was doing more talking then I was at one point. :p I felt so much better after Chris said: "Aww, you can say something. We don't bite!"
I got a hug from Andy after, but I was kinda debating whether or not I should ask him for one, because I didn't want to seem like one of those giggly girl fans. My mom was ready to leave and he was going to head back inside the venue, so I asked him while I had the chance, and he was perfectly fine with it. I don't usually ask for a lot.
My only suggestion would be to keep your hands off because people that think they're teddybears or sex dolls really piss me off.

Have a quick listen:
http://media.putfile.com/Red-Letters-and-The-Room
In the left speaker, the intro to The Room. (I'll take down the link, if it's breaching copyright for me to have that up there) In the right speaker, the intro to dc Talk's 'Red Letters' (also follows a similar mini-epic structure), from the end of their 1998 album 'Supernatural'. The pitch, the chords, the unearthly synth sounds, it's a coincidence, right? Or, is Mark Trombino just a really big fan of Christian rap?

I don't get your point...it clearly states that it is The Room and that is from Modern Artillery (says so in the little info bar in media player).
I don't know what it is exactly, but it looks like its just a file someone has uploaded to the site under the "Music, bands, singing" category. Maybe the person thought that the two songs sounded good together and stuck up there?? Who knows.

i haven't listened to it, but i'm guessing the two songs are similar and that they're both being played at the same time on that track

yeah they're both being played at the same time...the room coming thru the left speaker, the other from the right.

Hm? Sorry for the confusion, Colezy, I was the one who put them together and uploaded the file there. I thought it was pretty interesting how similarly they both played out, with the same pitches, especially as the beginnings of 'mini rock operas', and wondered if anyone else thought Mark Trombino was influenced by Red Letters, or if it's just a coincidence. (The synthesised noises don't strike me as a touch that Chris, Owen or Andy would have added, so I figured it was the producer's idea)
