View Full Version : New Album not a Conspiracy
Hey, just for those who don't receive mail, or don't check the website, or don't have myspace or whatever.
"... This will be followed up by a couple of festival dates back home including The Great Escape in Sydney, before setting to work on a new album."
Just thought I'd put this up for future news/refrences or the mods can just delete it i don't care.
anyway, great news. cya.

The recent trend of announcing stuff over Myspace or whatever is stupid - what's the point of publicising a fan mailing list if it never gets used for these type of announcements?

I have to agree. I really don't enjoy MySpace and rarely ever log in. It feels like a long time since I've gotten an email from TLE.

and i agree with whoever said they should use the mailing list instead of myspace. if they send out a myspace bulliten, and you're not online at that exact moment, you never see it (unless you go through the pages upon pages upon PAGES of useless crap bullitens)

Yeah, it's muchly annoying to go through pages of bulletins to find the one you're looking for.
I highly, highly doubt that they won't come back to America. I'm guessing their next album will *probably, maybe, might be* their last... therefore i reckon they'll go on a world tour.. or something along those lines.
But, I could be wrong. I'd prefer that they do what they did last year, have a huge promoted big venue aus tour, then a 'rural' tour... But it's all in the future.
p.s: to Glenn, sorry i was unaware that people already knew, i guess i posted it up cause it was official...

I really highly doubt it, they seem so happy right now, y'know, touring the world and playing gigs and stuff. Although family commitments would increase in the next few years... hmm.
haha this is the perfect foundation for a photoshop challenge... imagine them with grey hair.
but more seriously, id rather wait a whole year if it's going to be on par/better than SOE, it'd be well worth the wait.

Yeah, new albums always take longer than the band says they will.....they've gotta write the tunes, rehearse them, demo them, try them out at gigs and finally record them. I'm hoping for early 2008. And in my opinion if the next album's as good as SOE it'll be a corker!! :)

You could always try reading the front page news on the site too. You're all right though, we've been a little slack doing the news via email as well. It takes SOOOOOOO long to do (like, hours) and MySpace is done in 5 seconds. It's good to get this feedback though.

TLE have had 4 full length albums in their 12ish or more years, some bands churn out an album every year. They are completely the opposite in my view, not that it matters. Quality over quantity!
Evil Chris
02-03-2007, 09:25 PM
They started writing for state of emergency like early 2005. And was released like a year later. Thats what I meant. Compared to others, they do things quite quickly. They are very hard working. The harder working you are, the faster you get things done.
mel_bound
02-03-2007, 09:43 PM
Comparitively I'd say that's slow! Take note that the previous album was released in October 2003, that's 2 and a bit years between those albums. Not including FHOI, because they only had to record 2 songs for that. But then they toured. And also, songs like Into The Red were many years older, but Chris has said they usually use new songs for albums. I can't think of a good example of a band who churns albums out every year, but there are some. I probably can't think of any because they probably all fizzle out after the 2nd album.

I've held off having an opinion on Jet until I had either seen a show of theirs, or bought at least one album. I really liked Are You Gonna Be My Girl, well, I still like that song - its simple and catchy and just good fun.
However, seeing it live was terribly disappointing. As was seeing Jet. The singer dude (Chris or Nick, I can never remember!) was pretty wasted, and apparently the show was pretty average compared to their BDO shows - but if you can't hold it together for a bit over an hour a day then you might as well not bother in my book.
I have one of those Jet chick tees (black and white with a pink 'Jet' and 'Shine On') that I want to give away if anyone wants it. It's tiny though - you wouldn't want to be bigger than a size 8, and you'd have to like things tight. haha, I managed to get it on somehow, but had to get someone to take it off for me, not a very pleasant experience!
As for Wolfmother, the guys hair just gives me the shits.
And the Vines do absolutely nothing for me. Get Free was a pretty nothing song, and it went down hill from there as far as I'm concerned!
/Sarah's rant on current Aussie rock

Vines are one of my favourites- easily up there with TLE- I think to get into them you have to see past all the 2002 hype and look into the other songs a bit more. Their songs are incredibly diverse and Craig has a great ear for a hook and has an amazing voice and is incredible with harmonies. Get Free isn't among my favourite songs of theirs at all- they do that whole thing really well but they do other types of song so much better.
Sure, they've had their fair share of off days; but they have 3 great albums behind them. About to hit the studio to record the 4th sometime this month.

we've gone a bit off topic but here's my 2 cents on aussie rock:
the vines have a couple of ok songs but other than that they dont have much...plus their lead singer is a dickhead. i saw them on music max on 'later with jools holland' and he is just a wanker who screams and kicks drums over. maybe if he just stood and sang they'd be better.
i like jet a lot and saw them at the sydney BDO & thought they played really well. i think they are just a no nonsense rock n roll band which is what i like.
wolfmother are great muusically but their singer's voice can get on my nerves if i listen to them too much...but other than that i think they are good.
eskimo joe are overrated & overplayed (yet better than the vines)
but...none of them have anything on the living end!!
Habibster

Um... hate to break it to ya pal but that was before he was diagnosed as an aspergers syndrome sufferer... he basically didn't know what he was doing. those performances were in 2003 if they're the ones i am thinking of- painful to watch. I think you'll find that since vision valley came out and he has learned to deal with his AS their live performaces have been incredible. so, in conclusion, not a dickhead or a wanker; just a highly functioning autistic.
Also, if you had listened to them enough, and this goes for any of you- you at least have to conceed that he has an incredible ear and an incredible voice.

The last Vines LATW was surprisingly boring.
thelivingvines
02-08-2007, 10:20 PM
so you're basing your opinion on that one gig are you? well let me put it in context for you. At the end of the tour for winning days, Craig was charged with assault after he kicked the camera out of the hand of a member of the press in front of the stage. Their bassest left the band. Craig was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome. His mental stability has been severely at risk after his chosen profession had placed him in the worst possible environment for someone suffering from AS. To all it seemed like the vines were over- at least that's what everyone thought.
Craig went through months of intensive therapy and was being dosed up on valium to keep him calm through the court proceedings and in dealing with everythign else that they had been through. Vision Valley is an album written by a broken man writing from a dark dark place. The LATW performance was the first gig they had played in front of any sort of audience in 3 years. They had just about everything on the line at that gig, their record company, their jobs, their album... pretty much everything they had established before it all went wrong in 2004. Don't you think it's understandable that they may be a little cautious and incredibly nervous? you can see it in the performance. I agree its not their best but everything since then has been worthy of at least some praise whether you like their music particularly or not. Read the reviews, go see them if you get the chance.
I don't expect you to convert or anything; I understand that you might not like their music in particular, but you have to acknowledge their talent whether its something you particularly enjoy or not.

Cold Hard Bitch, Roll Over DJ, Are You Gonna Be My Girl and that last one I forgot. They sound the same. When I first heard them I thought theyd be alright. Anyway, I wonder what sort of direction this album will go in and what sort of feel/sound it will have to it? I'd like to see a slow-ish song on it..one that really shows the potential of Chris' voice :) (I hope you all understand what I mean! :p)

I wouldn't mind seeing a little EP as a stopgap sort of thing in between albums. Like I think it was One Said To The Other EP. Or play in space.
My first TLE gig was a few months after my first cd of theirs, and I don't think I've missed an underage melbourne gig since then.
Personally I wasn't too keen on SOE so I'm hoping their next album goes in a different direction. I really like what they did with Rising Sun so I'd love it if their new album sounded similar to that.

fuck that, I'm allowed to be as defensive as I like. I couldn't care less if you don't like them- but if you can't acknowledge talent then you simply don't know anything about music. I think you'll find a lot of people still love the vines and their audiences testify that. Just because they aren't the 'trend of the moment' doesn't mean that they aren'y any good any more. There are plenty of people out there who don't like the living end for whatever reason and you know perfectly well that you would expect them to acknowledge at the very least that they are great song writers and great musicians.
Sure, Craig might not be an amazing guitarist- but he has an incredible- and i mean incredible- vioce. And a great talent for writing catchy tunes. If you can't acknowledge that then I would question how much of them you have actually listened to beyond the singles they have released and I would also question whether you know anything about music at all.

What the fuck? No I don't. I'll say what I like, I heard it with my own ears. I thought it was ordanairy. I don't give a shit what the reviews are saying
awh, look at the big man getting all riled up because he knows he's wrong. You heard a gig in the context of what I explained above. Go listen to their albums before you express another opinion. You clearly know nothing.

I first heard POS/SS in 97 and didn't go to my first TLE gig until 2004..if I lived in another state, I reckon I would have seen them sooner.
Anyway, I wonder what sort of direction this album will go in and what sort of feel/sound it will have to it? I'd like to see a slow-ish song on it..one that really shows the potential of Chris' voice :) (I hope you all understand what I mean! :p)
well they've done low production, they've done high production, they've tried for the live sound and didn't feel like they pulled it off but accidentally made a friggin awesome record in the process... I think they could try for the live sound again and see what happens. I hope they come up with something like wake up again. I'm generally not so much of a fan of their slow numbers, somehow it doesn't suit them, but that one is immense.
Saying someone is talented is just a matter of opinion though, it depends what you consider talented.
If someone says that TLE aren't talented, I disagree but it doesn't mean they're wrong, it just means they have a different idea of talent to me.

there's a difference between liking something and acknowledging talent. Musical ability isn't subjective. If someone tells you that they think chris isn't a good guitarist or that he can't sing then they clearly don't know what a good guitarist or a good singer is regardless of the style they play. Being able to acknowledge talent whether it is something you particularly like or not shows you at least have some knowledge of what a good musician sounds like. Fucked if I like any classical music- but I can acknowledge that Mozart was talented. Same goes for dreamtheatre- I don't like any of what they do at all, but you would have to be an idiot to say they are shit at music.

of course its not. are you telling me its perfectly ok to say that someone like brian setzer isn't talented? is it ok to say that matt bellamy isn't talented, or jeff buckley? that fine with you is it? it fuckin shouldn't be cos although some people may not like what they play they are clearly talented individuals. People don't want to have to skip through pages and pages of shit when they're reading through threads in General Endness.
Off topic is a little different, and The Room is full of shit anyway, so take your convos about The Vines to either The Room or make another thread especially for that band.
And yes, I also can't wait to see the video for this track, especially if it's as good as the song sounds! :D
no, you guys just need to relax and stop being so anal about keeping the forum 'neat and tidy.' people are perfectly capable of skipping pages they don't want to read... I think this is pretty much done anyway.
And are people not also perfectly capable of posting in the right thread to save others from sorting through pages of arguments to find what the thread is meant to be about? Not everybody has super-speedy internet.
There's nothing wrong with debating the talent of the vines but at least take it to the room if not a vines related thread.
OKAY, SORRY I'M DONE!

And for the record, what I meant by a slowish song was something with maybe just an acoustic guitar, drums and vocals..
I was thinking about that the other day actually.....heaps of other bands have the token just-acoustic-guitar-and-vocals song on their albums, but TLE have never done it. Not to be mean to Chris or anything, but I wonder whether it would sound any good? It's just so hard to imagine TLE not rocking out, even in their 'slower' songs! :)

I dunno how it'd be with Andy singing. Definately not lead, but let him do some shouts and backing, for sure.
It'd be interesting if we could get Scott on lead for one song...his singing has come a long way since 95...i reckon he could pull it off. He's a bit higher up so perhaps he could do a slower song. who knows. Even if he doesn't go up front, just bring back proper backing vocals from Scotty (and Andy)...I realise having Chris sing his own backing makes for a more perfect sound, but quite frankly...fuck that. This is the best live band in the country, let them record an album wth the same essential formula.
Further to that, I think they should once again go for the balls-out, live rock and roll feel on this album. They tried it on the last album but everything got big on them again (perhaps with the exception of Into The Red)...strip it back again and have another crack....and I love the idea of keeping studio cutoff in the mix at the end...like andy striking in to the first song, and the off the cuff comments in the background.
Oh, and how about we get a new album...coz i can't wait...even if it's electro. (I just like to appear picky!)

yeahh that would be goo like he did for one step behind, he did the harmony with scott and that is a pretty high pitched harmony so he has got a good range!
It'd be interesting if we could get Scott on lead for one song...his singing has come a long way since 95...
shit yes it has! watching the really old school video's he did very little singing, and the harmony's in a song like second solution are not much compared to nothing last's forever or what's on your radio.
I realise having Chris sing his own backing makes for a more perfect sound, but quite frankly...fuck that.
this is the best reply i have seen your write glenn! i totally agree. if your gonna do it live you may aswell play it on the record like your gonna do it live. especially with vocal harmony's and stuff like that. i mean a solo like til the end obviously you cant do live and sounds awesome on the record so you could keep something like that but just a straight up rock'n'roll song like a AC/DC song would be awesome.
and I love the idea of keeping studio cutoff in the mix at the end...like andy striking in to the first song, and the off the cuff comments in the background.
"my hi hats fell apart". do you rekon he said that on purpose or he jsut said it coz he thought they would cut it out?
This may come as a bit of a shock, but I reckon he said that because his hi-hats fell apart.
Hahahah. I love you Bec! :p

And I'd also like to hear Scott/Andy on backing vocals. I find it sounds kinda weird having two or more Chrisses singing at once.

I hope so, you would think that he would want to considering the way he was talking about them on the DVD. I reckon they work really well together.
