Andrew W.K announces lineup here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-75vEQqnqI

The 2011 Big Day Out dates have been locked in and the first lot of acts on the bill have been announced.

After kicking off in Auckland as usual, the Big Day Out will circle Australia with shows on these dates:

Sun Jan 23: Gold Coast - Parklands
Wed Jan 26: Sydney - Showground
Sun Jan 30: Melbourne - Flemington Racecourse
Fri Feb 4: Adelaide - Showground
Sun Feb 6: Perth - Claremont Showground

But who's playing?

As expected, there's a big list of international headliners.

TOOL last played the Big Day Out in 2007 while they were touring their album 10,000 Days. The band has taken a long hiatus, setting out on just a handful of tours since. They confirmed this year that they're working hard on their next release, which we can expect in 2011. Who knows what will be in their set at the 2011 Big Day Out?

German industrial metal act RAMMSTEIN haven't played in Australia since touring with the Big Day Out in 2001. They're coming back to showcase their sixth studio album Liebe ist fur alle da which they released last October.

Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees IGGY AND THE STOOGES are playing the festival for the second time and legendary Scottish rockers PRIMAL SCREAM will be doing their third Big Day Out tour, performing their classic 1991 album Screamadelica in full.

Italian house producers BLOODY BEETROOTS were in Australia earlier this year with their Death Crew 77. Fans who missed that tour now get another chance to catch them in duo mode.

When we caught up with them at Splendour LCD SOUNDSYSTEM promised us they'd be back within a year - and they're making good on that promise. Their recent shows have been earning them rave reviews and they’re sure to be a highlight act when they’re here again next January.

EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROES will also return to Australia after a tour earlier this year that showcased their debut album Up From Below and the killer single 'Home'.

M.I.A will play her second run of Big Days Out, giving us the live show that goes with her recent album Maya.

Nick Cave's band GRINDERMAN are also on the line-up. It's only the second time the band has played live in Australia since forming in 2006.

The rest of the impressive cast of international acts are BOOKA SHADE, LUPE FIASCO, THE BLACK KEYS, RATATAT, CSS, DEFTONES, DIE ANTWOORD, ANDREW W.K, VITALIC, THE JIM JONES REVIEW, PLAN B, THE NAKED AND FAMOUS, KIDS OF 88 and CRYSTAL CASTLES (East Coast shows only).

Plus there's a big contingent of Australian artists like BIRDS OF TOKYO, JOHN BUTLER TRIO, ANGUS AND JULIA STONE, CHILDREN COLLIDE, BLISS N ESO, DEAD LETTER CIRCUS, BLUE KING BROWN, GYPSY AND THE CAT, LITTLE RED, PNAU and heaps more.

Tickets go on sale on these dates:

Gold Coast on sale 7 October
Sydney on sale 6 October
Melbourne on sale 8 October
Adelaide on sale 8 October
Perth on sale 8 October

========SIDESHOWS========

Here are the dates:

Mon 24 Jan - Entertainment Centre BRISBANE

Any rumours getting about?

The main ones kickin' at the moment are:

Stone Temple Pilots
Soundgarden
Kings of Leon
Tool

BDO have given a clue about the headliner:

One of the Big Day Out 2011 headline acts live in Los Angeles, California, USA. The other headliner doesn't. Both are bands, neither are solo performers

I've heard that Weezer could be playing. They fit the living in LA category.

i heard a Good Charlotte rumour.
also heard possible Children Collide

FlyingV

hmm are weezer even big enough to headline?

I reckon we will get Birds Of Tokyo, John Butler Trio, Gyroscope and children collide as aussie bands.

as for headliners no idea, but I reckon soundwave is looking harder to top...

Kev

Word. Soundwave is HUGE this year.

Weezer would be 2nd Headliner if they were to play. RHCP are another rumour kicking about seeing they just started recording their next album

Somebody said John Frusciante was going to play which would absolutely make my life, but I really can't see it happening.

mmmm none of those bands do anything for me to be honest. I really dont want a cash in reunion 90's band to play a half assed set (Im looking at you STP and Soundgarden) And I used to enjoy Kings Of Leon but I can't imagine them being too exiting live :(

Kings of Leon are touring here in March. So they're not playing BDO.

On the other hand some tool that works for Channel V said that Blink are playing. But that puts AJ from Soundwaves comment out, because he said that another promoter have got them for their own shows..

But from another clue the BDO people gave us:

In ‘10 Mastodon performed their amazing album ‘Crack The Skye’ in its entirety. One of the 2011 acts will perform their classic album. PS they have played BDO before.

According to SNI, the better BDO board:

Tool
Rammstein
Iggy & The Stooges performing Raw Power

That would rule.

Blink playing Cheshire Cat/Dude Ranch? It'll never happen, but my oh my would it be awesome. Or any of their other albums for that matter. Or just a regular set, I've never seen them

I agree that BDO died in the arse many years ago but I'd probably make the sacrifice to see STP who will probably just do sideshows any way...

His voice is one of the first things I liked when I first heard one of their songs (The Bucket). I love it, it's like he struggles to get each word out.

But I guess he's no Avril Lavigne.

Lineup announced 12midnight tonight!

Not really excited for it yet. But it could change between now and then.

It might also be the first year since 1999 I haven't been to a BDO. It will all depend on lineup

Rammstein aren't doing sideshows and Tool are most likely to do their own thing later on in the year, much like Muse.

Having 2 Sydney BDO's means that there will not be a Sideshow for Sydney. People on the BDO facebook page are getting cranky.

BDO Sydney stuggling to shift tickets for the 2nd show....??

BRING A FRIEND FOR FREE: YIPPEE!!!
THURSDAY JANUARY 27TH SYDNEY BIG DAY OUT only

That’s right, all ticket holders for the Sydney Thursday January 27th BDO 2011 event will be allowed to bring a friend for free, no tricks, no gimmicks.

Very rarely does an opportunity of this scale become possible for a festival to thank its supporters.

The high demand for the Jan 26th Australia Day show combined with the overwhelming number of international tours and events this summer has necessitated a choice to be made for the good of the event.

Because our audience is such a valued part of the show, we felt you deserved a reward for 18 years of support.

So, if you couldn’t get the day off work, or couldn’t afford a ticket this year, or missed out in Gold Coast or Melbourne, we are offering to everyone who’s bought a ticket or buys a ticket to the Sydney Thursday January 27th BDO 2011 the right to bring a friend.

There will not be a ballot, these are the final ticket sales. A 4 ticket limit is in place.

For those with tickets to the first show on Australia Day, please accept this as a plus, not a minus: You & a friend have a chance to catch the acts you missed the 1st day. For half price!

There are no forms to fill in, all that is required is that you have your guest with you at the ticket trip point on the day. All the same conditions of sale and admission apply to you and your guest, so please check your ticket or our website for details.

Merry Xmas from the Big Day Out!!!!

NB: This offer does not include Guest tickets.

To help with general queries, here are some basic Q & As:

Q: Do I need to have the person with me?

Press release from this morning:

The Black Keys unable to appear at Big Day Out

Paul Dempsey added to the line up (AUS SHOWS)

For Immediate Release: Monday, 17 January, 2011:

The Big Day Out is disappointed to announce that The Black Keys will be unable to perform on any of the 2011 Big Day Out events in Australia or New Zealand due to exhaustion.

The band have provided the following information as explanation to event patrons and fans:

“The Black Keys are sorry to announce the cancellation of the New Zealand and Australian tour including all appearances at the Big Day Out touring festival as well as a portion of the European tour in March. An arduous year of touring and promotion has drained the band and necessitated time off.

Dan and Patrick wish to thank all of you who have shown such incredible support since the release of ‘Brothers’ and have helped make the album a success.”

On a positive note, Big Day Out promoters are pleased to confirm the new inclusion of the most excellent Paul Dempsey who is returning from New York to reunite with his band especially for these Australian shows.

We are also proud to now include the fantastic New Zealand attraction Kora as the Auckland replacement.

Take care,

Big Day Out Promoters
