Name: Ian D'sa

Band from (if applicable): Billy Talent

Cool on stage picture: http://www.montrealgazette.com/entertainment/2722588.bin?size=620x400

Gear:

He uses mostly HSS strats, in various colours, and sometimes HH Tele's
into this pedalboard
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/6667/pedalboardbt.jpg

which is; Boss TU-2 > Zvex Wooly Mammoth (actually a bass guitar pedal) > some other brand "comptortion" which is a compressor and distortion in one, then a boss reverb.
the two on the right are footswitches for his 2 amps which look a little something like this

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/4971/btamps.jpg

they are 2 60w Stephenson amps made by another awesome canadian amp builder

Why you like them / their style: He has this awesome way of playing which by playing in drop D he plays both a melody and a rhythm part, the other thing is he uses these like Jazz chords in there and barely ever does he have a guitar solo. but he still manages to get these cool lead breaks... yeah all round cool stuff

Good good, i've been waiting for a thread like this haha.

Um, first off James Hetfield. I don't think i need to explain anything about that one. Then Setzer.

Name: Guthrie Govan

Band from (if applicable): Solo artist, but i think his band is/was called 'Erotic Cakes'

Why you like them / their style: Influenced me to pick up some Jazz/Fusion licks, But he's one of the most versatile guitarists i've seen/heard, just such an amazing feel for the guitar, his bends are spot on, legato and tapping work is insane, mixes melody with shred well. He is an amazing teacher also, and just a real top bloke
Best representation of their style (video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yPEewaalik

Name: John Petrucci

Band from (if applicable): Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment/Solo.

Why you like them / their style: Introduced me to a more technical aspect of playing, and a different approach to the guitar.

Best representation of their style (video): Stream of Consciousness Solo / DT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITIfITKGhVw)

My guitar playing technique is pretty much based off a Hetfield rhythm/Petrucci lead. Or so i like to think haha.

Well, id say usually Brian Setzer, Stu Arkoff or Rory Gallagher. but ill go with one that i equally love and that i don't think many have ever heard of.

Name: Ryan 'Ryzzo' Malcom

Band from (if applicable): Penguin (Local Canberra band)

Cool on stage picture: http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/124/l_8b4f7c942cbc4224bc9865f33f3b5ef3.jpg

Gear:Ryan uses a Black Maton MS2000std through a classic Marshall JCM800, Not sure on his pedal setup, ive seen him occasionally use a jackhammer though.

Why you like them / their style: There's quite alot i like about this guy, from his guitar riffs on recordings to the energy & very wild solos on stage. He's very Heavy Rock / Psychedelic based, but then again he's used jazz 'type/sounding' stuff during live performances. I'll leave it at that haha :P

Best representation of their style (video): No videos, but if ya wanna have a listen - http://www.myspace.com/theguin check out Vaginal Vengeance :D

One things for sure though......He's no Cheney! :D

QUOTE]

Good man! I've often thought there's times when Ian's tone has a Cheney-esq tinge to it, particularly on II - I think I remember hearing part of Covered in Cowardice and thinking (instrumentally) it sounded like the strokes and Chris had a baby.

Yeah I can see it a little. But the playing is just so totally different.

Name: John C Mayer

Band from (if applicable): John Mayer, John Mayer Trio

Cool on stage picture:
John with the legend himself, BB King

Gear:
It's easier for me just to link you to the gear list from a fan page, that John submitted himself. It's a bit outdated now, but it's the best I could find:
http://johnmayer.yuku.com/topic/1369/t/UPDATED-JOHN-S-GEAR-LIST-FROM-JOHN-HIMSELF.html

Why you like them / their style: The smoothness of his vocals and the tones that come from his guitars.

ooooo i like this thread, i may do a couple :)

ok i'll kick things off with...

Name:Mr. Ian Moss

Band from (if applicable): Cold Chisel

Cool on stage picture:
http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/Joab808/ian-moss-live.jpg

Gear: Mossy's is mainly known for using his strats, however he has delved into tele's, 335's and more recently good old Gretschies :D he always used to use his old jcm800 as an amp, but i'm not sure what he's using now. also uses a VERY tasteful analogue deeeelay.

Why you like them / their style: as cheney said himself, he just plays the right notes all the time. every note he plays adds something to the song, nothing is there simply for flash. sooo much feel to compliment the songs, and his tone is awesome too!

Best representation of their style (video):
i just had a quick search. not too much guitar work in it but for sweet tone, this strat is sounding lovely to me..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdVRNDnTKTU

also, have a read of THIS, an interview with cheney and mossy together, sheer brilliance!...

Name: Jed Kurzel

Band from (if applicable): The Mess Hall

Cool on stage picture:
http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/Joab808/jedkurzel.jpg

http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/Joab808/jedkurzel2.jpg

ok so i liked them both..

Gear: Jed loves his fenders, plays a few strats and tele's. i'm pretty sure a few of them are in different tunings. he also has this weeirrrddd eko guitar (picyured below) that he uses for songs off the lastest album, pretty cool sounding. ampwise, he's a fender man too. no idea what they are, i just know that they are fender combo's and look very old and ratty... and cool!! effectswise, at the cambridge on their recent tour i spotted a DS-1 and an EHX big box DMM and thats all that i could make out.

http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/Joab808/jedkurzelwitheko.jpg

Why you like them / their style: Jed is just awesome. restrains himself well to give everything to the song. and his voice is AWESOME, the man CAN wail. seeing as its a two piece it doesnt reeeallyy allow for solo's but his rhythm work is brilliant.

Best representation of their style (video):
heres one of thier songs 'City of Roses'... terrible bootlegs of live recordings only on the net.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhpc9yHeb0I

highly recommend the band though, theyve got some top songs.

There's some good choices here, yeah apparently it was just after that interview with Mossy & Cheney that they tried out each others' rigs & Mossy loved the Gretsch sound and went out & bought one :) also I think he was using two Vox AC30's from memory at one of his solo gigs recently (got to meet him as well ;)) but im guessing he still uses the JCM800 for Chisel stuff.

Joab
10-07-2010, 05:37 PM
i'm guessing not... well not THAT 800.

it was for sale at mitch's local music shop a while back!

but yeah it said that in the interview i linked up about mossy loving chris's stuff and planning on getting a G-retsch. very cool!

Mitch-PTV
10-07-2010, 09:20 PM
haha it may not have been THAT 800, but it was A 800 owned (and modded for) Mossy.
Also Joab, you might know, who makes his strats? when i saw chisel last, he had a fender or 2, but there were strats there im pretty sure were custom builds.
also, that analog dely your talking about, at the V8's, he had a fulltone tube tape echo thing. one of those big white ones ;)
also, im pretty sure i saw a couple of Hiwatts too... not positive on that, but im pretty sure.

great choices guys, im enjoying this thread :) when i get youtube back ill do one... probably on Setzer... which is very cheney-esque, but still, he deserves an honourable mention.

Can't believe nobody has said this guy :woot:

Name: John Frusciante

Band from (if applicable): Red Hot Chili Peppers/Solo work (Incredible stuff)

Cool on stage picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/John_Frusciante_2.jpg

Gear: Internet says this is his set-up, I had no idea it was so extreme...

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vUMSxJ-Km1o/THfC6_nMoGI/AAAAAAAAFbk/mKZEkmhaVrs/s1600/frusciante-pedalboard-2006a.jpg

Why you like them / their style: First of all he looks like he is having an orgasm everytime he solo's which is just plain funny. But from a guitarist's perspective it's just his style, his choice of notes, his tastefull solo's and his love of improv (something I really love doing myself)

He does indeed solo but they fit the song instead of "hey look I can shred" which really peeves me off with most metal and progressive guitarists.

Best representation of their style (video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl3RGlhWirU shows his improv and stage persona.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9-MeZRlm9Y shows how he can take a simple ramones song and make it amazing.

Name: Dave Grohl

Band from (if applicable): Foo Fighters / Nirvana / Them Crooked Vultures / Tenacious D / Probot Seemingly every other band in existence EVER

Cool on stage picture:

http://www.freedrumlessons.com/media/drummers/dave-grohl-pic1.jpg

Gear:

Dave has used like every guitar imaginable i think.
Gibson Firebirds
Dan Armstrong Plexi guitars

Recently though he uses his signature Gibson Trini Lopez guitars, which are like awesomer 335's.
runs it into 2 Mesa Boogie Roadkings

dont actually know if dave has a pedalboard other than the 10m long footswtich for the road king... I'm serious too

http://www.hs-online.com/images/products/340/1331-0.jpg
ITS AS WIDE AS THE AMP IS!

Why you like them / their style: because he barely ever uses regular chords, theres always some awesome open strings in there which just makes everything sound so different and original. and he's been making awesome rock music for so long... and EVERYTHING he does turns to gold!
Plus he is such a cool dude

Cool on stage picture:

Gear:
Gretschies > Fender Bassmans > Roland 301 Space Echo.

Why you like them / their style:
i just love his style, its great to listen to, and his leads tell a story. i like how he isnt restricted by a certain style of music. sure he is playing rockabilly, but in the same 20 seconds, he jumps from rock n roll, to jazz, to blues, ties in a little country lick, then back to chugging along that rockabilly palm muting, and he does it so seamlessly.
sure he can play fast, but he always has melody, and the passion in his playing really shines through.

he really has mastered the guitar.

Name: Malcolm Young

Band from (if applicable):
AC/DC.

Cool on stage picture:
the guy pretty much stands there, but im gunna go with this picture, because his mouth is open, and the camera angle makes him look dominant... which is about as cool as it gets for Mal.

http://www.freewebs.com/acdcgodown/malcolm_young_07.jpg

Gear:
Gretschies > Marshall or Wizards. depending what era we're a-talkin about.

Why you like them / their style:
He has to be one of the most solid rhythm guitarists in rock. he writes great riffs, and is instantly recognizable. he pretty much defined not only Aussie rock, but shaped the sound of rock music on a global scale.

what i love about Malcolm tho, is that while his bother is running a riot on stage, playing these amazing leads, Mal just stands back, plays his open chords, defines a genre of music, and stays comfortably out of the lime light.

i hate using the expression "the most under rated guitarist", but in Malcolms case, i think it rings true. No one cares about what Malcolm is doing back there. everyone is focused on Angus, meanwhile, the people that do acknowledge he is actually on the stage, criticise him for being uncreative, and saying that every AC/DC song is the same because he cant write a riff. all i can really say to that is put on the Highway to Hell Album, listen to it cover to cover, and then get back to me ;)

Not a muso so not going to get into gear and tech shit but I loves me a good "favorite guitarists/drummers/bassists" thread.

Billy Zoom

Band(s): X, Billy Zoom Band

Gear: Gretsch Silverjet (that's all I know)

Described as "so cool he was almost glacial". You've heard the term "effortless mastery"? Well, that's Billy Zoom. Makes Brian Setzer look like a 3-chord wonder by comparison. This guy talks the talk and walks the walk. Also plays a wicked saxaphone and his father played with Django Rheinhardt.

What sets him apart from other punk guitarists is that X's strength was their songwriting (Exene Cervenka and John Doe are the Simon and Garfunken/Lennon and McCartney of punk rock in my humble opinion) and they didn't have to rely on individual brilliance. As a result, Billy is forced to have a bit of "restraint" when he plays, especially in his solos.

Doesn't really have a "cool on stage photo" because he doesn't have to resort to poses and faces and stances... but here's a couple. First pic is of Billy with X in their hey day. 2nd is a more modern Billy.

http://www.gibson.com/Files/aaFeaturesImages2008/billy%20zoom.jpg
http://www.billyzoom.com/images/silverjet.jpg

His most "knock your socks off" riff is easily the intro to "Beyond & Back" off the 1981 masterpiece 'Wild Gift'.

Honorable mentions to:

Dave Alvin (The Blasters/The Knitters)
Vernon Reid (Living Colour- four words- "Cult of Personality" solo)
Paige Hamilton (Helmet)
Ruyter Suys (Nashville Pussy... she's pretty much Angus Young with tits)
Johnny Hiland (Hank Williams III)
Tom Dumont (No Doubt)

Beating around the bush, probs my (almost) favourite AC/DC song. Another good example is the extented solo rhythm section on High voltage and jailbreak live at donnington.
