Has a cool automatic retuning system, at the flick of a switch and acoustic modeling, on board

Thats nothing new really, its just doing what is possibly with standard Midi. The auto tuning method is just a transposition mode within the midi Protocol and it will only effect the pitches coming from the synthesizer. It won't correct the guitars tuning when playing through an amplifier.

The negative is, its still midi... Its been around since the early 80's and has become so common that the industry has boxed itself into a corner with a very aging and outdated protocol.

the difference between this and the last model is this is completely onboard digital, the last one still had the midi device.
Of course your guitar would still need to be in tune, but wouldnt it need to be anyway playign a show through an amp?

Its a little different. This fender is still a midi guitar. Midi is merely a set of instructions, it doesn't actually make a sound. It sends infomation like note on, note off, velocity (volume of note) etc. Since it is just a set of instructions, it can control pretty much any sound imaginable. This fender has an onboard midi module with only guitar sounds (12 string, strat, tele, humbuckers, etc). When you play a note on the guitar and are using those extra sounds (ie not the normal single coil pickups in the guitar), you are synthesizing the sounds through the onboard processor. Plucking the strings triggers a digital oscillator to create a certian shaped waveform at a specific pitch which is then outputted to your guitar amplifier.

The line 6 guitars only ever use the vibration of the strings and the pickups to create the sound. The line 6 guitar is like playing a guitar through a pod, or other effects unit. They have just put the effects unit in the guitar.
