April, 29 2007 at The Good Shepherd's Circus Pie @ The Corner Hotel
Swan Street, Richmond, Victoria
Cost : $15
The countdown is on to Melbourne’s newest gala community event, The Good Shepherd’s Circus Pie Classic, set to take to the stage at the Corner Hotel on Sunday 29 April 2007. This is how it works- we’ve conned 20 musos and radio heads to get into teams and “cook off” against each other, Iron Chef style. They’ll be assembling tasty dishes based on a secret ingredient, and judged on the culinary creativity and innovation whilst preserving the integrity of the food item… or (ahem), perhaps just producing something edible! The chef roll call is Scott Owen & Andy Strachan from The Living End, Died Pretty’s Ron Peno, Ally Spazzy, Rebecca Barnard, Macromantics, Dan Kelly, Angie Hart, Lindsay MacDougall (Frenzal Rhomb), Candy Bowers (Sista She), Bob Log III, Link Meanie, Lisa Miller, PBS’s Kene Lightfoot, Paddy Donovan (The Age) and RRR’s Holly C, Mia Dyson, & Dallas Crane front man Dave Larkin. And the judges are no light weights! Epicure’s John Lethlean, Mecca’s Cath Claringbold, & Andrew McConnell (Three One Two) will bravely sample the delicacies dished up by this Motley cooking crew. You’ll be kept well and truly on your toes with action updates from commentary panel Helen Razer (774), Clem Bastow (journo and all round tops chick), and Melbourne Food & Wine Festival’s creative director Matt Preston, plus behind the scenes catastrophe coverage picked up by our trusty ‘Food-cam’. Providing the backing tracks for this clash of cuisines, live music from 6 Ft Hick, Little Red and Wayfaring Strangers, plus The Meanies put the icing on the cake to wrap it all up at the end with some very special guests. Watching over proceedings are referees Jason ‘Evo’ Evans and Gabi (The Town Bikes). Ms Fat Booty will be dropping in to do something exquisite on wheels, as will Monkey Brigade (Sassy, wild Hip Hop dance outfit), plus rock toones from Joelistics (TZU) and DJ Mary M, as well as formidable judging theme music from BlackMamaWhitePapa (Crazy Baldheads). It’s a party, it’s a circus, and it’s all for the kids. Our extensive cast are doing it for nicks, and you can do your bit too! Buying a ticket and having a Fosters bevvie contributes to helping our friends at Good Shepherd Youth and Family Service, a highly respected grassroots community service organisation serving the needs of Melbourne’s young people, women and families living under the burden of poverty and disadvantage. So get it on! Sunday 29th April at The Corner Hotel, doors 4pm. Tickets $15 + BF and available at the Corner Box Office, phone 3 9427 9198 or www.cornerhotel.com

if it's at the Corner you need to be over 18 regardless of whether your guardians are with you.
I found out the hard way 2 years ago when I went to see my friends play
*edit* although if it starts at 4 you could be alright.
Most places don't enforce overageness till 8 onwards

Yep, its a cook off for teams of two made up from Aussie bands and radio personailities. As far as I can tell, they get a secret ingredient and have to cook something which they will be judged on.
There will be entertainment too, to keep people happy :)

Hi Amy,
Unfortunately we are unable to allow anyone under the age of 18 into the band room (where the cook off will be held) as proof of age identification is required from all patrons upon entry into the venue. HOWEVER, we are willing to make an exception for you. The conditions are that you must come with a parent and be under their supervision for the duration of the event.

Even with strictly 18+ events, you sometimes hear about U18s getting in, but I wouldn't risk it (especially at Corner) unless somebody has told you definitely that you can get in.
I guess if you can't get in, you can always go to Curry Munchers :p Avoid the chicken/hamburger place shop across the road. When I ordered something there before a gig once, the guy serving me had sweat pouring off him.
Grumma
04-14-2007, 11:45 AM
Yeah some places just don't care; and just use "18+" to scare all the little kiddies off.
But like I've said about 5 times in this thread; The Corner is one of the more strict places going around

I've had a few gigs that I found out AFTER that you were allowed in with a guardian, so now I always check with the venue before hand. It doesn't fuss me, normally my mum comes to gigs with me anyway. I don't see why Amy was told she was allowed in with a guardian when we were told we weren't. Obviously they arn't very strict if they're willing to "make an exception".
Grumma
04-14-2007, 03:19 PM
Yeah that's a bit odd . . .
I'm just pissed off that they're willing to bend the rules for some people but not others.
Grumma
04-14-2007, 03:22 PM
Yeah.
She could've had a different person authorise it to the one your mum got on the phone. Few different possibilities
Maybe, the lady I spoke to said "We have people ask us that all the time" and mum said she said the same thing to her. But still, it shouldn't depend on who you ask, rules are rules.

04-14-2007, 03:27 PM

Though it would be kinda funny if she turned up and they don't let her in :pThat's a possibility. At RHCP, we got little cards with our tickets saying we could bring picnic rugs, etc. Then at the show, security guards were saying you couldn't bring them in. Inconsistency shits me.

Get off your high horse and accept some underage people like music and bands as much as overagers do
*edit* not directed at cam!
Outlaw Love Song
04-14-2007, 05:12 PM
What high horse? I can accept that music is for everybody cos everybody digs it in one way or another. If I didn' believ that I'd probably start turning by back on bands I have always loved becase they are too popular, mainstream etc. But I don't.
The thing that pisses me off is that whenever something like this comes up theres all these half baked ideas being brandied about as to how underagers can get in.
Sure, if its within the boundaries of whats acceptable with events like this then fair play to you. Someone got into the Good Friday benefit that the Runaway Boys were playin beacause they were accompanied by a parent/guardian and someone was told they can come to the cook off if they were supervised by their parent/gardian over the course of the evening.
If you are in a position where you can get in and enjoy yourself then you've earnt it and fair play to you.
But really, how many of these "ideas" for getting/sneaking in actually come to fruition? Do people even make the effort to turn up?
The reason there are over 18's event's is simple. Adults like to socialize with other adults, and in doing that alot of these adults like to drink alcohol whilst being there. To drink alcohol they must purchase it there as pretty much all places won't let you bring your own. To buy alcohol, the venue must sell it and in order to sell it they need a licence and this licence prevents u18's from being in the areas that are selling alcohol, reguardless of wherther they are with a parent or not, because anyone can just walk up to the bar and buy a drink. If they get caught with u18's in there they could loose their licence - which (at the most extreme of things) could mean no more shows. That is also why some gigs are "licenced all ages" - because they go out of their way to get another licence which allows this and that's why over 18's have wristbands and things to show that they are over 18 but venues don't want to do this all the time because adults need adult time and sometimes they do and say things that kids/teens shouldn't see/hear (which is why movies and tv programs have age restrictions too). How annoying are little kids who run around screaming in a restaurant? very annoying. Adults find under 18's annoying at shows in the same way. When you turn 18, you'll realise why you weren't allowed to go because you'll see how the 15 year olds really are, and even though you may not think you're an annoying teenager, but who's to say that others wont find you annoying? Not only that but kids get bored and tired easier and then they get grumpy. Nobody likes a grumpy kid.

04-14-2007, 05:19 PM
So true.
Someone got into the Good Friday benefit that the Runaway Boys were playin beacause they were accompanied by a parent/guardian.. that was me and Lauren and Amy :p
A group of us is going to turn up, and I'm pretty sure I didn't mention anything to do with a half baked idea to get in, although someone emailed the venue and they gave her permission. I'm going to turn up, and if they let us in then hooray, if not i'm going to hang around anyway. I'm just completely pissed off that people like me and all my friends who are underage have to constantly miss out on awesome events like this because other people drink.
Sorry that my attack was pretty dumb and not-based-on-much (although I was aiming it more towards Grumma) I'm just pissed off.
I'm just completely pissed off that people like me and all my friends who are underage have to constantly miss out on awesome events like this because other people drink.
Deal with it. We all had to wait until we turned 18 to get into gigs. Hell, I can't go to many bars and pubs and gigs at all even though Im over the limit because a lot of the venues allow smoking, which is bad for my lungs. You don't hear me sooking about it, and I'm permitted by law to be at these events.
We are allowed to drink and do our thing and not have under-age people there. You have no right to be pissed off.
cdejonge
04-14-2007, 05:38 PM
I'd prefer people didn't drink, but there's no law against that, I'm outnumbered and I'm over 18 anyway :p
I really hope they ban smoking soon though. And ban it everywhere.

We aren't condensending at all. Its just a simple fact. This is for people over 18. You are under 18. You can't go. There's a lot of things people can't do and they just have to deal with it. Like murder. You aren't allowed to murder. So people who want to murder have to deal with the fact they aren't allowed to. Hell, if we were allowed everything we wanted, I would be riding a T-Rex naked down Bourke Street yelling out "EVERYBODY DO THE DINOSAUR DANCE". But I can't have a T-rex. So I gotta deal with it and cope.

You see, you can't always get what you want. If you could, life would be boring anyway.
EXTREME. Every christmas I ask for a dinosaur. EVERY Christmas. Never have I even recieved one of those blow up dinosaurs. I'm so not helping in this argument :p
YOU SEE!? That's the condesceding tone I'm talking about. Talking down to me as if I'm an idiot.
But I'm going along anyway, with $15, incase they do let me in.
For fucks sake, I was quoting a Rolling Stones song for shits and giggles, don't be so fucking precious.
Here's another can of worms (man, I love stirring shit). If you want people to stop treating you like a child and not talk down to you, maybe its time you actually stopped being so childish? But whatever, take your 15 bucks and sit outside in the cold sooking about how the world hates you because you are little.
I'd just watch Iron Chef instead. Man that show rocks. One time, they cooked lobster, and they sliced the lobster in half whilst it was alive. And they did a close-up of the lobster being sliced in half. And when it got sliced in half, it was still wriggling for a bit. Hahahahaha. Quality tv.

I think many...most(?) people go through the stage of wanting to be over 18 when they've still got a few years to go. It's pretty much a fact of life that it happens.
You can't change it, so get over it people. (Mel, that was in no way directed specifically at you :))
This thing isn't been shown on TV at all, is it??
I don't know if people are thinking that I'm one of those kids who's pissed off at not being old enough. I hardly ever get worked up about not being old enough to go to a gig. The lady at the Corner box office told us we weren't allowed in and I accepted that. I'm annoyed that the venue is letting an underager in and saying no to the others.

From 1 July 2007 you won’t be able to smoke in enclosed licensed premises (including gaming rooms) and some outdoor dining or drinking areas.
I really can't wait for that. I got used to smoking being banned in Queensland and since I've moved to Victoria, its kind of annoyed me. On Saturday night I had to go outside for air about five times. I suppose sitting at a table with 3 smokers and myself didn't help much. I also hate smelling like smoke when you get home. It was awesome in Queensland because that grossness was pretty much completely eliminated. Anyway, hooray for 1 July!

Here in Canada, well, Ontario at least, we've had smoking banned in indoor public places for maybe a couple years (?) or so. Whenever I go over to the States, and sit in a restuarant, I get so grossed out because I'm not used to the smoking inside thing.

I've only seen one or two photos of Dave. :(
No offence to the people who went, but it's nice looking at photos of people other than Scott and Andy. I love Clem's dress!
